Great great vid as usual with a lots of informations! :) Shame that in France, we can't keep these guys without a permit... The fact that they need two basking lamps is very interesting and could be also applied to big species of monitor. So I did my research and added a second basking lamp (halogen) and now it is perfect, his whole body is heated.

They look like 48Lx18WX12H, but you stated (I think)48Lx24wx24H and not to house a uromastyx in anything smaller than 36Lx18Wx18H. Im not a builder and can't find one to purchase at that size with or without front opening doors. Are yours custom built, if not where did you find them? 75 gallons are 48LX18WX18H and its hard to keep temp above 120-125 with 18H how are keeping above 125 24in in height? I have a Red Geyri un a 75gallon and want my beard in the same size tank, just needing to maximize my dollar with the housing while considering space and aesthetics.
The wood ones are custom built. They are super easy to throw together, home depot will make most of the cuts for you, all you need is a drill or a screw driver. hey I’m going to be a new uromastyx owner once I’m recovered from surgery, and I have a old 4x2x2 pvc enclosure and I was wondering for a uromastyx could I just use a deep heat progetor and I know of course a uvb, but is it alright for just a deep heat progector 80 watt if not how do I make another spot for a bulb because my enclosure has one on the left?
I would strongly recommend having some visible light where they basking spot is too, like some sort of halogen. Similar to mine where they are right next to eachother.
Do you put the thermostat on the basking zone or the cool zone? I know that summer and winter my surface temps have yet to be too high so I have had it on the cool side adjusted to the maximum/ideal cool zone temps(around 90f) in the past however I am buying a second ceramic heat emitter and changing my set up a bit so this question is definitely important in that. Thank you very much for any advice. I really appreciate what you do here I've owned an orange saharan uromastyx for about 7 years and the last time I checked there wasn't any solid youtube community for uromastyx. Uromastyx are on my dream Reptile list for the longest time I've been wanting a Uromastyx or a couple I currently have 1 soon to be 2 African Fat Tail Geckos i get my next African Fat Tail Gecko after her custom enclosure ships
THank you for your time and experience. I am prepping for my first Uro. I believe bigger is better when it comes to terrarium size, however, will a Uro utilize a mutli-level environment with multiple basking spot? (i.e. a 62" L x 36" H x 24" W with a split level over one half of the cage. like a Rabbit hutch?
As long as there is a lot of opportunity for it to get up there, and you can adequately heat the enclosure (challenging with an open top), they will definitely use the full enclosure
great video, but im curious about the temperature at night? would it be okay to let it drop to room temperature with the lights off or should there be additional heating like a heat mat?
Hey! Just found your channel. If I could email you about Uromastyx Care id love to be able to. Me and my GF keep several intermediate/advanced reptiles, but my little brother got Yellow Nigerian Uromastyx! I’m kind of unfamiliar with them and his seems to have very low energy/lounge around and is very skinny. Vet said he’s just dehydrated so we gave him a water bowl and he drank (I know most don’t need actual water bowls), but he’s still very lethargic. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
Hey mike just acquired a 75 gallon tank would a uromastyx be comfortable in it? It’s pretty much 4x2x2 and I’m building a basking spot/hide on the hot side with two others amongst the tank Keep up the awesome work and have a good day
Lol that’s not true, 75 gallons are 48 18 21... not a 4x2x2 those are 120 gallons. I would try and make a lid to keep the heat in, but a single uro would be okay in a 75.
if you breed a yellow and red is there a possibility of BOTH colours showing up on the offspring? That would be incredible and would definitely prove it was a captive bred
Awesome videos both this and the first setup. I'm looking at getting a uro as my son's first reptile hopefully at our local expo in October. Any suggestions on how to keep the heat in on a mesh top 40 gallon glass setup? I plan on making an enclosure after a few months so long as things go well and should be able to insulate that properly since it will be a wood enclosure.
The 40 gallons are challenging to heat. In terms of purchasing an actual uro, make sure it's a baby, or from a reputable captive producer because at most reptile expo any uros that are still available are WC not CB.
