    Alejandro is the only person I have seen who actually puzzles with 2 hands at the same time. He’s definitely one of the small percentage of people who can legitimately do two things at once.

      I originally got the idea of the left hand from Kathi when see posted on IG that she did a puzzle in 27mins and I asked what was the trick.
      But I agree, I haven’t literally seen yet anyone else doing it than Alejandro in real-time. I believe he has automated lots of puzzling processes, those that most of us still need to think about while doing, and that’s why he has more ”cognitive energy” to do better and almost like multitasking.

    I’m going to use “pick and place” to redo a 500 piece Ravensberger for practice… I’ve seen Donnalouise do it and am surprised how fast she is… it will be torture but, I agree with you that it will be good practice…
    Glad you are feeling better

      Let's say that I don't think it's anyone's favorite practise. But so beneficial and also a cool trick you show for people who visit your home. :) Let us know how it goes for you. I must also check Donnalouise's video, thanks for mentioning that!

      @@puzzlewithemilia I think you would be surprised how many people do "pick-and-place" as their standard technique and enjoy puzzling (only) this way. With a busy image I love to use that technique myself for leisurely puzzling. Huge advantage is that you need no extra space on your table! The fastest puzzler I know who uses pick-and-place as their main technique is "Viki puzzles" ( www.youtube.com/@Vikipuzzles ). She was 3rd and 6th at BOTYP I and BOTYP II (Battle of the UA-cam Puzzlers)...

      Thanks for the feedback and support. Not sure about my speed puzzling as I haven’t really done any for a month. But I must say that even when I played sports in international level, I feel like I was better in coaching positions than as a player - may have something to do with that. The lack of light in Finland is a bit struggle for videos though 😅
      I’m sure tip videos for pairs and teams will come eventually because people are interested, now I will need dive deep into them first!

    I’m glad you are feeling better. Love your videos. I discovered speed puzzling a couple of months ago and I have been practicing a lot but how much better can you get? I would love if you talked about your own progress from when you started until now and how long it has taken.
    My times are not as good as I want them to be, on average I think I do a 500 piece puzzle around 2 h. Sometimes shorter but also longer than 2 hours. Best time I have got is 1 hour and 32 min but that was probably an easy puzzle. Worst time was over 3 hours.

      Thank you for the support, lovely words and great ideas! It’s less than a year on my speed puzzling journey but I’m sure I will do some kind of ”anniversary” of speed puzzling video during the spring.
      And I also had average of 2 hours when I started last year. Actually, I still had one puzzle in November that took me over 2 hours 😅 Your best time is really good. I’m sure you will get better and faster before you even notice it!

    I was thinking that developing the use of your secondary hand, it would be easier to focus on your hands when just puzzling at a normal speed. After a while, it would be natural and would be automatic even during speed sessions.

    • @puzzlewithemilia
      @puzzlewithemilia  4 місяці тому +1

      You are absolutely right! Any way that gets your secondary hand ”included” to the normal so-called automatic mode, works. And taking it slower really helps to remember to try out new stuff.
      I think some speed puzzlers puzzle as fast even when they puzzle on normal speed, at least for me that happens quite often, so I think it depends on each individual. 😊

    Glad you're feeling better! And great tips. I had some practice drills based on some of these ideas on my list, but you gave me some ideas for a few more! I'd love to hear your tips for pairs/teams, especially if there are ways to practice specifically for those competitions alone.... if that's possible! :D I've also been doing some exercises to see if I can figure out the "right? amount of sorting when I flip, though of course that's different for every puzzle and every person.

    • @puzzlewithemilia
      @puzzlewithemilia  4 місяці тому +2

      So happy to hear this, thank you for the comment. I believe pairs and teams are completely different ball game so I will definitely start preparing a list of points for those.
      With flipping… for me it was game changer when I stopped sorting and only did flipping. But now that I saw Alejandro sorting edge pieces I think I will try that and try to analyse (not too easy!) if it has any difference and to what direction.

    • @GailMcCormick
      @GailMcCormick 4 місяці тому +1

      @@puzzlewithemilia Seeing Kristin sort and still get amazing times has made me rethink my strategy too (I'm usually a sorter but mostly gave up on that for speed). I plan to do several drills with one puzzle--time myself just flipping, flip+edge, and flip+edge+1 other thing (what I usually do), and full sort. Just to see what the difference really is. I'll do this exercise with several different kinds of puzzles. Then I can at least know what some minimal sorting "costs" me.

