    Dude single handedly invented a new film format like it’s no big deal. A sort of quad-8 but bigger.

      I’m confused I thought 35 mm video was always a thing in the movie industry?

    • @marianoguy
      @marianoguy Рік тому +1

      @@liindawgg I mean doing four tracks on it. The closest similar thing would be double-8 that would run two tracks on 16mm film and then when being processed it would be slit into two regular 8mm pieces of film

    🤩 THIS IS SO COOOL. My #1 piece of advice as somebody who has shipped a lot of technical products is this: don’t wait til the next version is done, people with 3d printers and technical skills can absolutely use this now, and contribute to your next version. This looks totally useable! You could sell the project plans and STLs/software. I have a collection of vintage and antique c-mount and d-mount lenses and figured I’d never get to use them on film due to the expense. I can’t wait.

      @@Andoonline That's a though one :), although I'm thinking maybe later design could use special adapter that would allow loading more film, we'll see.

    very nice!
    one note you might want to consider for v3... current version has the film moving "vertically", while the lens mount moves "horizontally" - please consider for the new version that both the vertical and horizontal movement is performed by the film (and corresponding mechanics) while the lens and lens mount is static. this will bring a lot of benefit regarding structural soundness, with the chassis of the camera being one with the lens and lens mount, enabling the use of heavier lenses and different mounts. would be a great benefit, especially since such a setup can be flexible about filming at 4x or 3x or 2x or maybe 1x (frames per horizontal "row"). I'd love to hear more about this if you think it makes sense - and will gladly provide any input or feedback based on my thought process.

    • @BlazSemprimoznik
      @BlazSemprimoznik  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the feedback Bogdan. I've been previously playing whit this idea of having fixed lens while horizontally moving the film internally or via some sort of prism split for each column. The problem is that with horizontal movement the whole internal "guts" would have to move very precisely and that would be to complex and prone to failures, not to mention the camera size would increase drastically. Whit prism there is simply not enough space between the lense mount and the film (whit shutter inbetween). Current system whit lense movement is the best option now and it's been tested with more heavier lenses and works ok, even in cameras lying position. Regarding the flexibility of shooting with less columns (to acheive wider aspect ratios), I think it would be possible to achieve this. Recent test I did shown of a possibility to shot in 4-column system for 4:3 ratio or a 3-column 16:9 ratio. If practical, I would implement in the V3 that I'm working on and would be user selectable via gate adapter.

    I apprecited the new videos you added to your website. One thing is still not clear to me -- what is the process of switching tracks between the 4 tracks of film on the 35mm strip? Is it done manually? Does the motor do it? And how long of an uninterrupted shot can you get when shooting, say, 18fps? Thank you!

    • @BlazSemprimoznik
      @BlazSemprimoznik  Рік тому +1

      The process of switching between 4 tracks is done automatically via stepper motor, when the end is reached, the user doesn't have to do anything. Longest uninterrupted shooting on 36-exposure roll at 18fps is 16s.

  • @chrisfisher9792
    @chrisfisher9792 Рік тому

    Hey, quick question for you. The camera rewinds to the beginning of the reel to do the next line, correct? Why not make it record from bottom to top and then just correct when scanned? That way, there isn't a big pause of it having to rewind all the way to the top?

    • @BlazSemprimoznik
      @BlazSemprimoznik  Рік тому +2

      Hi, yes, the current version shots from the beginning to end and then rewinds it, the pause is about 17s. The next version I'm currently working on, if possible, would be shot in a "snake" fashion, so the interruption would be minimized.

    BIG plus for the mechanics, simpler than rotating prisms (which i had in mind the hour before i found your video;)
    and a good answer to the absurdly high super8 prices nowadays
    only 1 weak point: the scanning:
    it makes the per se probably very good material look way worse than necessary
    idk but i guess you use some uC based cmos module with white led backlight that causes color problems, noise etc,
    i can recommend using for "scanning" the frames a 10y old small canon ixus digicam, some models have excellent colour,
    with chdk (controllable via ptp) which also enables raw on some models, small enough to be built in your contraption,
    and use a real full spectrum backlight (there are very simple cheap options for that)
    and then use an appropriate software for negative conversion
    (most softwares destroy color integrity because of wrong handling of the orange mask)
    and you will get excellent results.

    • @BlazSemprimoznik
      @BlazSemprimoznik  Рік тому

      yes, the colors are a bit wacky due to my still learning work with post color correction and maybe the LED desk lamp doesn't have the best color rendering index. The camera should include a good white backlight LED.

      @@BlazSemprimoznik yoldal golden led is good

    • @y-o-u-b
      @y-o-u-b Рік тому

      @@BlazSemprimoznik it already looks usable,
      but besides color there are other problems with the scans.
      your invention sure can produce really high quality and aesthecially pleasing results
      if scanning and postpro is optimized,
      which would be an interesting task to experiment with for me,
      if you like, send me some raw scanned frames, i try some methods and send you the results.
      for backlight i recommend an incandescent bulb (no led etc) because of its totally continous spectrum (just like in old super 8 projectors),
      maybe with a blue filter to make it whiter, so the colour temperature doesnt have to be bent too much in camera or afterwards.
