Matt Halpern himself told me and about 15 other people about what this song meant to him during a drum clinic a few weeks back, and after hearing that and now seeing how intense this gets towards to the end, I can sincerely say this man puts more emotion into his drumming than anyone else i've ever seen, which makes him just that more of a pleasure to watch.
can you elaborate on that at all? I'm genuinely curious to know what this means to him but I never would've thought to ask when I last saw them in August!
I may well get some details wrong in this, but sure thing. Basically he was on tour I think either at the end or beginning of 2015 and his dog died. idk if you follow Matt on many social medias but his dogs are pretty much his kids, like they mean so much to him. lune was lyrically written by Spencer about his girlfriend who he's like madly in love with, but Matt related it to the death of his dog. while they recorded the album track, Matt was crying all over the place and yet he still did it in a single take. The whole almost 7 minute song in one take.
That's awesome man thank you for sharing that! I love to hear the backstories on songs and I knew there would be some serious emotions invested in this one. Lyrically it makes complete sense, but to know that Matt applied himself that deeply just makes me appreciate it even more. Thanks again!
I literally started tearing up.....this is drumming, right here. Pure, honest, organic, passionate, solid, no bs. Exactly what the song needed, and nothing more. You don't need chops (even though we all know he does) when you can make your drumming move people like he does. Absolutely unreal.
@@zacharyloewke6366 absolutely, but Matt wrote the Drumline and attributed the song to his dogs who had passed away when they were recording - such a beautiful piece when it all comes together, and you can really see him put all of himself into it!
This is a perfect example of the beauty of music as an art. A song is just a moment in time where you get to step into another dimension and you can hear the magic of that moment.
They played this song when I saw them in concert a while back, and god when the chant came up and the ENTIRE crowd was singing, there is nothing like that. You can feel the emotion that everyone in the band is putting out and the raw feeling that the crowd send back to them. Unreal.
What you experienced is why metal music is the epitome of the best stuff on earth to the ear drums… it’s music that makes your soul move within you… may your journey in this life be a beautiful one! 🍻🤘🏻
One of my local drum mentors who I respect greatly once told me that a truly great drummer has nothing to do with their speed or capability, but how they convey the space inbetween each note. It's the ability to perceive when to play what and when not to play anything. I think Matt perfectly exemplifies that. Exactly what was needed to make the piece soar emotionally into hyperspace, nothing less, nothing more.
I agree. It is like shredding on a guitar. The ability to shred is nice when it helps to tell the story. But simply endless constant speed becomes mindless and boring IMO. As you put it, the rests are just as important in conveying the emotion as the notes.
His drumming from 5:18 is on the cusp of sheer lunacy and it is incredible, simply incredible. The physicality of his performance, the look in his eyes; it's as if he wants to break through the kit and find some ecstatic sound beyond the ranges of the piece. Beautiful.
his playing is so emotional. im a bassist and i cant play with drummers who just dont feel the music they are playing, but he is just enjoying every second of playing this!
The most spiritual experience of my life was seeing all of Select Difficult played from front to back, and singing with 300 people I didn't even know. Hearing the guitars, the drums, and Spencer's amazing melodies is by far the happiest I've ever felt in my life
I like the fact that he starts the song all clean and after 5 minutes, he's all sweaty haha! I believe this guy has the most "feel" and "groove" in metal apart from being technical too! You always continue to influence my playing, Keep up te good works ;)
Stunning. I haven’t heard drums sound so heartbreaking and uplifting and gut wrenching and gorgeous all at once. Wow... I imagine the Promark guys filming this in probably just in silent shock as he played through this song. Perfect drumming. IMO. Perfect sound perfect groove perfect everything. Dayum.
Animals as Leaders is awesome but they focus too much on the complexity, Periphery, on the other hand, focuses both on the complexity and the emotion behind their songs. The two are awesome bands however.
Red Cap That's just as subjective as saying that Periphery are the "best prog metal band out there right now", which is a ridiculous claim. Music affects individuals in different ways, many AAL songs get to me on an emotional level, but there is no way to definitively say that any band is the best of its genre. Tesseract absolutely shits all over Periphery when it comes to expressing emotion in the progressive metal genre.
+BrIT Well that's your opinion and I respect it, I never said periphery was the best prog band out there, I just said that each band is good at its own way. One more technical than the other but in the end they are both prog.
wipe0utpuls3 what's the song about ? ( not being sarcastic ) I just listen to the music don't pay much attention to the lyrics find it ruins the songs for me.
Will12 Will12 The vocalist wrote it for his girlfriend..it's a love song. It means a lot to all members of the band...I read a comment about how Matt was crying all over the place because the song reminded him of his dog who passed away in 2015 and recorded the entire drum track in one take.
