YES! A true Canadian grocery challenge with real prices lol.... when I see how they pay for stuff in the States I am occasionally jealous hahaha. I realize there is a difference in value between our currencies, but still. So! Having said the obvious, I have a trick I use for my onions, peppers and cabbage: CHOP UP NOT TOO SMALL & FREEZE. Sometimes I buy a fish and I just take my large zip-loc of chopped onions out, grab a handful of onions, stuff the fish and simply add salt & pepper on the skin. When grocery stores or veggie market have sales, I buy the largest bag, wash, chop and freeze. The sauces and soups taste and smell just as good and I save time by not having to wash and chop. Where I live (in Newfoundland), I can actually get the cashew milk for cheaper than cow's milk, which is crazy. Milk is nearly $4 for 2L here, and I can usually get the cashew milk on sale for $3.50. Thanks, dairy board... I love that you did a Canadian version of the Extreme Grocery Budget. I'm always so jealous of the prices I see in the American videos!

I live in Ontario and the prices are not too different. I also like to buy the 50% off items all the time. 99% of the time are perfectly good for days or even weeks (I freeze the meat items )

our prices are the same most of the year in Nova Scotia but your peanut butter was cheaper than ours on sale. in the summer the vegetables th at are grown here are extremely cheap, especially tomatoes.
l'm from Vancouver Island and was surprised to see that many of the things you purchased are more pricey here. Veggies and meat are high. Chicken goes along way. l take advantage of reduced fruit and veg whenever possible. but rely on frozen when prices are high in the winter. enjoyed your video... cheers 😷🇨🇦

I'm from Ottawa and live in Korea - your grocery prices are really low compared to ours! It's astonishing. Having said that, most of our produce is grown locally and fruit is mostly seasonal. I think for my family of 3, $65 worth of groceries would maybe last about two days.

Wow well done I live in Southwestern Ontario hubby a 20 yr old son and a 17 year old son, all eat like men, i spend around 300 a week for them, we rarely eat out. Back in 2007 to 2012 the great Recession, my grocery bill was a strict 170 a week, but then my boys were only 9 and 5 at the time roughly......
Haha boys! Haha!! I can’t imagine when my kids grow up how much we will be spending! It’s good you were able to decrease your spending that much for that time period tho!
@@LifeinYellowknife since last year I have used Walmart Grocery curbside pick up it reduces impulse buys and then I pop into freshco for anything else we run out of. I used to work at A&P now Metro for 20 years and that place was expensive yikes, I know a good deal where I see one, but man it's tough I used to buy a value package of 11 chicken thighs for 6 to 8 bucks a few years back now it's more like 12 dollars, 😱
Oh yeah Metro is so nuts! That's more like what the prices are at Co-op here! That's why I usually only go for sale things! That's a great idea to use Walmart pickup to avoid impulse buys! I'm the absolute worst for that! We have Independent pickup but I heard the service is really bad- you'll only get like half of your list I've heard. Chicken is just so crazy expensive- you're so right!
@@LifeinYellowknife a quick tip I found is Halal chicken tends to be a dollar or two cheaper believe it or not.......I only take one package of course but saving a buck is still saving a dollar.

Some prices are almost equal to some prices that I'm use to in Ontario. I could see some that are pretty pricey like some stuff that's on special there are about a mid range regular price in parts of central or south Ontario depending where you shop.

I live in a city in southern Ontario and i do not spend anywhere close to $200 for the same groceries, and I buy meat like chicken not hot dogs and I generally pay under $100 and that includes toilet paper, poise pads.
Are you in Columbia or America? Either way there is a difference in currency yes. We have the Canadian dollar. But yes I do hear food is expensive here! I’m in an expensive part of Canada in general though! :-)

