    #EarthWind&Fire #EWF #70s
When he created Earth Wind and Fire, Maurice White was driven by his vision of making a whole new sound that would incorporate many different musical genres- Jazz, Funk, Soul, Dance, Latin, African, and Pop. The concept of having African instruments in the synthesis was ultra important to Maurice, because he wanted to connect the new group with an African bloodline. There was a sense of responsibility that Maurice felt, to instill pride and dignity in the community through music. Along with Philip Bailey, his brother Verdine and a band of incredible musicians, Earth Wind and Fire set the bar for music from the 70s on. Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you’re a fellow music lover, join our community by subscribing below to our channel including our daily content. Become a Patron, you’re support helps us curate at a high level
Earth, Wind & Fire is one of the most innovative & exciting acts of the Rock Era. In this feature we celebrate with a reaction, to their groundbreaking legacy, and pay homage to the band’s incomparable leader Maurice White.
Maurice White was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and began his musical career as part of a jazz trio called the Mad Lads that he co-formed with his childhood buddy, the illustrious Booker T. Jones.
#5- The Quiet Storm classic “Reasons”- This is a 'bow down' to the genius of Philip Bailey:
If you’re putting together a list of the best falsetto singers of all time- it would certainly include:
Russell Thompkins Jr. of the Stylistics, Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees Frankie Valli of the Four SeasonsAnd Prince, among others...
#4- The title track to the album “That’s the Way of the World”- The iconic tune that Maurice referred to as the band’s “national anthem."
“That’s the Way of the World ascended to #5 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, and #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in '75. Co-written by Maurice & Verdine White, along with Charles Stepney, who composed the music. The song was originally intended to be included in the soundtrack for a low-budget motion picture about the corruption of a record label named “That’s the Way of the World,” but after reviewing the movie, and accurately predicting the film would be a box office bomb, Maurice made sure that the emphasis of That’s The Way of the World was on the album, not the movie. Once again the supreme musicianship of EWF is on full display on “That’s the Way of the World”.
#3- “Shining Star” - The stone cold #1 pop & R&B smash in ‘74 from the seminal That’s the Way of the World album.
The vocal exchange between Maurice White’s baritone & Phillip Bailey’s falsetto is incredible in “Shining Star.” As I mentioned, the two of them wailing together creates an incredible vocal explosion that no other act has been able to equal.
Maurice White, Phillip Bailey, and Larry Dunn authored this inspirational tune about achieving success by avoiding negativity, fighting adversity, and embracing your destiny. Something we could all use in these troubled times.
#2- “After the Love Has Gone” off the 1979 album I Am.
This hypnotic ballad has an interesting history on how it found its way to being a certified gold single for Earth, Wind & Fire:The music for “After the Love Has Gone" was created by prolific producer David Foster and Jay Graydon, while long-time Chicago co-lead vocalist, Bill Champlin wrote the bulk of the lyrics.
#1- From 1978...“September”- One of the most joyful jams of the rock era. “September” is an immediate attitude adjuster. You cannot resist the feel good power of this song. It was included as an original track on the band’s first greatest hits compilation- The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire- Volume 1.
“September” is another illustration of Maurice White’s spiritual mantra of transmitting positive vibes. It comes from his love & respect for the philosophies of Eastern Mysticism. He also found enlightenment in the book The Greatest Salesman in the World authored by Og Mandino.

I've seen countless live concerts, many from legendary bands and artists like Paul McCartney, Rush, Chicago, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Journey, Kansas, Styx, Boston, Cheap Trick, Elton John, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Metallica and the list goes on and on and on and on. But the band that still stands way above all of the rest as the most amazing live band experience will always be Earth Wind and Fire. I started listening to this band since I was a kid in the 70's and I still love them to this day. Never get tired of listening to their music. What an amazing band. And what a true musical genius the late Maurice White was. And don't get me started on Phillip Bayley. What an incredible singer and performer. I just feel fortunate to have experienced that amazing band live twice. One with Maurice and one a couple years ago without him. And yeah... he will always be terribly missed, but kudos to the band for keeping his spirit alive. The band still sounds incredible.

My favorite Earth Wind and Fire song is Sun Goddess, originally recorded with the great Ramsay Lewis in (I think) 1974. The original recording is incredible. However I love the live version from the album Gratitude from 1975. The saxophone solo on the live version blows me away every time and the Rhodes piano solo is sublime and beautiful. Truly one of the greatest bands in history.

Went and seen Chicago (Jason Scheff) and Earth, Wind, and Fire a few years ago on the Heart and Soul tour.
    Maurice White had just died.
    R.I.P.
They did a tribute to him through one of his songs. Showed him singing on a big screen while the band was doing the backup.
Was very awesome, one of my favorite bands of all time.
My wife is a huge Philip Bailey fan. Was a huge treat for her as she didn't know he was the lead vocalist.
Philip Bailey was extra awesome on this night.

