Cars are subjective, but at a certain point are either legends are disappear into history. Fast cars, slow cars, cars with a great story - you name it. Today I asked the question what your most underrated sports cars were - and man did it get deep. Everything from the Toyota Celica, Nissan 300zx, and so much more. You guys had some great answers, so let's talk about it.

The creator of Initial D was asked why they had a 3000gt in the show but it was never shown racing the Trueno.
Their answer: if there is one car that you can't suspend disbelief on to imagine it being beaten by the 86, it was the Mitsubishi GTO.
I love my 92 GTO TT AWD.

The Acura CL Type S, specifically the 03 model that came in manual 6 speed. Great looking car, lsd manual transmission, around 285hp J32a v6 vtec motor, (one of the best j series made given head flow). And they only make around 3800 of them maybe a little less. Amazing car and speaking from experience. Surprised also David hasn’t reviewed one yet since he did a 3rd gen TL. Definitely highly underrated and one of the more rare car Honda has produced.

This 100%!! I Had a blue 2002 TL Type-S with the same engine, just automatic, and I still miss that car to this day! The engine never failed me, was insanely comfortable, and that v6+vtec power was just too good. Best car I ever bought for less than $3K. I feel like they’re really slept on because they’re a little strange looking on the outside and the automatic transmissions are notorious for failure, but I love the look of both the CL and TL of that generation. The CL had a better front end, but I personally liked the booty on the TL better, kinda reminded me of a Toyota Chaser. Just wish they made the TL’s of that year in manual!

I've got an RX8 and it's great, always broken tho. I like to think of it as more of a RX2/3/4 or even a Cosmo follow up - or even just it's own thing, rather than a RX7 successor. It's such a different car to an FD, I mean it's a 4 door to start with.
Also the renesis is better on mpg, co2, and actually makes more power than any naturally aspirated RX7. It's a miracle they could still make a rotary viable with the emissions restrictions.
I still love RX7s tho, but the 8 is it's own thing. Thankyou for listening to my TED talk.

Man you ain’t lying, the one to have tho is an rx8 R3 (usdm spirit R). Mazda went absolutely crazy with the suspension and the 3rd oil injector to finally nullify apex seal failure chef’s kiss. I dominated togue style racing and effortless time of the day’s for autocross. Had the Miata kids highly upset when they heard me pull up. Up in Tennessee I was only beaten by a maximum effort viper. Absolutely insane entry speeds and mid corner speed that car really held like a spider stuck on glue. I miss that car everyday but an FD is my ultimate dream

The Honda Accord coupe. I think for a long time before it was discontinued it was one of the few fun cars that Honda still offered. You could get it with a near 300hp j series v6, a 6 speed manual, strut bars and a pretty rigid suspension system on the later models, and of course vtec . Pretty great platform and i consider it a spiritual successor to the prelude. And as a plus it has a sun roof and a nice leather interior and sound system.

Not best underrated of all time but I owned a 2014 Scion Tc. Black with the rear spoiler option which I see many of them don’t have for some reason. Car was an absolute blast and was bullet proof. I used to jump it, push corners hard as all hell, and just drive it hard because I trusted it and knew it’s handling could throw whatever I threw at it. With some Blizzaks on in the winter it did just fine and never got me stuck which was crazy. Got stuck in a flash flood once and hydro locked the engine at around 74k miles and was able to get a replacement with 69k on it and that’s all it needed and ran perfectly until I sold it for my A4. Wish I had the manual transmission in mine which would’ve made it amazing. But for a Hs kid the car was a dream, sporty looking coupe, good speaker system, touchscreen center display, flat bottom steering wheel sounds alright for a 4 cyl.

