The song sarcastically recounts the location of various army members, not to be found in the combat zone, and concludes by describing the location of the old battalion: "hanging on the old barbed wire". This troop song was not popular with the officer class, who thought it bad for morale, though attempts to suppress it were unsuccessful!!

So many of the songs from the great war seem to be sung in quite a jaunty and upbeat manner , yet contain a much darker undertone. One way of dealing with the absurdity of such a situation I guess. A gallows humour so to speak. You can just imagine a group of soldiers swinging their tin cups of watery tea as they sing this in the trenches in a bid to boost their morale. Quite heart breaking really.

sounds like the battalion tried to charge through some barbed wire but didn't make it, and the sergeant is drinking to forget about it

@@genuinepenguinproductions4547 Officers and higher ranking combatants, at least in the British military, were often with the men, as well as perfect targets for the enemy. I'm pretty sure about 70 British generals were killed in combat.
This songs about the age old disconnect between the men up top and the men in the line. This is still a thing to this day.

My Grandfather sang this to us in about 1960, he had served in WW1, and he had no desire to ever see another war. I am sorry Grandpa, war is still with us.

This really shed a tear to my eye. I could see a soldier singing this in his trench right before my eyes listening to this, making fun of the terrible, meaningless war he got encouraged to fight in.
It was a war that Europe did not want, the Kaiser had a different point of view. Millions died because of Germany’s aggression and it’s total disregard for the treaties it had signed.
@@bluedotmusic no dude that's WW2. WW1 was Germany protecting it's Ally Austria-Hungary from Russia and Serbia and then protecting it self from France and then Britain because it didn't want another empire to be just as powerful.

Britain protested the violation of Belgian neutrality, guaranteed by a treaty; The German Chancellor replied that the treaty is just ("a scrap of paper) Britain declared War on Germany on August 4th!! Both World Wars started due to German aggression and their dreams of a Greater German!!

I listen to these songs every once in a while and my wife hates them because she thinks I’m brooding and being a stick in the mud, but they bring me back to when I was an 18 year old that didn’t see that stuff like being 19 and having to walk in on my captain hanging from a ceiling fan…some stuff just changes you

My old Grandpa got a blighty from a German mortar at Mons. He never talked about his experiences but I'm sure this tune would have resonated around the trenches as he wished for home.

My great grandfather served in the American Expeditionary Force in the Great War. Hard not to lament an entire generation lost during “the war to end wars.”

I’m only 12 but I’m very into history and I just want to say thank you for this capella it brings back memories from my grandpa who stormed the beaches and his dad who was in the trenches

I just recently began researching my family tree. We all thought there was no ancestor who fought in the Great War as no-one ever talked about them and their were no photos of anyone in uniform on display in our elderly relatives homes. I've since uncovered 21 young men and boys across both my maternal and paternal lines. We are shocked! We had no idea! Neuve Chappel, Loos, Gallipoli,The Somme, The St Quentin Canal, Russian Civil War and 3rd Battle of Gaza are just some of the battles that we now have a personal contact with. Learning about these young men, most between 18-25 has been heart rendering but also fills me with pride. These were my Grandparents brothers, cousins and uncles. 21 boys from 4 families. One died 2 weeks after his 20th birthday and 2 weeks before the Armistice. Another won The Victoria Cross. It's unbelievable that they were never talked about. The trauma must have been so great to bear. I'm certain they were never forgotten but were buried deep in the hearts of those who loved them and any grieving and remembrance was done in private. I'm so glad I did decide to discover more about the people who came before me- some of them were sadly left "hanging on the old barbwire" such a tragic loss of so many fine lads.

A VC in your family, how proud you must be. In those times men never talked about the horror they had seen in the trenches and battlefields, the memories were almost to much to bear. They are part of the history of this terrible conflict, you must celebrate their courage, it was because of their bravery that we have the freedoms we enjoy today.

