does anyone have any recommendations about where to find this size of tank?? I've been researching and looking, but I cant seem to find one that is large enough?
hey I’m going to be a new uromastyx owner once I’m recovered from surgery, and I have a old 4x2x2 pvc enclosure and I was wondering for a uromastyx could I just use a deep heat progetor and I know of course a uvb, but is it alright for just a deep heat progector 80 watt if not how do I make another spot for a bulb because my enclosure has one on the left?
I would strongly recommend having some visible light where they basking spot is too, like some sort of halogen. Similar to mine where they are right next to eachother.
I'm having serious tail shed issues I've had hulk over a year and he still hasn't had a complete tail shed . Once a month I soak him in warm water brush his tail with a soft toothbrush and then rud in coconut oil. His temps are on point 2 uvb lights in his cage which is 24 x24x72 inches and he is on play sand and rocks and tile
THank you for your time and experience. I am prepping for my first Uro. I believe bigger is better when it comes to terrarium size, however, will a Uro utilize a mutli-level environment with multiple basking spot? (i.e. a 62" L x 36" H x 24" W with a split level over one half of the cage. like a Rabbit hutch?
As long as there is a lot of opportunity for it to get up there, and you can adequately heat the enclosure (challenging with an open top), they will definitely use the full enclosure
@@MikeTytula ok, thanks. My Animal Plastics T8 is only 12" high so I MIGHT just skip the metal boxes OR hope that I can find some that are very short in height.
So any tips to tame wild caught I paid a good amount for them just didn’t realize what that Ment, I walk him theu my hands a lot the orange male I got is very tame but just a lil skidish when warm the yellow male tho is chaos
Can someone help me, I'm new to this heat thing so does the thermostat automatically keep the enclosure to the temperature I set or must I do it manually
So a 50 gallon (long) tank is ok for my uromastyx? Just got the little guy and he doesn't seem to be liking the 10 gallon which is what the store had him in. He doesn't move around alot he sleeps alot and hides in his rock..is that normal?
50g is too small of a tank unless you have a custom one, and even then they are small. They are super narrow (only 12" deep normally), and not well suited to uros. Mostly likely too cool in his tank.
I always had a rock below the main basking bulb. Easy to check the rock temp, they'll heat up to a point and remain consistent, and helps with spreading that temperature through the Uro's whole body.
I have a 36x18x18 but I find that it’s glass so it’s hard to hold heat and I want to upgrade to a 4x2x2 because my uromastyx moves around a lot and I think he needs more room
I know its a old video, but any tips on what to get for my "future" Uromastyx. I have a 6x2x2 tank currently and want to get it setup before getting him/her or both :)
PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME...I am so confused. Is it possible to use the inkbird thermostat for 2 bulbs? (Ceramic heater and basking bulb) Also, does it work with any bulb? If it does not support two bulbs then can I get 2 thermostats and use one for each?
Ok...so I really hope someone sees this soon but I am planning on just getting one thermostat and attaching it to my basking bulb only and just leaving my ceramic heat emitter on all day. I think it’ll work but I’m not 100% sure. Also, for night time I have the option of using a different ceramic heat emitter or using a night time bulb (I just found it on petco not sure if it’s enough for a Uromastyx.) Any recommendations?
You need to have thermostat on both the bulb and the CHE. If you are setting them both to the same temp, then you can run both bulbs on one unit. Definitely no light bulbs at night. If you must, you can use the CHE at night as well but I would have a separate night temperature. This can be completeled by using the Exo terra 600W thermostat
Mike Tytula oh ok sorry for bothering so much but just one thing, so I can connect the CHE and the basking bulb to the thermostat at the same time? And I don’t think that the basking bulb alone would be able to get my enclosure up to the right temps for the Uromastyx so that’s why I plan on having both so is there a way I can do that on the thermostat?
if you breed a yellow and red is there a possibility of BOTH colours showing up on the offspring? That would be incredible and would definitely prove it was a captive bred
I have owned many reptiles through the years, but there is something I've never seen before. Every morning my uromastyx wakes wakes up and does his business then he squirts a big flood. Is peeing excessive for uromastyx normal?
