Lately I have been doing some testing of the new Companions coming to ESO’s Necrom chapter and while I like the overall theme and personalities of these both of them a lot, one of these companions has some real problems when it comes to combat!
If you haven’t heard yet the Necrom chapter will be adding two brand new companions. Sharp-as-Night is an Argonian Warden and Azandar is a Redguard Arcanist. I have thoroughly tested both companions and while it still is early in the testing cycle I wanted to showcase their skills for you here and talk about what I think needs to change.

Guide to ESO's Newest Companions: www.hacktheminotaur.com/eso-guides/eso-companions-guide
Wouldn't it be neat if the warden companion could you know, summon a pet as well? I feel like the warden bear is a pretty know skill that you associate with wardens, and having some sort of menagerie of smaller animals could be a neat thing for a companion.
They don't want for companions to have pets themselves. Otherwise you will have a mini army of your pets, companion, companion's pet, some monster summon from gear, maybe even a non-combat pet, it will be too much clutter. Especially in cities. That's why Ember doesn't have daedra pets either.
@@insertname9736an ultimate that has a timer to it would be good maybe a 240 sec timer when max rank or give it low health with a high amount of ult charge 👍
Think I'll probably use Azandar as my main companion just because his passive benefits my 'Search all the barrels and crates' playstyle
I just wish they would let our companions use the same skills we can get. I mean a warden with a bear would be great, a sorcerer with a field ultimate, and a Templar that can use the prayer ultimate would be great too.
I get they want them to be unique but that can still be the case if they let us choose morphs as they level up.
Well, damn. I was really excited about the argonian! Let's hope they listen to yours and others feedback and make him worthwhile! Pumped to set up the new arcanist as a tank now!
Same
I was hoping that the warden companion ultimate ability was some kind of permanent animal summon, like a wolf.
@Adrian I happen to like pets( FF11 beast master 2007 to 2021)
@Adrian I haven't met a single person that hates pets lol
I love pets in games especially when you can pet em, but you cant in eso, on my warden i love the bear but on sorceror i hate the volatile familiar and twilight matriarch i only use if i need to heal my teammates but they can kinda drag inviduals from a group im trying to gather so that can just be annoying when farming, and then i just prefer my dps to not just be from pets that take up half a bar too tbf
Eso should also add petting so i can pet my baby griffin hes such a good boy 😭
Argonian is going to be good for fishing and that's the best thing. Farming the perfect roe.
You mean bad for fishing, since he increases fish rarity, right? Though reducing reel time might balance that out.
@@rayray0987 Sharp provides “Sharp’s Patience” which offers an improved chance at finding trophy fish and slightly reducing reel time.
Hiw come the waycher you summon stays on your head and its laser follows enemies mine stays ontop of enemies staring straight diwn and follows them
Wow I was actually excited for the Argonian companion. I truly hope they bump up his abilities!
Azandar is definitely going to be my magic dps companion as being a arcanist the esthetic of having a tome it all just fits perfectly and he looks like he would be a good dps. We're going to be duel Arcanist dpsing through some quest for sure with me on a newly formed Dark elf for the content.
That makes me really sad. I am very excited for Sharp-as-Night and plan to make him my companion. I usually use companions as tanks to allow solo dungeons or run dungeons with my gf so to see that his skills are just demonstrably worse is frustrating. I hope ZoS fixes that mistake before Necrom officially drops.
hope so too! he is an awesome character!
How do you lvl up companions fast
I love Night, my favorite companion, not just because I have a fellow Argonian, he sounds like Garrus from Mass Effect.
Plenty of time to fix this. I was excited about having a warden healer but on the other hand Azandar looks very promising as a tank.
How does the new Arcanist companion compare to Isobel as a tank? Her class heals give her some decent survivability.
Healing is not as good but he has minor maim, minor & major vulnerability, minor berserk, bonus recoveries and group shields so… yeah probably better! Not sure they will keep this all tbh
@@HackTheMinotaur Looking forward to seeing your comparisons when the chapter launches!
@@hihihi1q23 tbf I tested lots of overland content with my isobell and the 2 New companions.
Full cooldown gear heavy armor because thats what I have on the official realm.
Isobell is on a different level those 2 can't keep up with her when it comes to meat shield (tanking and group heals)
The 2 new companions have cool buffs/de buffs but if you're just looking for an invincible Npc that holds aggroo from you isobell is the best pick.
Both companions died atleast 1 time while killing those roaming bosses seeker of xx and isobell just tanks everything and never drops below 40% health.
(im running an pure magicka arcanist build with 95k dps, mostly old gear because I wanted to test how he compares to my necro)
Hopefully both receive some buffs
It seems like Sharp was built to be a tanky DPS companion, which is kit is built for.
Which is what I'd use him for, so I don't really mind.
