Panasonic has thrown everything it knows into the S1 and the S1R. It’s taking no prisoners. These two cameras put every other manufacturer on notice, but we still have to see how they work in fact. If the AF is improved enough and the new FF sensors come just CLOSE to the ones in the a7 III and a7R III, make no mistake: these two are the early front-runners for 2019 Camera of The Year.

I recently picked-up S1R and it's closer to perfect (for me) than any other camera I've shot. It's a joy to use like the Fujis, I/Q is right-up there with the best (D850, X1D, etc.), build quality is immediately obvious, and so much more as covered by your video (all spot on IMO).
The biggest cons are weight and A/F (and lens availability to a lesser degree for the immediate future). I love the size of the S1/R which is a better fit for me than the trend towards smaller bodies that mirrorless enables -- better ergo and balances large and fast lenses better. Ideally the system would be lighter but I'm not a wedding photog who'll be holding camera up to my eyes for hours on end so the weight is something I can accept.
The A/F is surprisingly good for contrast only and plenty good for my use cases which don't include sports shooting and spray-and-pray shooting style. As a test case, I shot my dogs chasing each other in the yard and the S1R nails focus 70% of the time, whereas hit rate w/ the A9 was closer to 90% for me (granted, the A9 cranks out a much higher FPS and this was before v5.0 firmware). Regardless, anybody paying attention should know going into it that the S1/R are not sports shooters if for no other reason than the FPS is not there, and as you point out the contrast only design enables better IQ (i.e., no banding issues that can result from phase detect).
I never imagined I'd take on shooting with Panasonic, but the camera is so good that it's an easy choice for me. Yes they'll need to play catch-up with native lenses, but Sigma lenses are already available for pre-order so lens availability issue will be mitigated very shortly. In the meantime, I'm very happy with the the 50 1.4 native lens, which is insanely expensive but easily forgiven once results are seen.

I would like to comment on a general observation as tech support company owner who has contracts with all the major pro audio equipment manufacturers for a long time about the general philosophy of Panasonic and Sony corporations. Policies that covered all their many divisions from consumer to medical to industrial. The policy of support as a tool for sales. The two companies have for decades been opposite in their view of what service and support's role in sales and brand identity. I have set a personal policy of never buying anything over about $50 from Sony. I know too much about their use of withholding support as a driver of sales, by making parts less available the day a model goes out of active production. That burned me for $124,000 on a profession digital tape deck and its $19,000 controller by dropping the model 18 months later and cutting access to many of the wear items that need to be replaced every 6 months or so. Their only suggestion was buying the new model for only $156,000 plus $24,000 for the controller. This was in an industry that was used to keep capital equipment for 1-2 decades and having in-house repair and calibration staff.
A few years later I started an additional business that quickly grew to be the largest repair shop in the world supporting professional audio equipment and started doing warranty work for 54 key brands. Panasonic was a low key player in the field, but every serious studio had at least one of their DAT mastering decks, it was an industry standard. Sony had many models and churned their product line every year to 18 months but never became that popular because of the lack of parts for older models. Two Panasonic models were kept in the product line for 10 years and parts were available to keep them like new for 20 years. Panasonic philosophy was that new sales came from being a reliable long term partner. Sony philosophy was and still is, drive added sales by making their own equipment obsolete as quickly as possible. Panasonic was never flashy or hyping new tech building reliable workhorses that could be depended on delivering the performance for years. I notice that Sony is continuing that policy and selling flash, building to a price point rather than the performance requirements where others accept a narrower margin but build a longer-term value. I notice also many many people particularly those who get their news and opinions from UA-cam, are upgrading on every model change right in line with Sony's philosophy and not caring about long term viability or reliability. Every Sony shooter I know who started with the a7 has upgraded 3 times in 3.5 years. That is a poor return on investment for anyone concerned with business viability. All the photo pros I know are pretty conservative in upgrades, they only do so when a model as proven itself and then keep it for several generations. Most D3s shooters bypassed the D4 and about half are still shooting the D3s and the remainder invested in the D5 after it was out over a year. Those Sony fans could have invested in a pro grade camera what they spent on upgrades.
So, no Sony for me but having a 30-year relationship with Panasonic and seeing their low key approach, promising less than they deliver, I am very interested in what the final cameras are. If I invested in the Sr1, I would know it was be supported for years and will deliver a little more than promised.