This year though, 2021, I've noticed that the Pandemic caused difficulties have started to push up the prices of meat and produce. I hope you and yours are warm, well, and not going stir crazy. Lovely video, I see Canadian grocery hauls and they are so expensive so it’s great to see you show you can feed your family well on less. I am only one person living in Alberta and I spend $30 to $40 a week and that includes meat and supplies like tissue paper. Typically have left over for the following week. I think everyone can if you meal plan and simple nutritious meals. If you only buy what you need for the week, you are bound to save money and even have left overs that could be used the other week. I noticed before when I didn’t have a plan and wasn’t attentive to my budget ($40) I blew it most of the time. I tend to buy my veggie frozen because sometimes they are cheaper or they save me chopping and freezing the fresh ones I don’t finish eating. Meat is the only item, I buy discounted if I find any because they are expensive. I stock up if I find discounted meat. Midweek at my local sobeys is a great time to find discounted meat just as they are about to switch over to the new week sales. Like a family pack of chicken thighs for $3.99. Walmart and superstore give me the best deals but I have also shopped coop and sobeys because they are closer and I don’t want to deal with the crowds at Walmart or superstore.The key really is to make simple meals, pasta with homemade pasta sauce with shrimp if on sale or just with ground beef,chilli, fish and chips , I make my own fries in the oven with green peas and I use frozen fish. salmon with veggie and rice or roasted potatoes. Baked sausages with potatoes and carrots, roast chicken with potatoes, stir fries, pulled pork, pork is typically one of the cheapest meats I find, stews.breakfast for me is yogurt with granola or toast and peanut butter, toast with hummus,eggs on toast with avocado, Spanish omelette, Lunch is left over from dinner or sandwiches and fruit. Snack, apple slices with peanut butter, carrot with hummus. Lots of times I don’t snack as I eat a good portion during my meals, keeping my protein and veggie content higher than my carbs keep me fuller and my blood sugar in check. Too much carbs and you crash, this I have learnt.

We are a family of six and I spend about $200/week on groceries. I buy mostly sale items and keep it pretty basic. Three of my kids are preteens/teens and eat a ton!

I guess maybe I should have clarified I only showed sale and cheap food prices. It was confusing the way I phrased it. But they still could be similar! He didn't want to do this and he is very routine and likes to eat pretty much the same things for breakfast and work dinners etc. He did eat a lot of the meals though! I was surprised about how much extra I had.

@@LifeinYellowknife Do you eat eggs? They're about $2.60/dozen here, but we often use them for inexpensive protein. I have a whole list of things I simply don't buy unless they're on sale (meat, cleaning products, prepared foods, frozen fruit, crackers, canned soup, etc.). When there's a good sale, I stock up.
They're about 4.50 a dozen here or 5.70 for 18. But yes, we eat a ton of eggs. I used eggs in my last one of these challenges #2 that I posted a few weeks ago. I'd love to get to that place where I can just buy certain things when they're on sale! I need to get more organized first! It's one of my goals for the year!

I live in a city of about 120,000 which is decently big by Canadian standards. I actually shop at Independent quite a bit even though we have a Superstore, Walmart, and Costco (other stores too but these would be the discount stores). The prices are pretty good and produce is usually nice looking. And our flyers are online unless you pick up a flyer bundle at [ironically] the Independent Grocer. You’re not missing all that much.
Ha, I'm glad you can relate. I used to live in Southern Ontario and I found the groceries to be a bit cheaper because of the discount stores like Food Basics and No Frills...stores like that. We used to never understand why people would shop at Independent because it was so much more expensive! :-)
OMG I am loving this I live in Ontario / Niagara Region and I spend about 800 a month plus for me and My Son 25..... He EATS A LOT!!! I am going through my Instacart for Walmart and trying to figure out how to budget better and eat better because my son has high blood pressure and I am diabetic with a bit of high blood pressure so that part is hard but learned to get sugar free substitutes and too no salt added if I can....
Thats amazing you’re trying to get better! Food is just one of those things that just seems so easy to over spend on because we need it! I’m sorry that you have to deal with those adjustments! It’s so hard- Im trying to cut dairy because I’m so sensitive to it and I generally hate coconut products so it can be tricky! I hope you’re enjoying the series too. Walmart is the one I use but Wow its expensive I use to use the Dollar Tree A LOT.... to get food that you would pay more than double for at Walmart it really helped but being Diabetic my doc has me pretty much on lockdown so I have to order online... I am not sensitive to dairy but I am very very sensitive to beans of any kind I have to soak them over night with baking soda... and rinse them and cook them and rinse like 3 times to get all of the film out of them that causes the gas its very very painful and I grew up on cornbread and pinto beans I am from texas but been here 20 years Happy I found YOU!!!!! I gotta do some binge watching and you help me with my groceries thanks

