Base bleed fills the vacuum behind the projo increasing range approx 5KM. The projectile does not slit on its long axis, instead the base is pushed off the body. There is actually shims around each bomblet. There is a mix of M42 and M46 bomblets in the round. The 42 have an embossed body adding in frag and the 46 a solid body and are loaded at the base of projectile to prevent the bomblets from crushing during firing and ejection set back.

In ‘71 I was on my third tour in VN AS A Combat medic. Some one decided we should run ambush missions. The team was clerks and jerks-no infantrymen. We were set up on a west to east trail leading to a NVA R&R village. Now 6NVA Come down the trail, smoking and joking. My young 2LT ( FA) wanted to blow the ambush on them. I told him to hold off and the team seargent said said “ It’s Doc 3rd tour you listen to him.” Well he did and behind the first 6 came long line of NVA. We lost count at two hundred. We called in to base to swing over the ground surveillance radar to between us and the ville. Immediately the 155 mm started firing with ICMS (cluster rounds which we called firecrackers.)Next morning a ACR TROOP went out get a body count and estimated a 850 body count. The artillery got credit and we got zip.

When I was in the army, in addition to M109 166mm (6.1 inch) self-propelled howitzers, they still had M110 8 inch (203mm) self-propelled howitzers. Those had 180 M42 submunitions per shell! They quit using the 8" guns because the effectiveness of the 155mm has been increased so much, mainly due to increased accuracy of fire, and they said they don't need anything bigger than that. But, size matters. It would take 2 rounds of 155mm to lay down 176 submunitions, and a single 8" shell still beats that by ~2.3%. Like people say about engines, there's no replacement for displacement.

@@jamesc37 I don't remember them having canvas, the guys were just out in the open. But that was in Louisiana, where the units I supported only had M109s and were inside the turret where they should be. I saw some 8-inch guns there but not a lot, then when I was in Germany we didn't have any artillery where I was. Mostly armor and some infantry and helicopters. I was a small arms repairman but borescoped an M109 once at Fort Polk because they didn't have enough artillery repairmen. When the borescope shorted out an electric arc burned the back of my hand and stopped my heart for a little while, but it started beating again on its own. "The good old days." 😀

@@jamesc37 I remember sleeping ON a vehicle at Fort Polk. There were no scorpions or poisonous snakes up there. Alligators were too scarce to worry about, but Louisiana is one of only a few states that has all 4 types of poisonous snakes, rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths AKA water moccasins, and coral snakes. Plus you have to turn your boots over and shake them in the morning, to make sure they're not full of scorpions. If you lie down on the back of a cargo truck, the canvas hangs down a little bit between the ribs, kind of like a hammock. It's a lot safer up there, and you won't roll off and fall like you might if you sleep on the flat metal roof of a shop van. That's a good place to hide in the shade under a camo net, but not a good place to sleep if you toss and turn.

You don't mention the safety mechanism on the fuse. We learned in a normal situation or in close combat or road ambush situations you need 70 meters between you and your target for the fuse to activate. There are some kind of system or splint in the fuse that fly off due to the rotation or something simular. This prevent the granade to explode inside the barrel. We were training for a road block situation with the M109, we decided to fire the main artillery gun like a tank in what we called direct direction, with backup of two cal 50 machine guns. Our officers claimed that we were to close. We argued that yes we saw we were to close, but the outcome for the charlies of having a 45 kg granade fire at your truck at 40 meters will create chaos and confusion! 😁 The officers took our point 😉

One small note: In a shape charge the entire case isn't filled with explosives, you got the shaping cone correct however there's only air underneath the shaping cone! The initial explosion inverts the cone into a smooth jet-stream which then punches into the target with roughly a 1-2 inch standoff

The main problem with cluster munitions was the anti personnel mine version. No one uses those anymore. The land mine version was the one with a problem of "persistance" where mines that escaped clean up could be found much later. The media never did state things in proper detail so the current, immediate exploding grenade version, gets equated to the earlier "Inhumane" version. The modern version might actually be better than a solid big charges shell since the individual grenades only make a small hole, and the shrapnel is stopped by most buildings. A big conventional shell will destroy a building. One of the grenade bomblets probably only damages the roof and the room immediately under it, if it goes off course. The weapon is still only used against mass formations of vehicles or troops outside of urban areas anyways because of this. Troops will be in a building basement, so you want to crush them with the big charge. Nice graphics and explanation, fuzzy thinking.

@@newone-gd9sk define "them" the Bomblet, or Mine version? The USA and most other civilized nations steer away from the "FASCAM" versions.
Most countries also avoid the incendiary bomblets, and Russia has been using it since the first week.....

we still use the land-mine version they're being fired behind russian attacks so they hit them when they retreat but these new ones can be deactivated easily by trained personnel that are trained to go back after and clean them up

Whats more fun is when they attach micro high powered magnets to these grenades. That way they seek out metal objects like tanks and trucks.

I wish the Americans all the best. But the United States should feel on its territory the same thing that they bring to other countries, such as Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine. I wish cluster munitions to fly to the homes of owners of arms corporations, as well as to the homes of members of the Senate, Congress, the CIA, as well as propagandists of the NY Times, Washington Post, CNN, etc. This day will definitely come, and much faster than the US thinks.
