My husband and I had a re-set when our last child moved out of the house. We sold our 4 bedroom house and bought our “retirement house” that was half the size. We got rid of 85 percent of our stuff easily. 15 truck loads donated, 12 trash and 12 to consignment. This felt so so refreshing. A new start. Two years and still minimal and loving it!!

I was doing some volunteer work in my neighborhood this morning, and one of the other volunteers said she needed to run home (a mile away) to use the restroom. I was able to tell her she could just go across the street to my house, without worrying whether it was clean enough to be presentable. I couldn't have done that a few years ago! That is peace of mind.

My neighbor and I were talking about you and she said something so soothing! Giving a perfectly good "whatever" to a thrift store is almost straight out of the levitical law! It's a precious way to bless the gleaners! We all know how good it feels to find a wonderful thing at the thrift store for next to nothing. And when we donate good things, we're entertaining gleaners unaware! How cool! That makes purging even better.

YEP! cant agree more. Ive found some amazing finds at op shops or second hand stores like 3 dollars for leather colorado boat shoes which new can be a few hundred dollars easily. And shirley temple and disney records etc pretty one of a kind jewellery etc. Now the people who donated those couldve sold them couldve kept them in their homes couldve given them to antique shops and gotten easily 50 to 100 dollars but they didnt. They put it in an op shop i mow have pure wool clothing leather bags from the 30s pioneer heritage cookbooks that are out of print AND are too old to have ebooks etc and i remind myself of not only how amazing they are how much ive loved and still love and use them but that theyre things i could never of gotten otherwise. And so when i donated brand new sony electronics and cameras and brand new shoes and expensive dresses i think i hope someone recieves the blessing i did. Even when that voice in my head is like MONEY! BRAND NEW! YOU MIGHT USE IT! etc like eho cares if in 10 years or 30 years i might be like oh cool! Who cares if it might be worth money then? Who cares if its new or in super good condition? Im not using it, i dont love it, its only a burden to me now and thats not gonna change how i feel about it or make me want to store it til it might possibly be worth something to someone at some point in time. What people dont realise that short of a museum worthy piece od which are donated and rarely bought by the museum that everything and everyone you love will at some point be cremated or buried in the ground and itll all be as good as worthless rubbish. Because of the plastic and the nukes and nonsense the layers that archealogists have used to date and preserve ancient stuff have basically been ruined since the 50s so atm were degrading the previously buried past by essentially putting our rubbish and waste all over it. Technology and society are developing so fast now that things become obselete in 3 years in a lot of cases not still valuable in 30 years or 300 years. The best thing you can do for future generations is not save your stuff its either leave them money or land and plant trees and make smarter choices with how you spend you momey after all you vote with your purse. If you want to gift your grandchildren heirlooms gift them clean air unpolluted earth a safe place to live and grow and feed themselves.
This is my mindset and the mindest of many others younger than id say 30s/40s.
So when i hear that voice i immediately know now that i need to donate this item. And that when i go to the store next ill find something wonderful i needi can be rewarded by that cycle of giving and taking and be happy in the knowledge im giving some new life saving it from landfill and not contributing to the consumerist culture any more than necessary.

Considering that the vast majority of my possessions are second hand, I can attest to this. Over the summer I happened upon a yard sale that was closing in 10 minutes. She had a ton of nice clothing that no one had bought and she just didn't want to deal with it, so she gave me whatever I wanted for free! I got most of this year's wardrobe from her!

But in reality, we never needed permission in the first place. We needed to ignore everybody else's expectations of us, because underneath all that garbage, is our self-confidence. We already know what we want. We just have to get rid of everyone else's expectations to figure it out.

Yeah as a gardener id have to disagree with the lack of todo list outside 😂 theres always something to do in the garden.
Vs when you clean organise etc inside as long as no other family members are there to mess it up you can usually get a good solid 3 hours minimum of the soothing perfect ah feeling of when youre entire body mind and spirit is relaxed like slipping into a hot bath 😊
Granted the lack of people in the garden and the silence of modern nonsense and the pace of nature is waaaaay more peaceful and healthy than inside even with todo lists their fun to do lists in most cases instead of the inside sort which is often repetitive over and over often cleaning up after others and rarely seeing your accomplishment whereas with the land short of a big storm you can see the results of your work endlessly undisturbed and flourishing. So its much more satisfying. And because we have the break of seasons its not horrid to do it because we have a year between doing things in most cases. So its fun. Like eating seasonally. Youre continously excited for food and my body craves the specific seasonal fruits when the weather changes and it remembers ah its cold time for soup! Etc. So you dont have the same meal every week for the entire year and just like blah who cares cant taste it anymore type feeling. Everything becomes awesome.

I was just thinking the other day that I wished when we bought our home 3 years ago that I would have left it “empty” for a while. What I mean is I immediately went out and started buying furniture pieces and decor and new towels etc…. I wish I would have left it be for a while to know what I truly wanted for a space. So something I am doing at the moment is taking down all my decor, packing up all the extra things in my house and see how I feel, see what things I miss and what I don’t care about, essentially putting most of my house in a time will tell box lol or a quarantine box. My life is so stressful and overwhelming at the moment that I need to find some kind of peace. I know when I look around and see things lying around or a pile of laundry I feel overwhelmed. Here’s the kicker I’ve already decluttered my house and continuously do so but I think I’m ready to take my minimalist journey to the next level. Thanks for inspiring us!