I have only seen EWF once and that was on their SPIRIT tour after Charles Stepney passed away. After they announced that Stepney had died and the album was dedicated to his memory, I remember a single light shining down on Philip Bailey as he sang the albums title song SPIRIT. I was just a kid but I remember that image so vividly and the song had such an impact that I've carried the memory until this day (I'm 57 now).

A recent overview of Charles Stephney's own solo stuff and work called Step by Step was just released by his daughters last month---he was quite a visionary music producer--and a working jazz musician himself---who produced the music of acts like the Rotary Connection, Minnie Ripterton's classic début album Come To My Garden, and Deniece Williams' debut Niecy---which Maurice White also co-produced. There's an article on the site of the British paper The Guardian that's an overview of his work.

I love Earth Wind and Fire! ❤ I've been a fan since the 80s! When I was little I first heard them with the song Let's Groove!!!! That was the jam for me back then!
It was my Nina Sandy who really introduced me to EWFs music from the 70s! She saw them in concert in the 70s. She said the concert was AMAZING! After she played their music from the 70s for me, I was never the same!!!! All through my high school years I was all about the soul, funk, R & B, and disco music from the 70s!
I have a lot of favorite EWF songs and they have changed as I've gotten older. BUT!!!!! hands down my favorite EWF song will always be SERPENTINE FIRE!!!! ❤❤❤❤ AWWWWW MAN!!!! Hands down my favorite EWF song.
Serpentine Fire has it all for me! You got those famous EWF horns, the cowbells, and a funk groove! Vocal wise, you have Maurice with that soul and funk voice and him giving that OWWW! every so often. If that wasnt enough then Phillip Bailey with his amazing high falsetto voice! With this song you get it all! You get all the EWF goods!
I have to end this comment with a RIP Maurice White! An amazing and extremely talented man. You are very much missed and loved! ❤❤

Great memories, especially of hearing Phillip Bailey sing Devotion and hit those notes that could call dogs from miles around! And who could forget Verdine's joyously energetic performance on bass. Some other favorite songs are Fantasy, In the Stone and I'll Write a Song for You. Like September, any of those songs could pull me out of a bad mood. Thanks for doing this. Dann, Bailey had a last name- "Quarters." Didn't know she had a thing for Johnny Fever. I thought she'd go for Andy or Herb. Yeah Jennifer and Bailey had a Ginger and Maryann rivalry happening. Mr. Carlson was cool except he was a mama's boy. "That's The Way of the World" is when EWF stepped out into the world stage of profundity. It's their song that you really paid attention to the lyrics. Cause it's deep, "What's Going On" deep. The words that got me the most were "plant your flowers, and they grow"......a simple but brilliant metaphor of all metaphors. A message of hope and, godamnit, perseverance.

I grew up with this Band, and have almost every song downloaded. You are pretty much right on with your top 5, you easily could list a top 25. The Ballads from EWF were classic. Loves Holiday, You and I ,Be every Wonderful, Wait and Love goes on, just to mention a few. Even Maurice White solo debut in 1986 with I need you is amazing .Speaking of solo , I was at your Kenny Loggins interview in St George Ut last year, it was truly a great time. Also speaking of pure Genius it has been done and documented so many times, but you should do a segment on Brian Wilson ( of the Beach Boys) Professor of Rock is Synonymous with this legend of POP.

It's criminal that "Wait" was never released as another ballad single from the "I Am" album. Same story for "You Went Away" from "Faces". Also, add "Burnin' Bush" from "Spirit" to my personal EWF 5'er list.

I’m from St. Louis. Sold restaurant supplies to Funny Bone and saw Cedie Kyle there every week. He was janitor and opener. He begged me to come to open night all the time. I was so obsorbed with 3 toddlers and a business I never found the time. He would make me laugh every week though.

What a superb segment, Adam... Once again, you did it. EWF are my musical heroes since the early 90s, when my old man gave me as a present the album "All n´ All," while visiting New York City. I cannot completely describe with words what happened to my brain the first time I played the entire CD. What I do remember is that it was pure inter-dimensional musical transportation, from first to last track. I cannot thank my old man enough for having introduced EWF´s music to me when I was just a 16-year-old teenager... Thanks for your awesome work, Adam. You´re the man!

EWF to me the greatest of all time. I was the child born with a heart of gold way of the world made my heart grow cold. That was then I have since found love. The music of EWF saved me from being swallowed up by the hood. Love EWF foreever
