Making Green Sand From Kitty Litter For Aluminium Casting

  • I show how to test kitty litter for bentonite clay, grid the kitty litter to get a fine powder in a junk homemade ball mill and then show how I mix the sand and water to make the casting sand. You will need to experiment to see what ratio works best for you.
    If you want a filter like mine look for "Mesh Flour Sifter Sieve" on eBay. They are super cheap.

    What you are aiming for is @ 10 to 12% bentonite clay to sand. Try using a batch method with a cup or container. or you could weigh the ingredients.
    I did like the El Cheapo ball mill though.

    I like the ball mill you made: much easier than what I did. For my Gingery lathe project, I stole my wife's hand crank wheat grinder and ground up enough kitty litter for 100lbs of green sand. It was good exercise, but took too long to make. More recently I bought some southern bentonite and black diamond sand from Lancaster Foundry Supply in eastern PA. Shipping to Georgia was pricey but not prohibitive. $10 for 50lb bag + $30 UPS.

      +Makercise Thanks! I thought about using a hand crank wheat grinder. I thought the gravel in the kitty litter would kill it though. We have the grinder for survival situations so it needs to be in working order... I should look into getting some sand from them as I live in PA.

    Just wanted to share that I bought a 50 pound sack of bennonite for 37.50 from a ceramics supplier nearby and it's the constancy of fine flour, no clumps. I use 2 parts bennonite with 8 parts sand which I've had good luck with so far.

    going to try making some green sand in the near future, I am using discarded glass beading media (free) and it looks much finer than most sand so hoping for a better casting finish I also got my powdered bentonnite clay from a seller on ebay 2 pounds powder for like $10

    Thanks for the ball mill idea! I modified by putting arbors on both ends and just stuck it on my lathe at the lowest speed. How long do you normally run it for?

      +May the Schwarz be with you that would work great! As long as your lathe spins slow enough. Check on it every hour and shift out the fine stuff and put the course stuff back in with new for another round.

      No worries. I just wanted to make sure. Sorry if I came off like an ass.
      I'm actually going to follow your method to make green sand pretty closely. Out of the many I've read about and watched this one seems to be the best end result for the least amount of work.
      Also, have you looked into adding like a mineral oil? I've read about some green sands using engine or mineral oil in their mix.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  8 років тому +2

      William Labes No you didn't sound that way.
      Thank you! I tried to make it as simple and easy as possible.
      No I haven't really. I guess I went with the water method because it's less messy and I know it works. What are the benefits of using oil? I would think the oil would also smell really bad as it burns off. I guess the oil would not evaporate so the mold would be able to sit around for a while before casting without drying out. You can see one of my newer videos where I did a simple casting with this sand: ua-cam.com/video/z-OP4EIhGWI/v-deo.html Thank you!

    Very cool! I wanted to try this sometime soon, really handy! Greensand is almost impossible to get, and if you can get it, its way too expensive. Bentonite clay powder is also very expensive, so this is my best bet I thought. Nice explanation about the litter, have to look carefully which one to get. No cat expert :P

    • @makerj101

      +Clanner Jake Yeah I had thought about cutting a hole in the paint can and covering with some screen. Then anything that hot ground small enough would exit. Good idea. Someone else actually just sent me that exact same video! I am thinking about making one using that method. All though I would not go the the extent he has with that complicated mold and everything. I'd probably just form it with my hands.

    • @makerj101

      +Clanner Jake I'm considering making one using a method like one of those. I'll certainly keep looking into it! Thank you!
      Wow that castle they are building is awesome! They started to build a similar one in the US but it seems they have stopped because of financial reasons... seems ironic considering they are doing it off the land... I guess the workers are not volunteers. I have forged a couple of knives! It's a lot of fun but it sure does take a lot of work. About 3 hours for me since I'm a noob. I need to post some videos on it...

    i would suggest that you weigh the sand/clay/water before you start mixing and after you finish mixing a perfect batch and you will have your own 'calibrated' ratios. then test that ratio on the next mixing.
    once you have that ratio worked out, if you have the (jerry rigged) ability, set up a bigger ball mill to mix the the green sand with you new ratio's. just dont add the water all at oncd (to prevent clumping. lol)

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  8 років тому

      +Randall Lasini That's a good idea! I guess I'm generally not to scientific about things. I just kinda mix things and see what happens... But I will do that when I mix up some more! Thank you!

  • @zacshaheen8286

    I can't get mine to work. Whenever I lift up the frame everything just falls apart. Any thoughts?

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      +Zac Shaheen sounds like a few things could be going wrong. Could be too dry. Could be not enough clay. It could be wrong kind of clay. Did you do the clay water test to make sure it's bentonite clay? How fine is the clay? How much clay did you add to the sand? How dry is the mixture?

    • @zacshaheen8286
      @zacshaheen8286 7 років тому

      Makerj101 thanks for getting my back to me. the clay is bentonite, extremely fine. Is it possible to have too much clay In the mix? also is it possible to have it too wet? one last thing. I am using a 2x4 with a box about 3 feet by 4 inches, I don't know if the dimensions of the frame have anything to do with it

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      +Zac Shaheen more clay makes it hold together better. However it clogs the pores between the sand which doesn't let steam and other gases escape which can cause issues when casting. It could be too wet. Does it comp together when you press a handful? Does it break cleanly? Hmm 3 foot is a pretty long frame. The boards could be flexing which is letting the sand fall out. Try using a router or circular saw to cut grooves on the inside of the frame to give the sand something to hold onto.

    How to find Your mix ratio? Start with exact known amounts of sand, bentonite and water. Make sure You do NOT spill anything on the floor or elsewhere. Once You find the magic blend, just look what is left of what You started with, and You have Your ratio right there.
    BTW, take some time to study videos of molten metal exploding in moist environments. You may want to refine some of Your working methods, after seeing how dangerous this really is!
