  • We drove through Tetbury last month on our way to our Christmas lunch at Highgrove House, home to King Charles III and it looked so beautiful and historic that we thought we would go back for a full day to explore.

With buildings dating back to the times of Henry VIII, lots of antique shops and the original Highgrove Gift shop, Tetbury exceeded all our expectations. Afternoon tea in the beautiful old Close Hotel made it even more special.
I hope you enjoy this tour of this second largest town of the Cotswolds.

Ok …. Which one of you left pieces of those yummy tea sandwiches behind? You realize my mouth is watering 😋 while I am watching this.
Did I read this correctly from the menu… that tea and refreshments costs 19£ per person ?
    That’s incredible value.
The pastries alone would cost much
more if you purchased them in a
    bakery or pastry shop. Everything
you ate looked so scrumptious. Great you could pack the remaining goodies to bring home for later. Thanks for taking us along on your lovely excursion.
    Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 🍁

Helen you made me smile so much with your question 'Which one of you left pieces of those yummy tea sandwiches behind?' I think we both did in the hope that we were going to eat most of the cakes and scones 😀 Yes you read correctly from the menu. The afternoon tea was such a good value at £19.50!!! It was our pleasure to take you along with us. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Love from England 🤗😘

I’m so looking forward to this video, Rosalba, as we used to visit Tetbury from time to time when living in SW England… and I enjoyed watching your visit to Highgrove before Christmas. Tetbury was approximately one hour's drive from our last home …and it’s where I celebrated my 60th birthday several years ago. It was also near my husband’s flying club at Kemble. I have to do some shopping this morning but shall enjoy it with a coffee on my return ❤️

Hello again! This was a lovely little trip down memory lane for me! I recognised so many of the shops and buildings, including the church, which we also visited…and the nearby toy shop (where I once bought a rabbit…for myself!). There are so many small antique shops, as you said - some very expensive but, if or when you return, Top Banana (on the corner as you drove into the main town) is a more ‘normal’ one - we bought a few things in there. Your afternoon tea looked delicious! ( I recognised the hotel, also The Snooty Fox). The Highgrove Shop sells so many lovely things (I love Merrythought Bear!). I liked the range of pottery, with wildflowers, bees and other animals. Like you, on my last visit, I bought some cards and the bag of wildflower seeds …and some silver ‘bee’ earrings. (I’m hoping to start watercolour painting this year and produce my own cards for friends … my latest retirement hobby!). You both always look so happy and you do the sort of things which we like to do! Thanks for another enjoyable video, Rosalba - relaxing to watch with a coffee, after my little food shopping trip this morning.🙂❤️x

Hi Joyce, how lovely that you had such a lovely little trip down memory lane😊 When I passed the toy shop I thought that it looked so very nice and I never imagined that it was going to be so relevant to my lovely viewers (in this case so relevant to you 😘). I loved the fact that you treated yourself to a rabbit from this shop. I'm beginning to do things like that myself too😉. You know so much about Tetbury! I'll watch out for Top Banana next time - a more down to earth place full of lovely antiques would suit us better where hopefully we'll be able to afford one or two things 😊. What a great idea that you are taking up watercolour painting. What a beautiful thing to do for friends and family. Thanks again for your lovely comment. Love Rosalba 🤗🤗😘😘

