  • We all know "that guest", you know, the bad theme park guest, the one that is embarrassing themselves and that you don't want to be associated with. How do you know what "that guest" is, and how can you avoid being one of them?
With bloopers and some not previously published clips from Disneyland at the end!
A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a #PhotoPass photographer at #WaltDisneyWorld and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and #trainrobber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at #SilverDollarCity. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lots of stories to tell. Here is some of them...
Not only did I work in theme parks for 10 years, I've visited a whole lot of them as well. Here's some stories of great visits, not so great visits, favorites, reviews, and much more.

One of my favorite afternoon rest places is in Liberty square, the little guest relations office that has a couple tables and air conditioning. (Pro tip, grab a funnel cake from sleepy hollow and hang here!) one day I listened to this guy absolutely scream at the cast member, holding him personally responsible for Space Mountain being down. “It’s my family’s last day! This is ********, can’t believe you would do this to me” etc, before he stormed off, muttering more curse words I won’t repeat. The cast member just looked....defeated. Like, ready to hang up his Disney smile. So I approached him and cracked a couple lame jokes. I was a pass holder at the time, and had so many special moments because of cast members, I just wanted to make his day slightly better if I could. I got him to laugh and I said “maybe that guy ran out of pixie dust!” And the cast member said “grumpy doesn’t carry pixie dust. Luckily I do!” And reached into his drawer and gave me two paper fast passes good for any ride and said “thanks for talking to me! Enjoy your day, and I’ll enjoy mine!”
I didn’t expect anything out of the interaction, but I was so happy to know I’d made enough of a difference for him to want to. My husband enjoyed riding space mountain twice when it came back up that evening. I didn’t ride it at the time, now it’s one of my favorite rides!

Even with training and proper footware a literal Disney Marathon can be VERY hard. My legs were killing me for about 2 days after my first full, and going up and down the monorail station ramps at Epcot was... NOT pleasant.
Far easier is a Run Disney half marathon, I've gone into 50k+ steps after several of those and had a grand time!

I worked in a very small amusement park. The "that kind of guest" we always got were the ones that argued with ride operators over height requirements. Our park consisted of mostly kiddie rides with a maximum height but a few rides had a minimum requirement. A typical conversation went something like...
Me: Oh, sorry buddy. You're too small to ride this right now. Maybe next year, or even at the end of the summer if you have a growth spurt.
Parent: Why can't my kid ride?
Me: Well, we have a minimum height requirement and he's just a bit too short.
Parent: He rode the bumper cars at Other Park!
Me: Well, those bumper cars are built to accommodate smaller riders.
Parent: I don't understand why he can't ride!
Me: We have a height restriction for safety purposes. If the car gets hit really hard with a smaller rider, they could smack their face into the safety bar and get seriously hurt.
Parent: But he rode the ones at Other Park!

What I would say to the third/fourth "But he rode the ones at Other Park!":

Great video and tips! My "don't be that guest" is the know-it-all parent who knows the workers job better than them, specifically the ones that argue that their kid is tall enough to ride a ride "I checked them at home! Your stick is wrong!!"

I used to be a ride operator and these guests were what made me want to go home and treat myself to carryout from Buffalo Wild Wings. These parents did a really great job in making me believe that I was the bad guy but I still stood my ground and told them no your kid can’t ride. I even had a manager say to one of these parents that I was a great operator before the parent ended up arguing with my manager about the rules. I honestly think the parents thought that I was telling them no just to be mean but what I was actually doing is trying to keep their child safe.

    • @SirWillow

I hated dealing with those when I worked at Rhino Rally. Especially when they tried to play the "I'll sign a waiver" bit. Great, so I actually care more about your child's safety and happiness than you do

    • @TheCountessAsuka
      @TheCountessAsuka 3 роки тому +6

@@SirWillow I've heard the "sign a waiver" far more times than I like to think about. With one parent I actually lost my cool and said that I cared more about their child than they did direct to them. Not my finest moment, but the other guests had my back and harassed them into leaving the attraction. On the plus side, it made that kid's day because he was terrified to ride and I made sure the kid knew that I would never let him get forced onto the attraction.

