Installing a Shindaiwa Speed-Feed Universal 400 Trimmer Head on a Stihl model FS90R String Trimmer

  • In this video, I show the process I went through to figure out the correct 'solution', using parts included with the Shindaiwa "Speed-Feed Universal 400 Trimmer Head" in order to fit it to my Stihl model FS90R string trimmer.
I show this because the FS90R is NOT one of the great many trimmer models listed by Shindaiwa as being compatible with their 400 trimmer head, and so there was a bit of messing around and experimenting to find the correct combination of fittings to make the match work out.

Much appreciated sir!!! I have a Stihl FS131R (which is also not listed as being compatible). Your model was also not listed as being compatible. But with your help I was able to make it work! I used the green bushing (without the spacer). I really appreciate your video!!! Thanks again!!!!!

I extend my sympathy to you for having to deal with poorly-written instructions. Congratulations for getting the feeder to work!

Wow. Thanks for making this video. I have the same trimmer and have gone through all the stuff that you experienced. I wish I had watched your video before I attempted the install today 😆 Between the Chicanic video and yours, I can see the errors in the Shindaiwa instructions and I’m pretty sure I can make it work. Nice job, thank you!

Hey, I had already watched a few videos about this Speed-Feed trimmer, so I was partially prepared to install mine on a Ryobi Electric trimmer that I‘ve had for about 6-8 years. Anyway, I had to take the Stock shaft completely off my trimmer, but I had to take the New Head apart, remove the Black bushing w/the Brass metal bushing & using the White bushing w/the Ref metal bushing. I initially put the Black round gasket on first, but it was too tight. The Head would not move. Take it apart & remove that gasket & reinstall the New Head again. It leaves a gap of about 1/16-1/8 of an inch gap, but it’s closer than the stock head. Anyway, after reinstalling everything, it spins up nicely & reinstalling the Blue Twine was a piece of cake. My instructions didn’t help me much, just remembering the UA-camr videos showing me how to change out the Black metal to the Red metal bushing helped. Also, there was no Base-Plate on my Ryobi trimmer, unless I had already misplaced or lost it.

I saw the Chickanic video you mentioned. I need a new head for my trimmer. Mine is a Bolens. I see it listed as fitting in your video. I'm going to order one after seeing your video. Thanks

If you dont like the video ppl just donr watch. Nearly 30mins to do something that should realistically take 5mins or so is just not for me so ✌🏿

@meshachfoster749 , not sure why you bothered to write a useless comment after suggesting to others that they "just don't watch" if they don't like it. You seem to be confused.

I put on of these on my Stihl FSR 130 at the advice of my local lawn and garden store..........first, thanks for the video as the instructions included with the unit are BEYOND worthless...........so I might honestly say that I see NO benefit to this over the stock Stihl cutting head............first, they advertise it as only taking 20 seconds to load more string as you just shove the string through and then ratchet the head to wind it onto the inner spool............EXCEPT ....your line comes off of a ROLL and there for has a slight curve to it, often preventing it from going straight through the head, so you end up having to take the head apart to get the line through it............takes MORE time...........additionally if the line breaks off inside the head it takes a LOT more time to take it apart and refeed than on the standard head.........and then lastly .........the thing ratchets CLOCKWISE to load the string........well since these heads use reverse threads, if you have to remove this head, it will just keep ratcheting without coming loose..........so you have to take it apart and put pliers on it to get it off..............again no benefit to these at all.

@davidthayer6969 davidthayer, I completely disagree with your assessment of this product.
Other than the instructions (which might be good for many models of trimmer) being lacking, I have been delighted with this new head on Mt trimmer. The bump feed works better than the original head. It is much easier and quicker to load new string than with the stock head, and I don't need to disassemble the head to do it.
As for your complaint that the curved string coming off the original reel does not want to slide through this head when loading it; I initially experienced this issue, but in less than a minute I figured out that I just needed to bent the first foot of string in the curvature opposite how it comes off the reel, after which it is straight enough slide easily into the head.

@@youtuuba in addition the notches on the edges of the head where you grab it to ratchet it, hit objects bouncing the trimmer away if you get too close.

Tech support is worse than useless. They cannot process simple common sense thinking and seem to be there to just point you to purchase a new product. I've encountered that in many industries/manufacturers that don't want their tech support to actually do what you would expect them to do. They just read off a screen and basically lie about not being able to use their product the way you are hoping to. Disgusting really. By the way, the spool is meant to be used with the white central piece if you have a RH trimmer, usually a bent shaft type. In your case you keep the black central piece and use the spool with the L up since you have a straight shaft trimmer. Congratulations on muddling through that assembly.

This vid was truly painful to watch, I feast forwarded through the majority of it. Complain complain and complain. Definitely could of edited it better. Less commits would of been better and made for a better instructional video. But nice effort.

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba  Рік тому +3

Josephtanga, I can't take comments written like yours seriously. To wit:
      - "Truly painful. That means it actually caused you pain. Which tells me you exaggerate, or are lying.
      - "Complain, Complain, Complain". I call things as I see them, which sometimes includes criticism or complaint. But that was hardly the bulk of this video. Again, you exaggerate, which is counterproductive in a retort such as yours.
      - "Could of"....the words are "could have".
      - "Less commits".....'comments?'. Sloppy!
      - "Would of".....where did you go to school?
This is not an instructional video. It is a record of my experience installing this product, and something of an indictment of the manufacturer's tech support.