@@MikeTytula Thanks for the info!. I live in south east asia so the humidity is always around 70% at least. I placed an hygrometer on the hotter side of the tank and noticed the heat actually reduced my humidity to 45%. the cooler side is always 70%. So i figured if i have to turn on the lights 24h to help reduce humidity. The store that i got this Uro never turn off the basking light and UVB for his Uro enclosure. is that healthy for the URO? if he goes to his hiding place its all dark too since i have a pretty big stone for her to hide flat. appreciate your help.
Not that is a terrible idea! They require a night period, all lights should be off for 10-12 hours a day. I wouldn't be too worried about the higher humidity at night time.
How do you travel in the car with a Uromastyx? Is it much different from traveling with other reptiles? I might be getting one from someone soon and will be in the car with her enclosure for an hour to an hour and a half.
Pretty much the same as all the other reptiles. I would pack a cooler with a warm bag of water and wrap it in a towel to prevent direct contact. But that'll keep the inside of the cooler a bit warmer. Depends where you are living though honestly.
Recently got a Red Uromastyx from a Reptile show. But he's been spending all his time in his Cool side hide. Doesn't want to come out to Bask (in the 130s F) or eat. I left him some dried flowers in a bowl for him and covered the sides of the glass tank so that he feels more comfortable coming out. And so that my cat can't see him. I can't get to him either cause the hide I made from excavator clay so I would need to destroy it.. I've heard it can take some weeks for him to get accustomed to the change. Any help would be appreciated
If it's an adult chances are he's WC which could certainly take longer for him to acclimatize. If he is a wild caught adult I would also consider bringing him to the vet to scan for parasites because that is quite common.
I got one about a year ago from someone on kijji and they didn’t give him proper care and he had tail rot (now healed) and I would like to give him the proper care but I only have 2 domes and can hold 2 bulbs each what bulbs would you recommend to get the proper heat with only two? The other dome is used for uvb and ceramic bulb. His maximum heat in the middle of the day is around 90 f
Frankly, I'd recommend purchasing some new lighting options. A linear T5HO bulb for the UVB and then you would have two spots for heat alone. Also, the wood enclosure really helps retain the heat, so between the wood tank and a thermostat you can achieve hot enough basking temps with only two relatively low wattage bulbs.
@@MikeTytula hey I make a rock crevice underneath basking area and I keep sticking dandelion in there I think they eating it one has gained weight I keep them at 85 coldest spot and 130 hot spot
Hello, I’m interested in buying Ornate Uros off off BackwaterReptiles they are listed as captive bred. They sell juveniles and offer 100% live guarantee. I wanted to know would I only feed it vegetation?
Before buying one I would strongly recommend you make sure you can answer that question... Backwater reptiles is notorious for providing terrible quality animals, so be careful.
How long does it take for a new uromastyx to accumulate? I just got one yesterday and he's still clawing at the tank like he wants to escape. I have a 75 gallon and got the basking area to 100-110 F finally and seeds and fresh greens for him and he hasn't eaten yet :(
That basically spot is about 30-40 degrees too cold, it should be around 130-140. It could take them several weeks or even months to fully settle in. Depends on so many factors like tank setup, the area the tank is in, etc.
Hi there. I have a growing juvenile Uromastyx. He eats normally but as if a day or two he sleeps almost the entire day and doesnt come out much. He is in a 20 gallon long tank with 100 watt suspended above and a zoo med uvb bulb as well... Could it be temperature? I had him on proso millet but removed it bc he was eating it often. Pls help.
So do you have to change out the substrate every now and then or just spot clean? If you do need to change out the substrate, how often should you do it?
Mike Tytula, so I've had my ornata for almost a year now, I got him when he was 3 months. So he is almost a year old and is about 5 inches. I feel like he isn't growing, but he seems to be very healthy he runs around all day and is very aware of his surroundings. I feed him boc choy nearly every day and I have him on millet seeds and also have plenty of hard surface for him to walk on also. His light keeps his basking around 120 and the rest of the tank ranges from 100 to 90.
