This is propaganda. This is made to promote the idea that this technology should be used for everyone instead of just special use cases as it is now approved for. Such as people with disabilities. “Not being able to use this tech to hang out with yours friends online”, is not an “accessibly issue”. Please just stop with this crap @GreatBigStory. Don’t by into to it folks.

This is propaganda to promote the approval of general use for these types mind tech interfaces. They are making this to support the idea that there is positive value for general population use. Which is very limited and heavily negated by the overwhelming negative effects on mental health and society. Under capitalism this will not be used the way many of you are thinking….Think more the way Social Media, and Search Engines went, not some future utopia for us all. Sorry to say this is going to be used for control and manipulation.
At the moment there is only approval for special use in disabilities. And that’s how it needs to stay. General use will not be useful to anyone but the top.

That is the most powerful yet succinct way to phrase this that I have heard yet.
I'm always reminded of people criticizing folx who struggle to afford their basic bills but won't sell their Xbox. Not even a newest model or anything. Like an original Xbox or 360 or whatever older-gen gaming system. That's not exclusive to older systems, but it's the most unreasonable idea, as if a one-time $30 now will do more for them long term than having the one simple stress relief they already own. Or even for buying one nice thing for themselves, like any hobby. That doesn't even cover all the other ways people need more than just being not dead.
So, exactly as you put it.

This device is already available, from what I understood she applied programming knowledge to make it work in games.
For disability... I think not so much. You can research PC Eye 5. They basically produce two eye tracking devices - One (Tobii eye tracker 5) is build for gamers and works only in games. PC eye 5 is build around general Windows usage, and is made for disabled people.
So you can hope to get something similar that works in games (maybe for a limited camera control and such). Disabled people would need help with using the computer itself and here they would benefit the most.
I speak from my experience, I have a condition that manifest similarly to what you mentioned.

Fr. It's definitely amazing to be apart of the time where the gaming future is at least coming a bit into play, clearly. But still, I wish we were further along.
The future is games we can control with our minds. Except we wouldn't be thinking of like "moving blocks" and such, but rather literally casting our "1st spell" and moving forward, moon walking, vaulting things, jumping ontop or over things, "equipping our second item", etc.

The main challenge isn't setting up the code, it's practicing consistency with your inputs and training your mind to be able to do tasks effectively with the inputs you've set up. OP could absolutely do it and so could anyone else here if they wanted to try it. You somehow took it as an insult, but actually he's saying it's possible for anyone to do, which is the ideal scenario. OK so this is clickbait (and an outright lie actually)... she cannot play a full game with just her mind... did you notice that NO footage of her playing the game was recorded by BigStory? And no footage of the host playing a game either? That's because all her twitch footage is faked.
    Let's break this down:
W, A, S, D, space, exit, ctrl, alt, i, mouse up+down+left+right+4diagonal, left+right click... that's AT LEAST 19 seperate controls that you have to associate a specific thought process with AND remember each on AND switch between them in a split second... and this is all impossible since you have to then sometimes think of TWO or THREE thoughts at the same time, like W+mouse up+left click, when you want to move and shoot simultaneously.

Id also be interested in the software and hardware could be reconfigured in different ways to capture an action depending on the person. Like would training it while playing normally assist in the speed of training? Like Simply moving forward while pressing the W key and moving the camera toward an object with the mouse look the same to the headset as just thinking about doing the same movement with assistance with an eye tracker?

    • @MrBa143

@@JohnThomas-mb8si What do you mean? The headset is not aware of the game. The headset simply reads your brain activity. You imagine something, which in turn activates a part of you brain. You keep doing that over and over and then you label it ("jump"). You then configure that trigger to a key on a virtual controller, and then everytime you think of that one thing, it should semi reliably run the trigger, which in turn activates the key on the virtual controller.

This sounds like EMG(which measures electric current generated by flexing muscle) not EEG. For example when there's a coma patient in a hospital and they are hooked up to an EEG to get brain wave readings, they don't ask the coma patient to move their heads rapidly to get readings. I mean unless just moving her head elicits some kind of mental response, this doesn't make much sense to me. I know brain games exist but, they are typically very different than this. The brain is analog, brain waves don't just turn on and off rapidly like button pushes they change overtime, and there are only 5 distinct brainwave frequencies you can see her controller measures for 4 of them so that mean 4 inputs, I thought the brain could only generate one frequency at a time, which would mean no corded inputs so, literally just 4 buttons, how do you play Elden Ring with 4 buttons? You would only be able to move and nothing else. Does anyone one who knows more than me know if this whole thing is a scam? It's just weird that the guy who was testing it was only able to cast a spell and do nothing else, which is more in line with how real brain games work.

