Today we take a look at the 'Majjhima Nikaya' or 'The Middle-Lenght Discourses of the Buddha' published by Wisdom Publications and translated by Bhikkhu Nanamoli and Bhikkhu Bodhi.
    ABOUT THE BOOK
The Majjhima Nikaya (-nikāya; "Collection of Middle-length Discourses") is a Buddhist scripture, the second of the five nikayas, or collections, in the Sutta Pitaka, which is one of the "three baskets" that compose the Pali Tipitaka of Theravada Buddhism. Composed between 3rd century BCE - 2nd century CE. This nikaya consists of 152 discourses attributed to the Buddha and his chief disciples.
The Majjhima Nikaya corresponds to the Madhyama Āgama found in the Sutra Pitikas of various Sanskritic early Buddhist schools, fragments of which survive in Sanskrit and in Tibetan translation. A complete Chinese translation from the Sarvāstivādin recension appears in the Chinese Buddhist canon, where it is known as the Zhōng Ahánjīng (中阿含經). The Madhyama Āgama of the Sarvāstivāda school contains 222 sūtras, in contrast to the 152 suttas in the Pāli Majjhima Nikāya. [1]
    BINDING & PAPER
The book has a coated dust jacket and it's bound in a grey buckram. It is not smyth-sewn but instead bound in a hybrid binding. The headband is black, and the paper is acid-free, neutral and slightly cream-coloured.
    CONTENT
The book is translation by Bhikkhu Nanamoli and Bhikkhu Bodhi. It contains a preface, introduction and summaries by Bhikkhu Bodhi, and all of the 152 suttas together with notes.

Hello everyone! Here is a book from the publishers Wisdom Publications. Pretty solid edition but with a few flaws. Have you read any Buddhist texts before?
I do hope you enjoyed the video or at least found it helpful! I want to thank you so much for watching and have a good day or night! :)

Pontus Presents Great book indeed. I read In the Buddha's words and now I'm reading Majjhima Nikaya. It's great to learn buddhism straight hrom the Budda himself so when you listen to dhamma talks you can recognise what is according to teachings and what isn't. Thanks for video. It was helpfull because I had to order book and wasn't able to see it before.

Amazed the book opens that well, looks good! How are you liking reading it? I'm not that good with religious texts myself I'm afraid.

I wouldn't recommend it to people who aren't already familiar with Theravada Buddhism. Since the texts come from oral traditions it's quite repetitive, but I find it a very interesting read for the most part. I try to read two suttas each day (around 8-12 pages). :)

@@PontusPresents I am reading the majjhima nikaya now. For Bhagawad Gita, I will recommend 'the holy geeta' by Swami Chinmayananda. It is on Amazon and the explanations/discussions on the verses are amazing.

I've only read about 10 pages of it. I started it and then got distracted by other books. Seeing this video reminded me that I must get back to it.
Edit: I just saw that you showed the green long edition quickly at the end of this video ;-)

    Hi Pontus,
Is there any chance you have discovered a book that has these sutras and along is well explained definitions and underlying meaning of the verses?

Hello Ann, as far as I know, this translation includes footnotes which explain difficult aspects, and the summaries also help. There is also a "Best of"-Selection of Suttas by the same author, which I can recommend: "In the Buddha's words" by Bhikkhu Bodhi. About a third of the Suttas are from the Middle Length Discourses, the rest is mainly from the connected and the lengthy discourses. The suttas are grouped into ten thematic chapters, which come with excellent introductions by Bhikkhu, and footnotes explaining some difficult aspects or words of the suttas.

    And the reasons

Hello, I can explain this. It is from Majjhima Nikaya sutta number 12: Mahasihanada Sutta.
The Buddha Gotama (or rather the bodhisatta Gotama, since bodhisatta is the term used when referring to a Buddha in the past before he became a Buddha) tried all manner of teachings and practices to find the way to liberation from samsara. Including various ways of torturing himself. Standing in the hot sun, going naked, smearing himself with dirt, extreme fasting, bathing 3 times a day, only eating a certain type of food, staying outside in the freezing cold season, and so on. The idea is that penance of the own body should somehow lead to holiness or liberation from rebirth. A lot of religious teachings both in India and elswhere had this idea back then, as well as today (for example, 'naga sadhus' you can search on google). Regarding these many teachings, Sidhatta Gotama basically "tried them all" and eventually found them to be fruitless.
One of the extreme fasting/self-torture practices Gotama tried was to follow the cows and eat their dung. He even walked on all fours like them to humiliate himself. And he even went as far as eating his own excrement at one point.
Eventually Gotama found that self-mortification didn't work. There was an incident when he almost died. He had voluntarily starved himself and nearly drowned because of it. So, he stopped all self-mortification practices, and subsequently figured out the middle path, the working method to not come back to birth and death again. The method is to use wisdom to train away the sensuality, train away the interest to have a body and mind.