Question here! I've got a (presumed, as he's only about 7 inches including tail) juvenile uromastyx geyri that came with a 40 gallon breeder terrarium and some basics. I've been phasing out his older stuff for more natural things since they seem to entice him to explore more (swapping plastics for wood, pure sand for play sand/soil mix, adding new seeds to his millet mix, etc.) and I want to get him a bigger home as soon as I can. Are there any suggestions that won't break the bank? I know 4×2×2 is the minimum recommended for real uro adulthood happiness b/c bigger space means more roam to explore and exhibit natural behavior, but there's a bunch of different enclosures out there at that size and I want something with a glass (or clear acrylic) back so he can still see the sunshine coming through for him every morning (he still has his proper heating and lighting to go with it but I've noticed he definitely is more active with the sunlight included, he runs straight to his basking spot). Any suggestions? All the nice enclosures I've seen online are these $300+ pvc or half-glass things that keep the backs solid so there's no sunshine coming in and I don't want that for him 😕
Honestly because of the insulating properties of wood enclosures I don't recommend using anything besides a wood tank or maybe PVC. It is challenging to heat the enclosure hot enough when the entire top is screen it. If you are providing proper lighting for the uro it shouldn't matter that there is sun coming through the windows. It might offer some mild heat but other than that it's not really doing anything for him. If you keep an eye on a local buy and sell there are typically wood and PVC tanks that come available, but expect to pay for it. Like you mentioned it's not uncommon to find them for 300$+.
@@MikeTytula He has a full UVB bar and backup ceramic heat emitter lighting (and some spare bulbs and heat mats I keep as a reserve in case of power outage issues). The lid is modified to be insulated (there's gaps for ventilation, but I live in a dry area already and the tank has a small dehumidifier in a corner). So far the temp gun says everything is in normal range (basking spot reaches ~120-122°F, cool side is ~85° F, etc.). He eats like a champ and his bathroom habits are like clockwork. I honestly do think he likes the extra sunshine, though. He zooms out of his burrow the second the sun peeks through so he can sit on his favourite basking rock. I'll look into finding him a nice wood enclosure, though, since I want him as cozy as possible. I just wish they weren't so expensive, but I guess you pay for quality of life?
Awesome videos both this and the first setup. I'm looking at getting a uro as my son's first reptile hopefully at our local expo in October. Any suggestions on how to keep the heat in on a mesh top 40 gallon glass setup? I plan on making an enclosure after a few months so long as things go well and should be able to insulate that properly since it will be a wood enclosure.
The 40 gallons are challenging to heat. In terms of purchasing an actual uro, make sure it's a baby, or from a reputable captive producer because at most reptile expo any uros that are still available are WC not CB.
@@MikeTytula Thanks for the info. Our local expo doesn't look to have any uros so I will have to get one shipped from a breeder. To solve the tank I'm just making a wooden hood for the top to mount lights into that way my kids don't tip them over on accident and this way less heat loss
What soil do I use? I got uros 2 days ago and the people told me to get sand for them. I bought sand but I feel like they need more than just sand. I read online that sand, soil, and clay for their substrate?
My main concern is power outages due to severe weather. My first Fall here, a ten day power outage resulted in no air conditioning for a week. My concern is that the resulting indoor humidity could severely sicken a desert climate animal (it's not too great for h humans, eith).er
I strongly believe a lot of desert species we dont provide enough humidity for, or at least don't give them the opportunity to have a microclimate of high humidity so a humidity spike would probably do no harm.
Do you put the thermostat on the basking zone or the cool zone? I know that summer and winter my surface temps have yet to be too high so I have had it on the cool side adjusted to the maximum/ideal cool zone temps(around 90f) in the past however I am buying a second ceramic heat emitter and changing my set up a bit so this question is definitely important in that. Thank you very much for any advice. I really appreciate what you do here I've owned an orange saharan uromastyx for about 7 years and the last time I checked there wasn't any solid youtube community for uromastyx. I'm looking forward to putting in more research and upgrading his set up n the time to come!
You want it on your basking spot because otherwise you would be heating up the cool side as hot as it can go, and god knows how hot that would make your basking spot.
