I really like people like Jim and Brian for their abilities to talk about difficult science concepts, as a 70 year old retired blacksmith I possess the curiosity of a ten year old so I truly appreciate their efforts to educate people.
Brian Cox has made me, a working class dunce interested in physics and science, and for that and all everyone else he has inspired he is a legend

You might well be working class and badly educated, but the latter is often a problem with the system. But you cannot be a dunce if you find physics etc interesting. Loving finding out about stuff is. In my opinion, a sign of intelligence. People who wear a badge of ignorance with pride bemuse me. I am also working class but well educated, much if it from my parents and private reading as well as a few good teachers along the way. I am now old, have achieved no high social status but have met lots of interesting people on the various courses ive done over the years from night school basic archaeology to professional nursing, from night school silver smithing to a foundation degree in horticulture ....etc. now living in Spain and involved with a local language exchange group so have learned a lot about languages. Many of my friends over the years have been self educated as well. They are the people one enjoys spending time with.
That’s fantastic to know. You should pursue your interest in science, start with working your way from high school science books. I’m 57 and enjoy spending my free time reading science books, it’s fascinating…
I know I'm replying to this 2 years later but maybe you're not a dunce because if you can understand these things then that already shows you're smarter than you think
Believe me, anyone who is really a "dunce" never gets interested in physics.They often make a really good living that way.
I’m 57 left school with no qualifications don’t understand physics (I’m not complaining as I haven’t done bad in life) but boy do I love listening to you two, you make it sound so simple. Thank you
I’m 57 too, and I was very interested in science as a kid, I always wanted to know “why”, “how” etc. When I left school I studied Chemical Engineering for a year at University, but I didn’t like the career prospects (designing chemical factories basically) so switched to a general science degree and specialised in Biochemistry. I’ve always wanted to know how life began, what is the point of us etc. Unfortunately I grew up pretty poor so I had a motivation to do well financially, personal computers were on the rise and I could see there would be big money for experts. So I switched and got an entry level job as a Computer Programmer, which I was very successful at, ended up managing massive multi million dollar software projects. But I always wonder how things might have turned out if I’d followed my passion instead of money. In the last few years I’ve bought all the school and University textbooks and home taught myself. Can’t get a job doing it, but my point is science is not about having a job, it’s about satisfying the itch in my brain that wants to know how the universe works.

Great stuff! Professor Jim Al-Khalili got me, a working class quarry worker into physics and more importantly quantum mechanics. I still have no idea what's going on but I know I love it passionately. I get glimpses of what it all means. My kids have picked up on my enthusiasm. So much so that my 9-year-old came back from our local library with a book about physics aimed at his age group and he can't put it down.

If you think you get quantum mechanics ... you don't understand quantum mechanics
9-10 yrs is a really important age for learning ... (industry vs inferiority) .... keep supporting your kids they will be so grateful later :)
If you are in the UK, start a degree. Enroll with the Open Uni. I am 39, with a full time job and 2 kids and I am now finishing my 1st year of a physics degree from a university in London. We have one life and there are not enough physicists. It is never late to start. Join us in the dark (matter) side. :)
I’ve watched just about every documentary going with Professor Jim Al-Khalili and Professor Brian Cox and they are both brilliant. Can’t confess I know and understand everything they are talking about but it’s thought provoking and makes you go back and watch it again and again just to try and understand it that little bit more

I've been watching quite a lot of professor Al-Khalili's popular lectures on UA-cam and have been captivated ever since. Can't think of anyone conveying the fascination of the field as good as he does. I hope one day there will be a Nobel Prize for great teachers. He'd certainly be one of the first recipients.
I just found Jim a few weeks ago, and i can’t seem to get enough of his work. I can watch him for hours, and never get bored!

In this country for my 70 years of life, perhaps not noticed for the first 10 years there have been interesting scientists talking about their work/passions which was part of the original remits of television, to Educate and Entertain, many minds in this country of failing schools need to know the important questions about the universe in which we live. I thank both these guys and their universities for making it happen. Enjoyable to see them both chatting like this.

Hands down the most fun talk I have seen, so far. They are truly inspired, as well as deep wells of wisdom.
They are captivating, fun and informative. Their love for science, physics and the universe we live in really shines through, in how much they enjoy informing their audience.
And they bring out the good in each other and seem to just want to ignore time and just keep on talking forever. :)

Jim is a great teacher I would love to meet him
We had a humanist ceremony for my husband who passed away 3years who at the age of 50 ,though it was a very Dad time the ceremony was brilliant, it was all about him! Unlike church ceremony and unfortunately I've been to many! My husband would have loved it,. Humanists are great and worth more attention maybe Bing it😘 to you both , I got interested in physics because of guys like you , Stephen Hawking,, Carl Sagen, and others at the age of 47 I'm now 51 and watch documentaries in my kitchen most of the day, I enjoy learning so much more now
I heard some good feedback from my ceremony for my Dad's funeral, also from church goers, because it was very unique and we tried to be realistic about him, with a touch of humour.
Here, if the church is involved then they do the whole thing their way.

Thank goodness for scientists like Cox and al-Khalili who take the time to explain things to the general public. It is this public, after all, who pay for CERN, the space telescopes, the LIGO and all the other very expensive paraphernalia of scientific research. They need and want to be educated to the limits of their understanding and share in the wonder that you find the natural world. It is certainly important to stir the fires of imagination and curiosity in the next generation of physicists.

It never matters where scientists come from. They all search for the truth in knowledge and are driven into the unknown.

Great talk, Jim speaks with such clarity & explains things very nicely. I also caught Brians brilliant remark about how he has been studying Newton, that Newton made the assumption that there is absolute time, which was later rendered false by relativity. But for Newton to have the insight to be careful enough to make sure to establish it first as an assumption is of course brilliant but also Brians recognition of that has really doubled my respect for Brian as a thinker.

The are great. I can leasing all day I have the DVD from the two professor and the books the are great knowlege in each.
I'm fascinated by these learned people, I just wish I had the intelligence to understand fully what they are teaching. Jim is so interesting.
It's not a matter of intelligence. It's a matter of five to eight years of full time study.

@@kevincarpenter3428 Learning a new skill becomes much harder at old age. The brain stops making the necessary new connections. I can still upgrade the things the I know well, like physics, but learning something completely new seems all but impossible.

I have no physics background but love to try and expand my general knowledge. Something that resonated was the reference to coding. I intermittently resort to coding when the great body of other peoples' hard work doesn't provide me with a close fit for what I need. Just that. I have a small connection with these prodigiously brainy humans and that makes me very happy.
Jim is the best. What he does is far more important than 99% of theoretical physicists.

First saw Jim Al Khalili years ago on Bbc tv talking about quantum physics. 1st time I had ever heard of such a thing as well despite being in my 30s. It was fascinating and have watched and listened to more and more science programmes since then. But am afraid that with my other interests I need more than 1 life to fit everything in.
You need two years of physics to understand quantum mechanics mathematically. If you listened in high school to the explanations about momentum and angular momentum, then you are almost ready to understand it conceptually. Conceptually it's one of the easiest theories in physics.

What a fantastic insight to the lives and interests of two great men. For me the phenomenon of the link between physicality of life in science and the spirituality of life in science is fascinating because it appears one quantum effect proves the other. One of the best books that explains this phenomenon is the book 'Phenomenon' (Amazon) by Neil Fulcher 'Before Conception and Beyond' it is creating the new frontier science of philosophical physics it's worth a read 🌈🎱

I understand that time is a integral part of calculation but if we removed time what would the calculations and our universe look like? Can we calcuate just now. Then maybe then Quantum Physics makes sense.
