Beemers usually clean up pretty well due to a relatively good standard of finish. The perennial problem is people not maintaining them properly because it's relatively expensive. You see them at 12 years old with 4 mismatched tyres, spotty services from menu places and proliferation of MOT advisories unattended to.
American here. My mom & grandma rented one of these when they went to Crete in 2016 for a wedding, and absolutely loved it. I've always been jealous of the manual diesel hatchbacks that are a dime-a-dozen in your country. Cheers!

In my experience, however well it's valuated, that doggy smell has a horrible habit of coming back. As we found out when we bought a Mini Countryman, after a couple weeks of purchase it started to stink again. Despite regular valeting it kept coming back.
I generally agree on the decisions you make but claiming that not replacing 10 year old tires, whilst taking a 100% profit margin is not cutting corners, I can not agree with. I would think twice buying a car like that.
My daughter, who was not brought up manky dirty or lazy - has her car much the same utterly oblivious. House is the same - I’ve given up clearing up cleaning etc she just isn’t bothered.
My car is a bit dirty during the winter and im sad about it. The driver carpet a bit and bit of mud and road dirt on the outside lower down. Just because of the rain and wet road. I don't wash it cause as soon as i do it will get dirty again; there is no point. Obviously i clean it inside and i clean the windows and lights
Does seem a lot of money for a 17 year old povo spec BMW but some folk will be blinded by the badge. There isn't much decent stuff available at that end of the market.

Parents used to have one of these when we lived in France, we loved it. Went on ski trips with it, went from Aix en Provence to the UK on a summer trip. good memories.

The mechanics he uses seems a bit dodgy tbf, it's not the first time. There's always the possibility of previous owner having advisories done before trade in but what's the likelihood of that given the state of it
@@Joshyg02 Well bearing in mind the MOT he got on 7th Jan has zero advisories, we can conclude that either the subframe and brake pipes were replaced, or that some MOT testers are more lenient than others!
The difference a new set of plates makes is incredible, it's often the first thing I do when I buy a new car put on fresh new plates and put them on with double sided tape. I've lost count of the number of times I can be sat behind a car and it's got Arnold Clark plates on it and the rear plate is put on squint with 2 streaky rust marks from number plate screws.
HPA merch suggestion: Branded overalls. Quite a few episodes where these would've been useful! Shout out to the folks at the detailing place. Can't recall seeing a video talking through the options/prices they offer, plus a few soundbites - best/worse they see, etc., but I think it would be interesting.
Great video. Those guys did a great job for £100 to clean that. Surprised that a car owned by the same owner for 16 years is in such a state. Well done for seeing through the dirt.

I knew you were in your B5 S4 just by the interior. Miss the days cars were like this. 118d is a good car, had one as a 58 plate, ran it up to 200,000 miles no issues, have same engine in a 2012 318d now, nearly at the same mileage. Dont be scared of the cam chain horrors, been widely noted that upping the oil changes really does help to get these to good miles.

You're a brave man. Years ago I viewed a vw jetta that stank of wet dog. It needed a bushing replacement for the nct (mot) and the seller offered to replace it and he would make sure it was in roadworthy condition. The car was beautiful but it just reeked of wet dog. I'm not kidding but the smell was that bad, that a full interior replacement would have been the only answer. I lost most of my sense of smell when I got covid 3 years ago but I can still get the smell in my nostrils 😅 Anyway keep up the great work 👍

As usual Matt's is dearest for mileage & year. My son-in-law today has just given £2600 for an 09 118d m sport with 71,000 miles looks a belter full history 3 owner's. Matt's is going to be hanging around until he reduces it as cars with similar milage 3 years newer for the same money. I've just watched video due to family buying 1.

They are made and then can be on a container ship then a warehouse for up to 2 years depending on size and demand and david holmes was after benhams at spring gardens years before willy's took them over and is now nissan dealership. And looks like a motability car at 1 year at service
I bought a skoda estelles in 1980 off a guy for £50. He could not p/ex it. He had 4 Alsatian’s and lived alone. Car was perfect apart from interior. I tried cleaning and was hopeless so I removed seats and carpet and replaced from a scrapyard for £75. Very easy to do too. Only done 28k and was a great winter hack. Anywhere in snow. Replaced distributor with cdi from Halfords and sold at 110k. Covered me in very broke time of life. All cars can be cleaned inside regardless.
You really made the right choice with the prep you undertook..anyone expecting show room condition for a car of that age needs to give their head a wobble
Might be an idea to bring disposable paper seat covers with you when picking up cars in future, just in case they’re as manky as this thing. Disposable gloves might also be prudent…

I'd have sourced one of those forensic science laboratories suits before I entered the vehicle. As previously mentioned can you imagine the former owners house if that was the interior on your first entry! Kudos to you for the K9 clean up.

I've always felt BMW 1 Series is a car owned by people who are not typical BMW drivers and are only interested in the badge and care less with the maintenance costs and upkeep that is vital to keep these things ticking along, finding a BMW 1 Series with full service history or close to it is harder than getting hold of an Oasis Reunion Tour ticket
I reckon the old feller had good tyres all round, and cycled the less-worn fronts to the rear and put a cheap pair up front (given the rears will have worn more)

The washer bottle is in the wheel arch hence you’d need to remove the wheel to replace the pump Matt hence the need for a locking wheel nut

Rear subframe, brake pipes and new tyres (2015 DOT that is 10years old tyres) and the bill for all of those will be quite substantial!
Most cars of that age will have advisories for subframe and brake pipes. Can go for years with no progression to a fail.

They removed the locking wheel nuts, I presume because there was no locking wheel nut removal tool with the car.
