I had this car for my daily driving, and I sold it with 155.000 km. I fully agree with what you felt when revving. V8, naturally aspirated, at 8.200 rpm: this is Ferrari liga at a fraction of the costs. My neighbour, a Porsche fan and owner of a 911 GT3, got his daily pleasure (for many years) when I started the cold engine early in the morning. My wife reluctantly agreed when I bought it second hand, but 100.000 km later, she said: I would never have believed that this extreme car would be so cheap in maintenance. The kids loved it, as it was the four-door version, thus family friendly. Everybody underestimated the car, which was excellent: if you want to live happily, live understated. This would never happen with a 911.
The moment he downshifted I started smiling with Matt, the E9X M3 is the best M3 imo, that sound can’t be replicated anywhere it’s genuinely 1 of a kind

I bought mine new and ran it for 40k miles without issues. Thankfully back then the dealers never let on that there was a huge failure rate happening. I learned much later how big of an issue it was. If I’m not mistaken, wasn’t bmw still covering these under their maintenance plan back then? I’ve had a few so maybe my timeline is off but on several the dealers would not do an oil change until the car said it needed it. That could be up to 15k miles. Crazy. Glad they ended that.

super easy just replace the stock unit with an android unit from AVIN or something similar with a carplay adapter - got one in my e90 m3 and it makes the car as modern as any
I had the e93 convertible version of this. Picked it up in Munich using the old BMW European delivery program. It was a great car for 40,000mi and thankfully I never knew back then that the connecting rods were all failing on these. The big issue for me was the rear differential bolts would snap with wheel hop or with a clutch drop on the 1-2 shift. The bolts are only 8mm and they snapped three times. This E92 still looks amazing today~~ The E90 and E92 M3s are two of my favourite M3s. And that S65 4.0L V8 engine is a masterpiece~~ One of the best V8s ever built with that 8000 RPM redline~
Had an e91 M3 LCI in Melbourne Red with the titanium interior. Absolutely loved that car. Ive seen it on your channel before. Amazing engine. It once ate a bird! It actually sucked the bird into the intake nostril once.
Great advice Mat on maintenance suggestions on older BMW M3's. However, on your Carvertical recommendation minor damage did not show up on my report, but did show up on my Carfax Report.
Agree with the comments. Mat must be caked in £ but he still the humble working dudes car hero, that don't sound like much but it's a rarity to see someone who has this incredible life and is so savvy with it.
I remember driving on the Autobahn outside Munich back in ~2009 (a big thrill for someone from North America) and seeing one of these for the first time. It was the first M3 with a V8, immediately recognizable by that bulge in the hood. Savage! I'd probably take one of these over a 996.
I am not a bmw or m fan boy - I have 2 AMGs to prove my non-fan boy status, but that is just immense. It always was and always will be and aged so much better than the beetle you are keeping.
My dad has the Alpine edition of this car and it's absolutely amazing. I have been trying to convince him to get the carbon airbox and plenum, and I think I am close to getting him to do it!
@@Ismail-Kaila i use to have a 2006 330i 258 PS, very nice NA engine, stock exhaust note was really satisfying and the dynamics were fine. But not the same League than the m3 V8
If the con rod bearings seize, they won't only damage the crankshaft, but the con rods will punch a nice hole through the cylinder walls, the pistons fall to pieces, they damage the heads too ... So you need a whole new engine basically.
I traded in my 996 for a 2010 m3 about 2 years ago loved the car and put many miles on it! However, like most sport cars when it hit 100k miles it started to become a bit of a maintenance hound. So I traded the M3 in for a 2014 e63s Mercedes with low miles.... Thing is a rocket!
Every time I take mine out it puts a smile on my face. Especially being fbo & tuned it’s even better. Was my dream car in high school. Glad to see it’s still being talked about after all these years. 🤘🏾
This is a perfect comparison! These two are direct competitors on the 2nd hand market. Just wish you had elaborated as to why you would not give up your 996 for one. thank you!
You just reviewed my dream car. The only things I would change to it: - replace the day time running lights (angel eyes) which are white (aftermarket) with the original ones (yellowish), which for me look much better, especially not being so bright. - replace the standard interior trim with the actual carbon fiber trim from M performance - replace the standard seats with the M performance bucket seats for E92 (they look awesome) - add boot spoiler lip from M performance (carbon) - replace the exhaust tips with M performance ones (which look a bit better) Perfect car.