@@MikeTytula Thanks for the info. Our local expo doesn't look to have any uros so I will have to get one shipped from a breeder. To solve the tank I'm just making a wooden hood for the top to mount lights into that way my kids don't tip them over on accident and this way less heat loss
I know its a old video, but any tips on what to get for my "future" Uromastyx. I have a 6x2x2 tank currently and want to get it setup before getting him/her or both :)
Hey Man thanks for the videos. We just got one 2 weeks ago. He did really good at first now he's not moving around much. They told me to make it hotter and his basking spot is about 110f. He hasn't wanted to eat in like 3 days I'm worried about him. Any tips to help him get back to normal! Thanks again.
So do you have to change out the substrate every now and then or just spot clean? If you do need to change out the substrate, how often should you do it?
Mike Tytula Is there any sand you would recommend over the others? I know you don’t typically recommend it but I’ve watched so many videos saying sand and so many saying no sand I don’t really know anymore lol
Hey man I’m a new subscriber and I just got my first pair of uromastyx the exact same as yours and I was wondering if a 300 gallon tank is alright for these guys
How do you travel in the car with a Uromastyx? Is it much different from traveling with other reptiles? I might be getting one from someone soon and will be in the car with her enclosure for an hour to an hour and a half.
Pretty much the same as all the other reptiles. I would pack a cooler with a warm bag of water and wrap it in a towel to prevent direct contact. But that'll keep the inside of the cooler a bit warmer. Depends where you are living though honestly.
I have owned many reptiles through the years, but there is something I've never seen before. Every morning my uromastyx wakes wakes up and does his business then he squirts a big flood. Is peeing excessive for uromastyx normal?
I'm from a country near equator, our temperature at summer usually go up to 32 centigrade, and winter will be around 15 centigrade, so how much heat will you recommend me for my uromastyx ,btw my uromastyx type is Thomasi only one month. what type of sand should I purchase looking forward for your guidance!! thx!!
So a 50 gallon (long) tank is ok for my uromastyx? Just got the little guy and he doesn't seem to be liking the 10 gallon which is what the store had him in. He doesn't move around alot he sleeps alot and hides in his rock..is that normal?
50g is too small of a tank unless you have a custom one, and even then they are small. They are super narrow (only 12" deep normally), and not well suited to uros. Mostly likely too cool in his tank.
How long does it take for a new uromastyx to accumulate? I just got one yesterday and he's still clawing at the tank like he wants to escape. I have a 75 gallon and got the basking area to 100-110 F finally and seeds and fresh greens for him and he hasn't eaten yet :(
That basically spot is about 30-40 degrees too cold, it should be around 130-140. It could take them several weeks or even months to fully settle in. Depends on so many factors like tank setup, the area the tank is in, etc.
Hello! I know you said you respond to every comment so I think I’ll give it a shot! Any advice on getting a picky uro to eat new foods? My guy has no problem eating beans, but will only eat dandelion greans and flowers besides that. When I give him other greens and veggies they go uneaten. How can I encourage him to eat other foods?
So any tips to tame wild caught I paid a good amount for them just didn’t realize what that Ment, I walk him theu my hands a lot the orange male I got is very tame but just a lil skidish when warm the yellow male tho is chaos
My male uromastyx is super healthy but started doing a weird head twitching thing while sleeping. He is eating normal and normal poops. He is in a 30 gallon enclosure with sand substrate, 120 basking area, 70 cool side, very social, and is on spring mix diet with occasional goodies. Im not noticing any signs of MBD but that is a concern of mine. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!!
I have a 36x18x18 but I find that it’s glass so it’s hard to hold heat and I want to upgrade to a 4x2x2 because my uromastyx moves around a lot and I think he needs more room
Can someone help me, I'm new to this heat thing so does the thermostat automatically keep the enclosure to the temperature I set or must I do it manually
Mike Tytula, so I've had my ornata for almost a year now, I got him when he was 3 months. So he is almost a year old and is about 5 inches. I feel like he isn't growing, but he seems to be very healthy he runs around all day and is very aware of his surroundings. I feed him boc choy nearly every day and I have him on millet seeds and also have plenty of hard surface for him to walk on also. His light keeps his basking around 120 and the rest of the tank ranges from 100 to 90.
