    Regarding the color being a little faded, I can't speak for this monitor in particular but for people transitioning from a TN panel to IPS, you will always notice this issue with colors appearing more "white-ish". That is actually how things are supposed to look (many people use IPS for graphic design) but we're used to monitors that crank up the contrast and saturation by default in an attempt to make things look more vibrant than they are. It's like eating a donut with a lot of sugar in it and then tasting an apple and thinking it has no flavor. Something to keep in mind when you change monitors.

    • @pumpkinthestrange1
      @pumpkinthestrange1 2 роки тому +22

      There's a good chance that she used IPS before, but macs are pretty much always glossy, and glossy displays look more vibrant but always glare like crazy, also you can see your own reflection in it often. Matte screens are more washed out but they don't glare in the sun or light and don't give these mirror-like reflections.

      She also can check if she loaded the color profile... it doesn't always automatically apply.

      the colours are probably just not calibrated properly (e.g. white point not calibrated to 6500K, incorrect colour profile set (sRGB/DCI-P3/Display P3), gamma not calibrated to 2.2-2.4, etc)

    I used to have multiple screens for my work before I move back to my home country because I needed to have several windows opened so that, as you said, I don't have to waste my time switching the window while taking data to a spreadsheet, for example. One thing that ultrawide screen is better than normal screens is that you can have bigger windows, which is really helpful for someone who need remote accesses to her PC and software inside while working from home and need to have as large working space as possible. It is going to be really helpful, only if I can afford it though...

      I bought two 27" QHD recently, to try them out. The monitors were identical to Pixio PX275C but branded to a local computer store. I returned them because I found the setup difficult to use. I calibrated them both and noticed that at least in them, the RGB setting of 50 is actually 100 % and increasing it would just cause clipping of the shades near white. So it seems that properly calibrated monitors always have something like 48, 49 or 50 there. Now I also realize that a contrast setting of 50 is basically the pass-through one, i.e. a "do nothing" setting. But for 120 nits one required a brightness setting of 27, another a 32. I would lend this lady a colorimeter if I were there. But also, Mac OS at least used to have a visual method of calibration.

      I have the same monitor for daily coding. What can I say is that for space it was wonderful! But I find the default font size for common IDE is too small for the screen so unless I get really near to the monitor I can hardly read the code. The small fix to this was to simply increase the font size of the editor only. So other fonts like menu and file manager will stay small and save a lot of space.

    Right now I have an older LG 29” ultra-wide and a 27”. Looking to replace the 27” with a normal 32” as I really want more vertical space (hence stumbling upon your review). When I’m doing web dev I really need two monitors. On the 29” I usually have VS Code extended close to the entire width to accommodate the terminal window, editor and side bar open at same time. Then on the 27 I have the web app open along with the dev tools so that takes up a lot of horizontal space. As usual web dev makes things harder than it should be. But thanks for the review gave me something to think about. Btw what did you do with your old monitor? Hate to throw away a perfectly working monitor. Good will donation?

      @@seriouscat2231 I'm pretty happy with my 34''. Unless those longer monitors have a strong curve, you'll have a lot of the content in your peripheral vision, so I only find it worthwhile to spend extra on the monitor in front of me, not on additional screen that I look at less. I'm not sure whether I prefer just adding a secondary monitor or getting a giant one. If you like to use fullscreen apps (like I used to), then the additional monitor would make more sense. I guess if you use keyboard shortcuts to arrange stuff (like I do now), a super long one might make sense, but I'm not sure. I suspect that a super long monitor's aspect ratio wouldn't go well with videos/photos.