It is funny how he makes his feelings noticable at 06:00 where everything he touches, starting with the i-Drive selector looks, feels and functions better than the newer generation BMWs. (Maybe except the gear pedals :)
Brilliant engine and dynamic handling, the last of the "real M" brand. Much better than the overstyled/engineered new cartoon efforts of today. From the F80 series onwards BMW lost the plot, especially with the silly M-lite variants, although they were admittedly up against it with the euro emission rules and had no choice but to go FI. Can always tell a great M car when it "feels" faster than it really is. From the E30 through to the E9x, they all had that total driving package well covered. Only let down in all generations were the brakes, the E36 M3 evo was the only one to have a half decent setup. And those eventuri intakes sound absolutely orgasmic on any NA i6 or V8, had one on my E46 M3 cabrio and had no reason to even upgrade the exhaust after that. Happy memories of all my old M cars, even though my newer S4 could kill them all in a straight line, it'll never match how any of them actually "felt".
the e92 is one of the best designed and freshest looking cars of all time. bmw did so many things right in the past. the wheel designs were spot-on as well. i actually like a late e92 in white the most but i must say it does look great in red as well. a real keeper this car. even though i'm not a bmw guy - if i had the money, my car collection would be full of m-cars.
@@grovsey3656 hmmm yes it must be, that’s why the 911 wins so many group tests. Try driving one if and when you can afford one, it might be a revelation.
Similar observation and hello from over the pond. I've owned a 99' 996 with factory aero (mk1 gt3 look) for nearly a decade. It's been in storage since July 2021, took it out this past week to get ready for summer. I've been daily driving a E46 M3, including throughout winter (proper tires for the seasons, of course) since November 21 when I bought it. Going in and out between the 2 and came to the same conclusion. The 996 just has a feel, especially an early build without any TC/psm/ nannies. Both are a ton of fun, both are 6 speeds, but the thoughts of maybe selling the 996 this year went out the window after a mile. They're both great cars but there's a reason I've owned the 996 for so long with at least 15 cars bought and sold in the same time. Just hard to explain, highly recommend a drive if you've not driven a 996 coupe of some variant. Keep up the cool videos.
I just love matt doing reviews. I can't afford these things at the moment but his reactions are so wholesome. Just puts a smile everytime i see him driving.🌻🗿
Timeless car. The interior has not skipped a beat vs anything new. I will not hold the quality of the screen against it, or any other older car. Those brake calipers seem like something is off about them.
Gorgeous! Love M3’s this is one of the best. They’re not the easiest things to drive but they reward when you get it right (and punish you when you don’t).
Fairly controversial opinion but I kinda think the 335i is the better buy, they're cheaper and for not much money at all they can become WAY faster than the M3, sure the N54 has its issues but nothing as detrimental as the S65's rod bearing issues Also to answer the question, neither. Get the W204 C63
If you’re looking for straight line performance you may have a point. But the M chassis and V8 is way better. It’s not about being a badge snob but an M car is an M for a reason.
The 335i handles like a sock by comparison and maintaining the N54 is a nightmare to maintain vs the S65. The 335 and the M3 are both technically E92s but the M3 is in a different league.
The n54 is full of reliability problems. The common list... Turbos (waste gates rattle and eventually lose responsiveness) High pressure fuel pump Waste gate actuators Water pump fails Injectors (£150+ each a piece) Carbon build up Don't be fooled, the n54 costs the same if not more to maintain, and once you tune it you'll need better suspension, upgraded subframe etc. By comparison in the 6 years I've had my e93 m3 the only failure so far is all the wheel speed sensors. The strange part is the 335 bmw warranty was £450pa and I claimed £10k through it (as did many). I never bothered for the M3 as it's was £1800pa when I looked 5 years ago.
totally not true... after all a new 3 series is just a new version of a old 3 series... its called familiar and the most bimmer drivers love tha fact. dont hate on a car just cause it doesnt fit into you opinion
@@Da2Pat I never said I hate/don't like it. All 3s are great, All BMWs are great. I just said that compared to what Mercedes and Audi did today it hasn't changed, and I don't like it because it feels a bit dated. That's why I personally won't buy a regular BMW but if I was in the market for a fast sedan I think I would go with the M3 regardless.
I hated my E92 M3 just didn’t bond with it at all abs got shut after 16 weeks. Replaced it with a less powerful but so much better to drive 996 Carrera Solid, heavy and smooth feeling the M3 and very powerful. Nice intake noise but the exhaust is so quiet and boring for a v8 It was just disappointing after I’d had an e46 M3 for 3 years before it I think I made a mistake getting the DCT box as lovely and smooth as it was it was just so dull to accelerate I do look at this vid and think should I get another but I know it would be a waste of time for me
@@incognito96 I wouldn’t say rubbish just it would make a lovely daily if fuel costs etc were cheaper as it’s smooth snd comfy and also racier when you want it too just not light or sporty enough feeling for me
Incredible engine in a "very good" car. It can't hide its weight, but the e90 chassis is certainly nicely balanced and the front end is excellent, much better than the e46. The interior is leaps ahead. Having owned both the e46 (CS) and e90, I can't really think of anything the e46 did that the e90 doesn't do. It's a better car in every way. That's not to say I disliked the CS - it was gorgeous. But it feels its age. The e90 feels like the first true "modern" m3, which is very helpful for daily driver duties. It won't match the heights of something like a GT3 (of any era) but I've personally found it a lovely thing to own. Astonishingly reliable give how highly strung the s65 is.
