An abstract idea is a "thing" (a thought), so it is a noun. The "thing" term doesn't just refer to concrete nouns (those people, places, and "things" [animals, plants, objects, etc.] perceived with the five senses: sight [with your eyes], smell [with your nose], hearing [with your ears], touch [with your skin, particularly your hands and possibly feet], and taste [with your mouth, as in, your teeth and tongue]), it refers to any"thing" in general. ^-^

I remember being in school and the teacher asked if we knew what a noun was. She picked me and of course I said a noun is a person, place or thing. Guess how I knew that?

My 8th grade English teacher was very adamant that was NOT what a noun was. I have no idea what a noun does in a sentence though, so it goes. He was kinda highfalutin, but he also liked Mickey Spillaine and Ian Fleming, so your mileage may vary.
