I've never hear anyone talk about Chris Cornell, without saying that Cornell was his (or her) personal hero. He was THE MAN. (And Phil as always... humble and just a gracious human being)
HOLY F!!! That was Philx on ‘Long Gone’?! What an incredible story! Love this tune and the outstanding guitar work, one of my favourite Chris Cornell songs. Now even more favouriter (can I say that?)!🥹🤗👏🏼
can safely say Phil has been the biggest influence on my playing the last decade. been watching and learning everything he puts up since i discovered him on the fretted americana videos. ive been playing 19 years now and most significant growth ive experienced as a player has been during this time watching phil. I count him in my top 10 guitar players list. Hes a BEAST and then some. Thank you Phil! Also learned so much about guitar gear too.
Thanks for the inspiration im 54 have a 7 year old . Haven’t played much the last 7 years . Picked it up after seeing your two vids with Pete throne . Man relearning the good stuff is fun again . Disciple of Ed Ritchie Blackmore Uli and Jimi plus Phil X now ! Ty bro
Just fucking imagine: Listening back to that 'solo' and playing along to it and remembering Chris sitting there watching you play it and digging it. Fawk man!
Hey ya Phil!!! What a trip...all the way from Erin Station to Recording with Chris Cornell. You are BEYOND deserving of all of tour success!! We all knew you were going to go big time, all of the jam guys and we all watched with a huge smile on our face. All the very best to you in the future and may you be further blessed in your life a career choices!!
Finally, a Phil X solo I can play! Thanks for sharing this story and the music that came out of it. Chris was a hero to a lot of us. He was truly a giant among giants.
If we learn anything form this, it's don't be shy to show people love them. Take a picture with your friends and people that are important to you. You.may never see them again.
Great story, thanks. Great playing too. “Scream” is underrated. I love that CC had the nuts to do something outside the box. That’s what a true artist does. I also understand your reluctance to ask for a photo. I’ve been doing concert bookings for 20 years. I booked CC’s solo tour twice and I did not have the stones to ask if I could meet him. But the shows were great, especially the first tour. So that’s still my point of pride, like you getting him to laugh during your session. Cornell’s talent as a songwriter can’t be overstated. He is badly missed.
I absolutely love long gone the rock version and always assumed it was Pete Thorn or Yogi doing the guitars but this is an awesome story thank you! The parts are are beautiful voicings and perfect! Chris was truly the greatest vocalist of our time!
Hey Phil.. Every time I hear "long gone ", I close my eyes and I feel like u r playing and singing that song.. No disrespect to Chris, but this song is yours.. Rock on bro!!! 🤟
Man you got such great skills for studio stuff. The way you mix rock guitar with pop sensibilities makes me immediately think I could hear 90% of your songs on the radio. I've been playing guitar my whole life , playing bars, festivals, weddings, regional shows in cover bands and I'm a really good copycat. My weakness has always been coming up with original music and I hate the fact that I can copy and cover just about anyone but I can't for the life of me be original. I really admire you for the way you go about songwriting. Please, do more of these vids man, we know you got tons of stories.
Chris's loss will forever be an unhealed wound, the fact that he chose "you" is the ultimate compliment, he knew what a talented "Badass" you are! I can't imagine how cool that must have been for you. I'd never heard of you until the night I was searching for a cover of "Superstition", and when I saw your cover I almost passed it by, something told me to check it out and I did, "it blew me away" I must have watched that video 12 times, I've been a fan ever since, you've got a great voice and your abilities on a guitar are mind blowing, as a player myself you're truly an inspiration. Rock on my friend🤘🏻
Hey great story. You're very lucky. I know people hated this album, but it really grows on you, and the instrumentals are obviously top notch. I love everything Chris ever did, so I was going to be a fan no matter what.
You're a f@#kin legend Phil, amazing to hear that story! I loved that album especially live when Chris came to Ireland, pity he didn't book you for the tour!! I think when ppl heard timbaland they shot it down without listening to it! I was heartbroken when I knew I'd never have the buzz of him releasing or writing new music 😔 thanks man
Wow! I've been watching your Fretted Americana videos for years and I never knew you played on this! I was fortunate to see Soundgarden and Chris Cornell several times each here in the Pacific Northwest. I've always dug the guitar work on Long Gone and now I know why. 🎸🤘
My favorite track, off of that criminally underrated album! Then I found out later, that there was a "Rock Version" of the song. Been pretty obsessed with it for some time. Very Very cool to hear some backstory on it! Love it! Cheers Phil!
Phil. Been watching you for many years. You're exceedingly humble and I always enjoy the fact that you use self-effacing dialog to describe yourself, even when it's clearly not warranted. You're an amazing artist. I really enjoyed learning about your thought process in developing your guitar parts for the mix. Very cool! Thanks for sharing your talent!! Rock on Dude!!
Really cool story! Love that you are such a pro, yet still fan out when you meet a hero. I have been a huge fan of Cornell’s since ‘90, and actually met him in 99 after a concert in Seattle. I sucked it up and asked for a pic and he said yes. I treasure that photo to this day. I feel for you... but you have the honor and f’n epic experience of being forever linked with him via recording. It’s the strongest track/version on the album!
It’s definitely got that upbeat/dark moody melodic guitar tone. I follow all your stuff Phil. Just started playing guitar and I have a lot of gear now and I didn’t realize that there is so much to learning about guitars like how old how many made and where they are made plus finding the right neck for your hand and the size of the frets. I don’t work and I’m on CPP disability so all I do is play eat drink and sleep with my guitars. Oh thanks for keeping the good music alive bro. Who knows maybe one day we might jam together. I better keep practicing lol. Peace and RnR bro.
