"I made my way to that corner, getting as close as I can. I remember conversing with a few people around me to get a feel for what and why people were here, but their stories came out in a blur. I was locked, completely focused. All I wanted was the night: the musicians and the songs..."

“Emma is not a person. Emma is a place you get stuck in. Emma is a pain that you cannot erase.”
-Justin Vernon
Maria Cardoso it better be
So true so true!
i will never get over this man.
man I tell ya that fuckin alternate tuning shit is a whole game changer in and of it's self, but when you throw them crazy vocal harmonies around like that...that's fucking pure gold. magic baby. I feel it.
I am not even frustrated anymore, that these beautiful sounds do not get heard in the mainstream, it is too beautiful to be distorted, keep it in the indie. and share the beauty
oh boy do I have some news for you...
think its meant to be like a release of emotions, just go mental. that doesn't make it anti-music, just an emotion expressed through the rhythm. this is fucking amazing
I was there! Best moment of the entire weekend. I think it's amazing that so many people can be so connected with a piece of music at the same time. Was magical.
It was the perfect music for the ending credits in the movie "The Place Beyond the Pines". If you haven't seen it you're missing out big time.
Im here cause i just finish the movie, beautiful movie 🙂
Say less
I agree
the guy doing the backing vocals has a nice voice as well. they sound great together
I can't believe this was 12 years ago. I was 12 at the time. It would be 3 years until I discovered bon iver, and still listening to this day. These recordings are on par with the Sydney Opera House. Both amazing in their own ways but I have to say these are so raw and personal.
You are ahead of the game, my friend.
This has to be my favorite performance of this song yet, hands down, beautiful.
i hope this never loses it's beauty
YES. I WILL MARRY THIS SOUND.
J.V.'s voice produces in me such a guttoral, visceral, f'ing whoa shit response that I haven't felt in so long that no compliment I could come up with can even do JUSTICE to to it (his voice)! BTW Kate, I listened to your cover like a week ago & I think it's safe to say that the beauty and simplicity of your voice has more than a couple of us feeling that we'll never get over YOU girl... your voice is like a seraphim's! Nice chops girl, nice chops.
i still get the chills.....
I always need a hug right after I listen to this song. heh. Delightfully melancholic, that's what it is.
i was there!! best show ever!!!
I.. I can't. This song gets me pretty much every single time
Still one of the best from Bon Iver
Must of been a magical gig.
I love that wavering quality to the guitar
this is the song that puts me to sleeep, every night.
first time I had ever heard the song or the band, and it was so fucking beautiful. through the magic of collective consciousness I knew every word. I was blown away.
Stunning performance, [BI] a phenomenal talent.............
I think the rawness of the opening on the studio version is lost here, and personally that's what makes this song so great, his voice is laid bare, and the music is as well. Not that this is a bad version, I would just prefer to see it completely bare, with just an acoustic.
im going to see bon iver live next month :) this is my favorite song
sounds so perfect.
Pure genius.
amazing footage
Its beautiful. That's pure goodness.
I love this.
I finally get to see them at Bonnaroo in less than 2 weeks. If you're there, come find me. I'll be the guy rolling around the ground crying my eyes out.
incredible!
amazing!
Luca Starita you said it PERFECT 2 years ago!!
@doublecuppinfiend it's sean carey, his drummer :) sean has a solo album out now under the name s. carey called "all we grow"
love this
i love it
@elmobrother Dude... seriously! Best comment ever
Oh man! I'm in this video too! I'm one of the twins that the camera decided to zoom into. Damn! If I had known I was being filmed I would have put on some make up.
This is pure fucking beauty
One of the beauties of something like this is I do not need validation from you, because I was there, and because if you have not shared the experience, I can only pity you for not believing me. I have no reason to lie to complete strangers on the internet. I don't understand it, nor did I previously believe in that sort of thing, being a skeptic myself. I have no animosity towards you for not believing me, though. It's a foolish thing to read and instantly believe without seeing for yourself.
if no one has ripped this yet... someone should get on that
I was talking to a friend while playing this video. After a few seconds of this song I couldn't say a word anymore.
the camera work reminds me of how theyd camera work from live vids from the 60s
God they were tight man
im 14 every one at my school listens to 'pop' this music is good all good music is about willingness to listen for meaning and not just the superficial.