I was recently told baby uromastyx should not eat to many insects if any because it speeds up their grow rate too much. Is this true? Also thanks for the video it is very helpful
When I hatched mine clutch of babies I offered them crickets twice, and neither time were they interested. I would stick with the bulk of their diet being greens, with a cricket feeding maaaaybe once a month

Uromastyx are on my dream Reptile list for the longest time I've been wanting a Uromastyx or a couple I currently have 1 soon to be 2 African Fat Tail Geckos i get my next African Fat Tail Gecko after her custom enclosure ships
Awesome! That’s incredible to hear!
@@MikeTytula thank you.
No problem!
If i live in a hot city, like cancun with temperartures between 28 to 35 C i still need something else for the regular spot?
If they are inside your home, yes. Most likely you are running AC to keep it below 35ºC inside.
Mike, what uro species is the largest after the Egyptian?
Honestly, not sure off the top of my head!
great video, but im curious about the temperature at night? would it be okay to let it drop to room temperature with the lights off or should there be additional heating like a heat mat?
It depends how much of a night time drop you are providing at night
Thanks!
Likely too cool of a basking spot, as well as being wild caught I would probably get it dewormed.
Do you build your own enclosure or do buy them from someone?
I bought the wood ones and built the custom glass ones
more about the Substrate, the sand can get quite pricey, so if I only use soil and clay will it affect the uros in a good or bad way, or not at all.
Uhhhh I guess try it and see how they do
Hey mike just acquired a 75 gallon tank would a uromastyx be comfortable in it? It’s pretty much 4x2x2 and I’m building a basking spot/hide on the hot side with two others amongst the tank
Keep up the awesome work and have a good day
Lol that’s not true, 75 gallons are 48 18 21... not a 4x2x2 those are 120 gallons. I would try and make a lid to keep the heat in, but a single uro would be okay in a 75.
if you breed a yellow and red is there a possibility of BOTH colours showing up on the offspring? That would be incredible and would definitely prove it was a captive bred
Typically it's one or the other
Great video bro gave me some ideas I have an orange one
Nice man! Shoot me pics of your setup when you are done.
@@MikeTytula ok I will 😊😊👍👍
Awesome videos both this and the first setup.
Wait but please someone awnser when there babies can I just feed them vegetation and seed or do I have to feed live feeders
Mine didn’t take to live food at all. Worth a shot though
Would you recommend starting a single baby in a 4x2 or something smaller for a bit? Also what substrate is best/safest for babies? Thank so much!
Shoot me a message on instagram, it's a lot easier to have a conversation on there.
How do you clean your rocks before putting inside?
I don't... maybe just a quick wash with really hot water.
I know its a old video, but any tips on what to get for my "future" Uromastyx. I have a 6x2x2 tank currently and want to get it setup before getting him/her or both :)
Rocks, you can make a full background if you want. There's a bunch you should grab first, like the heating and lighting.
So what you're saying is a Uromastyx is like the Wayne Gretzky of lizards and a Bearded Dragon is like the Keith Gretzky of lizards
Correct
Can I send pictures and get your opinions on what to change to what I have on hand and as someone looking into getting into the hobby?
Feel free to send me some photos on ig
Hey Man thanks for the videos. We just got one 2 weeks ago. He did really good at first now he's not moving around much. They told me to make it hotter and his basking spot is about 110f. He hasn't wanted to eat in like 3 days I'm worried about him. Any tips to help him get back to normal! Thanks again.
The basking spot needs to be even hotter.
My tank is about 20 gal. is that big enough for a single juvenile?
Definitely not. The absolute bare minimum is like a 40 breeder.
Do you think uromastyx would be ok on tile? Or would they rather dig?
Great video
Mine love to dig so I would say they should have substrate.
Awesome video. Sadly I do keep my uromastyx in a smaller sized tank. Is there any you would recommend?
