Nice table! Our little Odo lives in a large cupboard we converted into his home. He's only ever in there if we are out of the house though. We made his substrate deep so he can dig but he never seems fussed with digging. Loves climbing though!
I think I might come back as your tortoise! You most certainly have a passion for looking after him. Great ideas as I'm about to build my own enclosure for my son's soon-to-be new tortie. Re the weeds you are trying to grow, have you considered growing them in a seed tray and then digging the tray in when they're reached maturity, having extras on the go so you have an ever-ready supply of fresh weeds. When your tortoise has gobbled up the first batch, you can simply remove that tray and replace with a new one with freshly matured weeds. Really appreciate your post, it's brilliant and very inspiring.
WOW. Nice table. Though, I would recommend using Timothy hay in their sleeping compartment. It's great because they gnaw their beeks while they're sleeping! Your tort is really cool aswell.
Cool enclosure...about the glass tank you are right about that..but I think it's fine for a baby tortoise as long as you put a little tiny mini fan at the top for air flow.
@Adam Benton Hi, You gave the measurements for the length and depth of the tortoise table, but I didn’t hear you mention the height of the side panels. Hope to hear from you soon. Many thanks.
So dedicated Adam, and you gave such helpful advice. This video is a few years old - I wonder how things look now because most projects are ongoing and change with time. Pity the garden enclosure vlog didn't happen, I would really like to have seen it. What happens in a power failure - can you get a backup system?
@Lolherx Yes that is true. I have a small drinks fridge so in a few years I can put him in a box in the fridge at 5 degrees for the winter months to hibernate.
Very informative thank you. I am thinking or getting a horsfield. I want to convert a huge coffee table into a tortoise table. It will live in my bedroom with my tropical plants. The room is a constant 23° so will I need a heater? I thought tortoises Hybernated in the winter?
Hi Adam, I have a fixing like yours on my tortoise table for the uv light stip did you put anything between the striplight and the wood as I'm new to tortoises I'm not sure if I should use any heat protection between the tube and the wood can you help
thankyou mate im living over in northern ireland am going to get one but im researching my a$$ off lol just being so cautious going to get the best uvb light i can get get spur bulbs a big hut for the tortoise a good thermo just want everything to be perfect for the little guys forever home if anyome has any advice id really appriciate it 😀
do you have to separate the section or could you buy a basic started table and have a heat lamp at one end of the enclosure. would one link in this link be okay not sure about the glass at the front but it is covered.
I do understand you point about them being in a glass viv but all reptile shops and the vets I've spoken to said it is fine while there babies. Great video though
Just a quick question when I get my tortoise, when I roams around the house can I Tie a balloon to it so we don't step on it or is that not a good idea
you can put them in a terrarium as long as you paint or cover the bottom half of the glass so that they see that they cant keep walking that way. I have all of mine in tarrariums and they are fine. they have never put their face on the glass and tried to walk through it,
Good tips but I have one and I have a glass viv for mine with a slider top and mine is fine but she got used to it as at first she was scared but she is fine now
£600....... i spent around £250 and have a bigger table and a very happy/active tort with far less stress/cost.. i give my tort pellets and he never eats them all and jumps on the greens when hes up for a good munch!!
Vv are good if you have a small part open also if you get them out every day they are fine... Mine is in one and he likes hit I tried him with a table and he didn't like it I get him out every day in my living room and sometimes in my garden in the summer he loves it
hi i just wanted to know how you inserted the UV tube fittings as i am building another tortoise table as my horsefield just passed away. ;) please reply aha
Sorry for the slow reply I've only just got my account password back. Back a 'U' shaped frame out of 3 wood pieces as per video. Place a long mirrored reflective backing screwed up into the 'U' then slot the UV tube in. Make two holes with a drill at one end to pass through the power cables and that is it!
hiya its a lovely setup nout wrong with it but i wouldnt have a heatlamp in the (bedroom) as a horsefield in the wild would natrually go cold of a night wouldnt have the sun on him in his bed if you get what i mean but apart from that lovely setup :)
no you mix sand and topsoil together sometimes it's quite dump equal amounts might have to leave the lights on to dry it out a little bit, depending on which tortoise you have a fine misting in the morning keeps the soil moist 👍
I just give it a light misting in the morning I have leopards tortoises, and i soak their moss squeeze it out and put it under their hide which keeps it humid for them 👍
Why do we use lights for them nowadays? Is it because years ago we was treating them wrong? As these use to just live in gardens when I was a kid , everyone had them back then
Hi, I'm looking for a tortoise as a pet. I have found a website that I can buy them off of and it says a horse field is good for starter breeders but I just want one as a pet, would this make a difference? Another thing is that I've been told they might not wake up from hibernation, is this something that regularly happens? If there is an experienced tortoise carer please answer my questions :) Thank you!
With all the stuff now a days you don't need to put them away as when there Hibernating they will wake up and look for a drink and food and if you haven't left that they will starve or dehydrate
Dan's Gear Jams Unfortunately tortoise don't like there skin being touched so if I do try to touch his leg or head he will put it inside his shell quickly before I can really even touch him. I do occasionally stroke his shell but I'm not really sure if he can feel it, if he can he doesn't seem to mind!
They sleep a whole seasonwhichis winter to get ready for spring a nd summer they dont even get up for food which is ok because I had my tortose for 2 years he is that russian one
Beautiful table. That red bulb needs to go. As well as the subtrate. Top soil with peat moss is the best for any subtrate. The red light will hurt their eyes, as well as disrupt their sleep pattern.
xMichaelDuncanx, I belive you can order tortoises for delivery online at thetortoisecentre.co.uk. They delivery to mainland uk and a few places overseas.
Excellent! Glass enclosed is not good, for all the reasons you gave. Nature allows them(like us!!!!doh!) to move away from and back towards an area of heat or cool. A pet store vivarium is not suitable. Too humid for a tortoise, and does not allow micro climates.
Nice habitat Adam, I think your tortoise lives better than most people do.
Great video bud, I have been doing research for a while now, and this is one of the most informative videos I have seen so far...good job!
PLEASE POST MORE
Super informative I’d love you to make more vids like this
Well done, this helped in planning for my own tortoise table. I like the two open ends and the hide as you have done it. Glad I clicked on this.
Nice table! Our little Odo lives in a large cupboard we converted into his home. He's only ever in there if we are out of the house though. We made his substrate deep so he can dig but he never seems fussed with digging. Loves climbing though!
Where did you get your fake plants? We've been wanting to get some for our guy but not found any decent ones in the local reptile shops.
I love the name!
Fab enclosure!! I'm building my Hermann's a bigger table soon and this have given me loads of ideas, thanks for sharing :)
Brilliant video .my daughter has one of there tortoise and her dad has done very little to what u said it need .I'll share your video with him
This video has really helped me out and gave me some ideas for my tortoises, thank you! :)

