He redefines the meaning of natural acting... I'd say he isn't acting at all - he IS the character. He becomes the character in such a way that he doesn't have to act it out... it's mind bugling.

Saw this film freshman year. Before there was Bill The Butcher. Before there was Daniel Plainview. Before there was Lincoln. Daniel Day-Lewis is the best film actor to ever do it. Bravo, lad.
I'm one those who thinks his TWBB performance is his best. However I think this one is a close second.
I would’ve said the same but he broke two ribs just being in that wheelchair trying to be Christy Brown, insane commitment to that character.

@@RMusing it does in this case because he’s portraying a illness so debilitating there’s nothing like it he put himself through that much pain to deliver a performance like that to this day it’s still unmatched.
@@dazzaMusic He got pneumonia while shooting "GANGS OF NEW YORK" and refused to take medicines as the medicines are from Modern Times not from eighteenth century.
So for me GANGS OF NEW YORK came in second place.

they don't make movies like that anymore I remember seeing this movie for the first time back in 1984 on Cinemax that movie was one of my favorite movies and it still is Right today

My Personal Opinion:- His performance in "GANGS OF NEW YORK" AND "THERE WILL BE BLOOD" is much better.
allora come hai fatto a vedere questo film nell'84 s 6:51 e lo hanno girato nell'89? Poi dtate a fare la classifica delle migliori interpretaziono di Daniel quando sapete benissimo che sono quasi tutte perfette al di là del valore intrinseco del film. Io, per esempio, amo alla follia la sua interpretazione di Gerry Conlon ne "Il nome del padre", ma comunque non posso staccare gli occhi da praticamente tutte le sue interpretazioni. Le sue modestia e riservatezza, solo 21 film in tutta la carriera non lo siutano nella fama, d'altronde a lui la fama non interessa, anzi la fugge, ma resta comunque il PIÙ GRANDE.

It's easy to overact,like he had to do for this character. this was not a great performance. He has done better work than this. He is one of the great actors of our generation, maybe the best.