*BUT* the video make it look like you can play Trackmania or a competitive FPS with it, where you cannot.

As a young neuroscientist whose an avid gamer, this development is very exciting and has been on my mind since high-school some over 10 years ago. I'm acutely aware how difficult it is to create controls using noisy signal from something like the EEG. We'd be much better off with MEG or functional MRI, but the feasibility of such technologies instantly makes EEG basically the only option. EEG is, however like I said, EXTREMELY noisy and you cannot really move without creating huge artefacts in the signal. Just moving your eyes creates massive artefacts in the signal many times larger than any real brain activity, not to mention moving around or bumping into anything. Tapping your skull will create a huge spike in the signal too, so does just blinking your eyes.
I could go on for ages about how difficult it is to find any meaningful information from an EEG signal, not to mention how absolutely abysmal the hardware they used here is (normally you can hardly do much with just few electrodes, usually you need many tens if not over a hundred for source localization), but I'll just bask in the definitely laborious work hundreds of engineers have went through to apply what we know about EEG neuroscientifically to make a somewhat feasible controller with a "shitty" EEG apparatus (yes, it looks cool but it is bad simply because of the small amount of electrodes, compared to caps used in neuroscience; no neuroscientist would use the cap shown in this video in their research). For now, however, I am 100% certain that no complex game could be played with this setup with consistent controls in a high-speed game environment (like competitive fighters or shooters). Sure, even complex games might work okay, but there will be so many false alarms and misses in the apparatus trying to interpret the signal that we've still much to do.
    Exciting, nonetheless!

Just as context to people this type of EEG head gear has been around for literally decades. It is nothing new. The only thing amazing about this is the amount of training this person had to go through to do anything with it. This is a prime example of "Gotcha" journalism that provides very little context in the title or really the content to spin a fantasy. EEG in reality is impractical for mass market use as a controller playing something as simple as tetris let alone VR. Please do your own research and never trust anyone who doesn't cite proper scholarly published articles/papers.

I see this working really well with in-game dialogue choices. Couple that with a Chat GPT like AI and you could just "think" of general response types, yes, no, sarcastic, sincere, urgent, agreeable, disagreeable, etc. and the AI could craft a proper situational dialogue response type based on your general "thought" choice, it could then use text to speech and have your character speak in-game. I could also see something like stat points playing a role in the way ChatGPT crafts your character's responses, high points in charisma or cool, your character responds with something witty and clever, high stats in strength with low intelligence, your character's speech is less eloquent and direct. Half the problem with using a voice interface in video games is that we are nowhere near as cool as the characters we are playing so having the ability to basically "think" say something smooth and witty, then have chat GPT do just that and hear our character speak it, is going to be mind-blowing.

I really hope this is explored more, a lot of people could benefit from this. Anyone who cannot operate a keyboard, controller, or mouse due to body limitations should be given a chance to use one of these someday. In fact, this could be used for more than just for video games. Imagine this being applied for a cybernetic arm or leg, and such. Or for robots to operate in unlivable conditioned areas. The potential of this is limitless, much like the human mind.

This is HUGE for stuff like accessibility omg I’ve tried something similar waaaaaay back during a school trip, but didn’t ever think it could work this way! This is awesome!

This may appear incredibly ignorant, but I have a hard time believing this. I understand that she practiced over 600 hours doing this and that the other guy was also able to do this, but this is getting too far into science fiction. I feel that a lot of the movements of the characters involves head and eye tracking. And EEG is far from being precisely accurate especially with games such as fps. We're very advanced in our technology don't get me wrong, but to get to this type of technology where you can use 100% of your mind to control video games, were looking at at least 100 years. I really hate to call these people liars, but I have to experience this for myself to believe this. I think there's something more to this going on.

I remember over a decade ago when patients were just moving a curser on a screen, and this is basically the start of the future I saw. Very exciting stuff that she has done. It’s not a far leap to small robotics being an application next.