I heard what Matt said this song means to him in a clinic and now when I see him blow up in the climax of the song, how he hits so hard and gets into it so much, it kinda breaks my heart.
Hands down my absolute favorite song to watch him play. You can see and feel the amount of emotion in his playing just by watching and listening. You can see the pain on his face. Nothing more beautiful than watching a musician play with raw emotion. Bravo and cheers, Matt.
The passion in his playing is everything... I love when someone finds their joy in life because it reads on their face without even trying!! Not going to lie, I put this on my 72-in TV and just jam with my morning coffee!! I'd go to every one of their shows
The raw power and impact of his hits, yet the grace and fluidity. This may seem cliche but he is like a flowing river cutting thru the mix, knowing when to let the song breath and when to let loose. Brilliant performance.
Jan2020 - coming back to this, picking my jaw up off the floor. Dudes insane. And its not just about what he can do. its mostly about his selection and what he chooses to do and not do... an artist.
Wow, such an incredible and beautiful song. This is exactly what I love about periphery, their sound is something that you will never hear anywhere else. They built themselves off of self preservation and independence, whether it be the fact that every single member runs their own successful business, or the fact that they own their own record label. And on top of that they’re starting to do NFTs. Periphery is just an incredible and unique band and I am genuinely grateful to be able to listen to them and learn from them, especially as a drummer.
love that matt looks like he's just having fun with it, like he is so comfortable with his source material and just locked in. cant thank him enough for his contributions to my life
Matt is the best drummer out there in my honest opinion. Not just technique wise, but also just how freakin tasty his drumming is. His drumming lifts every song five notches compared to most other generic prog/djent drummers. Matt Garstka, Anup Sastry and Jay Postones are som other great "non generic" ones btw : )
Hans Aaraas all the drummers you mentioned have very distinctive styles, I'd like to add Baard Koldstad from Leprous, he's great on the last album. And I'd like to see more of Luke Holland on whatever band he joins next.
I don’t usually comment on videos, but at one time this song meant something different to me, than what it does now. My wife passed in August of 2024, at 28. This masterpiece now hits on a total different level. Everyday I miss her and hurt that our story ended. I love you Rachel. Then and forever.
the fucking passion in his drumming is unmatched and this song is intensely evoking and hearing the drums layered this way really drives that boiling over feeling you get towards the end of the song home at least for me this song is everything i love about music passion, skill, relatability ,powerful evocative delivery and trance inducing grooves fuck i love this band been a fan since haunted shores/bulb where all periphery was
Such a beautiful song. I saw them play this in concert in November 2017 and I'm gonna be honest... I cried a little. The song always makes me think of my wife and daughter. That's what good music is all about. The emotion is captures. And Matt's playing certainly does that.
Such a passionate drummer. You can just tell by his face during this video how much he loves doing this. Hell you can tell how passionate all these guys are if you've seen them live. My all time favorite band by a huge margin.
This is so damn beautiful. I get emotional every time I listen to this song, and Matt's performance only enhances the experience. Live, this was an experience like no other.
Matt makes me feel normal for having my mouth wide open in fills and certain parts that really fill me with life on the drums :) I feel less like a moron now. It's just an expression that you're totally locked IN. Thanks Matt, you rock. The groove, smoothness, fluency, musicality, creativeness and the FEELS are next level man. Matt it in another dimension while drumming, you can see it. It's all about him and the song. The FEELS!
10/10 would cry again.
Duuuude nice to see you here!
I know exactly what you mean @Werner
you mean 7/8?
Thought I was weird for fighting back some tears, only to see this comment. 😭😭😭😭😭
I hope you haven't caught a wink of sleep this past year knowing you could've said 7/8.
Anyone else just want to give Matt a hug and say "Thank you" after watching this?
absolutely
yes, :')
do you feel the groove, yes i feel the groove
chase it, hold it, feel it, never let it go
Don't let goooooooooooo
I was feeling super emotional and your comment made me smile, thank you. :')
Love this thread lmao
I don’t feel the groove
The groove grooves me harder than a pornstar getting rammed like a jackhammer in both holes
The floor toms flamming is the most satisfying sound ever
Totally agreed!
I just want someone to looks at me the way Matt looks at his hi-hat

That he indeed is, thanks for the story!

I'd have to agree with you! Has just the right amount of punch to it! :)

Agreed

Promark Drumsticks If I enjoyed? I am freaking crying right now! Much respect for Promark and Periphery from Brazil!
This man can break 3 symbals with one swing of Promark stick! lol
Breaking cymbals is a sign of bad technique.
Is a joke for Periphery's fisrt album fans...

Steve Judd from Karnivool! Up there with the best. Extremely creative as well but so in time its almost God like.
