    Looking great James, all those little refinements are adding up to make a spectacular build.

    This project is absoulutely fantastic! Love how your droid turned out with so many controllable parts!

    Love when it hits the camera at the end. Amazing work! I am fond of the open panels without skins on it because you can appreciate the work behind it, but I am one of those people who prefer seeing back stage than "front stage" most of the time.

    I really like the simplicity of the panel mechanism. Simple, but pops up on a complex motion for a bare panel.

    Awesome video, James! Do you have any plans to experiment with any of the "metal" or "wood" filaments that are coming out? It would be cool so see how well they print and what their properties are like.

    +James Bruton (XRobots) - Brilliantly beautiful as always! I would love for you to address the exposed hardware on the feet before you take it to the next convention. There is something about the exposed wheels that steals a bit of magic from all your efforts.

    • @PaperDragons
      @PaperDragons 9 років тому

      Awesome! The additional efforts you put into this have truly realized and validated your goal of having an open frame design. Especially being 3d printed. Although most people will never know just how much work went into it.... We know and you are appreciated.

    20 til 4:00 in the morning. exhausted from a long night at work. just about to go to bed, when I notice a new video notification on my phone. Well, I guess I can wait 10 more minutes! :P
    But I love the head panels, really starting to give the Droid some personality. part of me wants to see it skinned, just to give the project a sense of finality at the end of it. But then we'd not see all the work that's going on inside of it! quite the conundrum...

    I was hoping you were going to show the 3:2 leg conversion again after that dance. It's really impressive I've seen some of the droid builders and I know that something being able to do that many actions is very complex so I really have to compliment you on your work James. I've only just started working with 3d printing and seeing your stuff gets my mind really pushing to see what kind of limits there are with 3d printing. Please keep up the work.

    It would be awesome if you could 3-d print your next bb-8 in clear abs or some other clear material to see the mechanisms work. Just a thought. Thanks btw for giving an in-depth look on the R4 build.

    Just a few suggestions. Yeah a real pico projector would be awesome. Covering up the wheels would be good. Having the utility arms open up more with the zap gun and grabber arms would be good too. Still, amazing work!

    I can just imagine R2D2 exploding/overloading and all of its head flaps popping open - so perhaps if you were able to run the head panel servo's at the end of the R2D2 overloading sound you could just select the sound from your remote and have a great effect to go with it :)

    Great. The head looks much cooler now. One observation - As these new flip panels on top create nice shallow cone contour, the top of your periscope doesn't level with that. Minor issue but it somehow bugged me a lot :D

  • @HeroNoodle
    @HeroNoodle 8 років тому

    Two things: Firstly, the droid would be better if it had coverings on it, unlike C3-P0 in Episode 1 of Star Wars and also if you continue the series on this particular droid, that would be sweet! Anyway awesome job!

    It's probably too late now after all the coding and so on, however have you ever considered changing your controller to a pair of gaming joysticks, one for the head control and one for driving? the higher end joysticks have quite alot of buttons which (knowing you) you be able to hack in to and solve the running out of buttons issue. it would also depend on your budget of course. Just an idea! great work so far!

    Watched this whole series in one night, very interesting! I think it would be cool if you eventually made it capable of moving on its own and had various sensors for avoiding obstacles, with possible human interface elements.

    This is coming along nicely. One thing looking odd though is the periscope's panel sitting lower than the latest panels added to the top. Shouldn't they all be at the same angle and elevation?

  • @danieldb631

    Perhaps you could put in one of the electric tazer extensions or an arc welding arm similar to the one R2 used on Luke's X-wing in Return of the Jedi. Other possibilities include a miniature unfolding transmitter dish or a blinking emergency beacon.

    I did not watch all 19 parts (yet) but I have a few ideas, in case you are running out of ideas:
    I would build things in, which you can use in your every-day life, like a compartment for phone, or a wifi-router (I would use a raspberry π for that [would be around 40€]), or a compartment to store little or precious things. I would also build some speakers into the inner body.
    Of course I do not know, how strong your battery/power source is, so it might be a bit to much :D

    This is starting to really take shape now. The new flaps could you change the speed that they open and close. Might be sorted once you put something in there to come out when they open. But as it is I think the speed they open is a bit quick.
