This is one of the coolest comments I've received in a long while. So glad you were able to keep the boat on the water and the kids fishing. Happy Father's Day!!
Thanks Had my trim motor go bad. This was a life saver. Johnson was very similar. You have any tricks for a stuck pivot pip on the hydraulic arm? Nee to get that loose to get the back bolt on the motor.
I have a Johnson 88 and it will tilt up but not down. Tried to find how to release manually but failed. Going to take another looks when I get home. Thanks for the info.
You’ve likely got a bad solenoid, or it could be the switch on your control (do you have a switch on the motor too to test?). That motor should have a manual release on the side of the mounting bracket similar to this one in the video!!
Mine is a 2022 Tohatsu 20HP with tilt only. I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish it had both trim and tilt! I didn’t have any understanding that they might be two different systems until seeing this video. I just thought the tilt motor wasn’t strong enough to provide trim. Now I need to do some research to better understand the difference. If you haven’t already done a video on that, that might be a good idea for one.
Most modern motors 20 hp and under have TILT ONLY. A lot of bigger motors have a tilt cylinder and a trim cylinder which is why you’ll almost hear it “change gears” when tilting up. Trim is a higher powered cylinder with more torque for trimming under load. Tilt is just the “move it fast” cylinder. Not much you can do now other than add an aftermarket power trim bracket.
No. If you loosen this manual release screw nothing needs to be done other than retightening it. However it's a good idea to check the fluid level as a place to start in troubleshooting why it may have quit working!
@@tomspontoons Awesome thanks! Now if I could just figure out why my outboard slowly inches down over time. Don't see any obvious leaks. Any clue where I would look?
@@thegreencantinadefinitely not my area of expertise, but I’d have to assume there’s a leak somewhere. I don’t really know how to check for a leak other than looking for fluid. Might be time to call your local service marina
Maybe need another hand helping lift, that’s not a light motor. Otherwise I’d be nervous that your trim cylinder is locked up. Has it been sitting a long time, or just started acting up?
Yes, but obviously not when running for a number of reasons. You could leave it just slightly loose so it can tip up and down if you’re afraid of hitting the bottom, that way the motor will lift and do less damage. I’ve heard of people doing that instead of fixing the power trim and tilt if it quits working.
We have tried that loosening the pressure nut. The motor is still stuck in the down position. It’s almost like it’s frozen. It will not budge. What do we do?
Can you drive your boat no problem after you do this ? I have a mercury XR-4 150 hp tilt will only go up not down used this tip and it went down can I drive on it ?
Glad it helped get your motor down. Yes, you can run the motor like that but if you rev it high in reverse it could pop up out of the water! So be sure to tighten it back down.
Yikes! Are you using a standard screw driver or a MASSIVE flat head one? I'm not really sure what your options would be other than maybe draining the fluid from it so it loses pressure. Not even sure that would work on all outboards.
Thank you may have save me a lot of time and money As I have just purchased the boat and The motor is making all the right noises but not but not moving at all at all so so guessing the screw maybe Been undone at some point
@@medlerssmallbikeadventures Definitely a great place to start! Sometimes folks will loosen the screw too if they're having trouble with the trim/tilt and don't want to pay to have it fixed. So they'll loosen the screw allowing the motor to tilt up easier if they hit something...I'm hoping for your sake that the trim/tilt unit is fine and the screw was just backed out and left on accident!
Sorry to be a pain .. so I looked at the manual screw but it was tight so I am lost again any ideas would be welcome as I said the motor sound like it's running when button pressed up or down but no movement thank you
@@medlerssmallbikeadventures Next would be to check trim fluid level by adding fluid. Worst case would be a motor issue or seal….at that point it’s time to take it to a marina for a mechanic to diagnose and fix.
Tell me how to lift the motor when I’m by myself and the trim up stops while on the water? 😂 there needs to be some kind of tool to help raise it one man style 😂
OH NO!!! Sorry, no quick tips for that one. They do make a tool of sorts that helps to tilt manual tilt motors up from inside the boat. It levers on the hood of the motor to make it easier to tilt them up. I wouldn't want to try it on this big of a motor though!
loosening that same bolt head should allow you to lift it. It will need to be loosened pretty far to do so and might take a couple people lifting on it to get it in the right position.
Thanks, 91 mercury was all the way down, used the manual to get to up just enough for the actuator to work, saved my weekend of fishing with the kids!

Thanks for sharing. Excellent presentation.
Thank you for the kind words, and for watching! Hopefully it'll help save someone some headache who watches!
Helpfull, thanks!
Happy to help! Hoping this one saves someone some headache!
Thanks! Forgot to tilt mine done before gutting the electrical prior to renovation; I thought I was gonna have to work around it!
Do that all the time and have to hook a battery up to use the switch on the side of the motor. If no switch there this is the next best way!!!
Thanks Had my trim motor go bad. This was a life saver. Johnson was very similar. You have any tricks for a stuck pivot pip on the hydraulic arm? Nee to get that loose to get the back bolt on the motor.
Glad this was helpful! Digging into hydraulic trim and tilt stuff goes beyond my scope of knowledge, sorry!

EXACTLY what I needed to know!! Thanks!!

Thank you!!!!!! My 135 Mercury Mad Max failed to come up when checking thigs out. Yikes! that's heavy!
That is a very heavy motor to lift manually!!! Glad the video helped you out!
Hey Tom a have a mercury 150 outboard on my 2017 22 Suntracker thanks for your videos
Great boat and motor combo!! That’s gotta be a blast. Thanks for watching!!
appreciate the help!
Happy to help! Thanks for leaving a comment!!
Will you have to do anything after this such as priming or bleeding the system?

@@tomspontoons Unfortunately. It's time to change the pump so that'll give me an excuse to take it in and let THEM do it. lol
Very nice! Having an issue with my 1993 Evinrude 120! I can't lift it up, even with the manual release. Maybe I need a helper?

CHeers! Found mine lower down on Port side. Why do these things come loose? Vibration I guess but shows it should be part of a service.
Glad you could locate it and tighten it up!
thanks for this video it saved my trip. but again the trim button on console and motor do nothing when pushed???
So glad it helped you out!
I can use this manual if the boat is in the water?

Unfortunately that’s when I would be taking it to a local servicing marina to take a look.

Hi I have a 150hp mercury outbord that the trim tilt is all the way down and the release valve screw is striped,so how do I get to lift the engine.
Yikes! Are you using a standard screw driver or a MASSIVE flat head one? I'm not really sure what your options would be other than maybe draining the fluid from it so it loses pressure. Not even sure that would work on all outboards.
Can I do this trick while the boat is in the water?
Yes, but remember that with the trim/tilt disabled your motor can kick up out of the water if you hit reverse with much throttle.
Mine is froze I’ve tried multiple large screw drivers I think I’ll use a socket drive next!!
Oh no! The manual release bolt?
I have a115 hp Evinrude Etec 2006. Trim won't work and it's stuck in the down position. Also on a lift in the canal....
That’s not such an easy fix! You’ve gotta get that on the trailer and to the shop unfortunately.
My suzuki 2017 DF140 doesnt work on either the center console or the side on the outboard/ What vould that be?
I'd check the trim/tilt solenoid and fuses on the motor first
screw is undone will the trim work on button while screw undone thanks
No, the screw releases the pressure of the hydraulics so the hydraulic motor will run, but the trim/tilt won’t move. Great question

I have a 85 horsepower Evinrude and I can't get the back plate to come down to release the
I'm not sure on that model. Is it an integrated trim/tilt like this motor or is the tilt unit off to the side of the motor?