The 996 is my least favorite 911 of all time. I would actually prefer to own an E90 M3 over it. I have a stock 6 speed 997.2 Carrera S and an E46 M3 with full Dinan suspension, HRE wheels and tuning. I thought about purchasing an E90 M3 with DCT for use as a daily driver. I ended up with. Tesla Model 3 Performance. I don’t regret the decision now that gas is $5.50 per gallon.
@@olly1oo6 I agree about the build quality of the E90 over the E46 but I can one thing that was better with the E46 and it was the most important part… it was a more exciting drive, felt lighter and more racy which to me the E90 didn’t hence why I didn’t keep it long

Loved seeing the giant smile across your face. That’s what e9x are great for, they are just pure fun!
I am not a bmw or m fan boy - I have 2 AMGs to prove my non-fan boy status, but that is just immense. It always was and always will be and aged so much better than the beetle you are keeping.
I just cant live without the S65 engine anymore.
Such a gorgeous car
My dad has the Alpine edition of this car and it's absolutely amazing. I have been trying to convince him to get the carbon airbox and plenum, and I think I am close to getting him to do it!
No doubt how good the M3 is but the 330i/335i were also bloody fantastic
I have a 2009 330i great car but not fast
@@Ismail-Kaila i use to have a 2006 330i 258 PS, very nice NA engine, stock exhaust note was really satisfying and the dynamics were fine. But not the same League than the m3 V8
Have you driven one?
I have a E92 335i with all the usual performance upgrades. Quick car.
@@ivorproblem1332 did you get the diff upgraded?
If the con rod bearings seize, they won't only damage the crankshaft, but the con rods will punch a nice hole through the cylinder walls, the pistons fall to pieces, they damage the heads too ... So you need a whole new engine basically.
I traded in my 996 for a 2010 m3 about 2 years ago loved the car and put many miles on it! However, like most sport cars when it hit 100k miles it started to become a bit of a maintenance hound. So I traded the M3 in for a 2014 e63s Mercedes with low miles.... Thing is a rocket!
Great selection of cars!
damn that was some epic trading u got there!
One my favorite cars ...V8 naturally..this design ages so so well
Every time I take mine out it puts a smile on my face. Especially being fbo & tuned it’s even better. Was my dream car in high school. Glad to see it’s still being talked about after all these years. 🤘🏾
I have owned my e92 m3 for almost six years. Been my favorite car of all time! Will continue to cherish it
Wow never really appreciated how beautiful this car is, I have the f80 variant which I love but wow this looks good
M3 E9X looking sooo good 😍😍😍
Mat is secretly a BMW fanboy..
must be the worst kept secret ever
This is a perfect comparison! These two are direct competitors on the 2nd hand market. Just wish you had elaborated as to why you would not give up your 996 for one. thank you!
Awsome car, still looks modern today
You just reviewed my dream car. The only things I would change to it:
- replace the day time running lights (angel eyes) which are white (aftermarket) with the original ones (yellowish), which for me look much better, especially not being so bright.
- replace the standard interior trim with the actual carbon fiber trim from M performance
- replace the standard seats with the M performance bucket seats for E92 (they look awesome)
- add boot spoiler lip from M performance (carbon)
- replace the exhaust tips with M performance ones (which look a bit better)
Perfect car.
Hey Mat, I'm on of you fans, can you please do a review for an M3 E46 please
I got one, a E92 2013 model, absolutely love it ♥️
kudos to you mat, that even after all these years of journalism, after some $ earned you are still a down to earth guy enjoying simple things.
*pounds
@@abhadwivedi6381 well, pounds can be converted to dollars and euros
It is funny how he makes his feelings noticable at 06:00 where everything he touches, starting with the i-Drive selector looks, feels and functions better than the newer generation BMWs. (Maybe except the gear pedals :)
Japan Red was such a good colour. The Eventuri intake sounds epic.
Awesome. I've just picked up a low mileage Monte Carlo Edition. They will be a modern classic for sure. They're such timeless cars!
Ahh!!!! the sound!, brings back me of my E46 M3.
