    CARLOS- As a young teen looking to get started in weightlifting/bodybuilding I remember seeing the Weider version for sale in the sports section of a department store back in around 1981 or 1982!!! I bought an EZ-Curl bar with my Christmas money and still use it today!!

    Another fascinating history lesson from Golden era bookworm..I had a chest expander when I was a young teenager (This was in the eighties), always pinched the one chest hair a had 😂. Seriously though, for recovery from injury they are worth a investment. Great video.💪👏

    When I was a kid I remember Jack Lalane on TV doing Chest expanders, push ups, situps. I don't know how much barbell work Jack done but his physic proved that steroids were not needed to get jacked. Great old school video once again, Thanks !

    I’ve owned a few chest expanders and bull workers. Now I own 2 cheese expanders that I use frequently. One is somewhat easy, using rubber tubing strands and the other is a 5 spring that goes up to very high resistance with all 5 in there. My activities are mostly bouldering and running, and I don’t like commercial gyms anymore. So for upper body, chest expanders are a great tool to combine with all the calisthenics. I also do 500-800 burpees in an average week.

    I have official British Strandpulling Association Expander I ordered to US from I believe mans name was Jim Bartlett. Its very heavy duty, but very awkward to change springs. I been using it on and off for almost 25 years

    Great video. What is your opinion of the 1960s British ones by Spenby, Terry’s and Mitre? They seem to be well regarded. Do you think they hold up well to the Baraban one?

    • @GoldenEraBookworm
      @GoldenEraBookworm  3 місяці тому

      no, simply because they are too old, and they were never made as strong as Baraban's are. There max resistance was around 50 k, Baraban's regular expander goes up to a minimum of 70k

    Gen X’r here. I remember some of those old expanders lying around the basement of my grandparents and in gyms. As a kid i just remember what it felt like fucking about with them and pinching the shit out of my skin. Those things were brutal in the hands of an untrained kid.

    Are rubber chest expanders still enough?Because i am 17 I cannot get a Spring chest expander(Robert Baraban chest expander is too expensive).
    Is there any posibility to make your own metal chest expander with little money assuming you have handles(my dad has a cheap spring chest expander,the handles are really good but springs are really low quality because after certain uses the springs lenghten and don't return to their initial position )?
    There must be some places or sites where you can find high quality springs since its no big philosophy.
    I want to use then mostly for back(i have adjustable dumbbells at home but exercises like pullover or rows feel very akward to me,and i don't want to strain my back considering i have mild scoliosis).