Sorry to hear your problems. I can certainly not recognise that with Sony. I have owned several Sony products that have always been built very well and my old ES hifi is now 23 years old and still going strong. Also an old TV, my old a900 DSLR etc, etc. BTW the a900 could be repaired for 8 years which I find great since I had mine for 10 years. Had 2 lenses that had to be repaired and had no problems there either. That part with the a7 is just not serious.

I agree with you on many fronts, I was a Panasonic third party brand ambassador for their television's here in the states people use to tell me how much they loved their Panasonic tv and products I have shot with many Lumix cameras and camcorders, still own a 2007 50" Panasonic plasma still going strong, right now shooting with a budget Panasonic FZ80 bridge camera, after owning a Canon 60D for a couple of years. Heads-up guys. I'm going into a four day shooting schedule, so I'm going to be scarce on here. In my relative absence, if anybody new to the convo mentions "subliminal squarespace," could one of you please explain that this appears to have been a glitch during render with FCPX for which I'm solely to blame for missing it prior to upload (if I'm right about the problem); if it WERE subliminal they wouldn't see it; and [ad lib your own clever but kind ending here]. :)

I just bought the s1r and dropped fuji x-system. The autofocus is fast enough for my portraits and landscapes shots. But the ergonomics and viewfinder is by far better then any camera out there for a nice price. The flip and tilt screen is ideal for the studio. And yes the lenses are limited. But i only need a good 50 and a 85. This camera is a joy to work with. The 50 f1.4 is such a nice lens. The 85 f1.8 is cheap but produces beautiful pictures. I was highly surprised.

. So the a7iii with a 24-105 is the same price as a s1 with a 24-105. Plus the 24-105 focuses much closer at an amazing .50x magnification ratio. Everyone seems to be over looking these facts.

The one issue I have with Panasonic's DFD technology, no matter how well it works, is that it's dependent on lens qualification data that's only in Panasonic lenses. So pop on a Leica or Sigma lens, and you're back to pure CDAF, at least if Panasonic is doing this they way they did in Micro Four Thirds. Leica's been all CDAF, while Sigma in their few mirrorless SA-Mount cameras did PDAF/CDAF hybrid AF... what does this really mean for L-Mount interchangeability?

  • @steveGabrail

Great video as always. I Just got my hands on the S1 and it's super snappy, in terms of focus. I had the amazing Summilux 50 1.4 SL on it and it was very fast. Reminded me when I shot with the 1Dx II except it didn't have the shotgun feel behind it lol. I even put on the 24-105 (which I think is garbage by the way, from Panasonic) in super low light and it was able to focus very nicely as well. I tested it against my SL, and I have to admit, the SL is still a phenomenal camera. Even almost 4 years later, the SL still stacks up very nicely vs the S1. The S1 had about a full stop of ISO advantage vs the SL, in terms of noise. However, the SL images (JPEGS) retained so much more detail across the whole ISO range. Can't wait to see what the SL 2 will be like. By the way, the test was shot with the Leica SL 50 Summilix 1.4 for comparison. And I ended up preordering the S1.

I really want to handle these cameras. I am waiting for the SL2 from Leica, for the basic reason that the original SL that is now what, three years old, has a faster FPS, and better color science than Panasonic - and for video, I would put it against the color science of ARRI any day, and regularly use it for video. Although the S1 seems amazing as a second cam, and the S1R seems like a good "wait and see" camera before the SL2 comes down the pipe. I HOPE Leica doesn't just rebrand the S1R, that would sadden me. The SL was groundbreaking.

Hi Hugh, another well-considered video on the new FF Panasonic models. Your reviews stand alone, in my book, because they are so intellectually well-considered, thoughtful, yet remain grounded in real-world pragmatism. Hold that thought.... Regarding the slight digression into comparison with MF, I will still, and will remain to hold steadfastly, to the view that the higher res FF systems still can't & won't match MF for absolute and outright image quality, editing headroom as well as control over focus falloff and gradation and depth of color and tonality. But, coming back to my thought being held, if I were in the market for a FF ILC, I'd be considering the new Panasonic system most closely. I think Panasonic has done an exemplary job of really thinking these two models through very thoroughly. Cheers, Stephen.

This 2 model from Panasonic are winners. With so many great features my favorite because I’m a photographer 1/320 flash sync that one is so welcome for group and large depth of field using flash. Also using it with top Leica glass that will be a game changer medium large format here is under pressure.
Video combine with professional audio XLR connectivity. I’m a canon shooter I will still keep my DSLR but for Mirrorless I will invest with the S1 first and 24/105 give it a good trial and if all goes as I predict invest more on it. I totally lost faith in Canon to give me any of this features. But I will still ad a new DSLR from Canon if they make a worthwhile new model 🧐 that will be call a miracle.

