    I bought my Oracle Alexandria MK2 through a used hifi gear transaction site here in Canada. I contact the manufacturer (which happen to be in my city) and send them pics to make sure I was getting something good ... I drove 100 miles to pick it up and then bring it at Oracle factory to have it checked and restored ... I now have an awesome Turntable!

      Nice! Preparation is an activity that's always rewarded. More people should practice it, I reckon.

    Bought a Sony PS-X60 off Ebay for less than 200 dollars. It was shipped from Massachusetts to Texas and was very well packaged. I had to adjust the tonearm start point and lift up point and lubed the manual cueing. Great deal for a great table. I made sure the seller was aware of how to pack and ship it and made sure he had good feedback and the communication was excellent. It is a risk when buying anything as fragile as a turntable, but it worked out well in this case.

    I purchased a used Nakamichi CD player through ebay and relied on ebays' "guaranty". It worked perfectly. I also purchased a used Nakamichi cassette deck (with warranty) from a local vintage stereo outlet and it worked correctly also. "High end" (vintage) gear at half the price.

    I've been buying used audio gear from eBay for two years now, and I've amassed a sizeable collection of (mostly) inexpensive used gear. It's been a fast way to experience for myself the breadth of variation in detail, tonality, sound staging that reviewers talk about, and to experiment with different pairings. I've probably spent about £1500 per year, and I recouped some of it by selling items on. Instant expert? Not quite, but it's been fun and I've learned a lot!

      Yes, excellent point - second-hand purchases are a short cut to quality, in the best possible way, of course. With careful preparation, it can be a great way to experience a host of hi-fi technologies at an affordable price.

    Bought a Pioneer PL 518 from EBay seller rated 100%, who had numerous old turntables which were serviced not just cleaned. He described all the maintenance he did on it . He put new feet & dust cover on it. Used PayPal. He packed it very well , partial disassembled. He listed it as excellent condition & it was . It plays great.

    Got a Rega RP6 from the local Hi Fi store. They actually bought my old deck from me at a good price. Was able to good a good listen beforehand.

    I've had very good luck with eBay, but I have always made a conscious point of looking at the seller rating. If a seller has a rating of 99.5 or above they probably do a good job of delivering on their promises. At this moment I am listening to my vinyl on a pioneer PL7 that I purchased off eBay, and it is an absolutely immaculate turntable. This turntable is probably as old, or slightly older than I am but it seems to have plenty of life left in it.

    I've bought a number of hi-fi items on eBay over the years, CD players, amplifiers, speakers and turntables. The first CD player turned out to be faulty and I negotiated a partial refund to cover the cost of a new laser/lens which I managed to fit myself with a bit of swearing! I've bought two turntables, one a Pro-ject Debut 2 which was fine, later a Thorens TD150 which had a very slightly bent pulley shaft, but still sounded decent. With old Thorens decks make sure the outer platter is removed from the sub platter before shipping or pickup to avoid it coming loose and hitting the pulley. I've had a couple of "parts or not working" Nad 304 amps which were easily repaired with a few pence worth of parts. I've been fortunate with various pairs of speakers too. Definitely check the seller's feedback before committing yourself.

    Never ordered a used table online, however I just sold my upgraded Rega Planar 3 to my local record store. One thing I kept in mind was that if I didn't have ALL the original packaging materials, shipping online would have been risky (potential damage to the table). I'd say if buying online, make sure it comes with all the proper packaging materials. It's your best bet it won't get damaged during shipping. I'd also avoid any seller who isn't transparent about details such as cartridge hours, any maintenance done, and any mods (where the mods came from, are they reversible).

      Very true. I bought an almost unused RP3 few years ago, it was reassuring that it had all its original packing, even though I drove to collect it as it was only 60 miles away.
      Last year I bought a new Planar 6, and the RP3 was placed back in its original box until I start building a second system.
      The original packing is designed to withstand posting half way around the world, so make space to save it once you have set your turntable up

    Very briefly bought new amp and CD player (brushed steel look)with external phono- however bought a Sony minidisc deck (very distinct 90’s black facia from early 90’s ) and was so pleased with the process I bought individual Sony hifi components (of same style ) from different individual sellers - I had avoided eBay previously for the reasons you mentioned previously. However had good experience with each item (integrated amp,cd player, tuner and minidisc ) and have finished with an eBay purchased turntable to replace my extremely basic Audio technica at-lp60 - my new (well new to me! Lol) turntable is a dual cs505-3which required some minimal upgrading (new pitch and drive belts, and new rca plugs these issues I had been made aware of by the seller ) but the satisfaction I have now playing my lp’s on this system is immense and what an upgrade sound wise.

    Just done a little bit of hi-fi buying on eBay myself and have mixed feelings. I sent for a pair of bookshelf speakers and one of them had a smashed driver. I had to mess about getting a refund which cost me time. I then bought a pair again off eBay but was local to me so I was able to view and collect .These proved great. I then sent for an amp which arrived faulty so again messing about returning and getting a refund again costing time. I then took a gamble on another which I won for a bargain price. This works very well. EBay is a gamble and you can find some bargains but be prepared to waste lots of time sending things back if they don’t work. Turntables are delicate so my advice is be very sure of the condition before you buy and be aware that a lot of sellers are getting greedy with turntable prices.