My male uromastyx is super healthy but started doing a weird head twitching thing while sleeping. He is eating normal and normal poops. He is in a 30 gallon enclosure with sand substrate, 120 basking area, 70 cool side, very social, and is on spring mix diet with occasional goodies. Im not noticing any signs of MBD but that is a concern of mine. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!!
May Madness okay the first time this species actually came across my radar was actually when you introduce them to me and I've actually come across this species of animal quite a bit now in the last so many months I've seen them at a couple different stores Expose and I put some more interest threw away and they seem very interesting and they seem like a really cool lizard to get into it I personally don't have any lizards at this point I would like to venture that way at some point but at this moment in time I do not have any lizards only python snakes but seems very cool really enjoy it I love the knowledge that you put out great start to the madness and I'll catch you next time
I'm from a country near equator, our temperature at summer usually go up to 32 centigrade, and winter will be around 15 centigrade, so how much heat will you recommend me for my uromastyx ,btw my uromastyx type is Thomasi only one month. what type of sand should I purchase looking forward for your guidance!! thx!!
Also I've an Animal Plastics T8 pvc cage (48x24x12). What wattage of bulbs do you recommend? For the basking bulb and the heat emitter. (MIGHT get both from Arcadia)
great video, but im curious about the temperature at night? would it be okay to let it drop to room temperature with the lights off or should there be additional heating like a heat mat?

hey I’m going to be a new uromastyx owner once I’m recovered from surgery, and I have a old 4x2x2 pvc enclosure and I was wondering for a uromastyx could I just use a deep heat progetor and I know of course a uvb, but is it alright for just a deep heat progector 80 watt if not how do I make another spot for a bulb because my enclosure has one on the left?
I would strongly recommend having some visible light where they basking spot is too, like some sort of halogen. Similar to mine where they are right next to eachother.
Can I send pictures and get your opinions on what to change to what I have on hand and as someone looking into getting into the hobby?
Feel free to send me some photos on ig
How do you clean your rocks before putting inside?
I don't... maybe just a quick wash with really hot water.
Just increase the humidity in the tank! I mist my tank 1-2 times a week.
@@MikeTytula thank you.
No problem!
I just got a rescue nigerian red from a friend who is moving n i have no idea what to feed him he looks meek and I want too help him be healthy again
Is the rest of his care good? There is a ton of different things you can feed them.
My tank is about 20 gal. is that big enough for a single juvenile?
Definitely not. The absolute bare minimum is like a 40 breeder.
more about the Substrate, the sand can get quite pricey, so if I only use soil and clay will it affect the uros in a good or bad way, or not at all.
Uhhhh I guess try it and see how they do
Could I just screw in the porcelain bulb sockets in the roof, or do I HAVE to connect them to metal electrical boxes, like you did in the vid?
I mean if you are drilling holes in the tank for the wires to come out, then no you don't need the metal, but I recommend it.
Truthfully, there is a chance that it never will actually become tame.
Great vid as always!!
Thanks man!
Can someone help me, I'm new to this heat thing so does the thermostat automatically keep the enclosure to the temperature I set or must I do it manually
@The Young Naturalist thank you
Glad some of the other viewers could give you an answer before me
So a 50 gallon (long) tank is ok for my uromastyx? Just got the little guy and he doesn't seem to be liking the 10 gallon which is what the store had him in. He doesn't move around alot he sleeps alot and hides in his rock..is that normal?
50g is too small of a tank unless you have a custom one, and even then they are small. They are super narrow (only 12" deep normally), and not well suited to uros. Mostly likely too cool in his tank.
What uvb bulb fixture do I use for this uvb bulb
Arcadia proT5 is the best option out there
May madness is starting off strong!
hahah I spent like 6 hours editing that video :D
I always had a rock below the main basking bulb. Easy to check the rock temp, they'll heat up to a point and remain consistent, and helps with spreading that temperature through the Uro's whole body.
Indeed it does, the ability to hold the heat depends on the kind of rock.
I have a 36x18x18 but I find that it’s glass so it’s hard to hold heat and I want to upgrade to a 4x2x2 because my uromastyx moves around a lot and I think he needs more room
I completely agree!
Mike, what uro species is the largest after the Egyptian?
Honestly, not sure off the top of my head!
