    I can’t believe you took this on while it was raining. Now that’s dedication!

    Nice smelling neem oil? Every neem oil I’ve ever smelled was always so putrid ... I like the sound of nice smelling neem oil 😃 I hope this does the job once and for all 🙏🏼

    Thought that we might be having an afternoon tea/coffee & some biscuits when I saw your mug & knife.😊 Love the sound of the rain btw.
    Lol, that’s how I work too-use whatever you have at hand. Needed this video today, hope I can get rid of my scale before I need to take my orchids in the house for autumn. (From NY)
    Thanks for all your videos, I have enjoyed every one & learned much too.

    I had some neem oil once and ended up dumping it because I couldn't stand the smell. I see yours is organic and certainly a different make. Love the saucer shape on the top of the sprayer - I often end up missing the top of mine as it's just the size of the pump. I'm treating bugs today - spraying the mounts 7 days after their first treatment. It's a right pain but I'm hoping that two months worth of treatments should see the back of them (yes - it's scale.)

      I saw you were also battling scale, Roger. Annoying little pests. I would normally spray the orchids more comprehensively but it was tricky with the camera in the rain. I am using the neem in the greenhouse too as I have white fly there, thanks to the veg I am growing this year. My friend swears by it for white fly.

    Rachel, that’s very nice you spray your plants. The scale I have here in the US, they’re stuck on the leaves and have to be manually removed on each and every leaf front and back. I even have to use a Qtip to get them out of the crevices. Of course it’s soaked with neem oil. So tedious! Dani, Miss Orchid girl, suggested buying carnivorous plants to eat the fungus gnats which are part of the scale lifecycle. Another project. Such an ordeal these pests!

      Ah yes, the oil makes removal easier. We will see how it goes. By the way, I really can't stand pinguiculas. Any plant that leaves its half-digested lunch on view is not cool in my book. Thanks for watching.

    FANTASTIC video Rachel, and I really love Neem oil it has made a massive difference at keeping pests away, this year has been the first year we have not had spider mite damage on our cacti and the Neem has kept them away, I really love the smell of Neem oil too :-D thanks so much for sharing, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Wexford for a fantastic afternoon XXXX

      So lovely to hear from you, Lyn. I have also been using the neem in the greenhouse and did hesitate before spraying my succulents. I am glad it has worked well for you. Hope you are having a great evening, you and Hans xx

    I hope it works for you. I had a mealy bug infestation on my streptocarpus and begonias. I tried all sorts to no avail and in February this year I bit the bullet and destroyed them all. Nearly 50 plants!!! Good luck and all the best.

      Well, I think sometimes we do have to draw a line under things and start with a clean slate. I am sure you will build up your collection again over time. Thanks for watching and have a nice evening.

    You were very brave filming the whole process in the rain! I could not tell if it was irony or else I am not able to wrap my head around the fact you seem to like the smell of neem oil! :O But I wish you did since you mentioned that you had to go through the process several more times. I will keep my fingers crossed that you will beat them. I hope you and your family are well. :)

      Haha. I guess I enjoy odd smells, judging from the comments on this video. I was at the spraying again today, this time leaving the pots to soak in the liquid for a while. This time it decided not to rain, thankfully. PS Enjoying your recent watering videos.

    Hi Rachel! How did the neem oil treatment work out? Did it get rid of the scale problem completely? I once bought neem oil, years ago, to try against mites, but I gave up after one application because I couldn't stand the smell. But I believe maybe different brands or types of neem oil might be different? I wish I had found one that smelled nice. I have paraffin oil, and I used it successfully against mites, and the good thing is that it doesn't have any scent at all. I think all these oils work by suffocating the mites/scale/mealybugs? Or does neem oil have other properties as well, maybe it works as a kind of insecticide, which makes it more effective?

      Hi Andrea. I have to say that I did not get rid of the scale completely. I thought it was gone but I see it back again now. I may not have adhered properly to the application schedule however. It is all a bit of a pain!

    I am pretty sure that Neem Oil is a systematic treatment. Could you not water it in and let the plant do the dispensing?

    Smells gorgeous? 🤔Like what? Mine smells like fried garlic 😀 If I was you, I would soak orchids in to neem oil mix,as it does work as systemic pesticide too.I did it with my Pamianthes, they are still alive.Only I using Ecover washing up liquid, as it is eco-friendly

      I can't believe how everyone is saying neem oil smells bad. I am in shock 😀 I guess I will try soaking at least some of my plants next time. I don't like sharing water but I guess these guys are already sharing all their bugs. Thanks, Liga. Still have white fly in the greenhouse though. Bloody veg!

    Can I ask a totally unrelated question Rachel....does your Sharry Baby ever get full sun? Thanks.

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  4 роки тому

      I have't tried Sharry Baby on a south-facing windowsill, Maureen. Just west-facing. This is only because I have so little south-facing available space with all the cattleyas.

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  4 роки тому

      @@maureen6710 Sharry Baby does like a lot of light so do try it. I would say normally to move it gradually into its position of full sun so that you can react if it seems to burn. However, this summer is so dull, you can probably get away with just moving it.

    I've read that neem becomes ineffective at certain temperatures. Here in Houston, that is basically all year round. I tried to use neem to treat mealybugs, much to no avail. Worse... I was using it on an indoor plant that I could not move outside. Awful.

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  4 роки тому

      That is very interesting but disappointing. I know the oil is solid in colder temperatures.

    We have neem tree but no ne oil products 😅 I guess I just boil the leaves and spray on the leaves then... Scale pests are the worst of all orchid pests especially for my Catts.😅

  • @michaelmccarthy4077
    @michaelmccarthy4077 4 роки тому

    Important to note: Neem oil needs to be applied either late in the day or on cloudy days if the plants get any direct sun, as it will scorch the leaves if the overhead sun hits the wet product.
    Of course, I never had much luck treating anything but whitefly with it so I stopped using it.
