This lady is a class act and set in motion for women to follow. Now we have the Force sisters beating the men. One of them now holds the record for quickest run in a top fuel dragster. Cant remember which one? They like Shirley are also class acts.
1985 winter Nationals I was an Auto shop teacher at Indio High School Indio Ca. Took my Students to the Winter Nationals Saw Shirley on her comeback run. Been a fan ever since.
It was wonderful to see this footage of the Shirley being interviewed on the best late night show by the best late night show host ever. Happy early 84th birthday to Shirley and rest in peace Johnny Carson.
Dear Shirley if you ever read this ,I'm in my early 50s I still remember seen you in 1982 in Salt Lake city utah, when I was in the 3rd grade,I remember your great smile when I had you autograph my t shirt I was wearing, and still have this shirt even today you have always been my favorite nhra drag race fan.
Shirley isn't just one of greatest 👩 woman 🏁 racers .... She is one of the greatest racers of all time ... PERIOD not to mention class personified , a humble and all-around nice lady 👍👍🏆🏆
I remember sitting on her tire when I was a little kid in the 70s. Was either in Ohio or Indianapolis I cant remember. In the pits, the crew was so nice to me, we were all pulling for her to win! To bad no cellphones back then I would have loved a picture of that!
I still have the autographed picture of her and the Zantax car in my office. I'll never forget the day I saw her at the Detroit Autorama Show. What a "Class Act" A real Lady !!
Shirley is STILL a hottie, to me. I watched her racing her cars, and I cheered for her when I was just a kid. She is a fascinating & accomplished woman 🏆. -04/2024
current fastest funny car run is 341.68 mph and current fastest top fuel dragster run is 338.94 mph. So I am no wizard with numbers but I wouldn't call 2.74 mph faster almost twice as fast.
Shirley born in Schenectady NY and ran on the Fonda Speedway Dragstrip early on. Today Fonda is the home of DIRT great Stew Friesen...about a mile from my house.
I lived close to the Ontario Motor Speedway in 1976. I wasn't a huge fan of racing but still love a thrill so we went.... There was a group of news people waiting to go thru the tunnel that led to the inside of the track and starting line....about 4 of us blended in and made it! I stood about maybe 12 ft away from the staging area....watched some alcohol? cars go off...and that was pretty cool...but then the top fuelers rolled in....Shirley was one of the 2 first cars off....Holy shit balls!...My tee-shirt was rippling with every piston....ground shaking...dragsters are freaking huge when you stand next to one....especially when running....they did their burn outs and all...f'n crazy.....then...when the green lite lit...they were just.....gone......from full size monster to a dot down the track in an instant....We eventually had to leave the starting line...but got to stay track side down the lane a bit....what a day that was!!!!! Thanks Shirley.....my first dragster thrill I'll never ever forget.
These cars are going almost 340 miles an hour, in 1000 feet. Almost 100 miles an hour faster then when she was talking about, in less than a quarter mile.
@nicholaslayitan8374, Danica Patrick became the most successful female racecar driver in typical auto racing history. Guaranteed far better than you could ever do, PUTZ.
Shirley was a good balance of seriousness and good humor. I think she has since made her peace with "Cha-Cha" but notice that Johnny knew who Cha-Cha was and recognized her. Johnny took her seriously and one could only expect that something goofy and entertaining would happen like the golf cart race.
It would be interesting if she could give women in those middle eastern countries that are banned from driving, driving lessons. What would they think! 😎
She did it when it was a real quarter mile not this bullshit racing they do today. There are still a couple real tracks around like Bakersfield in California.
A lot of these men that are driving their cars, have a crew that do all of the work on the cars. Most drivers don't work on their own cars. So, she beat a lot of those guys.
It's 2024, and June 19th
she's gonna be 84, God Bless her!
What a sweet lady.
Johnny Carson was the best. He really let his guests shine.💫
She's 83 now..
He s noted in a book on communication, as a good way to have a conversation. He will ask his next question from the previous answer
A thousand thumbs up to Cha Cha Muldowney the greatest.
I speak that nickname with reverence!!!
Amen
Connie gave her that
nickname. Not sure if she didn't find it sexist later on...
She always hated that nickname

I remember that Nick name. She was awesome drag racer. Got the privilege to meet her at a race here in Phoenix. What a sweetheart.

I always looked forward to the Johnny Carson show and his interesting and entertaining guest (and Johnny's one liners.
Shirley Cha-Cha Muldowney. What a LEGEND!!!!!

Erica Enders is dominating Pro Stock!!
She is an incredible person and woman.
This is classic. The first lady of drag racing and king of late night comedy. God bless Shirley on her 84th birthday. RIP Johnny.
Amazing to think that the cars now go over 330 mph in only 1000 feet. Shirley is a badass and a legend!
Johnny Carson, is a class interviewer, unlike the idiots who have late night talk shows today.
Johnny was a whole different person off camera.
No one else even comes close to Johnny.
what an incredible person and interview. thanks for posting.

