Thank you Magnus for inspiring me to learn to play the nyckelharpa (at Mendocino Scandia, the candlelight concert specifically). I love it, even though I don't sound at all like you! Sonia
well, I use to play the viola in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra - and I have laid it to rest - but when I see this instrument - somehow it rings true to me somewhere -
@JorgeBurner The tune is collected from the notebook of Sven Donat. He was a corporal and musician who lived 1755-1815 in Småland, a historical province in southern Sweden. The whole notebook can be found online. If you want this specific song, google "Polska efter Sven Donat (MA5 40)". The first hit will be folkwiki.se, there you have notes and midi. Good luck!
@odahijo; If you order direct from the constructor, you probobly can choose to have it in black. For me, its the sound, and how it works that is most importent...
Thanks. Much sparetime and a lot of lucky guessing, is the keyword ;) Other than that, as you wrote, a lot of practice. I learned this tune by ear. The tune is from the other half of the 18:th century. A swedish folktune a´la barock..ish..
Its sounds SO much like a typical (old italian) baroque composition :D Almost exactly... I know the swedish court employed italians going wayyy back, but wheres the original scandanavian sound? I dont get it... Unless it was a give and t ake thing?? mutual inspiration??
carelessbear Thats probobly not so strange. In the days (1700-ish) there was big influences from the new modern music (read; down in Europe). Popular music that people wanted to hear. This might be a swedish version of something that was popular at that time. If you have background to the original composition I would be glad to see it. Please contact me at umemagnus@gmail.com if you have sheet music to it. Thanks for the response! BR Magnus
You personally play this, so I was wondering about the difficulty of learning how to play. I've had instrumental teaching before, but never with bow and string, and never with anything to allow for a duet with my wife.
Hello, thanks for the comment! The difficult thing is the bowing. Thats were all the tone, rhythm and "the music" is. And thats for all the bowed instruments. The lefthand is not that difficult.
it's killing me how these are called Polska's because i'm from Poland and in my language my country is Polska ;p (same with Polka which is Polish girl and is also used as name of genre ;p) really good music on a cool instrument ;D (how much do they cost? ;p)
Stunning piece. But I hope you've learned to put a pad under your foot. The music is astounding but the constant banging distracted from an otherwise fantastic performance. I realize, as a musician, that keeping time with your foot is helpful. But not on a wood floor. Hope you've solved that by now. LOVELY PIECE and well played. Thank you!
Isn't that a little like complaining about the clicking from the keys? ... As I understand it this is dance music, so as well as being a natural part of the overall sound, for me the foot tapping simply reminds me of what the music is really for.
Wunderschön
Vielen dank!
Otroligt fin låt, och mästerligt framförd.
Fint, fraserat och kraftfullt spel Magnus! Gillar...
The sun is coming up, I'm going for my second cup of tea and another repeat of your very beautiful video! That is such an incredibly beautiful piece!
This was really awesome! Väldigt bra spelat! Älskar ljudet från Nyckelharpor.

Så otroligt vackert!!
Still absolutely love the way you play this, years later. It adds wonderful quality to my life.
@mvdamme
That nyckelharpa in the video is made by Per Ahlander, Umeå (He only builded one instrument!). But now I play on a Esbjörn Hogmark-harpa.
****ing amazing. I would love to hold this instrument in my hand and pretend like I could play it...absolutely beautiful
nothing like a violin cello nor a regular stringed instrument...
thank you Vikingskog for the recomendation
Wow ! How impressive !
Gyrocompa thanks!
Otroligt vackert! Den här videon har varit en stor motivation för mig att skaffa en nyckelharpa!
👏👏👏 Underbart Magnus!
Thank you wery much :)
Yep, this is a swedish folktune, but, Sven Donat (the composer)must have liked Bach ;) And its a polska (3/4 beat).
Tack! Va kul att kunna vara till hjälp :)
Otroligt fint spelat. Kanon.
Working with this for over a month now, finally coming together! Hoping this will take me to ethno or korrö-festival-camp :)
Tack :)
Det är Per Ahlander, från Umeå, som byggt denna harpa. Har haft den sen 1988.
Beautiful!

LOVE THIS - MUST BE DIFFICULT TO LEARN
Thanks! Well, it took some practice. But first, learn the basic melody, then add on the trouble :)
Snyggt spelat!
Tack Patrik :)
@niure86 I was looking for this but couldnt find it. Thanks =)

Is it possible to buy music for this piece?
Can you tell me where I can find the whole notebook?
Как называется этот инструмент?
pondeflauers Это "никельхарпа" (nyckelharpa), из Швеции.
Mick Phillips О, благодарю!:)

Well - In dollars i´d say..about ......2000 - 3000 Thousand $
William Prado Good beginners instruments is about that price... Professional instruments is about 5000- 10 000 dollar.
Holy... okay, I'll stick to what i can afford as for now ;) maybe in future i'll get myself one of these
,,polska,, come from Mazurkas, and came from Polish.
still i won't be able to play it on the nickelharpa before i have a well-paid job xD
Polska best
Cool instrument. And beautifully played. I hate to be negative, but the key clicking is somewhat annoying. Nature of the beast, I guess.
Polska best land

It's ment to be a "foot stomp" in this kind of folk-music. On the first and third beat. It's necessary !
Isn't that a little like complaining about the clicking from the keys? ... As I understand it this is dance music, so as well as being a natural part of the overall sound, for me the foot tapping simply reminds me of what the music is really for.