Phil...you are hands down...the absolute most humble dude with stratospheric talent and it is so fun and inspiring to watch and listen to what you do and the fact you obviously LOVE to share your knowledge, talent and inspirations with us. Bottom of the heart dude...Thank You!!! Have always loved your Drills albums but only recently found these videos. So glad you are doing them. Keep it up man!
i love how phil is still a fan. he is an accomplished player, and a member of a huge rock band. yet he still possesses the grace, humility, and a sense of joy that is truly compelling ;O)
Hey Phil just saw you rock out with Jon Bon Jovi a few minutes ago on The Voice. I was like... dude that’s Phil X!!! . You were the high energy guy! You sounded awesome, Jon sounded OK.
I’ve always wondered what this story was. I remember you mentioning it on Fretted Americana forever ago. I still miss Chris a lot. Thanks for sharing this.
I remember working at a ma and pa record store in the late 80’s as vinyl began to trickle to nearly a stop. CDs had become king. I was stocking the few we had gotten in and I see this LP -Sound Garden “Louder Than Love.”-The record cover alone told me this was something completely different from what had become an overwrought, over produced pop metal factory: all the glam, none of the growl. Instead of filing under “S”, my pinky nail sliced the sleeve and within moments of the needle hitting the groove, I could hear the paradigm change. It was coming out of my corner of the world no less, the Northwest. I hadn’t heard of any of the bands that would go onto define the next decade in music yet but I believe my store started to get the Seattle culture newspaper “The Rocket” soon after that. It became the antidote to REM’s ‘Green’ and ‘Document’ which was coming out of every other dorm room on any given floor and usually simultaneously. Once again, I felt that primal scream of youth. Loved those REM records but I had had enough. It’s wonderful to hear something for the first time, and the greats reward that same feeling with each listen. That was my introduction to Chris Cornell. Granted, not as cool as playing on his track but a hell of lot less intimidating. Great story Phil-thanks for sharing. I just love all the stories. People pass but a story lasts forever. Cheers!
Just brought back the reason I picked up my guitar and started playing full on again. Lost my dad and stepdad and Chris in the same year. One of the first songs I learned and launched me into creating originals !! Thanks for posting Phil !! Cheer's from Port Elgin Ontario
Chris is my all time favorite singer and I have been listening to this version of Long Gone more than any of his songs since he left us. So cool to know it was you playing guitar. I’ve only been listening to you for a couple of years but have become a huge fan. Thanks for this video.
Really enjoyed hearing the story and also seeing you breakdown the parts like that. I saw Audioslave live back in the day and they were amazing. I always regretted that I didn't really get into Soundgarden until they were already broken up. That was a nice way to kind of experience some of the genius though - they did some Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine songs at the end too. Chris Cornell really was a crazy good vocalist and song writer.
Thanks for sharing your story, and great playing on the track! Chris was a legend. He was the unassuming Alpha of the Seattle scene. He was so talented, and set the bar so high for the other bands in the scene.
Lets seeeee.... How do I put this... uhhhh..... I know! This...❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Thanks for always sharing so much with us here on UA-cam!
I obviously never met Chris but miss the fact that we're without him now. Way too huge loss and way, way too soon! Happy for you that you got to at least! Keep posting these stories :)
Man, how awesome you recorded that song! When i heard it i actually wondered who the guitarist was, great job man! I also watched you in MWTM and i saw you in Mexico City when you toured with Bon Jovi, man its really cool you get to hang out with those two guys im a huge fan of both! and to get to participate in their songs, amazing playing and great attitude! Thanks for sharing your story, really
Hey Phil, great video! I was wondering if you could make your next video about being a session player in general, maybe even giving some tips to session guys who are trying to stand out and be successful in general! Thanks a lot a keep rocking (I was at your gig in London a few months ago and it was the craziest thing I've seen in a long time)
Neyl Nejjai hey man, unfortunately it's not something you can teach. what i did in the beginning, was write a ton of material & try out different kinds of parts to make sections come alive. so when i started doing sessions, my instincts were honed & it became my calling card. instincts are key.
My buddy repaired ADATs in Seattle during the 90s and Cornell's home ADAT got a tape stuck in it. After fixing it, it turned out the tape had demos for Superunknown on it, Cornell singing an Alice in Chains song, and Lynn Staley singing 2 Soundgarden songs and a song that ended up on Jar of Flies. :)
I had a moment like this with Damian Marley and Nas when I was an assistant on thier “Distant Relatives” album where I wish I’d gotten a picture with NAS. I did get one with Damian but was actually an request from his photographer and that was awesome... I just didn’t wanna be that guy asking to take pictures with celebs in the studio either. Hell, I got MANY artists I had that experience with.
Great story Phil, thats so bad ass you played on a Cornell solo track !! Back in 1990 Soundgarden was on tour w/Voivod and Faith No More and they played a little fill in club date in my hometown an hour NW of Philly and after the show I simply walked backstage (no security) and there was Chris and we drank a beer (actually he spilled a beer all over me) together and chatted. Coolest rock star 10 minutes of my life !!
Chris Cornell was a master musician. I always wanted to see Cornell & Ian Thornley of Big Wreck jam together. Phil X and Thornley would also be awesome!
Okay, I have known Phil for 2 years and never heard this story! Incredible brother Phil. Made my day!!!
Mine as well Rick. Love both you guys.