Been a dream pet for 5 years now. If everything goes smoothly in a year or 2 I'll be able to have one! So cute! They remind me of dinosaurs!
That's awesome to hear! They are fantastic little beasts!
I know its a old video, but any tips on what to get for my "future" Uromastyx. I have a 6x2x2 tank currently and want to get it setup before getting him/her or both :)
Rocks, you can make a full background if you want. There's a bunch you should grab first, like the heating and lighting.
I was looking for a uromastyx, where can any places i can find one for a reasonable price?
Where are you located?
Mike Tytula Thanks for responding so fast. So I would only need one of the 600w thermostats?
Well one turns on during the day and the other one turns on during the night. Just do some research on both and decide which best fits your needs
Thanks for the good info but I’m looking for one to get but I don’t know where to get it. Thanks for getting back to me 😊
Depends where you are located
Gracias. I enjoyed the video. Keep it up! I agree a lot with your care philosophy! I m also a naturalistic reptile owner.
nice man!
I was told they need UVA and UVB. Is this true?
That is correct
if you breed a yellow and red is there a possibility of BOTH colours showing up on the offspring? That would be incredible and would definitely prove it was a captive bred
Typically it's one or the other
I have owned many reptiles through the years, but there is something I've never seen before. Every morning my uromastyx wakes wakes up and does his business then he squirts a big flood. Is peeing excessive for uromastyx normal?
Most likely just getting a lot of fluids!
Where do you find enclosures like the one the uros have in this video?
Had them custom built.
@@MikeTytula do you have any recommendations for tutorials on how to build the enclosures?
I’m sure there are some good ones out there. I personally haven’t found them yet though.
Hi. Can you tell me if i have to turn off all the light at night? Or maybe set the basking light to dimmer. Thank you
Everything should go off at night time. If you need supplemental heat then a ceramic heat emitter
Do you know if they prefer to live in pairs/groups or solitary?
Solitary is fine, living in groups can be done if the owner is constantly monitoring then and ready to separate them if need be.
@@MikeTytula he was a captive bred. About a Year Old.
Oh okay gotcha. I would just give him some time then
I got one about a year ago from someone on kijji and they didn’t give him proper care and he had tail rot (now healed) and I would like to give him the proper care but I only have 2 domes and can hold 2 bulbs each what bulbs would you recommend to get the proper heat with only two? The other dome is used for uvb and ceramic bulb. His maximum heat in the middle of the day is around 90 f
Frankly, I'd recommend purchasing some new lighting options. A linear T5HO bulb for the UVB and then you would have two spots for heat alone. Also, the wood enclosure really helps retain the heat, so between the wood tank and a thermostat you can achieve hot enough basking temps with only two relatively low wattage bulbs.
@@MikeTytula ok thanks I’ll look into the bulb. I’m also thinking about getting a chunk of clay/ceramic for him to bask on
Or just some rocks would also work!
Hey why I have 3 they don’t come out how can I make them stop hiding and come out to eat and bask
It's likely just the time of year honestly
@@MikeTytula hey I make a rock crevice underneath basking area and I keep sticking dandelion in there I think they eating it one has gained weight I keep them at 85 coldest spot and 130 hot spot
Im planning on getting an uromastyx and wondering where i can get a pretty good sized tank, also this video was really helpful!
Look for PVC or a wooden tank
I think a 40 gallon should be a minimum I’m going to get one but it’s mesh led is it it okay for rn? I already ordered my baby!
I think 40 is too small for them personally. It's tough to get proper temps with a mesh lid but it is doable.
@@MikeTytula will it be okay until I can find a wooden tank ?
Hello, I’m interested in buying Ornate Uros off off BackwaterReptiles they are listed as captive bred. They sell juveniles and offer 100% live guarantee. I wanted to know would I only feed it vegetation?
Before buying one I would strongly recommend you make sure you can answer that question... Backwater reptiles is notorious for providing terrible quality animals, so be careful.
Maybe a verry stupid question but is there no risk of fire in such a wooden enclosure in the temperatures setup you have ?
No this is treated wood and stuff so I'm not worries
Are they a good beginner reptile?
If you can get proper heating down, yes. But most don’t get the proper heating.