OK, got it, so the Highgrove shop is not the one you went to on the estate, but is in the heart of Tetbury. How is the name of the town pronounced: bury, like burying the dead or bury, like byor-y, more similar to how we Americans would say bureau, not burr? It is lovely, like all of the Cotswolds and seems such a delightfully people-sized town. Even the size of the church seems cozy and welcoming, not too grand. Well, shame on them: the founders of the parish named it for Mary, mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalen, his friend and supporter, and they forgot Mary, friend of Jesus and sister to Martha and Lazarus who was also important in the life of Jesus of Nazareth! LOL. The graveyard looks pleasant for those who feel the need to visit or do some research on the gravestones or the creatures who live in it, under it or above it. (This is Gloucestershire. They have such a hardworking, devoted duke & duchess. Your name meaning white rose would be Yorkshire with its white rose heraldic symbol.) Oh, how I love the knitted nativity scene, which I imagine is representative of the sheep-breeding and knitted goods business common to the region, is that correct? As I recall, they are known for gorgeous knitted goods, as are the Welsh and Shetlanders, and parts of Ireland and its islands, like the Aran Islands. Again, the interesting colors of the stained glass windows in the church: not the darker or jewel-toned colors one finds in older edifices. Are the open bays at the Market House for livestock when they would perhaps have sold them there or simply for the products of the livestock, but open to the air? Is The Snooty Fox a pub? Love the name, as in you can go there to get a snootful. LOL. Oo, saw an exquisite cerulean blue goblet in that thrift shop. That poor rabbit in the painting on the wall looks a bit skeptical about being at a hotel where he could end up as supper. They've used some lovely mixtures of blues in their decor in the tearoom. It doesn't look overly crowded or noisy. The tea, lemon tart, and all the finger sandwiches sound delicious. I should go to tea with only sweets freaks since I am more a savory person and would not care about most of the pastries, but would love the tea sandwiches. LOL. I hope commercial establishments use the cut-off crusts for making breadcrumbs for other dishes, as many of us do at home. We mustn't waste. Food, service, and atmosphere/ambience are the Big 3, aren't they, in terms of dining pleasure, so you can enjoy the company! Was that a pub dining area you walked through to depart with folks eating hot foods, like maybe a lunch? She's coming back at 2pm! Great, I want to visit that antique shop. LOL. I saw a couple of items I liked in the window as we shopped via camera with you. I like that they had a tavern attached to the first police station. And love that the rents from it supported 8 maiden ladies or widows with no means of support at the almshouse next to the church. Gives the term "public house" a good connotation. I am surprised there was a schoolhouse on the premises, because back in that era I think of the classes for children being held on the church property and being largely basic reading, writing, arithmetic, and the catechism of the church. So - interesting. So many places do January sales to get Christmas inventory out the door before they have to count and store it all for later. I rather like the glittery tree ornaments that appear to be handmade. Love the blue & white porcelain made by Burleigh. Pretty. I espy some old school linen tea towels that are lovely and utilitarian for home or as gifts. Even the ecards I send are done by wonderful artists on the south coast of England. I use them because they are gorgeous and way better than Hallmark, Norcross or American Greetings, who all have rather tacky offerings. Try JacquieLawson.com. Great prices to join them. If I get boxed cards, I get them from art museums or wildlife organizations for their beauty and the organizations they support.

Thank you Pilippa again for your lovely comment. Tetbury is pronounced 'tet' then 'bury' as in 'strawberry' ☺What a beautiful meaning you have given to my name, thank you. I presume that farmers just take the produce of their livestock to the Market House and having this in open air means that this can remain as fresh as possible or I think that was the idea back then when these market houses were built. The Snooty Fox is a hotel and restaurant which serves afternoon teas as well as many other delicious dishes. People can book it for wedding receptions too. The shop that was closed was an antique shop. It looked so good but as it was shut I'll have to go back another day to explore it :o) I think that most if not all of the Cotswolds became very wealthy because of their sheep and especially their wool which had a special golden tone very much liked and sought after by the rest of the country and by many countries in Europe too. I checked the ecards you mentioned and they are so beautiful and so different from anything else I'd seen before. Thank you for the suggestion. 🤗😘

What a wonderful day. I was hoping you would do Tetbury. I have wanted to go there for so long travelling from Canada on one of my trips to London, but was hard to get there it seemed. I hope you will go back and take us to the many antique shops also. The hotel you had tea at was so nice. Lots of sweets and sandwiches looked delicious. I just loved your music, I am not only enjoying your days out, but the music is so lovely. Loved your purchases at the Highgrove shop. Many things on sale. Love your videos and day trips so much. Senior and this is so enjoyable to me and love your talent. Thank you. Looking forward to the next one. Soon I hope.

I'm so glad you were able to get to Tetbury through this video too. I will definitely need a full day looking at the antique shops in Tetbury as there were so many and when I go back I'll take you along for sure 😉 Like you I can never get enough of antiques 😊 See you very soon🤗🤗😘😘 xx

I've been to Tetbury so this was very nostalgic! We stopped there when exploring Gloucestershire a few years ago. I love knitted Nativities, my mother has made a set for various family members. We have a full set including the 3 kings, 3 shepherds and the sheep. The Afternoon Tea was very reasonably priced, I thought.

I'm so glad you enjoyed our trip to Tetbury. How lovely that you managed to stop there while exploring Gloucestershire. That's how we've been discovering places. It's usually on our way somewhere and when we come across beautiful villages and or towns we either stop briefly to explore or decide to go back at a later date if we can :o) Your knitted nativity must be so special as it was made by your mother. How lovely! Thank you for your comment. 😘

Fortnum and Mason carries Highgrove products, so you can have them shipped from there. That is a great responsibility asking Rosalba to do this. She is providing us with these wonderful day trips and that is wonderful enough. Better she enjoy her days out. Also the Royal website for example Buckingham Palace shops I believe do carry products also and will ship; or they did.