@@LifeinYellowknife Yes Ok so take your beans / dry ones and soak them overnight with say a tablespoon of baking soda and mix it.... Then rinse them well to get the soda off them..... Cook them some and rinse then cook them another time or 2 and rinse you know that bubbly looking film you see over the beans you don't have to but I skim that off as much as possible because that white film is the GASSES in the beans being released so I am just extra careful because it doesn't just give me gas .... if you know what I mean ......... because I have IBS so I have to be careful hopefully I explained that right if not let me know VIRTUAL HUGS AND BE SAFE HUN AND I CANNOT GO WITHOUT MY CORNBREAD AND PINTO BEANS ........... NO WAY

Wow well done I live in Southwestern Ontario hubby a 20 yr old son and a 17 year old son, all eat like men, i spend around 300 a week for them, we rarely eat out. Back in 2007 to 2012 the great Recession, my grocery bill was a strict 170 a week, but then my boys were only 9 and 5 at the time roughly......
Haha boys! Haha!! I can’t imagine when my kids grow up how much we will be spending! It’s good you were able to decrease your spending that much for that time period tho!
@@LifeinYellowknife since last year I have used Walmart Grocery curbside pick up it reduces impulse buys and then I pop into freshco for anything else we run out of. I used to work at A&P now Metro for 20 years and that place was expensive yikes, I know a good deal where I see one, but man it's tough I used to buy a value package of 11 chicken thighs for 6 to 8 bucks a few years back now it's more like 12 dollars, 😱
Oh yeah Metro is so nuts! That's more like what the prices are at Co-op here! That's why I usually only go for sale things! That's a great idea to use Walmart pickup to avoid impulse buys! I'm the absolute worst for that! We have Independent pickup but I heard the service is really bad- you'll only get like half of your list I've heard. Chicken is just so crazy expensive- you're so right!
@@LifeinYellowknife a quick tip I found is Halal chicken tends to be a dollar or two cheaper believe it or not.......I only take one package of course but saving a buck is still saving a dollar.

Some prices are almost equal to some prices that I'm use to in Ontario. I could see some that are pretty pricey like some stuff that's on special there are about a mid range regular price in parts of central or south Ontario depending where you shop.

I live in a city in southern Ontario and i do not spend anywhere close to $200 for the same groceries, and I buy meat like chicken not hot dogs and I generally pay under $100 and that includes toilet paper, poise pads.

Are you in Columbia or America? Either way there is a difference in currency yes. We have the Canadian dollar. But yes I do hear food is expensive here! I’m in an expensive part of Canada in general though! :-)

That's true even parts of Central Ontario. It's mostly depending where you shop. I find Metro, Fortino's and Longos are a few expensive places.
@@rinat3408 Where you at? I'm in Muskoka(Huntsville), and those prices look about right for here as well. We're tourist country, and our prices yo-yo a bit when tourists arrive, and when they leave. This year though, 2021, I've noticed that the Pandemic caused difficulties have started to push up the prices of meat and produce. I hope you and yours are warm, well, and not going stir crazy. @@1984potionlover I agree I live about a hour and odd minutes south of you depending on weather, traffic and of course during the weekend on cottage seasons. I like Simcoe Muskoka areas but it does get annoying at times. During the covid I do notice the price difference and some products are low

Lovely video, I see Canadian grocery hauls and they are so expensive so it’s great to see you show you can feed your family well on less. I am only one person living in Alberta and I spend $30 to $40 a week and that includes meat and supplies like tissue paper. Typically have left over for the following week. I think everyone can if you meal plan and simple nutritious meals. If you only buy what you need for the week, you are bound to save money and even have left overs that could be used the other week. I noticed before when I didn’t have a plan and wasn’t attentive to my budget ($40) I blew it most of the time. I tend to buy my veggie frozen because sometimes they are cheaper or they save me chopping and freezing the fresh ones I don’t finish eating. Meat is the only item, I buy discounted if I find any because they are expensive. I stock up if I find discounted meat. Midweek at my local sobeys is a great time to find discounted meat just as they are about to switch over to the new week sales. Like a family pack of chicken thighs for $3.99. Walmart and superstore give me the best deals but I have also shopped coop and sobeys because they are closer and I don’t want to deal with the crowds at Walmart or superstore.The key really is to make simple meals, pasta with homemade pasta sauce with shrimp if on sale or just with ground beef,chilli, fish and chips , I make my own fries in the oven with green peas and I use frozen fish. salmon with veggie and rice or roasted potatoes. Baked sausages with potatoes and carrots, roast chicken with potatoes, stir fries, pulled pork, pork is typically one of the cheapest meats I find, stews.breakfast for me is yogurt with granola or toast and peanut butter, toast with hummus,eggs on toast with avocado, Spanish omelette, Lunch is left over from dinner or sandwiches and fruit. Snack, apple slices with peanut butter, carrot with hummus. Lots of times I don’t snack as I eat a good portion during my meals, keeping my protein and veggie content higher than my carbs keep me fuller and my blood sugar in check. Too much carbs and you crash, this I have learnt.