Same. And he's not annoying like the others, I actually enjoy spending time with him.
How disappointing 😞 Been wanting an Argonian companion since companions came out.
Don't fret give him a staff and see the difference.
Still can use sword and board ward and block from heavy armor tho
I'll be running the Argonian regardless...
Still waiting on that Necro companion 😊
Me too, next year!
Same! I watched this video to see if a necro companions would drop new release. I thought they would have been released this year for sure, but arcanist already has a companion…😩
Sharp as Night will be a good fishing companion.
Was actually really looking forward to sharp
What are their personalities as far as using for thieves and assassins? I hate that basically only Ember is useable in both without punishing you.
Are we gonna get a companion group?
I'm keeping my little bro Bastian. I hope there might be new content or voice lines for the old companions in Necrom, to bring them up to the level of the new ones.
Bastian is cringe.
hope they fix him, i wanted to run sharp, also this just came to me, why is warden like the only class that has almost no lore or representation in game? i dont even remember any quests about them
the armor sharp-as-night is wearing is new or you put that outfit on him? by any chance do you know the name???
That’s how he looks wearing any heavy armor
Would be cool if char applied both breaches like deep fissure did. Would be nice having all that penetration from a companion
I came here for the most important information about companions which was not given. What are the companion perks?
Still go with sharp because I don’t like the other one.
The argonians 3rd heal is bad but it applies it to allies to so as long as your light attacking your healing but it is still pretty bad, still kept me alive
Are the friendship passives any good? Because that's all they're for
No idea what perk Azandar has, but the current consensus is that Sharp's passive is...actually something probably best avoided...
It reduces the time it takes to get a bite while fishing, which is good.
But it also increases the chance of catching rarer fish; which is bad since that indirectly means you'll be catching less fillet-able fish to potentially get Perfect Roe from.
So it's either completely worthless because you don't spend any time fishing in the first place; or it's outright harmful because it's getting in the way of your goal/prize.
why did they make an arcanist a redguard? it would make more sense to do an elf race, heck I'm not surprised after the sorcerer companion was a Khajit.
I would love to be able to set a target for a companion to focus on. Especially with tanking. I think it could be done with the current player targeting system. You target a npc and the companion stays with the target. Because it can be frustrating when you have to deal with adds and your companion breaks taunt.
You can do that. There's a command to make them attack/stop attacking (look it up depending on your platform). You can also heavy attack and your companion will automatically attack that target.
What are their quirks? Like Ember hates fishing but loves rune harvesting.
I just wanna max sharp out for the permanent fishing passives lol
Messing around the companions I wish companions had a sort of Behaviors' setting, for those who played something Dragon Age or Dragons dogma, your followers would have different behavior settings and those would change playstyle.
I think it would be cool if they could have those and you could change them, set them as aggressive, making them attack anything and everything while ignoring AOES and such. But switching their behavior to cautious, they'll still attack but do anything possible to avoid incoming damage. OR if they had a inventory of their own for stuff like consumables, potions and food mostly, and actually can use them, mainly cause the companions are limited on skills and gear.
Idc tbh...I will still play with the Argonian haha.
I wish ZoS would implement fabricant companions into the game that are just generic and did not have any "personalities" or character relationship arc. Like in SWTOR where you can get generic droid companions that function in the same way.
Once they added a Khajiit companion, that was it, I don't need anything else. Only wish she had some dialog when I use the Blade of Woe on someone like, "Meh, they probably had it coming."
Any news about them maybe adding more dialogue in Necrom for the old companions?
Eh... I can tell the flaws in Sharp. But I see that he's meant to be a pure DPS type of companion. Sure, he lacks a lot of things in his class skill set, but what he lacks in that can make up for the player's versatility. You can apply debuffs yourself since he can't do that. That's what being a team is for. But I'm pretty sure the developers will do something about him when necrom releases in June for consoles. We still got a little over 2 months until then.
Has combat been his fixed yet? He looks cool?
Still need a necromancer a vampire a werewolf and maybe even some animal companions with some animal attacks and ultimates..
TESO for life
So, we have a class that's basically a Hermeus Mora cultist class. We have a Worm Cult/Molag Baal class. Are we going to get more deadric cult classes in the future, or will they ever give us a normal class again?
I'm going to test the arcanist in just a few moments. I'm sure it's a good class, but it has lore baggage attached to it, just like necros do. At least it won't be completely goofy playing the main story quests with Arcanist. With Necro you feel like some kind of traitor or infiltrator.
hermaeus mora is known to give his gifts to literally anyone and not care if the person worships him or not aslong the person helps him, which is exactly what you will be doing so the lore bagagge doesnt matter for rp purposes he is also one of the few daedric princes that are neutral
has he been fixed
Warden healer with the infest is alright
is there any companion with that i can murder npcs? damn i need that
Ember doesn't mind murder and mayhem. She's down with it.
