RIP John Thaw taken from us 20 years ago this month (february) at the age of 60. For me it's impossible not to hear this without remembering his grouchy voice in those episodes.
Without doubt the finest police TV show ever made. The theme tune a timeless classic. John Thaw and Dennis Waterman simply perfect.. If only London were the same today.
Criminals back then tended to leave innocent members of the public alone. Its was all banks, cash vans, jewellers and the like. The only way the robbers could make a getaway is if their car was faster than the police car. Stockings over the head and a cosh, not some twat knifing you for fun as you walk home or a gang of yobs attacking one person and leaving them for dead.
Totally agree 100% great tv show and theme and if only London was the same today sadly London is finished that's why I'm moving can't wait to see the back of London. Going to Belfast.
Shot in Colet Gardens, Hammersmith W14 where I am right now. If you dont like The Sweeney you can shaaaaat it, or youll be falling dahn a flight a stairs many times my san, lol!!!
Prepare to have your mind blown… when Little Britain parodied the Minder theme tune, Minder had been off the air 14 years. … Next year it will be 14 years since that Little Britain sketch was on TV! That means pretty soon the Little Britain sketch will be closer in time to Minder than to now.
Fab tune, the other version which closes the earlier episodes of the show- slower and more placid with cor anglais and trumpet is haunting but brilliant 😊
When I was a little boy, I watched the show and was excited about two things. The opening credits and John Thaw. He was so cool. Sovereign and determined, he searched for the criminals. And most of the time it was the case that he got hurt a little bit every now and then. For example, in an episode where he was alone on the roof looking for someone and only a waitress from the pub below was on his side. Later ended up in the hospital and discussed with his superior. 🤓
I was 8 years old when the series started, I have watched re run after re run even now in 2020,, watching it takes me back to been a kid for a hour, such happy memories. The Sweeney is the best police TV programme ever made. Perfect casting with John Thaw and Dennis waterman
RIP John Thaw taken from us 20 years ago this month (february) at the age of 60. For me it's impossible not to hear this without remembering his grouchy voice in those episodes.
It's a 1974 Ford Consul GT, powered by a 3.0 V6 Essex engine. It still exists and has been expertly restored in recent years (for more info, search for the reg. no. NHK295M). Without doubt an iconic motor and great that it is in safe hands.
The film of this series is going to suck- they'll probably make it some PC bullshit where Carter will be an open homosexual and Haskins will be a black woman or some bullshit like that. The Sweeny is a classic of it's time and should be left alone.
EXCELLENT...programme, actors in John Thaw and Dennis Waterman(a guy i've always enjoyed watching, in his various roles). What makes this clip even more enjoyable was the Thames TV intro. Fuckin Brilliant post. Thank You. They're on ITV 4 five minutes, can't wait. I was 10 or 11 when the original run was broadcast and i sneakily seen bits n pieces. But mainly i remember the intro when i was told t go t bed LOL.
Great music! Iconic. Even though i was about 8 when this originally came out in 1975 inspired the desire to be a "Copper" your nicked pal! And so it was, Unfortunately Lancashire Constabulary didn't really live up to the "Sweeney" though! Too much back stabbing between Officers and constantly watching your tail, not from the bad guys but from your own supervision and if you've ever been "in the job" you'll know exactly what i'm talking about. Arse lickers and yes men need only apply. Decent lads get bummed over for promotion and end up leaving. FACT.
@broadband01 That fuckin' Jack Regan was a bloody good copper ! I'd type that in MORSE if some of you You Tube blighters could understand it ! ☺ RIP John Thaw....
I watched this show on ITV at the time and loved it. Rough and violent and when said ' You're nicked' you felt you were listening to a great actor,John Thaw RIP.
Top theme tune, top series, easily my favourite programme of all time. If I have shit day when I’m sick of 2020 I get the box set out about 10pm, choose an episode, open a bag of chocolate peanuts, nice big cup of tea, pull the foot stool over and unwind, lost in 1970’s London streets, cars, cloths, girls, bomb sites and language. Fav episodes are stoppo driver, country boy, and ringer, though they are all great really, oh and the pilot episode ‘Regan’ love the theme tune to that.
