@Anglo not really, it is raw meat. for most people outside of Europe raw meat is seen as unhygienic anyway. And the youtubers kept repeating it again and again because it is weird for themselves. And I did some research on the topic as well, even in the vast majority of Europe it's seen as weird, the only nations that I found to have actually similar preparations is Belgium and Denmark, but theirs is made of Beef. The also are similar dishes in Armenia, Turkey, Kurdistan, America, Lebanon and Chile. But non were made out of pork. So I have come to the conclusion that foreigners usually don't have an issue with the fact that it's raw meat, but rather with the fact that it's raw pork which in most places, is seen as unsafe for consumption.
I'm sure they didn't even try to pronounce it the German way. They just said it the way it is normally pronounced in English. And an English speaker would never read the "wurst" as "woorst" but rather as something similar to "wörst", as in words like "burn", "turn", "purple" etc.
@@HessianLikeTheFabric You are heavy on the woodway. Indeed it IS the same pronunciation. Berlin (in Englisch: Börlin) has absolut the same "ö" as used in Köln. I heard it very very often from english speaking people, some from Britain, most from Ireland. And when I tell them to use the "ö" from "Berlin" in "Köln", they are able to pronounce it in a correct way.
2:24 That's not a German beer, but Kölsch. There is a consensus among Germans that Cologne is the only place in Germany whose inhabitants are utterly inept to brew a decent beer. That's also why it's served in small glasses. It allows visitors to suffer through a drink with a smile on their face pretending it wasn't as terrible as it is.
Never understood that Since there are so many varieties of different Kölsch. It’s a very sweet beer and I love it. And I think they serve it in small glasses so it won’t get stale and stays fresh.
Okay, Disclaimer in Germany its perfectly safe to eat raw pork and you'll find that every butcher in germany offers "Mett" (seasoned raw ground pork) sometimes even in different varities. Its one of the staples of german cuisine. Also i try really hard not to be insulted that you guys would assume that something thats on the menu in a restaurant isn't safe to eat. i mean come on do you really think the restaurant would deliberatly try to poison you or that the government doesn't enforces food regulations? Yes i can understand reluctance considering that other countries have far less restrictive food regulations and raw pork can be a real danger there but refusing to finish the dish because of fear, and not because it tastes bad or whatever, shows distrust in the ability of germany to keep people save and that is scratching on my german pride. Sorry for the rant i shut up now xD
Dude, people are skeptical of menus all over the world. It doesn't matter what logic says; sometimes instinct tells us to stay away from a dish that seems dangerous at first. Don't go thinking this is a personal offence against Germany. Calm, mein freund. :)
Better safe than sorry. It's common knowledge not to drink tap water in other countries because you will most likely get sick. While I understand your point of view, criticising someone else for being apprehensive of something they've been taught never to eat while growing up is also a bit weird, no?
Sorry Buddy, the "don't drink tapwater" rule is for Third World Countries. Last time I checked I'm living in a developed nation. As the original comment said German regulations on food standarts are among of the highest in international comparison.
Imaginärer Freund As far as I know you're not supposed to drink it even if the country is developed because there are different microorganisms living in the water systems that the people living there grew up drinking so their bodies are accustomed to it but our bodies won't be.
these guys are fun. and one of the most objective food criticisms I have seen so far. and as for the food poisoning, the danger with pork is not like with chicken and salmonella, the danger is to get a tape worm. and germany has crazy high standards when it comes to checking meat for these things. so meat is perfectly safe to eat^^

DatVocals! Raw pork is actually a lot more likely to make you sick than raw fish is. Also, remember: these guys are not from germany, so they aren't used to the incredibly high standards food is held to in germany. Food in Germany is probably the most strictly regulated and safest to eat anywhere in the world, I would never eat raw pork in the US for example
meinefressekeineahnung wieichdenkackkanalnennensoll British produced Pork has higher standards than German pork. Nobody gets food poisening from German Mettbrötchen. The meat and its cooling chain is always tested, and if your kitchen or store is not up to standard, they close it before you can count to three.
A nickname for the Mett, the raw pork from the Mettbrötchen is "Bauarbeitermarmelade" which translates to "construction workers' marmalade". It's a food for real men - and women!
I remember being in cologne for work and the representative of the company we were visiting took us to a restaurant and recommended this. I remember thinking it was a weird dish but it was really tasty! I didn’t hesitate to try it like these pair of wet wipes.

