    Laos is the most heavily bombed country in the world. In the Vietnam War the US dropped 2 million tonnes of explosives there. Now, a brave band of women are finding and destroying the 'bombies' left behind.
    The women walk slowly through the undergrowth, scanning the ground with metal detectors. Given there are up to 80 million unexploded munitions in Laos the women are doing a job that will take more than a lifetime to complete. "I was excited as well as frightened", says 46-year-old Phou Vong, recalling the first time she found a 'bombie'. "I hesitated a bit, but thought I should be glad to see it, because in a sense I was helping my people." Phou joined the team 3 years ago, after her husband was killed in a road accident. "There was no-one to help me but myself, and I had no money to support my children's education." She now earns $250 a month, that's better than the average wage in Laos. It's a special empowerment programme to give much-needed opportunities to local women. But the de-miners are worried their funding will run out. "We won't be able to clear them all, there are just so many of them." More than four decades after the American campaign ended, undetonated explosives still contaminate forests and fields. And it's Lao civilians who are risking their lives to clean them up.

    I feel so guilty. I was a munitions specialist in the Air Force assigned to Utapao RTNAB. For a year I built and loaded bombs for the B52's that rained this destruction on Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Perhaps it is Karma that I too have ended up crippled and disfigured by the agent orange that was sprayed by my country to clear the munitions area. My government should help the victims of those countries as they have helped me. Forgive me.

      You were done dirty by Progressives who sought "Partnerships between government and industry". They have continued their mischief up to this day. Just ask the Ukrainians, who the US government gives just enough to piss off Russia without letting them win.
      "My government should help the victims of those countries as they have helped me. "
      The US promised the DRV $3,000,000,000 for repairs and reparations. We should have honored our commitments.
      I think we should have sent McNamara and Lyndon Johnson there too. For trial.

      The USA wasn't worse than any other war party, but you weren't a single bit better either. Your government did everything they thought was necessary to win this war, no matter how many innocent Asian civilians (or GIs) had to die for it. The problem is that many people actually still belief that there was any noble justification for how this war was fought.

    I have been reading comments, and everyone is calling Americans stupid. Not every single American citizen is responsible for this. Please stop saying such things. Americans are nice, yes there are some crazy ones, as there are crazy people in every ethic background.

      Useful idiots vilify anyone stopping the spread of communism. Funny, I don't see anyone moving to North Vietnam...... if the US didn't intervene these people who are living a free life would be slaves to a communist regime.

    The "people of Laos" weren't bombed by the U.S. The Vietnamese in Laos going down and using the Ho Chi Mien trail were bombed. Laos didn't remain neutral by virtue of letting the Vietnamese use their country to supply armed troops in the south. If the North Vietnamese can go into Laos, so can the U.S. Everything is fair in love and war.

    • @lmaonade.
      @lmaonade. Рік тому +1

      You're deranged if you think any of this is reasonable. Laos never sided with any of the parties, that's a fact.
      And it's not like they could do anything about the Vietnamese because they were getting bombed to submission without discussion. This was an act of aggression.
      Do not justify the animosity of humanity man. This mindset is what brewed war to begin with. Just admit, the US has screwed up severely and have no moral point to bargain for. A superpower gone mad with power.

    I certainly was there at the time, people blame Diem for his dictatorship at the time, when Diem was gone, people start to say how good he was, corruption getting worse by the day, things get much worse after 1975.BTW which country in asia at the time is not under dictatorship? one can argue Japan and India, are they really not in some form of dictatorship?
    The modern day version of VN is Iraq, people don't like Sadam when he was there, ask the Iraqi now if they have change their mind? If not because of world opinion, US would have abandon Iraq like VN.
    You're right US doesn't win any war since 1945, because the country is run by interest of the big corprations rather than the interest of the people, winning the war do not equate to making more money.

    I don't condone what happened however during a war things like this will happen. Laos was suppose to be with neither side but they allowed the North Vietnamese to use the country to get to South Vietnam. In order to stop the chain of supplies to getting to South Vietnam the US had to bomb the trails. I am sure the US could do a better job of helping to clean up but then you get into the politics of this. Sad all the way around.
