I was blessed enough to go through my childhood in the 90s, but listening to Pavement always makes me wish that I had gone through my teenaged years in the 90s.

They took everything Neil Young taught us about being slightly off key, married Lou Reed and Velvet Underground and mixed in the bits and pieces to come up with something truly original and beautiful. No one would listen to this back when I'd play it for them when it came out. Now? They get it. Brilliant.

ricjumba The original lyrics were I think just nonsense from the perspective of the narrator that Malkmus invented, but Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins got really mad at Pavement so he had them kicked from a festival line up where the Pumpkins were headlining. For the meaning of the lyrics in this performance, google image search for Pumpkins Bassist and you'll get the picture ;)

The lyric on the studio release and most live performances of this song is "Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins. Nature kids, I, they don't have no function. I don't understand what they mean. And I could really give a fuck". Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan immediately took umbrage with Pavement, even getting them off the Lollapalooza 1994 lineup (though they'd be on the 1995 lineup).
When this performance happened in 1999, Smashing Pumpkins' bassist D'arcy Wretzky was fired from the group. Corgan said that she was "fired for being a mean-spirited drug addict who refused to get help". Pavement singer Stephen Malkmus is commenting on Wretzky's firing and her then-recent proclivity for plastic surgery.