@@Ferril8109 ahhh yes i remember thanks. i didn t take her because i hate here piercings ^^.
What? Is that like a pet npc tha´s a tank healer and applies both buffs and debuffs? So you can play solo but you are actualy duo. This seems really fun but also ridiculous xD Could carry any party I guess
I hope ZoS brings Sharp up instead of lowering Azandar. I still think all companions should get an AOE taunt that gives them resistants per enemy caught. Players can do just fine without an AOE taunt but companions need a little more love.
I know itll never happen but I wish they just let us make a custom companion
so you're saying Sharp as Night is only going to be my fishing buddy
The warden needs a staff dual is the issue, but I see what you mean he's a terrible melee.
I hope the argonian talks like a usual argonian. I was so disappointed that the khajiit companion wasn't talking like a usual khajiit.
In all honesty, while it would be nice to correct it, I don't think the lack of buffs/debuffs matters much.
If a player relies on a companion in the first place, their damage is probably too low to make a 5% buff relevant. That won't stop anyone from enjoying this companion simply because it is an argpnian or a warden.
ISOBEL and EMBER are GREATER than ALL!
Not even fucking close lmao
I don't really know if this is a good idea but they should almost make it so you have to choose if your companion is a tank healer or DPS basically making it so for example if your companion is a DPS it won't be able to use any of the skills from the other two trees, now bear with me, then they could make it so they have access to several buffs and debuffs per skill like major and minor breach and maybe major brittle!? but anyway if they did that you wouldn't be able to make a stupid powerful solo companion but they could still use all the fighters guild and mages guild and other utility skill lines or whatever!!!!!
And it's not like you can use them in vet trials anyway, even if they had those buffs I spoke of, and I don't think you can even use them on solo arenas either so.. just why not.. that would really make them useful especially to newer players and even more so for players that are just starting they could also make the skills so they have a little bit of downtime so they're not active the whole fight idk
I still don't really understand what purpose the companions serve, at all
same reasons you have followers in skyrim
@@silv482 they were absolutely useless in skyrim too.
They help solo players.
@@SwiftDuckFPV Isobel as a tank can be pretty useful if you're soloing.
To play solo without the need of player.
Whenever i enter a dungeon with ppl, they just rush it.
I like to read the quest when it's the first time.
I am still pretty pissed that they have not given the necros our own companion.
so Sharp-As-Night is really just Dull-As-2pm-On-A-Tuesday
Cringe
@@UndyingHatred_ Y'know what's cringe. A moist fart that's 10 months late.
@@keres666 I agree, those are the absolute worst.
Like the mimic from elden ring, I want a companion that mimics our build and abilities . It's time that we actually feel powerful in ESO ZOS !!
I just started ESO. I only have 188 hrs into it. I have run into a few bugs here and there. Like in FO and TES. But this is absurd lol
Healets n tanks need a buddy to. The warden is for tgem
True, but they should be successful at all 3 roles. His tank skills just need a little extra help
This saddens me. I've been waiting for an Argonian companion for my Argonian main. If this doesn't improve, I'll sadly have to ignore Sharp-As-Night. 😢
Sharp-As-Night absolutely has a 20% damage reduction skill, contrary to what was said after 2:30
**After watching the Sharp-As-Night skill rundown part, I can say that it was added AFTER PTS.
am i the only one that hasnt bothered to get a single companion?
I guess so
“One of these companions has a real problem when it comes to combat…”
Oh, ok, so just like the four that are already out then. Got it
I wish the classes in ESO were more interesting. Because of all the skill lines that aren't class skill lines, it feels lame. You don't feel like a sorcerer when you're forced to use a fire staff to run trials or pvp. It's lame.
Missed opportunity to have a Watcher companion.
As a Redguard main, I’m excited for the the Redguard companion. Lowkey wish he was a different class like a sorc or templar but they already have those so I understand
Sharp-as-Night...
Night isn't sharp, but it is pretty dim. Guy's name says it all...
He definitely not the brightest.
Hm i like the 2 ice skills from the warden at least (except for the buff since i already got that one), but i really hoped for a ice ultimate. I am not a big fan of summoming ghost pets for just one attack, it feels weird to me. Could still be a cool Ice mage off tank with a frost staff imo. Wish it would habe been a nord instead of a Khajit tho..
That's really unfortunate. I was already disappointed that his class was warden rather than necromancer, as I find wardens to be horribly uninteresting. I guess I'll be continuing to use Ember indefinitely.
I was honestly rather confused about that too.
Like, you'd think a DLC set in a place that is almost just straight up called Necrom-ancer would have a Necromancer in it. And his name doesn't even sound like something you'd expect a Warden-type character to have.
