Just wanted to mention that the CD is an historically black neighborhood that has been heavily, heavily gentrified over the decades. The population was once 70-75% black. Both Jimi Hendrix & Quincy Jones went to Garfield HS. Even in the 80s the pop. was still about 40-45% black. Sir Mix-a-Lot famously references 23rd & Jackson in “My Posses’s On Broadway” (they were hanging out at Dick’s) from the 80s It’s under 15% black now. I barely recognize it anymore. You can still see remnants of its roots in some of the businesses still there. The CD is a beautiful neighborhood, but I do miss the culture that used to be there. Also, the first E in Ezell’s is pronounced with a long E, ee-zels.

All of this in the last 30 yrs post gentrification I have mixed emotions because with the CD was all Urban the city wasn't allowing us to develop our neighborhoods in any kind of building up our community in any kind of matter. By way of the weed and seed system that systematically denied black own businesses to receive loans so the black community can build up infrastructure once again we've been disproportionately pushed out from having a really community
