- Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Nathan East and Greg Phillinganes performing at the 1986 Montreux Jazz Festival.
I've remixed the audio track, creating a better sound. Especially the drums get a better dynamic in this version.
Enjoy and thumbs up, please ;-)
I like the drumming style of phil collins, Pure badass
The way Phil hit that snare its amazing
The feel of this song is outstanding. Phil plays it better than the original.
the way Phil and Nathan are locked in with this is just out of tis world. that's crazy tight, a pocket so deep you could stuff the Alps into
Phil you stole the show from everyone.....🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Favorite version of this song, the lineup is unreal! Phil absolutely kills it
Matt LeDonne Yes, love his '85 /' 86 kit
This is the only version I want to ever listen to!!
@@BothSidesofPhilCollinsOne of my favorite Phil kits. I think my favorite is the 1989-1990 kit from the But Seriously album and tour. Always loved the little fill at 1:06. Phil was incredible during this whole concert.
@@starky4079 the way these four just worked this song was incredible.
Outstanding !!!!! 😘
Collins at his peak as an all around artist....,
Phil Collins was one of the reason that I want to play drums.
1:02 Phil is literally killing out there! Oh my God, did you see that part?
That is typical phil collins the man is a true god especially on the drums let alone anything else he plays on
I love Nathan East's basslines in this song.
He’s so good.
Phil grooving hard. Awesome
Phil's got really good chops (not textbook, but has a great command of the kit, the sticks, dynamics, and a sense of the structure and drama of a song); maybe no one in rock could hit the accents, build the flow and intensity of a song, and nail a rock-solid and organic groove than Phil did (or play perfect fills for musical value, not for gymnastics. Makes sense when you realize that Neil Peart wrote a tribute article to Phil, calling him, among other things, at the time of the SEBTP Genesis tour, the sign that he needed to reach a certain level to be a real progressive drummer, calling that album "a perfect masterpiece of rock drumming"...going on to say that "it couldn't have been played better"; revered and fiercely protected by two generations of R&B and hip-hop artists for his grooves; that John Bonham taught Jason to play the trickier drum stuff by using Genesis tunes; listen to phil's bass drum control, all-around technique, time, and power on ua-cam.com/video/_YvKoOdP-Wg/v-deo.html, 1:06 and 2:04; players like Mike Portnoy, Marco Minneman,Brann Dailor, Travis Barker and dozens other sing his praises; John Wetton, who played with Phil and Robert Fripp on Exposure, with the live plan to make it a prog power trio, called Phil hands down the best drummer he ever played with, fantastic technique, musical, listens to the bassist, and feels/rocks better than Bruford could; the stories of artists, obscure and famous, who were blown away first that Phil just showed up after a phone call to do a gig that interested him (hence the multi-CD set "Plays Well with Others), but that he nailed complicated parts after no more than a description or one or two takes - by ear, as he never got comfortable reading music. The next generation of drummers should learn this if they don't know it.
I’m glad he’s not textbook. One of his strengths.
It's because he's self-taught.
@@thecawdsquad875 But he did have good early training in all the rudiments, which he uses in creative ways. He and his old teachers admit that he was a talented student, but couldn't make sense of drum music (dyslexic?). But, yeah, he's always the most interesting rock and prog drummer to me, with incredible variety and taste, and all kinds of song-drama, internal motion, and tasty grooves which require tremendous agility on the kit.
@@ytgibbo You said it. His technique is great - its built around what his ears want, and some of the more and less technical famous drummers out there -some pretty heavy hitters, and a few bass players, cite him as a genius, a drum hero and role model. Neil Peart openly called Phil'd progressive drumming one of the singular influences on his development as a drummer, and called Collins' playing on Selling England by the Pound "an enduring masterpiece of rock drumming", and that "it couldn't have been played better".
Phil absolutely nails the drumming on this..... Perfection.
Eric Clapton and Robert Plant always lo having Phil back them up on drums. If he’s good enough for them then he’s alright by me.
Great performance by all, but Phil steals the show here.
I’m loving Eric’s Orange shirt.
Mr Collins is a huge influence on my drumming (not that anyone should care- I’m a nobody). He’s always been overlooked as a world class drummer due to being so damn good at everything else!!
@Tim TPDRUMS Nobody plays like Phil. I can spot it a mile off.
One of the best rock drummers of all time. His famous "in the air" drum riff is epic and immortal.
Same here. Phil is the biggest influence on my drumming. I can pick out his style even when he was drumming on someone else's recording. His tom work is unmistakable.
Ya. To me he is a drummer first. Ya can go back to his work with brand x and early genesis
dude! Phil absolutely holding it DOWN here, makes me want to pick up the sticks again
My God how good they Play together!!!!!
The fill at 1:05 is so tasty! Classic Phil fill
My guess is you're a drummer yourself, and probably a damned good one. Tasty indeed!
I can watch that fill over and over. Love the right hand smash of the cymbal
The best band line up Clapton ever had.
this whole concert is fantastic! Phil has cited this band as his favorite band to have ever worked with. It shows, his feel, timing, groove and sound is at peak here. I adore this concert.
KILLER LINEUP! Phil Collins is an EXCELLENT musician. (but then Eric is no slouch) Great to see friends share a stage! Nathan's bass work is fine and Greg has a nice take on the organ. Superb.
