Another tip is to always have a box at the ready. I always have a donate box waiting so that if I find something that can go, it has a place to go. When the box is full, we donate it and start another. Usually, it ends with several boxes because a little decluttering leads to a little MORE decluttering lol.
Also, I think it helps to remember that living a less cluttered life is a lifestyle, not a project to be completed. With three kids, a grand baby, and 30 years if marriage, I have been decluttering for a very long time. Like dust bunnies, stuff just seems to breed behind closed doors lol and there's always something that can go.

Thanks to Dawn and her amazing advice in all of her videos and including recommending atomic habits, I was able to accomplish an amazing whole house to clutter and I accidentally developed new habits that I had no intention of developing! These include making my bed every day, doing the dishes after every single meal, folding the laundry right out of the dryer and hanging up my coat and bag on hooks rather than dumping them on the dining room table. Just by going through this process I became a tidier person (these actions became as easy and more attractive to me than my old ways) and I can’t think Dawn enough!

I love saying “thank you” to the item. “Thank you, you are no longer serving me. Goodbye.” It makes it so much easier to let go out of a feeling of appreciation rather than resentment. Sending it on to someone else who can use it or putting it in the trash/recycling to make my home more peaceful.

I've been watching for years and I have to say, since you've started ending most of your videos with, "I love you"... it's just made me that much more excited for your content.
It is such a small phrase, and I know you don't know us all individually, but I think, at least in my experience, a lot of times, we ARE the ones that are managing all of the "inventory" and the schedules and the meals and the laundry and everyone else's emotional and physical needs, and making sure our kids and husbands and households feel loved and cherished, and sometimes we just feel feel overwhelmed, or unappreciated, or we just don't feel that we receive all of that love back all the time, and so, while it is something so small that you offer...
    thank you.
Thank you for acknowledging, and for encouraging.
I have always loved your content and even downloaded several of my favorite videos of yours so that I could watch them while I was deployed as they actually helped during homesick periods, but, hearing you say, "I love you", and be so genuine and sincere each and every time...
it literally makes me tear up sometimes.
Thank you for everything you do.
We see you and we appreciate you.

I’ve just started going through clothing totes of hand me downs from my older son and daughter for my younger son and daughter and it’s amazing how much my mindset has changed in a few years. There are SO many clothes! Now as I’m getting out the next size, I’m decluttering at least half, maybe more. Because there is no way an 18 month old needs 23 play shirts. I have long thought of decluttering success as a ripple effect. My foray was figuring out how to keep track every morning of my keys and stethoscope so I could find them immediately without having to hunt. I got a pair of magnetic hooks for the side of the fridge where they go every evening without fail. This translated to keeping the nearby kitchen counter cleared off, and in an ever-widening circle, I established natural "no clutter" zones where clutter could not live. I am not perfect at this and still do have hot spots, but it is the nature of habits to stick when they lead to a reward. Easily found items that launch me out the door, and having serene surfaces with no piled-up accumulation, are a definite reward.

I am so grateful for your channel and ideas. Just days before Christmas 2020, I realized I had miscarried. The days following (waiting on a D&C and dealing with grief I didn't know what to do with), I channeled all my energy to decluttering and organizing my home. I became somewhat obsessive, but your channel largely attributed to the motivation I needed, and the process of getting some things in control in my life helped me greatly in coping with the loss. Don't get me wrong; the Lord saw me through, but He gave me a distraction that changed my life. Now a little over a year later, I still thrive on your advice and, as Joshua Becker points out, the clutter and disorganization is largely tied into our spiritual life. So anyway, that was a long way to say thank you, and God bless you for helping so many people learn ways to live more simply. You have been a big highlight in my life. i feel like i've been decluttering for at least 6 years... and I don't think it ever really sunk in what decluttering or minimalism truly is until december 2021/jan 2022. I got hit with thyroid disease over the spring and spent most of my days in 2021 bedridden and I just realized how much of a pain physical things are. I physically couldn't clean or put away laundry and having full drawers and things on the way made it 100x harder.
However, since this past December, I feel like I am finally seeing my things with fresh eyes. I just want most of it gone. Some things are difficult, but I am more aware of why I am keeping things. I can't get rid of them fast enough. I really was making tasks for myself to fulfill that a)no one knew about but myself ie. read this book and learn about this topic, finish this painting and b)that didn't matter or align with my goals and caused me to spend more money in the long run.
When I do declutter, however, I always get stuck on the same pile of stuff though.... it's a combination of sentimental and aspirational items. I wish I knew how to declutter them. I feel like a huge weight will be lifted off of me when they're finally gone. I'm so tired of seeing these boxes of things, but once I go through them I can't seem to make progress.
I just finished round 1 of decluttering and I will be doing the 5-15 minute declutters as necessary when I clear all the bags out. I'm turning 30 at the end of this year and I really want to enter my 30's with a fresh start. I deserve it and so does everyone else.
p.s. your channel is seriously so helpful. idk what it is about your channel but I instantly start to declutter lol 😄

You are doing amazing! I am a 31 year survivor of thyroid cancer. I have been amazed at the mental toll a non-working thyroid had on me. Only one of my thyroid lobes was removed in 1991. I had the rest removed in 2005 and never looked back. I was never bedridden. But I think your goal of being decluttered as you go into your thirties is genius! Go, go, go!! You will so enjoy your 30's, 40's and 50's so much!! The 60's have started well for me. Keep moving ahead. I am praying for you to have all you want in everything and to not have what you do not need!! PTL! Keep smiling!

