Well, according to your own source, Dido didn't quite wear your typical Georgian gowns… At least not in her only surviving portrait (which is very beautiful by the way)
@@ٴٴٴٴ_0 it's just a single portrait. Not unlikely that she usually dressed like the people around her.
Beautifully done videos on the history of 18th and 19th century fashion. The clothing is as fascinating as it is beautiful. I hope to see many more of these.
And Dr. Dyer’s modern dress is beautiful too - the print on that fabric is incredible and interesting.

Take a look at the latest womens fashion trends- thanks to shows like Bridgerton, you can see influence from recency and early georgian fashion (and some Victorian/"historical peasant").

I've been to Kenwood--what a lovely place! Who would have thought 18th century dresses had more pockets than 21st century dresses! 😅😑
As shown, the stomacher and dress (or robe) were pinned to the corset with straight pins. It was expected that a Lady would either lose or bend the pins periodically, therefore she was given "Pin Money".
This is stunning, that color is INCREDIBLE on her. I loved seeing how the gown was put on like a jacket, very informative!

What a lovely video. I'm normally not interested in fashion but there is some thing facinateing about seeing it in a historical context. I wish you had the actors deliver some of the lines and gave a bit more about their characters history though.
would love to see more info on male clothing as well. most of what i found was the dresses for women (given it was more controlled, complicated, and diverse so the refs are def needed)

Imagine how dirty those trailing hems got. No matter how clean you kept your floors, those dresses would have a rime at the bottom by the end of the day.
Dresses were actually equipped to deal with this, historically! The hems had durable trims/tapes on the bottom, often wool, which would take the majority of abuse from floors and outside. These could be taken off and replaced as needed.
There were walking outfits without the trailing hem.

The fabric almost looks like plastic or polyester. Not complaining just making an observation.
Silk taffeta I think. Its very crunchy and rustly.
This fabric is silk taffeta. Polyester is a modern fabric that is used as a dupe since it can simulate silk very well but is a plastic fabric where silk is a filament fabric. So silk is the real OG. If you felt the two side by side you'd definitely notice the difference in quality so remember, looks aren't everything.
I feel like they left out a few layers on Dido's dress.
The model being dressed in the pink Francaise gown makes me think of Angelica Schuyler from Hamilton. Im a broadway kid so I know my references

You stated that the Balleen stays were an important part of 'every' 18thc womans wardrobe - you really cannot state that as a historic fact. Sure it may have been extremely common for the upper classes but for the poor there is no way this was common place
Those that could not afford baleen stays used reeds or wood bents. Stays were absolutely part of EVERY woman's attire in the 18th century, the same way underwear and a bra are indispensable for modern women. The class differences showed not in have-vs-have-nots, but in things like straps (poorer women wore strapless stays for ease of movement), fabric choice, and restrictive lacing.
There were also “charity” stays given to working class women made of leather. Over time and with body heat it would mold to your shape.