    My favorite turntable is my Pioneer PL-560. Got it at Salvation Army thrift store. It needed a new cartridge and no way to test it, but it was priced right, so, why not? I bought my Thorens/McIntosh/JBL system via word of mouth. I was able to test it, and it was my most expensive stereo pickup ever.

    Just discovered your channel and it is exactly what I have been looking for! I am getting back into hifi after a 14 year absence (kids!). I am particularly interested in buying second-hand as money is tight (kids!!). I'm hoping you have done similar videos for speakers as well...

    I’d normally much prefer to pick a turntable up but I did buy my Technics parallel tracker from eBay by post and fortunately it all worked out well. You have to make sure with the seller that it’s properly packed: the arm should be secured and the cartridge separate if possible; you should separate the mat and platter if possible otherwise tape it securely; use the transit screws if they’re still there; loads of soft packing in an oversize box. And insure it unless you want to risk the whole amount. Much better to collect it. I replaced the stylus before playing my records on it. I feel the same about speakers: much better to collect them!

    ..I have not much experience on buying second hand electronics on the internet. Few months ago I bought a Akai AP-003 turntable (150euro's) and got the possibility to listening at the sellers home. Fine! Once arrived it stood in his hallway, on the floortiles, plugged in on some gear. Beautiful, externally in very good shape! Except that...'hum?.. ''Oh that is because it does'nt stand flat. Home ánd stabile and flat the hum was still there. The seller stood open for a potential return, but again a 2x2 hour car ride? I think its the drive mechanism. Gonna let it repair by a vintage specialist I know. So: my advice is keep your ears open during more than a quick listening! Grts from Belgium.

    I second that advice about making sure the seller packages it well! My horror story was a 1979-vintage JVC KD-A55 cassette deck (yeah, I know but I'm nostalgic, don't @ me) which was literally taped inside a cardboard box with the front panel touching the sides. That was it. No padding or packing at all. It arrived with the top of the box stoved in, and I feared the worst. Luckily, JVC made them tough - the deck survived without a scratch, but it could have gone very differently.

      Cash is the issue here - I currently don't have the budget to bring in (properly working!) vintage items just yet because I don't know a vintage retailer who'd be happy to loan them to me for review. This is why I set up Patreon - to help fund things like this. So yes, I hope to but no, not just yet.

    I was looking for a 2nd system turntable, checked out eBay for the last 6 months and it's just full of rubbish black plastic turntables lifted off the top of mini hi-fi systems. Putting the word 'vintage' on every single one of these adverts won't improve the quality.
    New turntables are going for more than you can buy from the shops, sometimes a lot more, £10 or £20 off for a used 'as new' well who in their right mind would?
    I've been amazed by the prices paid and the absolute garbage people have bought. It's an education to sit back and watch.

    • @johnkear2268

      Very very true and a lot of people are adding 'high end' to the description of anything better than a 80s midi system

    • @thisisnev
      @thisisnev 3 роки тому

      'Rare' is another pointless word that sellers use for 80s gear. Of course it's rare if it's 30-40 years old! Most of them went to landfill donkey's years ago.

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 роки тому

      Hi Stephen - yes, the use of keywords like 'vintage' (which adds a sense of positive, nostalgic warmth but, in actual fact, means very little) can be somewhat confusing, especially if you're a beginner.

    Here Craigslist seems to have better deals and most ads being local easy to demo in most cases. I happen to like some older TT's. I use a fully serviced all capacitors replaced, new Mogami cables, nice new RCA's Hitachi HT-550 and Love it!. I prefer a removable headshell, I am both old n old school on that one. I like to swap cartridges easily. My Gif on my profile is my HT-550. BTW it seems very happy with the 6A York phono preamp which I'm really Lovin bought in July. I agree with all your points but here in Vancouver Ebay prices seem a bit silly. Though CL can have some silly prices on it as well, I find way more deals there. Cheers.

    I should have added that there’s so much that can go wrong with a record deck that you’re really taking a gamble when you buy a secondhand one. It’s okay as long as you realise this and take loads of precautions. Don’t use their stylus for example.

    I'm looking at a PIONEER PL-540 seller refurbished. I've got an idea of fair price and I've scoured the web for reviews but the thing I don't know is how this TT compares to new entry level models say the Project Debut Evo or a Rega P1 or P2. Any thoughts?

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 роки тому

      In pure sound terms, the other turntables you list are superior. That said, the 540 is a vintage model (in relative terms) and vintage is both fun and also has an appealing aesthetic. You can have a great time using and tweaking it or just restoring it to its former glory. I love vintage. So it depends on your priorities. If it was me? I'd get one of each! :)

    As much as possible, any big and/or expensive items like turntable, TV's, gaming consoles, computers, and the likes. I am very strict that I will only buy those items in-person, NEVER transacting online.
    Make sure you contact the seller, do a quick background check, check his/her ratings BEFORE you contact/message him/her. This will give you a good idea how trustworthy they are. Also see to it that their account has been around for a long time. Scammers usually creates new accounts more recently.
    So, if you see that the seller has been around at least a year or so (e.g. FB marketplace will indicate what year the person joined facebook), and has good ratings, that's a pretty safe bet that you can start conversate with that seller.

    • @emancaindec9731
      @emancaindec9731 2 роки тому

      It's always my safe bet to transact in-person, also get to know the seller, getting physical with something that you really want to buy is a much better experience compared to relying to a purely online approach. I personally avoid to spend money on shipping as well, I'd rather pickup it.