  • @puzzlinghappiness

    Ahh yes, the space management!! 🤣 So tricky... 🙈 But thanks for pointing out that the box cover could be on the same side as the pieces! So clever!! 😁
    How about piece cuts in Ravensburger puzzles? Do they differ a lot from puzzle to puzzle and would it be beneficial to learn at least the orientation of the pieces? 🤔 That's what I'm thinking of doing next. 🧐
    Thank you so much for these wonderful videos and I wish you all the best and total recovery!! ❤️❤️ Happy new year! ❤️🙂

    • @puzzlewithemilia
      @puzzlewithemilia  4 місяці тому +2

      That’s a great point from you. I honestly have not really even thought about the cut yet - surely I pay attention to it when it’s ”bad” and most likely have some intuition / silent knowledge of it. I will take a deep dive into it!

    speed practising: I split a 9x9 section from a bigger puzzle and assemble it 4 times in a row. At the end will be easier to find places, so the picking, moving, inserting technique was in the focus.
    This is weird to realise my brain's decisions, subconscios chooses the next pieces, and I don't need to think about that, just pick the next....

    • @puzzlewithemilia
      @puzzlewithemilia  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah it’s surprising sometimes when you just pick up a piece and put it in the right spot without even knowing yourself how did it happen! Our subconscious mind is very powerful!

  • @peterfarkas943
    @peterfarkas943 4 місяці тому +2

    how to you track your times (or a ppm value)? With different puzzles there is variation in time. So not a good visible trend.

    • @puzzlewithemilia
      @puzzlewithemilia  4 місяці тому +1

      I personally track both total times and ppm. I think it would be interesting if it would be possibly to track ppm changes throughout the whole process minute by minute of doing one puzzle but I guess that would need some type of AI camera program or lots of manual calculating from a video. 😅
      More important is to follow on average times of multiple puzzles and not too often. Depends ofc how many puzzles you do a month but I do 3-5 puzzles in a week and I usually compare at monthly averages for development. Weekly averages wouldn’t show too much for me anymore. It’s like your puppy growing up, you don’t really see it but people who see your dog not that often see it clearly.
      Sometimes comparing to other people’s time helps too. For example if you do old WJPC puzzles, you could compare your time with a specific person (similar to you if possible to choose) from qualification to final - all puzzles - and see if you are ”catching up” with the time difference. This ofc requires that you do puzzles and practise in between. If I would do now all puzzles in a row from e.g. Kathi’s WJPC journey I wouldn’t see any difference but if I do first one, then practise, then do another she did in semifinal, then practise again, and then do her final puzzle, I could possible somehow compare if I’m getting closer = developing.

      @@puzzlewithemilia So do you track this is an excel sheet?
      One idea for flipping, this is important to put the piece as close as possible after flipping, not a further spot on a table.
      Could be funny to see an in process ppm tracking. First few minutes: 0, then starts to speed up, will be some up and down speeding depends on the image's area. The full assembling is more important I thing.
      You can count it from the video, and stop in every minutes, then write down the full assembled pieces number. Rest is an excel formula. If you join islands, this is no extra number.

    • @puzzlewithemilia
      @puzzlewithemilia  4 місяці тому +1

      @@peterfarkas943 I used Puzzle Tracker app earlier but I found excel easier. The app also has paid version, not sure what features does it have.
      And that’s a good point for flipping too. To avoid all extra and unnecessary moving.
      I think I will try out the ppm calculation later. Hopefully for some puzzle I do super fast so there is less minutes to calculate.

    Are puzzle trays necessary for speed puzzling? If so, How do you effectively organize them so they do get in the way? 😃🧩

    • @puzzlewithemilia
      @puzzlewithemilia  4 місяці тому +2

      I would not use puzzle trays for solo competitions (as long as they are with 500 piece puzzle). However, I have seen those used in pair and team competitions with bigger puzzles and there they do not only make sense with sorting but also make space management easier. In pairs/teams in WJPC I would place trays outside of the white puzzle building area on the sides of the table. :)
