They admitted to their crimes (unlike the Japanese) and was trying to keep a clean image of themselves. Imagine if Nazi propaganda films/games/books or films with great gore/violence was allowed. Wouldn't the rest of the world criticize them for allowing such things? You should also think about it from Germany's perspective too. At least now the censorship laws are relaxed in Germany. Actually unstimulated animal killings and animal cruelty was quite common in films well into the 1980s. Many films showed depicted horses with riders being shot. This didn't actually shoot the horse for real, but it was nearly as bad. Instead they would string a thin cable in the horse's path to cause it to trip. Broken legs were quite common and considered an acceptable risk, even though a broken leg is a fatal injury for a horse.
    The film Walkabout (which is quite good) depicts several unstimulated animal deaths where they show the Aborigine boy (none of the characters in the film were named) is hunting.
    Animal cruelty laws in film making weren't really a thing in the late 70's.
    Even Disney deliberately pushed a large number of lemmings over a cliff when they would not perform this "natural" behavior on there own while making a documentary on these animals.
    In fact, lemmings never do this naturally. It's a myth.

It's ... almost physically painful to watch, especially the back half, where you're following the lost crew's tapes. The lack of closure due to how the film is concluded leaves you feeling barren inside, and I just couldn't stop thinking about what all I'd seen. I think that may be one of the most repugnant things about this film to me; I have no closure for the attrocities it presents, so now my soul wants to go back and see it again to try to find some kind of reason, even though I know it isn't there. Seriously, I love the ironic audacity of this film: To try making a point about how the media exploits violence for profit, in a film that was specifically made to profit from the exploitation of violent imagery. When I first saw this, I thought that was just absurd.
    But now thinking about what they asked Ruggero to do, and how he responded by giving them exactly what they wanted, to such an extreme degree that it was banned in 40 countries, and murder charges filed, but presented this ultra-violent imagery within a plot of judgement against the very sort of exploitation he was being paid to create; I think of it now as highly subversive, possibly brilliant.

      Nick Waddle That’s not what it’s about. I know one of the major characteristics of art is that it is open for interpretation, but this had a pretty clear message. It definitely wasn’t about how “all humans are inherently evil” mainly because that’s just not true. Objective evil doesn’t exist. Different people see different things as evil. The message was definitely closer to what the guy you replied to said. If anything it’s a huge lesson for western culture on cultural relativism. Also, labeling someone who doesn’t like the movie as a left wing pussy isn’t very academic. Especially when that claim has little to no evidence. I myself am left wing, but I love this movie and am definitely not a pussy. The guy commentating was just giving his opinion and he said he doesn’t like it for “personal reasons”. That could mean a number of things.

    • @jynexe3056
      @jynexe3056 4 роки тому +7

      @Miguel Flagstaff I'm not quite sure how you can say that. Objectivity regarding morality is difficult. The only way to assume it is to assume that there is a God, and to assume that God can determine what is objectively morally good and communicate it to you.
      To some, objective moral good is killing certain types of people to cleanse the world of their horror. To a lot of people, that means killing certain types of dangerous criminals. Whats a dangerous criminal? It could be someone who murders or someone who spreads what some determine to be dangerous thought, be it then wrong religion (as it would sully God's name), it could be spreading ideas that you find to be evil (such as nazism to an ultra liberal pink haired girl or homosexuality to an ultra conservative muslim)
      This isn't to say having a moral compass is bad, or even that I disagree with your perspective on moral good and bad, but it is to say that your idea of morality would shift if you were raised in a different way. It is to say that there is no objective moral good and moral evil.
      If you can think of a concept that all humans from the beginning of humanity till today can agree or disagree with, you've found objective morality. The field of philosophy will be extremely envious of you, for there is not an insignificant number of people who spent their entire lives trying to determine what objective morality is.

      Agreed! They could easily have faked the deaths. There is no justification at all for the killing of the animals. In an interview with one of the actors he said that they did have an effects for the monkey deaths, but the director wanted the real thing.
      Plus it started the trend of animal cruelty in other cannibal movies. I saw one still of a monkey being tied up and eaten by a snake that will haunt me for life (I can't remember which movie I think it was Cannibal Ferox).