It may be uncharted price and performance territory for Panasonic in the small form factor stills/video camera market, but let's not forget that they (along with Sony and Canon) have been producing high-end professional video cameras for decades now. So they're used being in the high end, high price camera business, in a very crowded market (with products from Sony, Hitachi, Ikegami, JVC, Canon...). So, Panasonic are very experienced and know what they're doing when it comes to digital cameras in general. It's going to be interesting.

Excellent video. This release reminds me a bit of the G9. Many people wondered why build an oversize and overpriced MFT camera, but when i held it, to me it felt like a smaller D750. So with the S series, have they built a too-expensive competitor to Sony/Canon/Nikon? Or have they actually just built a much cheaper Leica SL? Much depends on your perspective, methinks. One things for sure, the S1/S1R coupled with the new 50/1.4 is sure as hell not targeting the prosumer level market. This thing is aiming at the topend. If the AF holds up, it will be a beast. Sony has been waiting for this play by Panasonic and shall now deliver their A7siii, let’s see what they do with the price.

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie 5 років тому +1

I'm not sure Panasonic can duke it out on price with Sony, particularly given that Canon and Nikon are having a hard time of that. So it looks like they're going for the higher-end market with more features, but still aimed at Sony's strengths. Eventually Sigma will fill out the lower ends of the lens lineup, and the simple existence of Leica on the same platform raises the status of the product line, even more than Zeiss did with Sony, I think, just because Leica never did this before.

Dave Haynie great point...Like Brownstone said Panasonic needs to get their “autofocus house in order,” other than that they are a formidable beast.

      @DaveHaynie 5 років тому

@@bigdap100 They seem to be committed to their DFD technology. I know what they're doing, but I'm not convinced it's ever as good as hybrid PDAF. There are reports of the S1 cameras -- maybe not with production software yet -- perfectly boxing objects in the viewfinder but not focusing on them. I'm not personally hung up on it -- I shoot with Olympus cameras right now that only do CDAF, but at least on a mirrorless, your eye can be trusted for focus if the AF fails and you have time. They'll be better at that than anyone with that amazing viewfinder. It might not even be a huge issue in this class of camera, as Brownstone pointed out, for architecture and landscape. But what do they do about sports, wildlife, and other fast action needs? And I'm concerned that the L-Mount Alliance is a 3-way split over AF, and performance will drop using Leica or Sigma lenses.

Dave Haynie what are your thoughts on how the Panasonic S1 affects the impact of the Sony A7sii.

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie 5 років тому +1

@@bigdap100 The A7SII was a good idea, but it's a bit long in the tooth given the competition. When it was released, it had crazy good low light performance, but the BSI sensors in the A7III and presumably the S1 at 24 megapixel compare well. And Sony's still doing consumer video, 100Mb/'s and 8-bits for 4K. They're going to have to decide to compete with themselves (the higher end cinema cameras) or not compete with Panasonic and now even Nikon.

Hugh, if the S1 autofocus is anything like previous Pana models, this camera cannot be considered a hybrid. I would prefer crop footage in focus vs full sensor footage that's out of focus or pulsing. I also cannot see any current canon full frame shooter moving to the S1.

With the L mount alliance, the total number of L mount lenses should be plenty to choose from by 2020. This is Panasonic’s way of fast tracking their lens offerings while canikon are still building up the catalog. I hope. Panasonic still continue to develop new m43 bodies and lenses. A true successor to the GX8 comes to mind and maybe updating their current primes to have weather sealing at a reasonable price (no need for f1.2 since Olympus already has that) will round out the m43 space.

Actually Panasonic's pricing strategy is to price the body very competitively with it's major competitors, but price the lenses close to Leica lenses. They know that once you buy the camera, you're locked into their system and lenses. Leica will not be happy for Panasonic (and Sigma) to price significantly below them!