In ww2 one of my great uncles was a pre war regular,served on the North West frontier in 38/39. Then in France and Dunkirk in 1940,he got on two boats,one was bombed another broke down,but he made it back. He joined ,we are Scottish,Lord Lovetts Commandos ,landing with them at D Day.
By this time he was an NCO. After Germany surrendered he was given an offer,along with a good amount of others. It was this "the armed forces gives you a swift no frills commission and in return you put your name forward to go East to fight the Japanese" . He excepted,less than a week before his commission came through the bombs were dropped. His commission was yanked out from under him. He left the forces at the first opportunity saying "they obviously didn't want us scuffing up their nice mess halls",and he never attended any reunions even,he was just so bitter about it,till the day he died.
A country fit for heroes eh? I'm a military historian and the British forces done worse to some. Senior NCOs given commissions during the war swiftly found themselves surrounded and "encouraged" to leave the army. To be fair not all had those sort of experiences but many did.

I can understand his feelings that he felt he was used, but he was made from 'The Right Stuff' at a time when we needed men like him.

Yeah,we all are. It gets worse,at the 1941 battle of Heraklion on crete,I lost TWO great uncles. Fallschirmjager reports all testify to how the Scots fought toe to toe till the end. We don't know the exact details of one death but the other was a fairly noted event mentioned in a fair few historical accounts.
What happened was a machine gun was in the open unmanned and an officer ordered NINE men ,one after the other to fetch it. They were all killed in their turn,but not one of them refused what they must have known was a suicide order. We don't know which number my great uncle was,was he first,fourth or last. Needless to say the officer didn't have a try himself,I think he got into a bit of bother over it. Didn't bring the nine dead men back though.
My own grandad fought from Normandy till VE day,taking part in the liberation of Bergen Belsen along the way.
Another great uncle got lost but survived in the North African desert in 1942,when finally found he was broken mentally,what battle could not do isolation and the empty desert had. He was given an honourable discharge. I'm the 1960s he walked into his house and murdered his wife and his dog. He died in a secure hospital. He never got the help he needed,my gran always said he had mental health problems before being called up,the war just made them worse.
My grandad manged to be in all the wrong places throughout WW1, from an under-age laddie to a battlefield, promotion to Lieutenant - because it was the lieutenants who kept getting shot. Ironically that promotion came after his most serious wound, which came from standing up as Sergeant to lead a charge... But the war ended before he either got shot again nor had his battlefield promotion confirmed - so they swiftly kicked him back onto civvy street without the pay or pension he would have got as a junior officer. Funnily enough, he became an International Socialist....

I had an audio story as a child that told WW1 stories through acting, poem and song. They did a beautiful version of this that always stuck with me; a chorus of people begin the song laughing and singing jovially, but by the end the song slows and they mournfully sing the last verse in a whisper. I haven’t been able to find it since but I know it by heart.

Aye, this song is a result of British WW1 squaddies discovering that though the shambles of the trenches that their hitherto revered ruling classes had feet of clay, and that the gulf in understanding and communication between the officer classes and the ordinary men was almost unbridgeable; and that even if they cared, their ruling classes knew no way to end their nightmare. My granddad lied about his age and joined up... was in all the worst places throughout the war, but his worst wound was as as a sergeant, standing up to lead the men in a charge and being hit by a sniper. The effect on his world view was such he spent his convalescence leave campaigning in support of pardons for James Connelly and the leaders of the Easter Rising...

The saddest part about this is that officers (section leaders and company commanders, anyway) were actually the most likely of any unit to die, statistically speaking. Many of the men being spoken of had worse odds of surviving than the enlisted men.

Great songs, really upsets me, paints images in my head of what our men went through, while the Germans were in more comfier trenches. Lads loosing their lives for some lazy royalty who can't fight for themselves. Respect to our lads and all the German and Austrian lads who also fought us.

The Germans saved everyone , by refusing to fight and ending the war. My grandad manged to be in all the wrong places throughout WW1, survived a few wounds while writing poems and songs in this vein, none of which ever blame the Germans ...

This song is a result of WW1 squaddies discovering that though the shambles of the trenches that their hitherto revered ruling classes had feet of clay, and that the gulf in understanding and communication between the officer classes and the ordinary men was almost unbridgeable; and that even if they cared, their ruling classes knew no way to end their nightmare. The social (and political) landscape was changed long term by the men who survived four years in the trenches like my grandad, though each generation seems to learn the lesson a new way..

my great uncle served in the royal machine gun corps on the Western front he was involved in the final assault the Germans made against the English just before the 100 days to victory and he was captured