Shirley muldowney is the greatest.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Love and Miss You Shirley Always. Thank You for all You gave US
Was able to speak briefly with her at Fremont Drag strip years ago when she was driving funnies, 100% hardcore operator!
One Woman who prove human beings can do anything!!! Women are amazing.....coming from a man
Thank You Shirley!!
First class 🏆
Finally got a chance to meet her. Awesome person
One of my favorite racers in any series ever. Seen her race many times.
I still have the autographed picture of her and the Zantax car in my office. I'll never forget the day I saw her at the Detroit Autorama Show. What a "Class Act" A real Lady !!
Premature acceleration followed by a flat money shot. Perfect Johnny.
What a great piece. Who is better than these two?
Years ago at Autorama I told her it was fun seeing her walk that red "beer" car. Gallery roared when she called Kenny B. A putz.
Back when late night TV was worth watching...
One of my most remembered races was the 75 or 6 spring Nationals when she beat Don garlits in the finals cha cha think pink
Hail to the Queen.....
Shirley is STILL a hottie, to me. I watched her racing her cars, and I cheered for her when I was just a kid. She is a fascinating & accomplished woman 🏆. -04/2024
LEGEND
Miss JC what a very good interviewer not the clowns in late night now a days.
Met this lady as she was just becoming famous. Had an autographed photo been lost during a move.
Truly Amazing !
Shirley rocks
I met Shirley at the Cajun Nationals in Baton Rouge in the 80"S. Pure Class!
,,,,,,,,,,,,I seen her race in 1969.........I was 18 and it was my first time at a drag strip......
Shirley was doing 250 mph in the 1/4 mile. Brittany Force did almost 340 mph and in 1,000 feet! Funny cars today are almost as fast as Top Fuel.
Big difference when it's 40+ years apart
current fastest funny car run is 341.68 mph and current fastest top fuel dragster run is 338.94 mph. So I am no wizard with numbers but I wouldn't call 2.74 mph faster almost twice as fast.
You could always tell when Johnny genuinely admired someone.
AN ABSOLUTE RIOT😆🛞🏆🥇‼️
Shirley born in Schenectady NY and ran on the Fonda Speedway Dragstrip early on. Today Fonda is the home of DIRT great Stew Friesen...about a mile from my house.
Onward shirley!
And now in 2024, we're talking about going almost 100mph faster. 244.00 to be fair. 3000hp then..........11000hp now! Crazy!
I lived close to the Ontario Motor Speedway in 1976. I wasn't a huge fan of racing but still love a thrill so we went.... There was a group of news people waiting to go thru the tunnel that led to the inside of the track and starting line....about 4 of us blended in and made it! cha cha was amazing
The fastest lady on wheels, and absolutely gorgeous ❤❤
Not anymore
A great lady racer and quite a beautiful woman.
"it doesn't lie" a chrondek system at any track: hold my beer
Cha Cha is a great nickname!
Saw Cha Cha at the Detroit Dragway.
These cars are going almost 340 miles an hour, in 1000 feet. Almost 100 miles an hour faster then when she was talking about, in less than a quarter mile.
She's always been very cool and good looking
call her CHA CHA we love ya shirley.
Total Badass!
In drag racing a red light is a loss. Johnny actually lost on a red light.
Shirley Muldowney was great but didn’t belittle Danica Patrick😎
Shirley Muldowney is a woman who actually accomplished something in a male dominated sport unlike Danica Patrick.
@nicholaslayitan8374, Danica Patrick became the most successful female racecar driver in typical auto racing history. Guaranteed far better than you could ever do, PUTZ.
Where did you pull that statistic from ?@@sergeantmasson3669
Thank you!@@sergeantmasson3669
Fact
I miss interview shows that are respectful and slow paced, that let the person tell her story.
From Schenectady, New York, Cha Cha ( as she was known) had a Corvette and wiling to race anyone who pulled up alongside her at a traffic light.
She is a marvelous lady I'm still sad that the racing cost the end of their marriage.
Shirley was a good balance of seriousness and good humor. I think she has since made her peace with "Cha-Cha" but notice that Johnny knew who Cha-Cha was and recognized her. Johnny took her seriously and one could only expect that something goofy and entertaining would happen like the golf cart race.
Great driver! These days 260 mph means you have a flat tire! JK😎✌️
260 mph and now in 2024, they are in the 330's mph.
Friday February 21 1986
Eat your heart out Danica Patrick This is what a woman car driver's supposed to be like.
She must have hated walking with a cane. There's no cool way of walking witha cane !
Danica Patrick couldn't carry Shirley's
make - up kit
It would be interesting if she could give women in those middle eastern countries that are banned from driving, driving lessons. What would they think! 😎
Beautiful woman even though she was approaching old age by then.....
Race car drivers sure are dare devils!!!
Big Daddy signed her license to race.
Premature Acceleration.
Put delay cream in the supercharger. That oughta fix it!! 😏🏎️
But...did Johnny ever make it to Pomona to sit in the dragster and feel 3000 hp? The rest of the story
The mystery continues
She can handle 3000 ho but when it comes to electric,
I have never had an opportunity to meet her. I would like to someday. She's one of the best ever in Top Fuel Dragster.
I've seen Shirley in the gator Nationals in the 80 she was a snob to everybody I'd hate to be the man that married her
At Autorama years ago I told her it fun watching her walk that red "beer" car. The gallery cracked up when she called Kenny B. a putz.
She did it when it was a real quarter mile not this bullshit racing they do today. There are still a couple real tracks around like Bakersfield in California.
Johnny talks too much and many times talks over his guest. Never did like his show.
wow she sat in a car built by a man and stepped on the gas... big deal.
A lot of these men that are driving their cars, have a crew that do all of the work on the cars. Most drivers don't work on their own cars. So, she beat a lot of those guys.
Gee, how many runs do you have driving a Top Fuel Dragster? Uh, I will take a guess and say ZERO. She is a Legend!
Andrew Tate, is that you?
Troll
Shuddup troll! Show some damn respect
Saw her in Tulsa she and big Daddy took it up 😊
Cha Cha, you're a hero and thank god you survived that crazy carreer.