I love that Rick and Phil are consumate professional musicians but they're also very obviously fans as well.
I've never hear anyone talk about Chris Cornell, without saying that Cornell was his (or her) personal hero. He was THE MAN. (And Phil as always... humble and just a gracious human being)
This is why the world loves you, good sir!
- it's the humility and good will that
you radiate. You are our hero, Phil X...
Well said.

Chris, great artist! Love and miss him so much
I have been watching Phil play since he was 19 and you could always tell he was a good soul
I always wanted to here Chris sing with EVH, he has such deep dark voice and I thought it would be perfect with Ed. Great video Phil, Thanks

You were a big part of a very beautiful song...i hate he is no longer with us. I sure miss him
Thanks for sharing the background story on this song. Such a great song. Glad that you were a part of it. 👍🏼

Thanks for sharing your story Phil, what a great experience for you to have and to hold onto forever
Fun to watch your stuff man! Thanks for breaking down what you did on that session for us.
Hey Phil just saw you rock out with Jon Bon Jovi a few minutes ago on The Voice. I was like... dude that’s Phil X!!! . You were the high energy guy! You sounded awesome, Jon sounded OK.

Love these videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
Nice tune! Love the f holes , cracked neck, little things that make a piece of art!
I love this song man, and now I know you are the one who arranged and play it I love it even more..great!!! thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing your story, and great playing on the track! Chris was a legend. He was the unassuming Alpha of the Seattle scene. He was so talented, and set the bar so high for the other bands in the scene.
Thanks for that story. Big fan of both you guys.
Awesome !! I wish you guys had done a full album. Beautiful song and arrangement. BTW, the continuous flow of vocals works well I think in this song.
Great song! Thanks for sharing!

Phil ,Thanks for sharing your meeting and recording with Chris.
That was very deluxe in every way! Thanks for sharing Phil.
Great to hear you talk about your work. This reminds me a lot of fellow Canadian and Cornell-alumnus Pete Thorn's stuff
That was awesome thanks
I obviously never met Chris but miss the fact that we're without him now. Way too huge loss and way, way too soon!
Happy for you that you got to at least! Keep posting these stories :)
Thanks Phil for sharing this!
One of the coolest guys in the Business! Awesome
Great Playing!
Thanks for sharing your story !
Phil .. this is great content .. more please about the sessions you played on, the parts you played, the musicians you've met ..
Paul Rogers HOLY FUCK!!! goosebumps. thx for sharing.
@@philx1111 The families would probably want the recordings. PM me on FB if you want. It would make a pretty incredible UA-cam episode.
@@paulrogers6037 i hope you guys can get together and put something together with that info.
Great video dude. More demos of your parts from different session would be awesome.
I've just started home recording during the current situation, and it's helpful to see how you think about these parts. Good stuff, kind sir
Dude, this was awesome. Thank you for sharing the story! It's like getting insight to music history! \w/
Love the at home vids. Thanks for the breakdown too.