I am even more confused. Warden states it takes powers of Green. Last time I checked Argonians have no connection to the Green aka Y'ffre at all. So why would argonian that is obviously not even Lukil had class that reeks of Y'ffre influence ?
Just don't use him as a tank, I guess.
Having to babysit a companion is super annoying. Call me crazy, but a maxed out tank companion may not do much damage, but they should be really, really hard to kill.
So Isobel still #1
I ❤️ Isobel
Isabel is my least favorite in every way for me. Quest, spoken dialog, personality, ect. I've seen ArzyeL channel do a Sharp as Night tank build and it looked extremely successful. I'm sure once everything gets released it will be fine.
@@TheAlphaOmegaX3 I mean if you have an issue with Isobel's personality you're probably the real problem lmao
@@TheAlphaOmegaX3 Yeah, Isobel is my least favourite as well. She's just too sickly sweet for me. Like they really turned the sugary syrupy dialogue right up to max.
@@CreativeUsernameEh lol it's an opinion. Not a problem. Plenty of others to choose from.
It'll be cool if, after they release a companion for every class, they open the window for class changing on companions
I don’t think there disappointing at all. They stay true to there classes style and
Strengths and weakness’. They even out what your missing in terms of classes with other companions as well. Yes the warden has bad tank skills , as does the warden in general as s playable class, so it makes sense. Same as the arcantisf companion, he’s agood(I don’t say strong) tank and healer and in such his companion is. Yes a lil dissapointed they just have copy’s nothing really new
In terms of effects or airs, but I feel if companions are supposed to kinda be replacements of other players, and what they could or can’t be they did good. Companions will never be as good as a player counterpart period
🙄
So let me get this straight... They not only gave Sharp-As-Night an EXTREMELY controversial and poorly handled backstory; but they also made him arguably the WORST companion to EVER come out?
Why do Argonians keep getting shafted so hard?! What do people have against the lizards?! TwT
they speak with forked tongue ;)
I was told about his back story. It reminded me a little of the character fenris from dragon age.
I dunno if i would call 'freed slave with amnesia' "EXTREMELY controversial" tbh
@@IPFreelly I think they are calling it extremely controversial because of the companion being s*xually assaulted and their mind being toyed with through magic from their past master.
@@IPFreelly
It's not that. It's everything ELSE about it.
It literally has living SA survivors feeling extremely uncomfortable because the story generally feels like the abuser is the central character instead of the victim; several moments are written like a terrible 50 Shades of Grey fanfic; and not even a single moment is spent focusing on Sharp's recovery. Among an array of other things.
It's an extremely dark and sensitive topic that needs to be handled with extreme care; and they dropped the ball so hard that it left a crater in the ground.
isn't this game dead? the servers r empty on xbox
Don't really use them so not to fussed
Companions are the biggest disappointment in years, literally the most boring, generic lifeless husks possible. They could have given us really interesting people, rare races, known legendary people …. Anything but a template …. So so dull
*Companions were a huge mistake.*
They already spelled the death of Everquest 2, or shall we say its coma, because it is still being played by maybe a few hundred players?
NPC companions are to multiplayer games what the bloody mary is to hangovers, trying to fix a problem with more of said problem and just shifting it around that way, at least when they are not heavily involved in the story like in SWTOR for example.
Lack of anything interesting perfectly describes the warden class to me.
Me when I have no taste.
He literally has minor vulnerability and major resolve hello??????? Wdym he had no unique companion buffs or debuffs? The fk do any of the current 4 companions have apart from bastion??? Yes he doesn't have the 20% dmg reduction which really makes him not favor tank builds but he will still provides far more utility than the current companions. Having major/minor buffs/debuffs is the way companions should have been build in the first place. Maybe he is not gonna be as good as the redguard but I really don't see the point of this video.
My biggest problem with Sharp is his voice. he sounds less like a gruff merc and more like a 40s radio announcer or Bill McNeel from "News Radio".
😂
He just needs to do some calibrations on the Normandy
Looks like I'll be using Sharp as a healer. Hate that both are male, and I wish they allowed you to choose genders for companions.
Considering that BOTH were female last time, it's only fair that both are male this time. Next cycle hopefully they return to the M/F combination.
Companions are great, but having likes and dislikes is so annoying, you do so many things during a session and having to summon and dismiss companions every time you do something they don't like is so annoying, I forget alot.
Gearing them is so slow and annoying also.
Considering they are decreasing the amount of rapport needed to level up rapport, having them 'dislike' various things won't be a problem anymore since the amount you get will more than make up for what you lose.
That's why I don't use Mirri. Not my fault stupid torchbugs fly around skyshards. I really dislike seing my companion frowning on something - their loyalty bar grind was already horrid enough. I wish they just added gifts to buy for gold.