Thanks man very useful because I got a horsfielf aswel he's 1 year old and in getting a tortoise table tomorrow
What a nice tortoise table you’ve built! I love the design and would love the spec.s!

It was soo funnels that when u we're talking the tortoise tried to eat the wood and he/she let go and he/she want flying aww it was soo cute
great vid dude very informative
Thank you so much for the advice
Great and very useful video but where is the outdoor setup one? Would love to see how you got in with it.
The best ttable and vid!
You are very helpful ! My tortoise is also called Tommy :D
@Adam Benton Hi, You gave the measurements for the length and depth of the tortoise table, but I didn’t hear you mention the height of the side panels. Hope to hear from you soon. Many thanks.
very nice A + enclosure💚🐢

so see and great and i like it so munch
i had problems with my glass pen for my tortoise and its 1 1/2 by 3 and i taped card baord to the outside and he stopped and lived life pretty good
Awesome job! Do you by any chance have the dimensions of all the pieces?

Nice work
Can you please tell me the lights, thermometers e.c.t as I have got a tortoise but I am building a new enclosure
Thanks for sharing this. How high are your side walls? I’m concerned to get the heat/ lighting at the correct height.
I was wondering where you got all your equipment from?
Hi Adam, I have a fixing like yours on my tortoise table for the uv light stip did you put anything between the striplight and the wood as I'm new to tortoises I'm not sure if I should use any heat protection between the tube and the wood can you help