I worked at an extremely popular ice cream shop for a couple of seasons. The amount of kids I saw licking the freezer was enough to make me watch them constantly. Everyone comes there from the beach. Outdoor workers (landscape, farm, etc), mechanics of all sorts, and so on touch that cooler. They stood on and sat on the freezer and our counters too. Everyone touches them, we do and we get covered in syrups, sauces, and ice cream. We did our best to wipe them down but still, gross.

i worked at a miniature park in the Netherlands for a while and there where busloads of tourists everyday from all over the world. one of those guests came to me one day and asked where he was. so i told him uhm you're in Madurodam (the name of the park) then he said oh i thought this was the Netherlands(not that weird tho cause the park showcases the Netherlands in miniature but still) yes this country is called the Netherlands. he was soo confused. he had no idea where he was. he said he thought the country was called Amsterdam and that the park was called the Netherlands. never heard about a country called the Netherlands let alone the city of Scheveningen we where in. he asked a couple of times more but i gave up on it. like how? you book a trip, pay a huge amount of money for it. and you don't even know which country you're in? at least try to learn something about the places you visit. he was one of those guests.

The only shoes I can wear in the s summer are flip flops. True story. Almost 20 years ago the church we were part of did a mission to New Mexico to hold a Bible school on a Native American reservation. The first day we’re doing a prayer walk around the church and I slip and fall into a mud hole. As my husband likes to say, “The only mud hole in New Mexico, and you found it.” I had only had one pair of flip flops with me, and yup, you guessed it, they broke. We had to drive an hour to the closest town and buy another pair. There’s my husband handing me every pair that he sees in my size asking me, “What about these?” Probably after the 20th pair, I found a pair that felt okay. Not related to theme parks, but I thought you might enjoy a broken flip flops story. Oh, and this was after a week of doing Cub Scout camp the week before and staying up all nite to do laundry the nite before we left so that we’d have clean clothes for the trip and then driving for three days to get there. Looking back, now I’m wondering how I even functioned.

Don't be that guest who makes their little kid go a ride they aren't ready for. I was at Disney World and my friends and I were standing in line for Soarin. I saw this dad with a really little girl, think she was like 5 or 6. The girl was crying and clearly didn't want to get on the ride and her dad kept reassuring her it wasn't a roller coaster. A cast member came up to them and told the girl what happens on the ride, but the girl didn't trust her and kept crying. I'd feel sorry for the dad, but I got the feeling he created the problem.

Sadly I have a couple of family members the same way- because I'm not fully in lockstep with them the only conversation we could have was them haranguing me about what they believe and why I should fully agree. Had to cut it off for my own mental health.
@djm I agree that a variety of views is a good thing. To many don't right now and they make it intolerable for those that differ. Hopefully we can work on it together and get over what has happened the last few years with politics, religion, covid and vaccines. :-(

When my knees act up it's rest time! Stop to eat, try out close by flat rides, find something close to occupy your time. If my knees go really bad I might at the worst ask an employee to help me get somewhere indoors, and just rest for 15-30 minutes, but I've only ever had to do it once and it felt like my knee was going to give out if I didn't.
I dunno, even asking for that assistance that one time made me feel like "that guest" since I threw off some people's schedule just to get me into an Air Conditioned building.

We were waiting in line for Small World once. The people in front of us had their small daughter in his shoulders. Well, luckily my husband was paying attention, because the little girl started falling backwards. He caught her. However, the parents started yelling at him. I look at them and said You're lucky he caught her otherwise she'd be on her way to the hospital.

Notice the direction everyone is traveling and go the opposite way. Disney normally is right, so I go left. You do more that way and lines are shorter, especially the rides close to the entrance of the park, sometimes nonexistent.

What I don't get are the park guests who don't even try to wear something nice to the park. You got enough money to pay hundreds of dollars, if not thousands of dollars, to come here and you don't have any money for a decent set of clothes? Really??? Men in wife-beater t-shirts (some with even holes and old sweat stains), young women wearing pajamas and wearing bedroom slippers, T-shirts with low-brow humor, baseball caps with offensive language/symbols on them, parents who let their toddlers walk around in just a diaper, etc.