Hi, does the Arcadia product website that you linked in the description ship to the USA?
Ya I believe so, but it depends on the product.
@@MikeTytula Thank you so much i have been looking everywhere for a place that ships Arcadia products to the USA. Subscribing.

Pls help.
What is the temperature of his basking spot?
Mike Tytula the temperature of his basking spot is between 110-120F
Too cold for them
Mike Tytula what do you recommend I do? Please help!
So do you have to change out the substrate every now and then or just spot clean? If you do need to change out the substrate, how often should you do it?
I would strongly recommend spot cleaning and replacing it totally every few months depending on how dirty it’s getting
Correct me if im wrong but i thought you never put 2 together even opposite sex..i see you do it tho..please explain your process
As a general recommendation, single housing is always best.
Do you know anything about ornata uromastyx?
they are very similar to the geyri, but what did you want to know?
Ya you pay for that but also durability and build quality.
Sooooo i need some help before i get a uro like how big of a tank do I need for 1 uro and the heat lamps i need for them.
Really for just 1 uro i thought a 20 gallon would be good
For one uro I would do no less than the size I have for my two. 4x2x2feet
Do you think I could use that temp gun for an aquarium? Or do you know if it will read water temp acurrately
Probably? But I would have a second probe one just to see how accurate the temp really is from the gun
Mike Tytula I picked up a probe one yesterday, thanks for the reply!
what is your opinion on excavator claw tank set ups?
Depends how the tank is setup?
What soil do I use? I got uros 2 days ago and the people told me to get sand for them. I bought sand but I feel like they need more than just sand. I read online that sand, soil, and clay for their substrate?
I use cococoir and sand currently.
@@MikeTytula okay thank you about how much sand and soil do you use?
I have a couple uromastyx tank setups on my channel if you are interested
My Nigerian Uros has some shedding around its mouth and it looks stuck, should I soak it or remove it?
Depends on how long it's been there for?
Idk I just got it 2 days ago, and it came like that
I would give it a couple days to see if it comes off naturally, if not I would give it a soak and try and remove it.
Where can you get them ooohhh how about rescuing the,m can that work to ?
If you can find them, go for it
Is a 36x13x13 big enough for one? Cage wise and for the cool side what do you recommend?
Honestly even for one, I wouldn't do any less than a 4'x2'x18"
Mike Tytula alright then, thank you. I just want to make sure i do everything right. I know you went over it already, sorry.
Better do things right from the get go, than make a mistake and cause harm to the animal
How do I overcome challenges of raising a uromastyx in humid Florida? Air conditioned indoors at 74 degrees cons
Solid wood tank and experiment with heating before you decide to get the animal.
@@MikeTytula Thank you, Mike!
@@MikeTytula Thank you , Mike.
Thanks!!
Please send me a message on Instagram if you have questions still :)
May Madness okay the first time this species actually came across my radar was actually when you introduce them to me and I've actually come across this species of animal quite a bit now in the last so many months I've seen them at a couple different stores Expose and I put some more interest threw away and they seem very interesting and they seem like a really cool lizard to get into it I personally don't have any lizards at this point I would like to venture that way at some point but at this moment in time I do not have any lizards only python snakes but seems very cool really enjoy it I love the knowledge that you put out great start to the madness and I'll catch you next time
Cheers man, thanks for watching! They are really awesome :)
Where did you get your rocks?
Depends where you are located
Are these Uromastyx geyri?
Indeed
I'm from a country near equator, our temperature at summer usually go up to 32 centigrade, and winter will be around 15 centigrade, so how much heat will you recommend me for my uromastyx ,btw my uromastyx type is Thomasi only one month. what type of sand should I purchase
looking forward for your guidance!! thx!!
Whatever heat you need to reach a proper basking temp, you might hve to buy a few different bulbs and test.
Do you build your own enclosure or do buy them from someone?
I bought the wood ones and built the custom glass ones
Also I've an Animal Plastics T8 pvc cage (48x24x12). What wattage of bulbs do you recommend? For the basking bulb and the heat emitter. (MIGHT get both from Arcadia)
80watt DHP and 50-75watt halogen