Oh my god, I'm in this! Weird!!
@mrbillymorris12 I like the fact that this kind of music is not so famous as lady gaga and rihanna. It's like you have the illusion that is only for you, that is something that belongs to you. And it's simply beautiful that only few people can feel the same empathy listening to this music. It' s a privilege this, that doesn't belong to everyone.
I don't know if I'm clear, I'm not English...and I'm sorry for my mistakes. :P
March 23rd, 2008 at the Independent.
WOAH.
hahaha i'm in this video 8-)
i've unfortunately been stuck in emma before and I cannot erase it i promise you.
@elmobrother OMG I thought the exact same thing!!!!
The music is fantastic quality, the audience is great, but why is the camera only zooming in on julian? it feels really claustrophobic and myopic after a while.
@elmobrother hahAHHA yes! exactly what i was thinking. he's playing guitar too.
If you listen to the recording of this song you hear near the end the drums play rhythmically out of tune. Kind of like a popping sound that's everywhere like popcorn. That's what they're trying to recreate here only it's more obvious because its louder love than it is on the track. It's intentional
@Dannefan84 its intentional im fairly sure they love fecking about with off beat rthymns :D
I can understand it seems one-sided of the cameraperson but really, Justin was the original Bon Iver. For Emma was all him, in fact, being solitary was the main theme of the album. After some solo performing he got Mike and Sean for a sort of on-the-road band, they ended up sticking.
When did this show take place?
@mrbillymorris12 Not being popular doesn't make him underrated. He got a ten on pitchfork, I don't think that would be considered underrated.
I was just trying to share a positive experience with fellow fans. No need to be a tool.
@mrbillymorris12
I know, sometimes its hard to find anyone who listens to decent music.
And imo most of the commerc songs are really bad - but the public got used to them and espacially your ears are trained to that specific sound. so its kinda hard to consider different sounding songs any good.
Its the conditionning of the masses that demands bad music - not the people itself.
Britain :)
Only 2 people apart from me I know are my dad and a guy i introduced them to :)
5:13 Whhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaahhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Is worth not just the whole album but years of listening...
...maybe worth the suffering that causes such deep cries outward?
Haha, same!
Yeah cool. Nice unicorn by the way.
@tynie626 dope ass album.
@spikeleels soooo fukin true!!!!!
@elmobrother hahahaha
@elmobrother especially that guy
@SunsetRubdownz seriously is.
Bon Iver is a BAND, I guess you mean Justin Vernon
haha exactly.
He's not supposed to, I don't think. It's more of a frenzied flow of emotions. I'm pretty sure some of it's improv. It's definitely meant to be that way.
I'd like to see Andy Dwyer (Parks and Recreation character) sing this song
he's the main dude of bon iver. his name is julian vernon
2:55 What might have been lost
2:41
have you even watched the video all the way through?
everyone in the crowd is Micheal Cerra...
@jofman1988 no they havent
what might have been lost
Emma.
the girls by the two of you are cute...
Sean Carey drums was funny in this version
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! That crash cymbal crish crish ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
I Wish I knew what @mrbillymorris12 had said :(
does jofman really believe they're over?!?!
they can't be... PLEASE, someone tell me the truth.
Did the drums at the end annoy anyone else? I understand it was meant to be an explosion of emotion but the drummer kinda drowned out everyone else. I don't know, maybe I'll learn to like it.
mea culpa. i am mistaken.
WHAT MIGHT OF BEEN LOST???
*have been
prove it
Ha ha!!!!!! DON”T BOOOOTHER ME!!!!!!!
Nonsense. This song is amazing, but that's just impossible.
I really think this is a soft fucking song, it's great. One thing I don't understand though, why does the drummer fuck up everything at the end by not keeping a single beat right? Is it some form of anti-music or does he just suck?
its not as good as DJ TIESTO