    Great video as always :-)
My biggest concern, in choosing between Panasonic S and Nikon Z (going from m43) is future lens prices and tele zooms. What will they offer for those who want to shoot birds and wild life? I know Sigmas has got some interesting lenses but when will they release, and what will they cost. What will Panasonic charge for their own lenses? A hand and a leg? Nikon on the other hand is going the small route which is also a great idea, and their Z lenses have already gotten some rave reviews, not to mention their PF line of long reach primes. But as you said, they also need to play the F-converter game for now. What will they bring out as far as Z lenses go? Will they try to protect their F mount line? Will they try to protect their DSLR's for some years to come? The great thing about Panasonic is they can go full speed in with their system, they don't need to protect any other high end camera. They can be the best they can be without any compromise.
Oh and do I fall for Nikons claims "larger mount, smaller lenses" idea? Is there any truth in that? Who knows? Does anyone know? Can it be measured? Would it be a safer bet?
    Hard decisions... :-/

Excellent video. The best I've ever seen you do. I thought it was very objective and fair with good reasoning behind your statements. I've been extremely excited about the Panasonic cameras and especially the S1R, look amazing. Yes, many if not all the manufacturers in this market should be nervous about this camera... Just a few things I'd like to add....
Phase One and Hasselblad. They don't have anything to worry about with anything from anyone else. Except maybe Fuji. But even that's pushing it.
People wanting Phase One or Hasselblad is a different market altogether. It's all about top-top end. Phase One has had 100MP long before anyone else. 150MP? Who else has 16-bit color depth? I shot with the Phase One IQ250 about 5 years ago and the images from that are as good if not better than anything else I've tried recently. Yes, there is certainly a price difference. But again, it's top-top end. Sort of like DSLR technology 10 years in the future. Maybe. Available now.
The last couple of minutes of your video I thought were especially perfect. As someone firmly in the m43 camp, I'm not going anywhere. The price and quality you get is easily good enough for lots of professional work. I went from a Canon 5DMKII to a Panasonic GX8. Yes, it's that good. For my bread and butter work and the foreseeable future, m43 is my go-to.
Another thing you said about the marginal improvement of bigger formats. Nailed it. For me, the price of going back to FF isn't worth the improvement. Unless something truly amazing from the DSLR comes out in the next year or two, MF is my next step. And as another professional photographer I know who just bought a Phase One IQ4, that camera is for those special and high-end commercial situations. But for most work, m43 will do just fine.

Gosh lot to discuss there; sorry, I think I will rise to the challenge but, it will require two posts. First, lets get personal. When I first saw this I thought goodness NO. Having walked around this week with my Nikon D700 and a 24-85mmG Zoom, I can tell you that all these lenses leave me cold. I will suffer for a bit of nostalgia a few times a year but, I never want to see monstrous lumps of glass in my daily camera bag again. I am a crop sensor girl and nothing about full frame gets me remotely excited. So, I watched out of interest rather than expectation. Then I saw it, your photo of the S1 next to a GH5. Hmmm not that much bigger. Then I thought; hey its a high tech body with a L mount. Stuff full frame AF modern lenses I dont need any of them; I already have a complete set of lenses. This is an APS/FF body that will take all my Leica TL glass with an APS crop that is bigger than my standard archive image size of 3600x2400 (I only store my art and panarama images bigger). I also have Nikkor 24mm f2.8D, 35mm f2D, 50mm f1.8D, Voightlander 28mm f2 Ultron and Leica 50mm Summicron M as well as a few Fx zooms all adapted to L mount for use on my Leica TL2. Suddenly the Panasonic S1 looks interesting; for 2 grand I get a Leica SL clone. Hold that thought pet - giggles

These cameras look promising however I am pretty much topped out in budget on Nikon glass and love my Z6 that has caused my D850 and D800 a lot more shelf time. What is your prediction on the impact of ProRes RAW that will soon be available on Z cameras. My video friends, who concentrate on production and post and hardly every visit camera forums or UA-cam were very surprised and are considering shifting to Nikon when that happens. They are not gearheads, more of the artist types, so naturally, their videos are much more cinematic and refined than the typical mirrorless or DSLR video shooter.
I sort of enjoy being the odd man out who is ridiculed for having a Z6, especially after comparing output and just giving a wry hint of knowing smile. WAY too much emphasis on hardware and WAY too little on the art. My circle of photo friends keeps shrinking as more and more shift from imaging to gear obsession and their results become boring and uninteresting.
When I go to Vimeo and see what some of the locals are doing with their short films and see their equipment lists, the quality of videos seems to be in direct inverse relation to the emphasis placed on having the latest gear.
My own field or music recording saw the same decline in creativity and art when it became easier to chase equipment since buying gear is much easier than creating something worthwhile.

