Yay! As a high school English teacher, I'm always happy to know that some of us leave a mark. When I was in 10th grade, I shyly approached my English teacher about analyzing the lyrics of my favorite pop songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I wanted to write an essay on a few of them, and I thought maybe the whole class would be into doing the same. She sniffed and said "Well now, Jane, this is not really poetry, is it?" This is a song that always will inspire and motivate the future generations no matter what lies ahead in times to come. We are all a passenger at the end of our lives. Have all a beautiful and memorable journey.
After hearing all different covers including those in talent shows, I can’t believe I say this still resonated the spirit of the song the most. Lightness in darkness, gentle and warmth. I’m born in the 90s
One of my favourite songs of all time. First heard this when I was aged 7. It has remained one of my go to tunes when I'm struggling. Beautifully written.
I play this song every time I feel alone and as if my heart broke This song really helped me realise that in all darkness there could be a light that gives you happiness And between all the problem that finds Me in the sound of silence It doesn't hurt me because good tends To Triumph over evil Which corrupts all people But nothing that can corrupt The sound of silence
@@user-wq7ro7ck3j The song could be interpreted as the big city lights people become mute by living their lives with anonymity to all the other 'ignoring' people around. Only advertisements like neon writings and posters 'speak' to the people, but graffities too. And by this the silence grows like cancer, seperating the people. Instead they should wake up from their sleepwalking, and respect and interact with the others. Getting them out of their isolation by taking the arms and 'hugging' each other. Do not ignore the people around you, even not in the anonymity of the towns. Keep to hug and interact with living beings as a living being!
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. The neon sign, I think is the modern media, telling us garbage and hiding the real truth. Like they only tell us what (some) people want to hear and they never even graze the edge of truth.
This song came out when I was a little kid, and I used to listen to it endlessly on a 45 rpm disk. The lyrics made no sense to me whatsoever, but I knew even then that they had profound meaning. What a brilliantly written song, with so much depth and thought provoking. Yes we are all alone at times as individual’s but our struggle is often being shared by people in similar circumstances. My favourite most beautiful song
The Sound of Silence Lyrics [Verse 1] Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains within the sound of silence [Verse 2] In restless dreams, I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night, and touched the sound of silence [Verse 3] And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared disturb the sound of silence [Verse 4] "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops, fell And echoed in the wells of silence [Verse 5] And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls And whispered in the sound of silence"
This song is amazing because it could mean so many things, there is something in the sound of silence, but what hides in the dark may not always be the same, and the neon light may be a god or nothing but a lie. For me this song was about discovering who I was, the silence is my soul, it is full of the greatest hopes, and the darkest desires, it is not a good or bad thing, it simply *is*, the neon light is who I want to be, I created this image, and it is not purely me, it is who I am to you, as while I must be honest, everyone has an inescapable part that they simply can't show anyone. And even if I showed you everything, I simply don't have a true "personality", I am the most optimistic pessimist I've ever met, I fit in every stereotype of male teenager other than jock, and maybe a few female ones. The only definite traits I have is a litteraly deadly sense of empathy, and the weirdest inferiority complex I've heard of.
Your words are so true. Your words described what I feel when I listen to this song. Unbelievably searing and poetic. Thank you for your insight. Have a great life ahead.

Even now, years later, I still feel so lost, like I'll never really belong, never really be a part of the world. Like I'm cursed to never _quite_ fit in. To live in the silence, alone with only the dark to keep me company
This version is peaceful yet vibrant, like a quit meadow, while disturbed's version is loud and powerful, like a stormy coast, both are beautiful in their own ways.
but of course you have to throw a hissy fit because its not the original, and you can't deal with the concept of two things being good in different ways. you might like burgers, and you might like ice cream, but you aren't going to put ice cream on your burger. Why? Because it sounds disgusting! Doesn't mean they are bad, they just are good in different ways
I think the original 1960’s version by Simon and Garfunkel is far better than the one by Disturbed. It’s more authentic, sincere and heartfelt, not to mention it sounds better. I grew up listening to my dad play it, he would of been about 22/23 when it was first released.
Correct me if i am wrong but you are referring to the 2 verslons of this song which was released originally in 1964 with simon and garfunkel only and they re-released it again in 1966 or 1967 with band arrangement?

"But my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of silence." "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls." ... Basically they entire song. The Sound of Silence Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains within the sound of silence
[Verse 2]
In restless dreams, I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night, and touched the sound of silence
[Verse 3]
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared disturb the sound of silence
[Verse 4]
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops, fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
[Verse 5]
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence"
Thank you for your effort!!

"People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening... No one dared, disturb the sound of silence."
"Silence like a cancer grows."
"But my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of silence."
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls."
... Basically they entire song.
Also, the melody is (slightly creepy but) soothing. Thank you for the wonderful lyric video!
Yeah, my favourite parts too, plus “hear my words that I might teach you…take my arms that I might reach you”…reminds me of The Heavenly Father.
I was born in 1789 this is nostalgic😢
I feel you bro i was born in 1345

This song always takes me to a place of deep contemplation. The blend of lyrics and melody is simply magical. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece!