Can't beat the late great John Thaw. Fantastic actor. "Bottle"...good British slang/word. Means "balls/bravery/courage" if this Yank is not mistaken. Here in the USA we can't even refer to criminals as thugs anymore without someone's cousin crying about it or someone else complaining that it's derogatory/insensitive/out of order. He killed a cop and his grandma but he's not a thug. Oh no. Perish the thought. Puh-leeeeze. It's US (law-abiding people) vs THEM (thugs/criminals/gangsters). Ya dig? Come on now. I remember seeing one (or both?) of the SWEENEY movies back in the day. Change of pace. More than enuf USA cop shows.
entwistle4ever Yeah it does mean “ nerve, or balls “ , yes America is worse with the PC than we are, although we are catching up and it’s going too far now imo. I had the two movies on video, the second one was good, Thaw was the best though and the original Inspector Morse series was some of our best television drama besides, London’s Burning, Heartbeat and Cold Feet.
@JuanMacready widely recognised as one of the best dramas british tv has ever produced - still being shown 33 years after the last episode was made!!! says everything really
~Now for its time a ground breaking police drama showing that the police themselves are real people have lifes and the villains get away and themselves are up against the system
I worked with a guy once who was x real life sweeny you never crossed him there was never any trouble and he always had a bottle of scotch in his glove box he could definitely tell a few stories and point out the old lags in the pub
I LOVED this show, for the cast and especially for the cars when Ford knew how to make a car. They stopped building decent car in 1995 (the last Ford Granada MKIII was the best of the lot). Thanks for the theme.
"Guv, I think we've got the wrong house" after Regan & Carter stormed into a flat, tooled up, Interupting a very posh family having a meal. Very funny! Best scene ever!
Thumbs up if you think TV was better in the 70s, hate political correctness, hate feminism and wish society was back like it was in the 70s or earlier! I sure do.
Lee Bee Yep, TV was better before all this SJW millennial snowflake crap that find everything offensive before 2010! They are killing off Apu in The Simpson’s because he isn’t being voiced by an Indian but by an American so is thus “ offensive and not politically correct or culturally appropriate” because of that. I think they should cancel The Simpson’s, it stopped being funny after the movie, they got rid of all the best gags and a lot of the actors want to retire from it now. Plus every character on that show including Apu is a stereotype, so you might as well pull the plug as practically every character would or could cause “ offence” to some dickhead or another. Western humour ( whether British or American ) has always “ taken the rise” out of, race, religion and culture and satirised it, we won’t have anything left if these idiots keep getting listened too. Ironically the writers and creator of Apu et al, Matt Greoning are liberals.
Get ya trousers on, you're nicked!!!! Best tv series ever made in my view. When I get tired of this mind numbing pc world we live in today, I get my Sweeney box set out and enjoy some true freedom of speech!!

You can see where the inspiration for Gene Hunt came from in that line.

@@OlagGanyou only said half. The other half to the woman in the bed ‘and you darling can stay there and have a lie in’
I still view this as the best opening theme track in TV history. One of the best shows too.
We’re the Sweeney son, And we haven’t had any dinner.
They don't make them like they used to...pure class !
Who did'nt sing along to this song when they were younger? "The Sweeney, The Sweeney, da da dada da da da da da, The Sweeney"
i have the professionals theme as my ringtone. when it comes on Jesus it gets you.
Yes! And I still hear faint voices singing in the background, never sure if it's my imagination or not. Listen to it again and you'll see what I mean.
Get your trousers on your nicked... saw this as it was on telly back in the day .
I even miss the thames tv intro!
Brilliant show back then, one of the best theme tunes ever. Worked just as well 30 years later when they remade it as 'Life On Mars'...
The Sweeney,Starsky and Hutch and The Professionals.I was really spoilt for choice in my younger days.
I’m a 90’d kid and my dad introduced me to The Sweeney, The Professionals and Starsky & Hutch