The very smallest tank I would keep this species of uro in, is a 36x18x18
I just got a rescue nigerian red from a friend who is moving n i have no idea what to feed him he looks meek and I want too help him be healthy again
Is the rest of his care good? There is a ton of different things you can feed them.
So do you have to change out the substrate every now and then or just spot clean? If you do need to change out the substrate, how often should you do it?
I would strongly recommend spot cleaning and replacing it totally every few months depending on how dirty it’s getting
Great video, the one question I have is why do you not recommend sand?
It really depends on the sand type.
As long as it’s heated properly it would be great for them
How do you clean this enclosure and how often? Also, do you handle your Uros a lot or just leave them alone?
I will spot clean them once a week, and I handle the male fairly often but the female doesn't like human interaction so I just leave her alone.
Most likely just getting a lot of fluids!
I'm from a country near equator, our temperature at summer usually go up to 32 centigrade, and winter will be around 15 centigrade, so how much heat will you recommend me for my uromastyx ,btw my uromastyx type is Thomasi only one month. what type of sand should I purchase
looking forward for your guidance!! thx!!
Whatever heat you need to reach a proper basking temp, you might hve to buy a few different bulbs and test.
Maybe a verry stupid question but is there no risk of fire in such a wooden enclosure in the temperatures setup you have ?
No this is treated wood and stuff so I'm not worries
Is a 36x13x13 big enough for one? Cage wise and for the cool side what do you recommend?
Honestly even for one, I wouldn't do any less than a 4'x2'x18"
Mike Tytula alright then, thank you. I just want to make sure i do everything right. I know you went over it already, sorry.
Better do things right from the get go, than make a mistake and cause harm to the animal
What uvb bulb fixture do I use for this uvb bulb
Arcadia proT5 is the best option out there
I was looking for a uromastyx, where can any places i can find one for a reasonable price?
Where are you located?
Hey Tayla, I don't really have a ton of experience trying to switch food for my uros, but what have you tried so far?
So any tips to tame wild caught I paid a good amount for them just didn’t realize what that Ment, I walk him theu my hands a lot the orange male I got is very tame but just a lil skidish when warm the yellow male tho is chaos
Truthfully, there is a chance that it never will actually become tame.
Thanks!!
Please send me a message on Instagram if you have questions still :)
what do you think about keeping them on excavator clay/ crushed walnut as a substrate?
I wouldn't recommend it
I have a 36x18x18 but I find that it’s glass so it’s hard to hold heat and I want to upgrade to a 4x2x2 because my uromastyx moves around a lot and I think he needs more room
I completely agree!
179F is 80C
You gem
Can someone help me, I'm new to this heat thing so does the thermostat automatically keep the enclosure to the temperature I set or must I do it manually
@The Young Naturalist thank you
Glad some of the other viewers could give you an answer before me
I was told they need UVA and UVB. Is this true?
That is correct
Do you know anything about ornata uromastyx?
they are very similar to the geyri, but what did you want to know?
Mike Tytula, so I've had my ornata for almost a year now, I got him when he was 3 months. So he is almost a year old and is about 5 inches. I feel like he isn't growing, but he seems to be very healthy he runs around all day and is very aware of his surroundings. I feed him boc choy nearly every day and I have him on millet seeds and also have plenty of hard surface for him to walk on also. His light keeps his basking around 120 and the rest of the tank ranges from 100 to 90.
probably not gonna see this but very useful video you have earned my like subscribe and notis on.
Definitely saw it! Thanks for watching and glad I could help!
@@MikeTytula yeah you helped alot being doing alot of research on them but finding it hard to find one what is not wild caught.
Most of them are
@@MikeTytula yeah hopefully more people start breeding them.
That's the goal
I was recently told baby uromastyx should not eat to many insects if any because it speeds up their grow rate too much. Is this true? Also thanks for the video it is very helpful
When I hatched mine clutch of babies I offered them crickets twice, and neither time were they interested. I would stick with the bulk of their diet being greens, with a cricket feeding maaaaybe once a month
Thanks
Are they a good beginner reptile?
If you can get proper heating down, yes. But most don’t get the proper heating.
