Hawai'i Hobbyist and Kaimuki Backyard - two awesome channels. I have a 40 gallon tub of guppies in my backyard in Mililani, so I'm learning a lot. I'm adding mango leaves to my tub today. Mahalo!
This is really cool. US home breeding is really important right now to continue the hobby where there has been no Asian fish imports for the past 2 years!
I'm so happy I found your channel. Just earlier today I was looking at plastic tubs to start ponds in my garden. My brothers and I bred guppies and bettas when we were children, and "sold" them to our local fish store for credit. It was by no means a profit-making venture but mainly a fun hobby for us. It has been many years now since I have had aquariums. Life got in the way as it sometimes does. I'm finally in a position again to get back into the hobby, and your videos coupled by my inspiration this morning to start pond outdoors was a happy coincidence. If you believe in coincidences, that is. I don't. But I digress. I used to work and live in Hawaii for a few years, but I am no longer there. I am in a part of the country where an outdoor pond for guppies would be feasible for only a few months. But I do own my own home now, and I just happen to have a large, vacant room, which would be ideal for a fish room after some necessary modifications. So, my plan now is to get back into the hobby, breeding guppies again for fun, using my fish room year-round, and summering my guppies outdoors, bringing them inside in the fall. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for the inspiration. And yes, I have subscribed. Aloha.
Hello Annalee. Memories of you and your brothers raising guppies together must bring a smile to you. It's awesome that you'll start raising guppies again. I hope you can find some beautiful guppies. I wish you the best. Enjoy and have fun with it! Cheers!

Do you plan on crossing guppy strains to develop your own lineage? Dumbo Mosaics seem to be a very popular strain lately, and it would be interesting to see what traits you pick to strengthen your current strain since they will need out-crossing anyway in a few generations
Hello Paul. Metal grate is to distribute the load a little more evenly on tub bottom. I had some of the grates laying around and decided to use it. I don't think it's necessary though. Thanks for watching!
Nice video! Great setups too! How do you protect your Guppies from Dragon Fly larvae? They can kill fish on occasion. I know there are other nasty critters that love to put their larvae in an outside tank. Is moquiteos a problem over there? I can’t remember them being a problem with all the Chickens running around the Islands. I only been to four of the Islands in Hawaii. Thank you for sharing and I really enjoyed watching! Godspeed!
Hello Jose. As far as I know, I've had only one dragon fly larvae in my tub. I have a video posted showing the larvae. I've also never seen any larvae skin on the lily flowers. No mosquito problem. If there are mosquito larvae in the tub, the guppies will eat them. You are right..... there are a lot of wild chickens running around the island. Hope you enjoyed your visits to Hawaii. Take care.
Glad to see that your breeding is going well! I wasn’t fortunate enough to get a good selection of dumbo mosaic from the sister shop of moanalua pets. Fortunately the second generation is looking much better than the original, not as impressive as your. Keep up the great work!
Have you tried dwarf gourami or bettas like this? They don't need oxygen from an air pump Bcoz they breath on the surface and they like warm temps too... Use that spare tub for them, they have awesome colours than guppies...
Hello Joseph. Maybe I'll raise some bettas in the tub soon. Check out UA-cam Channel "Kaimuki Backyard". He raises bettas and gouramis in outdoor tubs.

How do you deal with ammonia build up before the beneficial algae set in? Does the water lily help with the first few weeks before the algae kicks in?
I haven't had a problem with ammonia. For the new tubs, I haven't been putting too many guppies in there. And, the 10% water changes help. Thanks.
