I unexpectedly met Mary in Toronto last year during the WTA Rogers Cup tournament. It was such a dream come true having your favorite player you supported in front of you and got a picture as well.
What a sweetheart. I knew Mary at Saddlebrook, Harry Hopman International Tennis. In 1987-88, and I coached her brother, and spent a lot of time with her family, and she was always a great kid. Jim made mistakes, but he was my friend. Mary sure turned out to be a fantastic person.
No other female player has such a beautiful smile even when she was losing...One of the prettiest n powerful female tennis players n great characters..
She always looked like her mother, but even more as she got older, almost a carbon copy! If you watch videos of Mary's matches from the early 90s, watch for whenever her mother was filmed. What is even interesting is that ever since she moved to France to play for France, her french natural chicness came out in her with each year. Looking at her now in this clip, she is totally French chic elegant, and naturally.
This woman’s forehand paved the way for so many after her. I wish we had her on court for longer and that her earlier professional years were not so troubled, but hey...She found peace and forgave her dad. Those are magnificent trophies to have too.
Certainly technically it was one of the best. Absolutely stunning shot. Graf’s forehand was more effective m, but that was mainly due to her insane athleticism.
@@FlabbyTitmuss Exactly, Graf's superior footwork and speed were getting her into position to hit great forehands but if we talk about the shots themselves Pierce was her equal. I remember their Roland Garros SF encounter in 1994, where Mary played probably her best tennis ever - Graf's forehand seemed almost pale compared to hers. Other impressive forehands: Ivanovic, Mirza, and Stosur with that heavy topspin.
@@LuLu-nw6biAgree with all of that. I also enjoyed Capriati’s forehand…by far her smoothest shot technically (the serve and backhand were a bit of a mess).
@@FlabbyTitmuss Another great forehand, yes. And let's not forget Davenport, probably the best ball-striker overall. Both her forehand and backhand were so clean, powerful and well placed.
Pierce was a joy to watch. So glad she got inducted into the Hall of Fame. When Pierce was hot she beat everyone on tour. She played with the Graf, Seles, Novotna, Sabatini, Sanchez gang as well as Davenport, Hingis, the William Sisters and Henin and Clijsters. If not for injury and the early abuse she took from her father she could have banked two or three more slams. No one had that presence she exuded on court. I enjoyed watching her wack the crap out of the ball.
I would have asked Mary, did she try to comeback after her 2006 injury? I was watching that match live against Zvonareva and that scream still haunts me :(
She was sidelined all of 2007 but kept saying she wasn't retiring and was named in the French squad to play during the 2008 Beijing Olympics but again had to pull out cos of injury and that was the end of her playing career. So yeah that injury was the end of her. But like many former players she went on to teach tennis to others herself and according to Wikipedia as of 2013 lives in Mauritius though that might be different now although she says in this video she loves the place so maybe she's still there.
What a charming person indeed. But she did mention a good point in around 03:37. Men tennis are boring, same dude kept winning. But women tennis are awesome, cuz everybody just ambushing everybody. Its fun to watch, cuz so many surprises.
mary's awesome! for some reason seeing her play with the french flag next to her name made me think she was gonna talk like maurice chevalier. she sounds completely american!
To me, her true mothertongue is english, while her french is far from perfect...but she's so nice, she was one of my favourite players, so powerful, her tennis was so spectacular. If she had been at her best fitness wise throughout her career, she would have won more majors for sure. Yet, she had an amazing career, she's our greatest tennis champion with Amélie Mauresmo.
She speaks good french though. Her mother is French. But besides her excellent tennis, we must give her credit for her guts and determination in how she quickly moved to France as a teenager due to her father's anger at the U.S. tennis, and had to quickly pick up the language (she didn't speak much french or use it at all in america), but also live in a completely different and new environment. There were lots of critics from both France and USA, and people who didn't have much faith in her. It was all guts and her born talent that put her forward.
Ce serait bien que Roland Garros fasse plus de vidéos en français (ou au moins mettre des sous-titres en français). Beaucoup de personnes ne parlent pas anglais et après tout, le public principal est francophone. Merci !
Mary was such a great player, so impressive...I will never forget how she demolished Steffi Graf at the french in 1994 (if I'm not mistaken), her forehand/backhand were so destructive OMG. Nowadays tennis is no longer exciting to me, I miss players like Mary, Monica, Steffi, Justine, Lindsay, Jennifer etc...Merci Mary pour tous ces magnifiques souvenirs, toutes ces grandes émotions des années passées, vous êtes l'une des plus grandes championnes que j'ai suivies. All the best! x
@@paulluk7515 ah i see...i just looked at her h2h against all of them and her h2h against Serena is the worst of all of them (1-5) against venus is (3-7) against steffi (2-4) against monic a (4-5) .I trust her when she says Serena is toughest opponent considering what quick work Serena made of her in 2002 QF of French Open. She had her own character and unique personality, also she was the most beautiful player in 90's but I see that she didn't give any positive opinion for the two legends in this period Steffi and Monica and I can not find an explanation

Is it just me realizing that Mary Pierce and Petra Kvitova kind of lookalike? 🤔
They do...LOL...>>>>>
Omg I never noticed that till now
Mark Morgan we never said she wasn’t beautiful. We just said they kind of look alike. Everyone is titled to their own opinion
Yeah they kinda do
Yep, true.
No other female player has such a beautiful smile even when she was losing...One of the prettiest n powerful female tennis players n great characters..
The most charming woman ever on a tennis court. That knee injury was a disaster.
Loved the great compliments she made about Chris Evert. Classy!
And yes, Mary Pierce has an awesome backhand.
I loved her in the 90’s … such a beauty

Kvitova looks older than Pierce
Did she play French royalty?

She's still beautiful. I still love her.
Mary Pierce is one of the most hardest hitters in tennis alongside Davenport and Seles
And Serena, and Venus
Peirce was the person who started it. Yes there was Seles but Peirce was the one who started it and all followed.
@@onetwocue No, Seles was the one who started it.......Pierce, then Venus, Serena and Kim Cljsters took it another level.
It's hard to call who started the trend. Don't forget, Seles doesn't have a forehand. Just a backhand on both sides.
@@onetwocue Seles is the one who started it.
Mary Pierce is one of the most talented tennis players ever. Just pure, raw talent.
The best backhand of all time? They meant to say forehand. Not that her backhand was bad, but the forehand was the best ever material.

Oh my God.... Great tennis player and beautiful person
I don't think there will be a Roland Garros tournament this year.
Until the FFT decided to move it to the fall.
Hingis and Pierce were my original tennis crushes ☺️😍
I would have asked Mary, did she try to comeback after her 2006 injury? I was watching that match live against Zvonareva and that scream still haunts me :(
She did try, but stated she never fully recovered from that injury and that it was just too painful to train like she needed to

agreed..even she smiled,,pretty similar
Good to see Mary again. Great player and love the hair.

Mary's dad is American. She was brought up for the most part in America and English is her first language.
So, she was born in Canada, lives in USA and played for France? I'm confused....