Looks great you should get him a companion
Has anyone compiled the specs / materials required to construct this? All of these years later, Adam, any modifications that you'd recommend? Thanks!
I do understand you point about them being in a glass viv but all reptile shops and the vets I've spoken to said it is fine while there babies. Great video though
It is a myth that every tortoise cannot do well with glass. Do what you think is right.
you are sogreat
Yes
what lights are you using with your table
can the tortoise live in a small garden ? must it only live in the home you have created any info would be much appreciated
Just a quick question when I get my tortoise, when I roams around the house can I Tie a balloon to it so we don't step on it or is that not a good idea
what is the little white stuff in the bedding at 10.52 on video
you can put them in a terrarium as long as you paint or cover the bottom half of the glass so that they see that they cant keep walking that way. I have all of mine in tarrariums and they are fine. they have never put their face on the glass and tried to walk through it,
Its more for the respiratory problems they cause long term
It gets way to warm in terrariums
No you cannot. Those are fine for babies to control temps and humidity. Torts need space to roam. 8x4 is the minimum for any tortoise table indoors.
It's between you, your tortoise, and your vet. Not random strangers.
Kitty Purry It is called Limestone chalk. I brought online from Norfolk Tortoise Club (United Kingdom)
Good tips but I have one and I have a glass viv for mine with a slider top and mine is fine but she got used to it as at first she was scared but she is fine now
It depends on the tortoise. You're absolutely right!
Are tortoises fond of affection? If so, what do they like? Head stroking etc?
£600....... i spent around £250 and have a bigger table and a very happy/active tort with far less stress/cost.. i give my tort pellets and he never eats them all and jumps on the greens when hes up for a good munch!!

You don't have to justify yourself to these strangers. It is between you, the tortoise, and their vet.

Is the uv tube connected to a separate thermostat?
Sorry for your loss.
Great advice, but not many people can fit one of those tables in their home.
If you don’t have the space for and animal, then you shouldn’t have it, it’s cruel
You do not know their whole story.
hiya its a lovely setup nout wrong with it but i wouldnt have a heatlamp in the (bedroom) as a horsefield in the wild would natrually go cold of a night wouldnt have the sun on him in his bed if you get what i mean but apart from that lovely setup :)
Hi, do you use any special type of topsoil, or just that you'd get from the garden centre?
it's a organic topsoil without any additives mixed with play sand 👍
@@yummyofjune do you dampen it and if so, how often?
no you mix sand and topsoil together sometimes it's quite dump equal amounts might have to leave the lights on to dry it out a little bit, depending on which tortoise you have a fine misting in the morning keeps the soil moist 👍

The sun is not inside their house. Also winter. Also cars and trucks. No thanks.

Try the tortoise shop.com they look good
***** Cheers
Mines been in a glass tub for a year and it's fine is it just there different personalities that causes distress
With all the stuff now a days you don't need to put them away as when there Hibernating they will wake up and look for a drink and food and if you haven't left that they will starve or dehydrate
Is it okay for it to live in normal soil? Please help
Its fine if that soil is purely organic
I'm pretty sure they live for 75 years, or more.
What is quoowcube
I got two tortoises from Christmas they are only less than one
Uh ??
Dan's Gear Jams Unfortunately tortoise don't like there skin being touched so if I do try to touch his leg or head he will put it inside his shell quickly before I can really even touch him. I know turtles can so maybe :)
won't they try to eat the plants?
whats about hibernation?
They sleep a whole seasonwhichis winter to get ready for spring a nd summer they dont even get up for food which is ok because I had my tortose for 2 years he is that russian one
How much did ure tortoise cost you to buy
Did you ever get a Tortoise?
The Outdoor Ways He cost me £120 from Cambridge Reptiles (United Kingdom)

What are your credentials? Did OP ask for advice?
@@kikitcat5 there is always a clown in the comments. Perhaps 25yrs of keeping reptiles dummy

xMichaelDuncanx,
I belive you can order tortoises for delivery online at thetortoisecentre.co.uk.

What is it eating
cuttlefish
is that Russian tortoise?
I wish they would just sell enclosures...
75+
do you hybernate you tortoise
No that can kill them
yo ucan hibernate tortoise its even healthy, you just need to learn how, my tortoise goes into hibernation on his own and wakes up few months later
It's between you and your vet. Don't let people pressure you.
the small pet shop is so much better
But my tortoise eats the sand and that looks like a dream land for tortoises
Tortoises are cute but bites hard : )

bit big mate
Nope, they need a shit ton of space
All he needs now is a a mate
Nope. They’re solitary animals.
What the hell is a horse field tortoise
russian tortoise
