I can't help but get a chuckle out of the structure of the Slendy story, because it's self perpetuating like that. He exists on belief... so tell anyone you can that he's real? Make MORE people believe in him? I remember when I first started learning about it, and they said he comes to you if you've seen him, know about him, or are afraid of him... but the sites and videos want to show you pictures, tell you about him, and make him scary. XD
It’s reminiscent of the old Nightmare on Elm Street movies, where the way Freddy got his power was by kids believing in him and hearing about the nightmares, thus allowing him an opening into their dreams to take their lives for his own gain.
There are quite a few that fit into the bogeyman archetype in different folklore. I think that since the internet is becoming it's own culture, the net required it's own bogeyman and the Slenderman story became so popular because he fits.

I remember when I was young 9 or 10 years old at night around 12pm i saw a very tall and thin man in my room i he just stared unmoving as if a statue tried to shout for my mother but i could not in my ears i heard an inaudible sound that haunts me even to this day it continued for a week or so than for no reason i started to forget and slowly this memory faded and i slept peacefully... but i will never be able to forget the fear, anxiety and dread i felt in that time it does not matter if you believe me or not i just want to get this off my chest.

I had an encounter. I think it may be relevant. I was about 7-9 years of age. I was playing with my dolls in my room. As I was playing, I had a strange feeling. A sort of being watched feeling. I had the urge to look up at the window. Once I did, I saw a large white hand. Larger than any average male's. It struck me by surprise, but I wasn't afraid. I was more of a confused. I stood up. I was somehow drawn to it. I walked over to the window and stared at the hand. I didn't know whether I was hallucinating or not, so I called my mother into the room. She opened the door with a somewhat worried look. I hadn't ever called her from my room before, so she probably thought I'd hurt myself or something. I pointed to the window. "Do you see that?" I asked. My small finger was pointed to the giant palm of the white hand. She raised an eyebrow. "See what?" "The hand! Is James home?" I questioned. James was my step father at the time. He usually was much of a jokester, so it seemed reasonable to suspect it be him. "No? And, there isn't a hand." My mother gave a frown and stepped closer to the window. My cousin was spending the night at my house. He was about 11-13 years old. He walked into the room with an eyebrow raised. "Yes, ma'am?" "Do you see a hand?" My mother asked. I had placed my palm on the window, my hand flat on the glass. The white hand seemed to push harder. "No. I don't." My cousin frowned and scoffed. "She's probably just messing with us." My hand still pressed against the glass, I moved my face closer to the window, squinting into the darkness outside. I saw a silhouette of a tall creature standing on my front lawn. From then on, I looked out my window every night to see if I could see him once more, but I haven't seen the man since. I'm a very curious person. Believe it or not, this is a memory of mine. I once saw him in my kitchen it happened so fast I couldn't register whatever it was, not only that my cousins invited me to the cabin part of our family owns, since it was a longer drive by the time we were even close it was dark what I saw was disturbing, a hunched over figure around the size of a large dog in a field with a fence surrounding it when the headlights hit its form we were driving somewhat fast so all I saw was its eyes it was just like when you see a cats eyes in the dark, but something just seemed so wrong. Anyways for all I know it could have been a hallucination or something but both experiences have stuck with me to this day, and I still see things in our yard or feel like I'm being watched not to mention my house also has ghosts ( a woman was shot by her husband and then his shot himself) she told me her name. What's weird is that's all the info we got on the house. My family and for some reason especially me attracts the supernatural.