These 2 are some of the greatest in my time ❤❤❤❤
It doesn't matter if it is Adam Ant, Eric Clapton, Band Aid or Frida from ABBA, when you hear the drums on a song Phil has played on then you just know it is Phil who is playing them. His sound is unmistakable. Hope that makes sense!
It very much makes sense to me - I have exactly the same experience. The only other drummer I have that with, who's also fantastic, is Manu Katche.
This is the Ultimate Edition of this song. PHIL IS PHENOMENAL in this. Hot gig!
EXCELLENT!!!!!💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯👍👍
if there's Mr. Bonham and Mr. Copeland, then Mr. Collins is among them. Collins has Cobham's bold and firm, as well as Copeland's syncopation. all theirs was in Mr. Collins.
Who'd think the stand out instrument in an Eric Clapton song would be the drums? But then there's Phil...
Outside of Genesis, one of the best concerts i ever saw.
He was able to relax and just cut loose. Perfect fills.
After viewing this display of musicianship on Collin's part and all of the biggest stars in music requesting him to record with them and play Live with them is astounding. I now have an even lower opinion of Noel Gallagher then I did before, if that is even humanly possibly?
Clapton and Collins did some legendary shows together back in the 80s...would be a real treat to see them collaborate again
I love Eric's orange shirt ☺
Phil is smokin!
Phil knows what he's doing
Outstanding...easily my favorite arrangement of this classic tune!!!
Wicked mon! Tight band, marvellous. And Mr.East on that bass god damn, locked with Mr.Collins! Wooo
Well it is the great Phil Collins!
What a combo of absolute genius musicians
First this is one of Eric's greatest bands. I am rather fond of Jamie Oldaker on drums but Phil is seriously on fire with Eric and gets to just be himself. And, "himself" is damn fine player.
Greg Levine Oldaker is a tough act to follow! Phil made it his own! Jamie Oldaker deserves more accolades, beautiful feel on everything he ever did.
@@mootbooxle fully agree. Jamie was a great fit for Eric's music but Phil really carved out his own space there.
He loves playing with his mates and takes his craft seriously.
Bixo, olha Phil Collins tocando, è animal demais, melhor versão de todas sem Sombra de duvidas, comprei esse DVD em londres em 2008
Philip Collins is the best drummer
i love the little cue from Eric to Phil for the ending , Phil instantly instantly sets the ending up. Not forgetting Nathan and Greg also on fire.
With a very young Greg and Nathan ... so cool to see this bunch together...love these times (I sound old....yes)
And how tasty does the bass guitar play..👍👍👍👌👌👌 In 1973, we had a dance. It was a great hit.😑😑😑
A côrte real está no palco senhoras e senhores.
Phil e Clapton são fodas!
These are guys are sooo good! I'm no expert but when Eric goes on a guitar solo towards the end, does Phil know that and is so good that he covers him? I'm glad to see Nathan East there.
Thanks for posting this!! - I still listen to a bootleg of this tour just to hear Phil play with Clapton.
Love the 2, 5, 1 variations the band goes into during the outro solo. Gives the whole thing kind of a cool, Stevie Wonder vibe.
Feliz por encontrar essa relíquia um clássico maravilhoso , espetacular 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love how Nathan steps back and let’s Eric have his solo. The respect between the band is apparent. This is my favorite version.
The Dream Team...!!!
Phil!
I'm just in awe every time I see him perform In The Air. Doesn't matter which performance I see. ❤
Som maravilhoso do Bob na voz do Eric ficou show e Phil na bateria espetacular 👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That’s it fella’s ….. BRING DOWN THE HOUSE !!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏👏
Phil is nailing the feel in this version. This is closest to Jamie Oldaker's studio version.
Holy. Fuck. What. A. Jam.
Eric and a Phil go way back playing together.
that one glorious moment when Eric really COULD have extended his validity by playing and recording with a backing band of this caliber.
Two top fuel musicians, result , brilliance!
Great version!!!
Ahh I just love Phil!!! He is magnificent on those drums!
And on his rest day he created music...and it's been a big hit ever since!
What a great rendition of this song !!!
Love it guys !!!! Fantastic !!!!! 😘
O Phil só arrasando na bateria. 👏👏👏👏🥁🎸
Ô louco arrasaram. Show demais só fera. Maluco canta demais!
Enlouquecedor isso! A vontade é de gritar forte. Ô louco! Ooooooooh hooooooooo

The improvement in sound quality is outstanding, and very appreciated, it just brings out how stellar the performances are.

If I could give you a million thumbs up for this, I would!! I love Phil Collins!!! I subbed!!!
Phil 1:07😮how the heck does he do that!!!!???🤔insane!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great work Both Sides. This is a new one on me! I’ve still got an old VHS copy of a concert from this tour but I’ve never come across this particular one at the jazz festival. Where the hell do you find these gems?!
I don’t doubt about you
Number 1
Brillant. Everybody
This version is better than the original Phil is the best and Clapton Also.
Professionals are at a great height
i like the part where everyone talks about phil collins stealing the show because nobody usually realises the drummer's worth but I guess u can't miss out on a classic collins groove
Phil’s fill back into the chorus around 2:55-3:00 is absolutely FILTHY.
Give me a WOOHOO!
Phil Collins is like the Dave grohl of the 80s and the other way around lol
Where is the rest of this show?
Man, does this entire performance exist online somewhere? Or any full show with Phil behind Clapton?
Is that Greg Phillinganes on the keyboard?
Yes it is indeed.