I wonder about Leica as well, particularly because Panasonic seems to be designing the basic hardware for most Leica digitals these days, if not the industrial design and some of the system tweaks. Leica's been using more sensors from TowerJazz -- a sensor works co-owned by Panasonic -- than Panasonic ever did, but these new ones could be theirs. And in return, Leica was designing Panasonic's better M43 lenses. Now they're directly in competition... does this change their long-term relationship? If Leica's not designing Panasonic's top glass, who is?

Hmmm, looks like I'l be keeping my GH5, GH5S and G9. Primarily because the size and weight saving mounts up with multicam shoots, but also because (as a video shooter) I feel it might be more sensible to wait for the GH6.
I also have an EOS R for reliable autofocus on a gimbal (and as a B cam to my C200 for coporate interviews). So for me the S1 looks incredible, but whilst it kills the EOS R in most areas it lacks the only thing I use it for....killer autofocus.
My only remaining question, is does the S1 have a waveform monitor? Or did they drop it like they did on the G9?
My interest may peak as we learn more, but I feel Panasonic may have just missed in a few important areas... i.e. no fully articulating screen, no All-I codec, no phase AF and a crop in 4K 60 which makes a speedboosted GH5 a better proposition for video shooters.,

Everybody has been making jokes about the “L-mount alliance” but I think it’s a big deal. Like, really big. They are going to have more high quality L mount lenses from three quality lens manufactures in 1.5 years. They just need claw mind share in the community so when people think Panasonic it’s on the same shelf as Canon. Sony delivers specs but they suck at ergonomics and have at delivering native pro glass. Panasonic has quality’s from both companies. They give their customers what they want (unlike canon). They believe in camera ergonomics (unlike Sony).
Bottom line, Panasonic needs succeed here or there won’t be any more new Panasonic cameras.

Leica and sigma is bigger in this alliance than people realize, Panasonic Lumix gets the funding and operation deficits filled by their appliances and consumer electronics departments (as a monolithic conglomerate), but Leica and Sigma has nowhere to retreat to. Had sigma been comfortable with where they were in the market, they wouldn't have joined the alliance, pretty much same goes for Leica (they've been shrinking out of control). Success literally is their only option.

I'd much rather shoot sports and wildlife with Micro 4/3 cameras, but man, your'e right: "wow". These Panasonic cameras are insanely good. I look forward to seeing them compete with Sony in this market segment.
Just like Apple out-maneuvered Microsoft in the mobile space, a similar thing is happening in the mirrorless 36mm space. If one is going to adapt SLR lenses to mirrorless bodies, you may as well get the best bodies you can.
And Panasonic seems to subscribe to my ideal philosophy for zoom lens design: constant aperture only. Sliding apertures should have gone extinct decades ago, and Leica (you're my favourite manufacturer of all, I still love you, mwah, mwah) ought to be embarrassed that their flagship SL zooms are f/2.8-4. But, that's another discussion.

Sorry, you're not articulating all the AF concerns. Af in -6 EV has never been the problem. Few people complain about focusing in low light. The AF problem that Panasonic has is continuous AF AND the contrast detect AF pulsing in video. I'm not sure how Panasonic believes they can fix this. Their reliance on brute force sensor scanning and processing is consider the dumb method in engineering. If you can come up with a more efficient method, why would you go with a slow brute force approach? PDAF needs virtually little to no scanning and no CPU.

What about weight? As far as I have seen the F4 lenses are as big and as heavy like F2.8 from competition. Also the body while nice is really huge for a mirrorless, similar in weight and size to the Nikon D850. That would mean probably that the F2.8 lenses will be enormous and extremely heavy.
Regarding L lenses, doesn't DfD need to get some special info from the lenses? So Sigma and Leica would have to get the info on the technology from Panasonic and incorporate it in their firmware so that the S1 can use it.

It’s DSLR size and weight, but that’s what it takes - doesn’t bother me. It’s a choice. I understand if that trade-off doesn’t work for everyone - all good.

I am reminded of when Sony rolled out the A7 Mark III. In the wake of it going on sale the Canon 6D Mark 2 dropped in price from $2K to ~$1400 and is currently available for $1300. Did anyone at Canon notice? I have this strong feeling the Canon EOS R is about to discover a similar fate. And again, will anyone at Canon notice?

Can some one, Hugh Brownstone perhaps, get to the bottom of the flippy screen issue? Is this a patented tech licensing from Canon which they refuse to share at a certain competitive level or is the real trouble NIH arrogance from the bulk of the industry?
Nice pre-analysis on the S1 sisters but final firmware, and it's functionality, will be the real starting line. I may only afford the popcorn necessary to spectate from the sidelines but I'm ready.