I think most of us feel that pressure to get our houses "set up" and have done the same thing. I had to put my foot down when we bought our new house because I learned from our previous move that rushing to get unpacked and house warming ready meant that a lot of things just got shoved into storage and never seen again. I wanted to take my time to see where things really made sense for us and even then we still took at least a box or two a week of donations as we unpacked. Hopefully this is our forever home but boy did I learn if we ever do move again.

Sometimes simplifying gets in the way of my joy, however. I need color around me - textures and coziness, and sentimentals which lends to good memories. Thanks again, Dawn - I regularly turn to your videos to put wind in my sails when my decluterring starts to lag!
Here's a quick suggestion to pass along about self-talk when trying to let go of things - rather than tell myself I made a "mistake" by purchasing something I no longer, or, possibly never used, I like to take a more positive approach & tell myself "it was fun but now I'm done!". Sometimes the purpose an item is meant to fulfill is very short lived. Maybe it's even just to help me recognize that I really didn't need that item afterall. So consider it good and then move on. You can even go the extra step and get your KonMari on - be grateful for what you learned from the experience of having had that item then say sayonara! :)

It took 3 weeks & MULTIPLE trips to the various thrift stores & the dump just to clean the house out to get it ready to sell (I live the closest & the rest of the family was out of state). My Mom didn’t “enjoy” her things because she was convinced that they were worth a lot of money.

@@AndreaD. yep, my mother insisted we keep toys because, "That's going to be worth a lot of money some day!" But then if we wanted to let it go, it was always going to be worth more. Well, it's not because people my age aren't out there looking for this stuff, they were nostalgic when they had kids and looked for it. And it's hit and miss what will end up being valuable.
My parents lived in Scotland during the bombing raids so they were impoverished and always afraid of losing everything. So I understand where it came from. But that's not my life....we have what we need. I don't need to keep stuff.

I have a slightly different take on consumables (maybe a candle is not a great example, but, say shampoo ... which for some reason we ended up with several bottles at the same time). I know I will use it eventually and I feel good knowing I can use up my "stock". Provided I have a proper place to store it out of view, then I like that I am not wasting this resource, especially as we have had a lot of medical costs recently, so not having to pay out extra for toiletries is a real blessing). For other things like clothes etc, I totally agree, bless someone else with it. After all how many shirts can you wear? I donated about 60% of my shirts and am embaressed to say I have not missed them at all. What I have left fits neatly into my drawer in a rolled or folded style so I can see at a glance exactly what I have there and I can make a selection from items I truly love.

It was sparsely furnished and sparkling clean. It had comfy , useful furniture, flowers dotted around and maybe a cushion for comfort and a lovely picture on the wall. And, it was very quiet. That's it. I absolutely loved it.

I have got rid of furniture I didn't really like and bought furniture that I do.
When each room was emptied and stripped of curtains, pictures and other stuff I realised my house is actually bigger than I thought so I have been very careful in what I have put back in.
I have always been organised and tidy but I just had so much STUFF to organise, all kept in boxes etc so it was lovely when I started actually getting rid of stuff, very cathartic!

Has anybody else noticed that watching these videos has dramatically improved their mental health? These videos are easy to follow, and by being quick paced (and not all zenned out and slow) they are easy to follow, digest and the advice can be something you implement as you listen. I think Dawn separates the "your mess" and "my mess" style of minimalism and implements a specific objective measure for what could be the fundamental base of all of our homes. Whilst everyone will have a different outcome, this being a solid goal will create a better living space which is quicker to clean, easier to manage and definitely something we can breathe in... Healing inside as the world outside begins to health with us, too. I find these videos super fun, practical and the energy behind them is becoming the new normal for me. Less stuff, more connection with people and saying YES to a more management, stress free life. I've read some of the comments - I'm a child-free "activist", although don't like labels, and I've loved every parent commenting on this revealing how they have implemented these technique, ideas and reforms. It is almost as if "keeping up with the Jones'" was destined to fail - and now you're all awake. Thanks so much for these videos and community support - whilst I haven't got an individual family of my own, a clean and tidy living space (actually tidy) has improved my mental health. I love these videos as the whole family radiates realism, love and truth. Accountability is ready for 2022 and 2022 is ready for us. # TEAMTOM.

I consigned, sold, trashed and donated thru Goodwill and our neighborhood Buy Nothing group. I must admit that Buy Nothing has been THE BEST way to get items out of our home. Gifting items to others via Buy Nothing who WANT them and will use them locally makes giving them away SO EASY. It also builds community and fosters the great feeling of sharing with others. Dawn would you ever consider highlighting this in the future?