Hey Mr Sir Willow guy man, just a thought I wanted to throw your way - you're SUPER into theme parks. Have you ever thought about trying to put together a DFBGuide-style channel where you talk about great ways to experience disney world, but extend it to other theme parks as well, like silver dollar city? I think with your vast fountain of knowledge, you'd be able to put something interesting together.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  3 роки тому +1

I could. Except that theme parks are my hobby, and I don't' really have an interest in turning it into a full time job. I have other things that I do that, for me at least, are a higher priority that I don't want to give up, which if I did something like DFB I would have to.

But Sir, if youre brain curciuts has burned due to super long days in the parks and youre trying to find out where Lanchbay is on the map or did not realise that a characters full name is written above him or stuff like that, what do you do? I even tried to use a FP for Flight of passage without realizibg it was the entreance for Rivers of Light.
Sometimes vrains just shut down when they are overloaded after a long day in the park it can even be so long gone that you did not relize that what you think is the exit door actually is a staff only door until the staff told you.
So yes. Tired brain can go numb on the best people. Johan.

it gets asked all the time. And contrary to the attempt to excuse it, they seriously are asking what time the "Three O'Clock Parade" is. It's amazing how many guests think that is the name of the parade. They aren't asking how long til the parade, or when the parade gets to where they are, they are asking what time that parade starts.

When me, my family and my friend went to sea world in Orlando. Both me and my friend Colton Swayze were both 14 at the time. oh your going to gasp in shock when you hear this. We used to be rebels basically. we used to hop the fences in the cue areas if there were no lines and almost all the ride operators were ethier on there phone or they just didn't care. i can't do it now thanks to hip problems do to complications of scoliosis. And here's whats crazy i use to walk around barefoot at the parks while my friend Colton Swayze walked around shirtless. Essentially we were both bad boys or rebels or punks if you think about it. i use to be able to sit on top of the trash cans but I cleaned it with napkins I use carry around. We knew not to hop safety fences which was good thankfully. But when it came to walking around the park it was like a parkour video to us being made as for my friend Colton Swayze he was on the school track team very fit for his age. As for me I looked like a teddy bear that wasn't that fat looking. And even though I was kinda chunky or chubby I could still move like there was no tomorrow. And what's crazy is I could keep up with him. except my dad, mom and sister they couldn't keep up at all. there were times where they said slow down please. But we ran to most of the rides and by the end of the day we were worn out. I was worn out the most and what was awesome is when we went back to the car. Colton Swayze would carry me on his back because he was obsessed with being fit to be quite honest all the way back to the car. But when it came to Disney ooooooooooooooof. We ran to all the rides but hoping fences in the cue areas was rare because the lines were packed. But when it came to cast members I had one go hey you might not want to do please go around like a normal person ok. I laughed and said normal define normal. To me and my friend normal was boring 😴 like sleeping boring. So when we got on splash mountain just like that i changed my shoes to water and my friend shirtless. Gosh now that I think about it at my current age of 19. I call it the crazy part of my life but yeah rebellion as well. Ultimately I can't do it anymore without pains in my upper, lower back hip pains and I stopped at the age of 16. And my friend Colton Swayze well he unfortunately moved to a different state. But when I look back it was interesting at best.

Only stupid thing I ever remember doing myself a Disney world was sitting on the metal rope chains they have in lines which is something I usually did in long lines until one time I was in line for soarin and sat on a magnetic one and fell I was ok but very embarrassed because a cast member saw the whole thing however he was very nice and asked if I was ok and if I needed first aid however in the end all I needed was a big band aid which I could get without leaving the line 😂😒😖

And if you don't understand that when Disney says you have to wear a mask, then you have to wear one and refusing to wear it or throwing a fit over it is inappropriate... well, sorry. Welcome to the world of theme parks in 2021. If the cast members are having to yell at you, then maybe the problem isn't with the cast members.