@@littlebucks912 you can make about 200hp crank out of a 2.5l with basic bolt-ons like full exhaust, intake, TB, ect. In that with a 5 speed, it was pretty quick for the time. Gotta think, it's a small car with a small motor. Wasn't much slower than the Mustang at the time. And GM's pushrod 3.8 would only make a somewhat 40 more HP 10 years later. They were alright. Alot of people do a JDM KLZE swap. Which will net you about 15 - 20 extra on everything depending on what you do and are a bit more reliable

They were taking 4 Wheel Steering in the early 1990’s, fully adjustable racing bucket seats, modern digi dash in the 3rd gen, upgraded VTEC in the H22a Type S for example. Plus the suspension across the entire line was incredible. Smooth and snappy with a fair amount of rear oversteer. High revving engines, all fun without needing v8 or turbo to enjoy some spirited driving or heading to your fist job out of college. Damn now I miss the prelude.

Speaking of the tiburon you have to do it correctly for it to be fast . People don't know it but the stock motors alone can make way more power than people expect. I know a guy that has one on stock motor precision 5858 and a megasquirt ms1 on e85 and he ran a 10 sec on his several 10 second passes constantly on stock 2.0l and then did the same stock 1.8 best past was a 10.6 on the stock 1.8l . They are slept on cars just because the support isnt there in the us so you have to make stuff work but they can be fun cars. There's some crazy story's and videos from Korea of them things going against gtr's and other crazy cars street racing in the early 2000s. By as early as 2003 they where already in the 600whp to 700whp range with the tiburon motors.

I’d have to disagree regarding the 2003 and newer Tiburons. I bought a 2003 GTV6 with the 6 speed manual brand new when it came out. I installed an intake, headers, catback initially with some solid results. When a shop out of Florida called Next Generation Motorsports took interest into the platform, however, that’s when things got awesome. I bought an upper and lower intake manifold from them and that made a HUGE difference. My final build was a roots blower setup I bought from them too. I dyno’d it at 270whp after a tune. IMO, it was an EXTREMELY underrated platform, and they car was a ton of fun when built right.

One of my biggest surprises came from a 90s Celia. It had the vvt GT motor & 5-speed. First 4-cylinder to glue me to my seat. That was before I knew the potential of a 4-cylinder. I've even been in a turbo 1jz G3 Supra before and it wasn't that much difference. Made me want a Celica for years after that ride. Might have been the passenger seat optical illusion. I remember all my car feeling way faster when someone else drove them.

Lol I wish people talked about the Solstice GXP/Sky Redline more. Everyone just lumps them in with the 2.4 base models and write them off as slow GM garbage but the 2.0 turbo ones are definitely worth talking about. It would be cool to see David review a GXP/Redline because that one review of that base model really put them in a bad light. Everyone also likes to jump on the interior quality even though it's still a whole lot better than a lot of Japanese shitboxes. All in all, I think you should give these Kappas another chance with a turbo model with some bolt ons. I got a full bolt on (besides the turbo) GXP if you're ever around South Florida.

This is for underrated cars (not necessarily cars that get “hate” per se):
C5-C7 corvettes. Many people used to look at them as boomer garage queens but finally have wised up to the fact that there is no car that gives you more performance per dollar on the market. They’re not slept on like they used to be but I’d still argue they’re underrated. They’re such sick cars that are really affordable and have a robust aftermarket. Also ridiculously reliable. You can build a corvette for literally any purpose: drag racing, twisty mountain road car, or even drifting. It’s an easy platform to make huge power on, and despite all the hate for a leaf spring suspension, they’re killer in the mountain roads. I think people are starting to realize this because the c5 and c6 have become really popular drift cars in the last few years. But when I was growing up, they were looked at as simply an overrated midlife crisis car.
Also Gen 3 vipers (yes yes I know, I’m basically plugging my own cars). Gen 3 was the most common generation for the viper and a lot of people don’t like verts (which was the only way you could buy them from 03-05). You can pick up a great condition gen 3 for right around 40k. That’s a lot of car for 40k. Yes, the ACR has always had mad respect, but a regular Gen 3 vert is something a lot of people will thumb their nose at because they’re under the illusion that it’s a “base model” that shares little in common with its track-focused counterpart. The reality is that it actually has the same chassis as every other gen 3-5 viper. With a simple coilover swap and some better brakes, it’s an absolute animal of a car.
The amount of performance per dollar in both of these platforms is why I own them both. Lot of other good stuff mentioned in the comments here. These are just 2 platforms I have experience with and got into explicitly because of affordability :)
