      That's pretty cool.. Mt Harris Loop rd. Near Cove Or!! Been up there in a towtruck recovering vehicles.. I know a lot of the roads in the LaGrande/ Baker City area..There's alot of roads in this area that can be blocked with snow clear into July most years!

    This is so useful! (Great video as well!). As I commented on a much earlier thread these are areas that are on my list for exploring though I will be coming at them from Bend, OR rather than Boise. It is so helpful to actually see these trails. I will be interested in the route you eventually produce. I have used routes from Jason at Primal Outdoors and from Donald at softroadingthewest. But I like that you are coming at these areas from the other direction. Also, since you are bringing your family along your overlanding style is more like mine. I no longer have family to bring along but I like a tamer adventure than those who want to conquer rocks or snow drifts or whatever. For me, it is seeing the beauty of creation, the solitude/quiet of being away from "civilization" and the simplicity of camping. And that seems to be what you are doing. Thanks for putting these together! Looking forward to the next segment.

    Will, you guys made the hard but absolutely best decision to turn around! My best friend and I tried to make just an out-and-back from Moss Springs Trailhead to Mt Fanny the last week of June 2021. Deep snow first shut us down in our trucks(2009 Tacoma and 2012 Silverado, both lifted and oversized on the tires), then on the dirt-bike motorcycles, about 1/3 of the way in. We came back and had redemption and then some the last week of August 2022. made it up to Mt Fanny and then all the way to Point Prominence Lookout. The road is a moderately challenging single 2 track, well shaded and I wouldn't be surprised to have some snow lingering well into early August, depending on that year's snow-pack. I would totally recommend you try it again in late summer! Reach out if you would like the input of an experienced novice who has driven the trail.

One thing I would’ve done is had one vehicle that was the heaviest turned facing people with a heavy duty chain in case anybody slipped. My kids have jeeps and I’m a HD truck guy.
    I would highly recommend Harden brake rotors with carbon fiber, ceramic brake pads. I don’t like to use drilled and slotted rotors because they have a tendency of warping when they get hot faster than standard rotors. Yes, the slotted and drilled rotors don’t get hot as fast as standard rotors. The carbon fiber, ceramic brake pads work very well in hard or severe driving situations like you guys do all the time. When the brakes are cold, you will have to use slightly more pressure to get the same breaking effect but once the brakes heat up, they work extremely well. When you do your job if you decide to go with this set up, I would recommend DOT,4 brake fluid. DOT,3 and DOT,4 are 100% compatible, DOT,4 brake fluid has a higher boiling point then DOT,3 brake fluid. Food luck and be safe you guys.

    Will-my wife and I have been enjoying your content for years now. Your storytelling is excellent, and I love how you both tell us about the places you go, but also how they made you feel while you were there, and what you were thinking while adventuring. I mean, so good. Thanks for sharing. We often pause your videos and talk about things that you mention, and in this one, I had to pause right after you pulled into the Best Western. You were obviously tired, but obviously distraught at having to stay the night in a hotel, rather than per your plan. Hey, having things come up that are not to plan is exactly what overlanding is all about, in our book! You made a GREAT decision to stay in a hotel given your situation, and don't for a second think that it was a failure. I'd say it was a resounding success, that you went out to do something that nobody has done before, you had a few unplanned situations come up and you dealt with them. And now you have a story to tell / memory about your adventure, which is what it's all about. And if your kids are like ours, they'll needle you by saying sleeping there was the best part of the trip hahaha, just because they know it bugs you. Again, thanks for sharing, and keep at it!

    • @Venture2Roam
      @Venture2Roam  Рік тому +1

      I keep hearing from my kids their favorite part of the trip was having breakfast at the hotel lol. Thank you so much for being a regular viewer of my videos, it blows me away to read this comment...I'm so grateful. On the trip..I still feel a pang of shame for staying at a hotel..but I also know that to be a purist at all costs is ridiculous..we just had a trip where we had to pull out because of lighting strikes all around us and mudslide warnings on the trail...and that call was easier to make, I think, because of what we had to do on the Oregon trip..so I guess I'm just agreeing with you lol. Thanks again. Great comment.

    Looks like you had some snags in your trip, but still had a good time. I would have pushed through on that mountain after the tower. But then again, I run a lot more aggressive tires (MTs), and I also have a Warn winch. People always ask me why I run such aggressive tread, but I live in the mountains of N. Idaho. I like to get where I'm going regardless of the weather. Great video though!

      I would have too…but sometimes leadership means taking an L so everyone else gets a W. It wasn’t the last compromise we’d make on this trip!

      @Venture2Roam group trips need compromise! I always run a more aggressive tire to minimize them is all.

      @@jdshaw2751 Ya, good tires with the right tread go a very long way out there.

    I have watched your episode and am a little shocked that you call yourselves offroaders. “Thinking about switching to 2 wheel drive now” while on PAVEMENT. Your biggest fear is a flat tire. You turned around because of “trail conditions” that my wife’s outback has handled with ease. Y’all really should shift your marketing to explain that you’re car camping with children instead of acting like real overlanders.