      BINGO. I think this movie is the last thing you should go for as a hard study on anything about society but as a movie, that's where the entertainment comes from. It's just a shock movie but one of the most influential. The fact that people actually thought this was real, despite how it was released SHOULD have been a massive clue that this was just a fictional story, really says a lot. Yeah, I hear you. Like Ryan said, the animal scenes are really hard to get through, especially the tortoise. My mom really doesn't like the whole torture genre, but I agree that Saw is rather tame compared to something like this or Martyrs.

      Still, these are animals were getting killed over there on a dailey base and just in the same manner. The only difference was that there was a camera present this time. I can understand why vegans would be upset by this, but of you're a fan of horror but offended by the sight of food getting prepared, you're probably just as hypocritical as some may say this movie is.

      The thing is that the animals getting killed in the movie weren't killed to make me a burger, they were killed for no reason other than having the shot for the movie, that could have been done easily without actually killing them....and I'm vegetarian but the situation really isnt the same thing imo

    Less than five minutes in and, having seen this movie, I can tell what your issues are with the movie (very much understandably). I watched the movie because it was around 2010 or so, and I had watched "Paranormal Activity", which had me thinking about "The Blair Witch Project" and "The Last Broadcast". I remembered reading about another horror mockumentary that inspired movies like that and I went on to read about it, found and watched "Cannibal Holocaust".
    I think the movie's plot is an interesting one, if excessive. However, like almost everyone else, I think the on-screen animal killings were just too much (especially considering that some of the animals they killed were, I think, protected species). It was frustrating to me for the particular reason that the movie was "about" sensationalism in the media, namely documentaries...aaaand yeah, quite a lot of stupid irony there. The rest of the controversial material, I thought was actually kind of neat to a degree. Namely how Deodato had to produce the cast, including the extras, allegedly killed during filming and he showed how he did the scenes in court, in fact I think that would have made a fascinating real life documentary.
    Is the content of the movie excessive? In my opinion, yes, even discounting the animal deaths. I don't really care to watch it again and I don't blame anyone who can't stomach it. That said, I think that, otherwise, it's some creative film making. It makes me sad that it's marred by such a poor decision by the director.

    • @hermionestranger4964
      @hermionestranger4964 3 роки тому +38

      Agreed -- the idea, message and even the horror aspects were fine, but the director didn't draw some lines in the sand that needed to be drawn. That said, I feel that a lot of the indignation that mainstream media and film news felt over this film was more due to its criticism of "first world" countries committing atrocities but accusing indigenous peoples of being "primitive" (though his own depiction of the indigenous people isn't 100% correct either, with regards to their traditions, food or clothes). There was strong indignation at Vauqier's Afrique 50 as well, which wasn't even a horror film of any kind, just a documentary about the lives of natives in a French colony -- the Eurocentric media couldn't forgive such an anti-imperialist take, and the film was banned (I believe scraps of it remain and can be seen on UA-cam; I've seen a few scenes from some film class DVD of politically censored media).
      Yes, the animal scenes were unnecessary, and it begs the question if the director isn't a hypocrite for using exploitation factors in a film that he claims is anti-exploitation. However, I'm shocked that this film almost threw the film crew into jail for alleged murder and obscenity, and the movie was suppressed across the world, when in the Twilight Zone movie, due to the director's severe negligence and the terrible, illegal working conditions he put the cast through (including very young child actors), three performers died, two of which were children (decapitated and crushed by a helicopter in front of their guardians). The film was released with barely a murmur by the film critics; Landis left the scandal unscathed (though the movies he'd go on to direct, like Beverly Hills Cop 3 and Blues Brothers 2000 were critical and financial flops); and to this day while most critics agree that it's a bad and boring film, few seem to care overly much about the lives sacrificed so brutally for it. There's actually a large number of films and TV shows where cast or crew died during filming (Catch-22, Con-Air, The Walking Dead), and it's terrible that the directors who put the people under them into such precarious situations go away scot-free (while the director of Cannibal Holocaust, who hadn't orchestrated the death of any performer or crew-member, was thoroughly horse-whipped). Some directors are even praised as geniuses -- if it hadn't been for Clint Eastwood's common sense during the making of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, he and co-star Eli Wallach would have been killed in the bridge explosion scene, because Sergio Leone didn't ensure any kind of on-set security even where pyrotechnics were concerned. He was insanely bad to his casts. Wallach was seriously injured numerous times during the course of shooting.