I think we should avoid trying to make minimalism satisfying by buying something new. That defeats the purpose, really. If after you've decluttered, you realize the reason your wardrobe has never worked is that you're missing a specific piece, then sure, buy it. But to get into a habit of buying stuff to reward ourselves could very well snowball into the same issue we just eliminated.

I had never realized decluttering is difficult because of the associated guilt. It's so true! Everytime I think about donating a dress, I think I spent 40$ on it I will keep it to wear a few times next summer. Even though I don't even really like it! Also, online shopping is another reason for all the clutter. We buy and we don't return and then we think we should just wear it. Ugh.

Love this!!! Maybe you’ve already done this, but what about making a video about how to decide what comes into our homes? I think a lot of minimalists get to the point where they have internal rules about what they will allow in: systems for one in, one out, guidelines for when to accept free items, plans for what to do with “icky” gifts, and so on. I would love to hear you share your thoughts on this!

Yes 🙌 one thing I have found after being minimal in this last year after finding your amazing channel is how amazing I feel after doing the 5 minute tidy up (doesn’t even take 5) and looking back at my clean and tidy kitchen and living room open space 🥰🥰 feels so good and makes me love my home! Thank you Dawn for all the motivation and guiding me to the minimalism lifestyle and journey ❤️

Dawn, you are my new hero! Before Christmas I used your multiple short sessions to finally regain control over an extra bedroom and get it company-worthy. A few days ago I did a complete, long overdue purge and reorganization of the pantry in one marathon day and I keep going to take peeks to admire it. What a great feeling! I have been doing before and after pictures thanks to your advice so I can literally see and remember my progress. Today began the decluttering of Christmas stuff from the far corners of the attic, which will likely take a few days to purge, consolidate, and return it to its designated zone until next year. You’ve been an inspiration and I’m excited to be going thru your workbook and online courses ASAP! Thanks so so much!

Great ideas, thanks! I've always been a to-do list maker but found that if I wrote 'de-clutter kitchen' on a list for the following day I would easily put it off. Now when I need to declutter, I sit down with a cuppa and list the items I want to get rid of (a kind of inverse shopping list). The next day I can quickly collect the items and if I see any extra bits I don't need, they can go in the bag too, but I mainly focus on quickly gathering the ones on my list, then off to the charity shop with them all. I've often found it less stressful and quicker than wading through all my items in person, plus it's also a great memory exercise as you go through your cupboards and drawers in your mind, picturing what you have! Great for kids too as it splits the chore in two (deciding and physically removing items).

The plan is to pick one thing each month to commit to. Then build on that commitment each addition month. By the end of 2022 I’ll have added 12 new items to my route.
January is declutter the storage room. Goal is one box a day or at least 30 minutes. (Some of the boxes have lots of pictures)

I suffer from fatigue so actually acting on all the things I want to do is hard. We moved in a difficult time. The room of things I wanted to declutter came with us. My spouse wants to just "throw them all away," but I need to go through them first. AH. Now we have a new clutter room because we had a giant family change immediately after moving. Since then we have have other life events happen, and I get too overwhelmed to start in that room. Thank you for your words. I need you to remind me - - - just go in there for 10 minutes, and that it is okay if I panic and take a break! Sigh, decision fatigue is real. Anyway, thanks for your work and motivation. If I’m able to continue to work through the rain, I’m fine. But getting motivated to work indoors, whether it’s raining or not.... not gonna happen. However, it’s now past noon & I’m done outside for the day, it’s gotten overcast & the temps have dropped a bit, so I just decluttered the kitchen while listening to Dawn. Next up: the laundry room!

I have decided to “make it easy”!!! My rv space is VERY limited so that is a no brainer. I am going to go through the house n grab things I know can go to charity. Then I will pack up ALL Knick-knacks and books. It will be a good start and I will see huge progress. I am planning to have totes of things I can rotate out on, like books, small Knick-knacks and clothes. Also I can come back and revisit my storage and minimize more later. Our pastor did a sermon on the Atomic Habits book. He focused in on “habit stacking” ….make a habit of doing something when you are doing something else. Example: when you are driving to work, you pray. When you are praying, pray for specifically your enemies. Then when you pray for your enemies, you pray for yourself to have a a Christian response to your enemies.
Those are now 3 habits born out of one action.

The cool thing about small shifts Ike that is we CAN start a habit and get it going then with the time savings from not chasing our tails catching up with dishes, laundry, you name it chores because we have less to chore on. When it’s easy to keep up then adding some Bible time is easier…one step at a time.