      @@josealvaradotorre6870, thanks for taking the time to respond. I borrowed a 32" UHD to try out 1) what a 32" UHD would look like, 2) what the resolution would feel on a 40" 5k2, 3) how many pixels there are in a 3840 x 1600, 4) how do 1440 or 1600 vertical pixels feel when scaled to the equivalent of a 34" or 38" ultrawide. Nvidia's drivers for linux let me choose almost any resolution and scale it to almost any size on screen, so I can simulate the actual size and resolution of both if I just ignore that the extreme edges are missing.
      2993 x 1440 scaled to 3840 x 1848 (128 %) to simulate a 34" ultrawide, 3044 x 1600 scaled to 3840 x 2019 (126 %) to simulate a 38" one.
      I think 1440 is fine and 1600 feels like too much. But you are right that the extreme edges are the real question. And the additional 200 + 200 horizontal pixels.

Came from a single 27" monitor much like yourself, so the extra screen real estate and simplistic aesthetic made it incredible. I’ve pondered getting a nice monitor for a while, but I’m at that place where a monitor upgrade would require a GPU upgrade, which would require a CPU/motherboard/RAM upgrade, and I’ll suddenly have spent like 3k 😬 This definitely makes a strong case for an ultra wide though. Until then, I’ll stick with my dirt cheap 1080p monitors and do anything requiring colour accuracy, or involving looking at text for more than 10 seconds on my MacBook Pro’s screen.

    I would have gone with the 34" MSI PS341WU. The 5K 5120x2160 resolution is a nice PPI bump. LG has one with the 5k resolution but I did not think it warranted 500 bucks over the MSI one.

    Wow, this review came at the right time. I was looking for an ultra-wide monitor for my new desk setup since one of my 27” decided to commit suicide one day while I was doing cleaning.
    My only dilemma now is… A curved and a standard flat? Seriously, I am torn here. Can anyone help?
    And the monitor can be used to charge the MacBook Pro? Did I get that correctly?

      Yes, I can confirm that they can do that. As long as the monitor you get uses USB-C with power delivery which these LG ones do. They do come with a pretty hefty power brick.

    I made A LOT of researches & decided with triple monitors(dual also ok just not 1 wide). Big reason is you can watch full screen movie/youtube/netflix/twich/videos with one monitor and other monitor to do your work. You cannot watch fullscreen & do other stuffs with 1 wide monitor. Same if you are gaming, one full screen monitor for game & other work/discord.
    There are many merits & demerits for both but this one reason only enough to make me decided on dual/triple monitors rather than 1 ultrawide. Each to their own. Hope this helps anyone.

      The question I have is, how do you physically arrange them? I have had different kinds of dual and triple monitor setups, but with two 27" QHD I was unable to find a comfortable left plus right or main plus side monitor combination so I took them back.

    I had the same color and pixel issues with this monitor so I took it back and got a LG 32" 4K ERGO (non-ultra wide) and it is much better. I think it's because the 4k on a ultrawide isn't really crystal clear cause of the dimensions. For some reason the non-ultra wide looks perfectly 4k and great color compared to the ultra wide.

      @Seoung Lee, are you having this problem with ur monitor also? I can't turn off auto brightness! When I watch Netflix or any video media with subtitles, the screen dims when there is no subtitle on screen, and turns bright again when subtitles appear. I suspect it was the auto brightness setting, but there is no auto brightness setting. I tried turning off the SMART ENERGY SAVING setting, but the problem is still there. Then i turned off LG's DFC (Digital Fine Content) setting, still to no avail. There is no setting for it also on Mac's system preference display setting. I searched in the manual, explored forums after forums, still no answer. Fyi, I paired LG Ergo 32UN880-B with Macbook pro intel running on Catalina. Welp....

    • @garyn7067
      @garyn7067 Рік тому

      Couple problems.
      How close are you to the monitor? I sit 24 inches from my monitor. At that distance the sides of the monitor distort, because they are so FAR from my eyes, vs, the center of the screen. And you are also looking at the side pixels at an angle (30-45 degrees), vs perpendicular in the center. I found myself leaning over to the side, so that I can look at the sides of the monitor more perpendicular. A narrower monitor reduces that problem.