One of Dawn's videos did address this. She spoke about a juicer that she only uses if a family member is sick. So just a handful of times a year. But when she needs it she is glad she has it. For items like this she suggested packing it away somewhere where you know where it is, but where it is not taking up valuable real estate. So in this example, she would not leave it on her kitchen counter, but rather put it in a garage or basement. She does not suggest getting rid of things you are pleased to have even if you only use them infrequently, unless it is an item you could easily borrow from a family member or friend. Hope this helps.

You put things where you use them day to day, any excess can get put behind (if there's space) or elsewhere. Cas/Clutterbug did a great "prime real estate" video about storing pots&pans by the stove, plates by the dishwasher etc. She actually moved extra placemats/table items out of the breakfast bar to turn it into a kids'homework station coz that's what worked/they do in that space. Tailor it to you and you'll see how much time and energy you save!

This is one of your best videos 😍 Clear direction, to the point, and easy to follow. I will definitely be thinking about this a lot. It’s inspiring and it makes me feel like the decluttered house that I want is actually possible!

Dawn, You give great “household management advice” and you also give great “Life Advice”. Thank you for sharing your God given talent and wisdom with us. Watching your videos feels like I’m getting encouragement and sound advice from a long time friend that truly cares and wants the best for me. By the way, I’ve been watching your videos and taking that advice for over a year and it has made such a wonderful difference in our household. We are loving our simplified household and open spaces. ❤️

This is one of my favorite videos of yours, Dawn! Thank you!! I think it can be beneficial for anyone who is really getting hung up with just a yes or no choice to allow themselves quarantine bins with a set date on it, with items that are strong maybes. This can help work through the emotional attachment some people may be feeling, out of the decluttering experience.

So true.... I really want to reach the “core” as u described in the “onion method” video... working 5-10 minutes , part of ur course.... but mostly feel low on energy & prepares...may be need to have structured....
Dawn can u make a video on “5-10 minutes a day but feeling motivated so to complete the area” as stumbling block is need to clear home for that item ( that home too is cluttered).... using Dana s method... my problem is motivations
My 1 of ur favourite question is “ will I buy it again”
So true as u said .. when situation is tough, best self care Is to Declutter....
U r. Mind reader for me & u understand me so very much ...
    Love u too, Dawn 💕

Dawn, You inspired me to let go of the clothes I can't wear, sentimental items I had in boxes, the decor I'm not using, and a lot more. I am heading for a reset. Thanks!

I listened to you a lot and especially when I’m decluttering and it’s so comforting to hear you talking about having a peaceful space and telling me all the things about why this is better and how this will help so as I clean I’m being reminded that this is going to help me, even when at times it’s hard to let personal items go (which makes no sense becuz I don’t use them lol)
Thank you for what you share it really helps me! I feel like ur right here in my house (not in a creepy way, lol) giving me support.

A few years ago we purged truckloads of stuff and "felt minimal". Now we are planning to move, so have boxed up all the things that aren't critical to get through the day. It feels even better! I encourage anyone that is struggling with deciding what to let go of to box up even one room at a time and experience how it impacts your life.

I recently moved out to my own space and I get what you are saying!
Apparently, the reason I feel stressed and locked in our family house are all the stuff that are silently demanding me to work on them while I cannot since I don’t own them. Now I am worrying about my family left there, on how they are burdened without them knowing why.

I feel like I’m living in a minimalism experiment for the last month. We moved from Alaska to North Dakota and our moving container is very delayed. All we brought is our camping kitchen, 7 days of clothes, and sleeping bags. Our rooms are totally empty like that! I’m looking forward to our stuff coming, but I’m also kind of dreading having to face ALL that stuff.

Dawn, you just have a way of making decluttering make perfect sense to me! You help me get out of my head and just get to work. I can't tell you how many ah-ha moments I've had watching your videos. Different decluttering concepts resonate with me at different seasons of life, I think. I love that you are always discussing new theories. You are so poignant and I love your honesty and relatability! Thank you for being you and sharing these videos!!!!!!

I’ve often gotten frustrated over how cluttered our house feels even though I’ve been trying to declutter for years. I’m finally beginning to understand I am not tough enough. I see a lot of grey instead of a clear “yes” or “no” I think of lots of reasons to keep stuff! Thanks so much for sharing this. Slowly but slowly it’s getting easier to get stuff out the door.

My hard thing is that I’m 28 weeks pregnant with baby 5 and my husband and I both have covid so neither of us have the energy to do anything regarding housekeeping. I’m not as far in my decluttering journey as I’d like, but I started a couple months ago so I’ve made a dent. IM SO THANKFUL I began this journey a while back bc I CANNOT imagine trying to handle MORE inventory than I have right now. Every bag out helps. Every “No” to something coming in helps. Thank you Dawn for all your inspiration and encouragement!!

The shirt example made me think of this-why don’t I just take a picture of the shirt that doesn’t fit right now, give it away and then find another one (if I really miss it) when the time and budget permits. I might even use it as a reward for cleaning out the closet. I try to make it fun and not sad that I can’t wear it anymore. Maybe I will even find I really don’t want that item to reappear 💕 thanks for your encouraging talks-you are a bright spot in these lesser light days. ☀️