We are a family of six and I spend about $200/week on groceries. I buy mostly sale items and keep it pretty basic. Three of my kids are preteens/teens and eat a ton!

I'm curious how/why you would separate out your husband's food? Your prices looked similar to Southern Saskatchewan.
I guess maybe I should have clarified I only showed sale and cheap food prices. It was confusing the way I phrased it. But they still could be similar! He didn't want to do this and he is very routine and likes to eat pretty much the same things for breakfast and work dinners etc. He did eat a lot of the meals though! I was surprised about how much extra I had.
I only buy cheap and sale items too whenever possible. I cook for 2 adults and 5 kids under 13 so it's always expensive. :)

I have a whole list of things I simply don't buy unless they're on sale (meat, cleaning products, prepared foods, frozen fruit, crackers, canned soup, etc.). When there's a good sale, I stock up.
They're about 4.50 a dozen here or 5.70 for 18. But yes, we eat a ton of eggs. I used eggs in my last one of these challenges #2 that I posted a few weeks ago.
I'd love to get to that place where I can just buy certain things when they're on sale! I need to get more organized first! It's one of my goals for the year!
Yeah I find it varied a lot more when I was in Southern Canada. Things seem to stay about the same price year round here.

I live in a city of about 120,000 which is decently big by Canadian standards. I actually shop at Independent quite a bit even though we have a Superstore, Walmart, and Costco (other stores too but these would be the discount stores). The prices are pretty good and produce is usually nice looking. And our flyers are online unless you pick up a flyer bundle at [ironically] the Independent Grocer. You’re not missing all that much.
Ha, I'm glad you can relate. I used to live in Southern Ontario and I found the groceries to be a bit cheaper because of the discount stores like Food Basics and No Frills...stores like that. We used to never understand why people would shop at Independent because it was so much more expensive! :-)

OMG I am loving this I live in Ontario / Niagara Region and I spend about 800 a month plus for me and My Son 25..... He EATS A LOT!!! I am going through my Instacart for Walmart and trying to figure out how to budget better and eat better because my son has high blood pressure and I am diabetic with a bit of high blood pressure so that part is hard but learned to get sugar free substitutes and too no salt added if I can....
Thats amazing you’re trying to get better! Food is just one of those things that just seems so easy to over spend on because we need it! I’m sorry that you have to deal with those adjustments! It’s so hard- Im trying to cut dairy because I’m so sensitive to it and I generally hate coconut products so it can be tricky! I hope you’re enjoying the series too. Walmart is the one I use but Wow its expensive I use to use the Dollar Tree A LOT.... to get food that you would pay more than double for at Walmart it really helped but being Diabetic my doc has me pretty much on lockdown so I have to order online... I am not sensitive to dairy but I am very very sensitive to beans of any kind I have to soak them over night with baking soda... and rinse them and cook them and rinse like 3 times to get all of the film out of them that causes the gas its very very painful and I grew up on cornbread and pinto beans I am from texas but been here 20 years Happy I found YOU!!!!! I gotta do some binge watching and you help me with my groceries thanks

@@LifeinYellowknife Yes Ok so take your beans / dry ones and soak them overnight with say a tablespoon of baking soda and mix it.... Then rinse them well to get the soda off them..... Cook them some and rinse then cook them another time or 2 and rinse you know that bubbly looking film you see over the beans you don't have to but I skim that off as much as possible because that white film is the GASSES in the beans being released so I am just extra careful because it doesn't just give me gas .... if you know what I mean ......... because I have IBS so I have to be careful hopefully I explained that right if not let me know VIRTUAL HUGS AND BE SAFE HUN AND I CANNOT GO WITHOUT MY CORNBREAD AND PINTO BEANS ........... NO WAY
