    Excellent advice thank you for sharing. I can recommend the Technics 500 series midi systems as a starter. The amp, CD player, tuner and tape deck are all separate joined by ribbon cable. These can be picked up quite cheap but sounds very good. The amp has a phono input and I added the Dual CS505-3 turntable which again is a good turntable. I bought mine from a charity shop over 10 years ago and it is played every day even though I have a better hi-fi. A set up like this is about £200 in total. I have in fact bought the same system again for my son for his new house as he is now collecting vinyl.

    If you haven't heard vinyl played on a decent system, go to your local hifi shop and ask if you can listen to mid range system just so you know how good vinyl can actually sound.

    Back in the day I spent £1000 on a Linn LP12 , £300 on an amplifier and £250 on a pair of speakers, I have to say how dull and uninteresting it was. Today I have my system in reverse ie most on the amp and speakers with less on the table and now it sound groovy and musical.

    Thanks. I am a 72 year young Dutch hippie. Saw the Doors, the Who, Pink Floyd and what have you. A nasty divorce was responsable for the loss of my vinyl. Over the years am buying my lost albums back. My current system is rather vintage a Philips 312 turntable a Kenwood KA 3020 amplifier and a couple of cheap speakers. Thank you for this video, I feel like I'm starting again. My budget is 1000 euro. I like your 50% "rule". Thinking of a Pro-Ject Evo Carbon turntable, Yamaha AS 201 amplifier and Elac Debut B6.2 speakers. Cheers from Holland.

    Just a quick few words about buying secondhand. Manuals are often available to download free from the vinylengine and hifiengine websites. Vintage amps often contain a pretty decent phono amp (because that's what they were designed for!). Vintage turntables may well need a bit of TLC, but new belts are cheap and easy to find, and it's not hard to lubricate bearings. Just add a new cartridge and Bob's your uncle. As for vintage speakers, as long as the rubber surrounds of the woofers are intact there shouldn't be any other issues.
    For those on a tight budget, brands like Hitachi, JVC, Technics and Trio (Kenwood) were on top of their game around the late 70s and can be had for a lot less than Sansui, Marantz and Pioneer. Dual CS505 turntables are also worth a look.

    Great video, Paul. I bought a vintage turntable about 18 months ago thinking it would be okay for use in my study. Bit of a nostalgia trip really, it being the same model as my first piece of proper hi-fi from 1980. I didn’t expect it to be more than a toy and I am not planning to replace my CD collection any time soon.
    Anyway, it turned out to be in shockingly bad condition. Clearly, my rose filter was firmly in place when I made my offer for it! It couldn’t take pride of place in my vintage rack looking like that, so I set about a restoration, including building a brand new plinth and base of MDF, replacing the chipboard and hardboard originals.
    Much better, but soundwise, not a great result. Then I started watching your videos and two notions started to take hold. Firstly, I decided to upgrade the cartridge to the Goldring G1042 which you praised highly. Big improvement immediately, thank you.
    Secondly, I considered the dedicated phono stage. This hadn’t been a priority as the amp I use is the Sansui AU217 MkII, which I have upgraded considerably, including a full recap of the built in phono stage. Given that the amp was well reviewed in its day and the phono stage was designed in the heyday of the LP, I thought this would be fine. Nevertheless, your words of wisdom on the subject were lurking in the back of my mind and so, a couple of weeks ago, I splashed out on the iFi Zen Phono coupled with the upgraded iFi power supply.
    I now find myself thrilled with my homemade turntable, even though I’ve gone about this in a slightly deranged way. My wife has suffered my obsession through the months, but has just declared that she enjoys listening to music on records in the study more than any other system or place in the house. Finally, I’m going to Liverpool in the morning to meet my daughter for a tour of the record shops. This was not supposed to happen!

      I would offer caution. Building valve amps - probably more than anything else out there - is a real art. And you need a good base quality before you begin. The lowest priced quality valve amp I've heard retails for around £700 and that was mostly because the guy really knew valves. Cheap valve amps look pretty but...

    This is all great, as this channel always has been. But I wish equipment wasn't so damn expensive. I would love to get a turntable, but way too much money. My klipsh powered speakers and the subwoofer sounds ok but not what I would love to have. Edifer for out in the yard is ok too. Powered edifer .

