This process has been around since the late 80's,,,~ The one exception. i used a Nova Chuck with the Jaws removed to hold the pen blank...

It’s almost certainly been around for well before that even.

niceeee! question..... whyy would you only use the brad point bit for resin and not wood when the brad point bit is a wood drill brill?

“I prefer twist or Brad point for wood/resin”, I probably wasn’t clear, I will use either, with some of the drill sizes it’s very difficult to get a brad point bit. So for a wood blank,
I tend to sharpen the twist drill points back to a sharper angle which helps penetration of the bit (see last weeks sharpening a twist bit video)

Awesome - please consider doing one for drilling on a drill press too, could do with a few pointers! :)

I like the turn by hand suggestion. Makes a lot of sense.

Interesting! Most pen makers I see on UA-cam seem to drill on the drillpress. I was wondering: Why not use the lathe the way pipemakers do?

I think many pen makers, set up a pillar drill and batch out loas of blanks in one go - for that the pilar drill is quicker, but its not as accurate unless your clamping everything down 100% each time, AND the drill is good.... the lathe is the more accurate for this task by far.

One reason is the cost of a self-centering chuck. A decent drill press, even a bench top model, costs less than a good chuck, and most pen turners already have the press. So, why spend more (a relative lot more) on a limited duty tool? Just my 2 pence worth.

People that have nice equipment don't need this video.

People that think they need nice equipment, don’t need to sound like they think they’re better than everyone else either.