It's so damn funny to watch this as a German, but no it's not a local thing in cologne but everywhere else too and also if you were German you wouldn't dare to call "Kölsch" a beer haha
I never drink Kölsch but in blind tastings only 50% were able to taste the difference between an Alt and a Kölsch, they tested it with 50 Men which were born or lived in either Köln or Düsseldorf for most of their life and are heavy beer drinkers.
Actually it's quite funny because the first thing you gyus ate - raw pork is also very common in Poland! It's called "tatar" and you eat it with chopped onions, pickles raw egg and immediately after you take a shot of vodka! :) 😊
Oh yeah, I forgot - people use both types of meat, depening on personal prefference :) but the "side dishes" that come along with it, that is eg the onion, are mostly the same as in Germany
Vietnam also have a raw pork dish called "nem chua". They're also chopped up like this but they mix it with onion slices and chilly slices, cooked pig skin and wrapped in banana leaf, my favorite dish
This is so funny to watch because mettwurst is such a normal thing here to eat in germany 😂 i mean, i don't like it but i never thought its weird that my mom or others are eating raw meat hahah
Kevin Alvarez its because the mett gets eaten withing hours after it was produced (when bought from a butcher... the one from the supermarket is sealed airtight in plastic, maybe with some protective gases or whatnot, i habe no clue about that), also its obviously stored at cool temperatures... and when it comes to restaurants / others offering Mettbrötchen thats ofc regulated (i mean... its Germany after all xD) to avoid such complications :)

Well, i ain't judging no one
Bro.
If I had to decide between tentacles and Mettbrötchen, I'd go for Tentakel mit Mett im Reisbett.
Both are equally awesome!!
@Anglo For non-Europeans it is weird. I don't understand why they are weirdet out by this, but they are, it's probably cultural or something
The pronunciation is hiarious! Where no "ö" is needed you put it in, and where you do need it you leave it out. XD
I'm sure they didn't even try to pronounce it the German way. They just said it the way it is normally pronounced in English. And an English speaker would never read the "wurst" as "woorst" but rather as something similar to "wörst", as in words like "burn", "turn", "purple" etc.
I could never master umlauts when i was a kid learning german for 5 yrs of high school. But if i took my learning even further i would do so.
In English they HAVE an "ö". They use it in words like "burger" or "Berlin".
Mett ist geil

Darius Sanguna your rant was 100% acceptable. Wish I get to visit your country some day!!
There is nothing local about this dish. It is found all over Germany!
It is actually originally from Hamburg.

these guys are fun. and one of the most objective food criticisms I have seen so far. and as for the food poisoning, the danger with pork is not like with chicken and salmonella, the danger is to get a tape worm. and germany has crazy high standards when it comes to checking meat for these things. so meat is perfectly safe to eat^^

The British rules are actually stronger than the EU consequently Pig Farmers in the UK have higher overheads and EU pork is cheap but lower quality. Due to the EU rules the UK is flooded with cheap and poorer quality pork but no one in Europe will pay the premium for UK pork.
mwnciboo german rules too are more rigid than EU rules. I was talking not about production standards, but standards you have to meet to be able to even sell meat in germany, no matter where it's from.
meinefressekeineahnung wieichdenkackkanalnennensoll Production and selling are covered under the same regulations. If you are selling non-EU compliant Pork in the EU you are breaking the law. The EU regulation is the minimum standard you must adhere to covering welfare, slaughter, marking, distribution, selling and movement of pork product within the EU
mwnciboo Emphasis on minimum.
There are two types of People: People who love Mettbrötchen and those who hate it. Nothing in between