    Love your videos very relaxing explanation of putting a system together.
    But sad to say now that vintage dose not mean cheap.Peolpe now know the vinyl is back and are milking the price in these systems separates.i think buying new or old in the current climate is a risk either way.
    I bought the LENCO 3809 that you reviewed and after setting it up painstakingly, When I turned it in the strobe flickers,and then turned solid.
    I popped a record in and the pushed the play button for the record to spin it jerked and stopped.So off it went back to the supplier.
    The reason I bring this up is I think these table's are rushed out and not treated like it should by the production lines.
    I think if some one is starting out make sure to buy reasonable and reliable company name's.
    I have Sony BT310 at present and it does it all out if the box.I will upgrade again in the future but not without a full pretest before I bring anything upgrade,wise home.
    Love the channel and advise.

    Hi Paul nice music going on , found my lids starting to close at one time . With you 100% about getting people in to the black stuff , we have a couple of very dear friends who had some time a go inherited some rather nice regards But when I saw the player they had got to play said disc’s I had to hold back a tear , it was the dreaded they who shall not be named which thankfully died very soon after they acquired it . But as look world have it they have decided to improve on things , and would you believe it they have acquired yet more records from some one else that would make even you raise an eye brow and say that’s not to shabby collection as they say. So having persuaded them that the garage perhaps was not the place to store them , I have been on a personal campaign to improve maters , I donated an old amp to get them started and have given as much advice I can regards a deck and speakers . But Ironically I I have had a lot of pleasure just shearing my limited knowledge with my friends. So Paul just you keep on spreading the news and as my Nan used to say more power to your elbow son Best wishes and kind regards as always. 😀👍👍👍

    Paul is the 50% rule true regardless of budget in your opinion? Dreaming about Dynaudio Heritage Specials and Rega Aethos, does that mean looking at a TT around the 8500 £ mark?

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Sune - well this video was aimed at beginners so I had budget hifi in mind but I would follow that ratio up to £1,000 and then still spend more on the turntable above that but maybe relax the ratio itself to close the gap, as it where. So if you bought a Rega, I'd be looking at something in the £3-4,000 area for a turntable. As a rough example. Thing is, when you get above £1,000 it's often best to look at the buyer's decision on a case by case basis.

    • @thepickyaudiophile

      @@TheAudiophileMan Thanks for clarifying!! I do feel that you get so much for your money with digital these days, that I would have a hard time justifying that ratio, just to have vinyl in my life, if I do spring for this amp speaker combo 😀

    Just inherited some vintage vinyl and looking to upgrade to a separates system as have had just an integrated all in one for years that is great, but no turntable with it. What would you recommend for starter budget kit that is going to do the vinyl justice? So I am talking about the whole shebang here, turntable, CD player, phono stage, amplifier and speakers, but on a budget of up to £1k if that is possible? Loving the channel by the way and appreciate the plain speaking you do to help us HIFI virgins understand

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  2 роки тому

      Hi Pete - depends on what you expect from your turntable. If you want to go the pure route, the Rega Planar 1 (inc the arm and cartridge). The change the speed you move the belt from one notch to another on the pulley. Very easy. If you hate even the thought of that then Auio-Technica's LP5x. External phono amp such as the Rega Fono Mini or Pro-Ject Phono Box. Cambridge AXA35, Q Acoustic 3020i speakers. Cables from QED (get the best you can afford) plus speaker stands and hifi shelving unit if you can (Atacama offer a good range). Disco Antistat to clean your vinyl.

    You sound a bit like Ivor Tiefenbrun. And you get no argument to the contrary from me. But in these difficult times, justification to buy a Linn Sondek LP 12 becomes increasingly difficult. And when people ask me if they should buy vinyl, I say, why? I have 3000 LP's I got in the 80's, 90's and first decade of 2000 for literally pennies on the dollar for those people who were looking for "perfect sound forever" at garage sales in the St. Pete, FL area. So for me, a turntable makes a lot of sense. But for those who have none - what? At $30 a pop a resounding no.
    Listen to the man, don't buy second hand. Everything that we learned about turntables from the 60's and 70's is distilled into the design of the new 'tables. Oh yes, I have have heard all the "Chinese" arguments but please people, buy a new turntable. They are really good, Unless you have a friend like I had who sold me his Linn because he decided to become a survivalist. And Linn's have a very clear upgrade path.