Simple upgrades, 3.5k for the intake and plenum!
the e92 is one of the best designed and freshest looking cars of all time. bmw did so many things right in the past. the wheel designs were spot-on as well. i actually like a late e92 in white the most but i must say it does look great in red as well. a real keeper this car. even though i'm not a bmw guy - if i had the money, my car collection would be full of m-cars.
Mat should 100% get a E92 M3
Matt, go for the M3. This is a better investment than your old Porsche and more fun! It’s a head turner which your old Porsche clearly isn’t.
This is literally my dream car how could you prefer the Porsche over this legend
Simple, the Porsche is better to drive, more reliable, cheaper to run and a ground up sports car as opposed to one based on a run of mill saloon.
@@MIK23458 I'd agree with you if the 996 he owned was a turbo. He just has a bog standard 996 which is prone to an engine rebuild.
@@MIK23458 bull shit. The 996 is a bag of shit
@@grovsey3656 you never driven one. More fun to drive, smaller, lighter and better handling
I just bought a E92 M3 and I love it can’t beat tha sound
I would never sell my Porsche for an M3.. came from the M3 to the 991.1 and paving it 👍
It's a 996, imo the ugliest of the bunch
He could have change it for a 997 o a 991, not for a red old ladies Sedan 😂
Nor me
Timeless car. The interior has not skipped a beat vs anything new. I will not hold the quality of the screen against it, or any other older car. Those brake calipers seem like something is off about them.
Big fan sir if you and the BMW E92 is my favourite car
Gorgeous! Love M3’s this is one of the best. They’re not the easiest things to drive but they reward when you get it right (and punish you when you don’t).
if i had to choose i will def choose the m3, its literally a timeless machine
If ever an influencer/video maker says "I might be selling X to get Y, so stick around till the end" they're not doing it.
Fairly controversial opinion but I kinda think the 335i is the better buy, they're cheaper and for not much money at all they can become WAY faster than the M3, sure the N54 has its issues but nothing as detrimental as the S65's rod bearing issues
Also to answer the question, neither. Get the W204 C63
Interesting take! The 335i has real sleeper appeal to it.
Turbos (waste gates rattle and eventually lose responsiveness)
High pressure fuel pump
Waste gate actuators
Water pump fails
Injectors (£150+ each a piece)
Carbon build up
Don't be fooled, the n54 costs the same if not more to maintain, and once you tune it you'll need better suspension, upgraded subframe etc.
By comparison in the 6 years I've had my e93 m3 the only failure so far is all the wheel speed sensors.
The strange part is the 335 bmw warranty was £450pa and I claimed £10k through it (as did many). I never bothered for the M3 as it's was £1800pa when I looked 5 years ago.
with regards to rod bearings, you replace it once and you're pretty much sorted...the n54 will constantly need something on the other hand.
That would be like trading a bottle of fine wine for a bottle of botulism.
You should definitely sell the Porche for the BMW.
It's really nice, I would buy it in my opinion.
Faith restored! The E92 is brilliant but I would never replace a manual 996 with one! 😅
12:15 to know of he prefers the porsche or bmw
These videos are so good
Its a beautiful car for sure just make sure you are on point with maintenance as well. It just breaks your wallet but a seriously fun car
I love the quality, you really can't tell the difference from the careow videos👍
Interior doesn't feel dated because it hasn't changed
totally not true... after all a new 3 series is just a new version of a old 3 series... its called familiar and the most bimmer drivers love tha fact. dont hate on a car just cause it doesnt fit into you opinion
@@vid3243 well said
In contrast to the e60, the power button in the e90 only alters the mapping from the pedal, you get the full power either way
Beautiful timeless car. The new designs are out of control ☹
That car vertical checker is very useful mat
Great review Mat love the E92 M3 has to be a manual though
I’m not a BMW fanatic, but maaaaaaan, that car looks so good!! And painted in red, I love it!
What are the chances,
I’ve been looking to get one for the past few days and then u make this video
Thanks mat
Keep it up
Thanks for the video mat!
Buy one - and keep your Porsche for when it breaks down - which it will do - great to drive but cheaply built to a price.
what a review mat.review the peugeot 508 sw
I love my 996 as well, shame Boris and his wife are going to get all these great cars off the road.
Carwow aint anything without you Mat, love the solo content!
I hated my E92 M3 just didn’t bond with it at all abs got shut after 16 weeks. Replaced it with a less powerful but so much better to drive 996 Carrera
Solid, heavy and smooth feeling the M3 and very powerful. Nice intake noise but the exhaust is so quiet and boring for a v8
It was just disappointing after I’d had an e46 M3 for 3 years before it
I think I made a mistake getting the DCT box as lovely and smooth as it was it was just so dull to accelerate
I do look at this vid and think should I get another but I know it would be a waste of time for me
Overrated car I had one good balance noise but other than that rubbish. The engine dominates.
